The bottomless pit is a blot on the horizon barely spotted from camp, carved into the barrens like a puncture wound. As far as any know, it truly is bottomless, with no end in sight even on the brightest day with the sun at its highest peak. It has been here, untouched by time, since long past the memory of any cat Echostep has spoken to. Perhaps it has existed longer than the cats themselves have; perhaps it will outlive them all as well. Like a great slumbering beast, it looms without striking out, unmoving yet dangerous to those who may venture too close. Even standing before it feels like a risk, so the thief has positioned herself a good number of (longer than average) tail-lengths back from its stark edge. Rarely does she allow herself to relax, but somehow it is here that the tension unwinds itself from Echostep's shoulders.
The afternoon comes on the heels of a longer trek through the twolegplace, a meeting with a WarriorClan cat or two, and a belly full of food—another rarity to add to the pile. This is no special outing, not necessarily, only allowed because of her recent success in scavenging. She sits beside her sibling, younger and brighter, more precious than either of her parents if only by means of standing with her when the earth began to splinter beneath the feet of the colony. Their parents had stood apart from them, had turned away from the kin they had claimed to hold so dear… yet Rainbowflare never drifted. He is still firmly by Echostep's side now, a connection that she has vowed never to take for granted.
A rock is picked up and tossed, flung into the pit's center and swiftly disappearing from view. Everyone in the vicinity seems to hold their breath—or perhaps only Echostep does, anticipation flickering briefly over their expression—but nothing happens. Nothing ever does. "Still nothing," they comment as the stone seemingly falls and falls without ever making a sound. To Rainbowflare she tips her head, tail curling about her paws. "Your turn. Maybe we could find its end if we simply offer it a good enough stone." It is said in jest, the notion nearly as ridiculous as the idea of ever actually finding an end to the pit's depths, but green eyes flit to her sibling anyway, expectant.
