Nobody knows what I see

He's known, of course. There was no way he couldn't. He'd realized something must be wrong with him at Serpentberry's occasional look. Thornkit's question of whether he was Loonstar's son or not twisted something inside him Hollykit hadn't been able to explain, then. But as he watched Asterpaw and Dreampaw interact with their...his(?) mother, he began to see what Thornkit had been getting at.
He looked nothing like Loonstar or his older siblings. In fact he hardly looked like any cat in the clan, really. Maybe if he squinted he looked like Dewshine, a little. What did that make him? He must have family somewhere? And if so where were they if not in Thunderclan?
"Ma, I have a question." Hollykit announces himself, stepping into their den with paws still too big for him. The boy frowns up at her. "...do I have a family? I-I know you and Dreampaw and Asterpaw are, of course..."
He finds himself looking at his paws, suddenly uncertain about whether to prod about this. What if he was making a big deal about nothing? Maybe he was just the spitting image of his father who he'd never met..? That could be it. "But I have other family, don't I..? Did they go away somewhere, or..?"
The image of Serpentberry, cold and covered in flowers as dirt covers her springs to mind and he shakes his head so hard his ears thwap the sides of his head. He can't bring himself to voice the thought. Death is still a bit of a foreign concept to him but still he knows he doesn't like it. Doesn't like how it makes those around him feel. Doesn't like the scent of lavender and the tightness of his clanmate's throats as they speak of those who passed.
