MEADOWBLOOM
x

A lighter feeling follows them back home, like a lighter breeze under the wings of a tired bird. The journey was a quick one without much time for reflection, but the stress of the night was off her back for the time being. The accomplishment didn't quite feel real, but there would be time to adjust. So many times now, she'd shifted shape one way or another from having all her limbs to three, from barncat to windclanner, from kit to medicine-cat apprentice. Life was full of constant change, and she and WindClan had borne the brunt of it.

Dimmingsun matches her pace, dawns softer haze swallows camp as they cross the threshold. The night behind them, she takes a moment to admire the orangish glow of the rising sun. WindClan slowly thaws around them, cats beginning to stir for their morning duties. One thing she wasn't sure about was how to broach her new name with her clanmates. It felt awkward to outright tell them without being prompted... but she was trying to be bolder, more vibrant, like the blooms of her namesake.

"Last night... I was acknowledged by StarClan as a medicine-cat." Her green eyes dart nervously over the faces in attendance. How much StarClan's approval actually meant to them wasn't for her to say.

The starry cats had been absent after Gladebloom's disappearance, and then again after the flood. Both times when she desperately craved their guidance. Yet, they were an inseparable part of WindClan now, even if she didn't understand their whims. "I would appreciate it if you would call me by my new name." A vine of courage twists in her gut. "Please call me Meadowbloom from now on."

// Please wait for @DIMMINGSUN. This thread takes place after the last half-moon meeting. I'm horrifically late. Please forgive me.

WINDCLAN MEDICINE CAT 16 MOONS SHE/HER
Meadowbloom values kindness and remembrance. As a kit, she internalized her mother's lessons, but questioned whether her way is the only way. She has broken free from the heavy burden of her mother's expectations due to their estrangement after the fire. She remains kind and soft-spoken through all she's endured, but is not afraid to speak out for what she believes is right.

Meadow works tirelessly at any task she undertakes, desperate to prove herself capable and worthy despite her disability. Without her mother's guidance, she finds new ways to express herself.

In conversations, she is gentle, thoughtful, and withdrawn, often hiding her struggles, fearing others seeing her as incapable. She continues to have a strong bond not only with her sister, but with her adopted family as well. Meadow uses her new freedom to support and deepen the bonds with her clanmates. Additionally, she has started to explore the more spiritual side of herself…

Her worldview is a complicated mix of hope and frustration. She wants to believe that there's hope at the end of all the suffering, but feels trapped by her limitations. With enough time and support, she may find a way to overcome her limitations and accept herself.

Déjà vu hits Dimmingsun hard on the walk back from the Moonstone. He had made this exact same trail before, and he will do it countless times more, should fate allow him to serve WindClan for moons on end. The specific memory that tugs at his heartstring's now, though, is back when he had received his new name and had to introduce himself as someone reborn—this is essentially the same for Meadowpaw, no?

Meadowbloom. Stars, he will need to get used to that.

He wonders if StarClan had peeked into his thoughts, or if it had been dumb luck that Serpentberry bestowed her with the same suffix and reasoning... there is no way, surely. Such coincidence cannot exist in the land of star-blessed and cursed. Not that the alternative is not just as unsettling, in its own way; to think that the private corners of his mind were not quite as secluded as he had known it to be all his life... at least it serves a purpose. At least ThunderClan's former medicine cat had used that knowledge to take the reigns from him and conduct a beautiful ceremony. It's what Meadowbloom deserves.

Dimmingsun walks beside her now; not a mentor anymore, but just a companion. An equal. A pair working on keeping their Clanmates alive.

He stays silent as she talks; remembers that awkward second or two when he, too, had to reintroduce himself to WindClan. She sidesteps the hurdle. Before family and friends could entangle her and take her away from him, Dimmingsun turns to look at Meadowbloom.
"I'm proud of you."
The words are meant for her ears only, but he doesn't necessarily hide the confession, either—those who pay attention to the way he utters those words, tilted due to the smile that scrunches his face up a little, will know exactly what he says.

YEWKIT

.

.
The morning is cold and quiet, but Yewkit sleeps no more. Instead she sits in front of the nursery, her breath a wisp in the low temperature. There isn't much she's doing, there isn't much she usually does, just sitting in silence, unmoving, when the shuffling of paws reaches her ears.

Raising her head, Yewkit notes her friend, Meadowpaw, and Dimmingsun returning from their regular medicine cat meeting - she can't say she understands what the meetings are for, but Meadowpaw seems... content. And if it makes her only friend feel good, Yewkit has no reason to question it.

Her ears twitch at their arrival, acknowledging the two only with brief eye-contact and a tip of her head. The medicine cats are busy creatures and the young cat has no want for taking their precious time, no matter how much she wishes she could. When Meadowpaw has time for Yewkit, she will come to her. But the smaller cat won't seek her unprompted, uninvited. She knows better than to risk it.

But this time, instead of retreating to the healer's den like usual, Meadowpaw adresses the clan, her voice soft and nervous, but Yewkit hears a hint of something else in the sound of the medicine cat's words. Something new. And then there it is - Meadowbloom. Yewkit's heart skips a beat and she smiles to herself - for the first time since she can remember, a genuine and sincere smile. It only lasts a moment, not long enough for anyone but the fading stars to notice, but it is there and it is for Meadowbloom.

She doesn't wait for anyone to speak, instead she stands up on thin legs and walks swiftly towards the newly named medicine cat - not rushed, but with clear intent. Before anyone else can crowd her and separate her from Yewkit. "Meadowbloom." she addresses the calico with her new name. "It suits you. Just like the herbs you use to treat wounds, your presence soothes and mends." Her voice is quiet, even quieter than usual, meant only for Meadowbloom to hear and no one else.

Not wanting to steal too much of her time, Yewkit simply presses her nose into the other's shoulder, letting it rest there for a moment, before turning back and leaving Meadowbloom to bask in the cheers of her clanmates. Maybe later she will find a moment to approach her again, or maybe not. But this she had done, shown her friend that she sees her for who she is now and who she's always been. Meadowbloom.

'Cause I'd get a thousand hugs from ten thousand lightning bugs
As they tried to teach me how to dance
A foxtrot above my head, a sock hop beneath my bed
A disco ball is just hanging by a thread

Cricketpaw stepped forward as Dimmingsun and Meadowpaw returned to the clan, relief glowing in her good eye like a lantern in fog. The moment Meadowpaw's voice lifted to address WindClan, she went very still, listening. A new name. Star-touched. Chosen. Earned. The cheer burst out of her before she could think. " Meadowbloom! That fits you so much! " she called, joy bubbling in her chest as she hurried closer. The name rang soft and green in her mind, like leaves after rain. It carried echoes of Gladebloom too, a memory wrapped gently among the stars. Maybe they had whispered it into being. Maybe it had simply already belonged to her sister all along.

As she looked at Meadowbloom, another memory uncurled, warm and small and fragile around the edges. She saw herself younger, kit-sized and breathless with ideas, spreading her little hoard of pebbles and shells before her sister. She had talked for ages about symbols, about how each stone meant something: protection, luck, safe journeys, safe returns. She remembered pressing one into Meadowpaw's paw back then, so serious despite her squeaky voice. She remembered sharing drawings with the other... Meadowbloom had been a constant for her. Like her adopted family was.

" That's you. You're life. You bring nature and calm... I think so, anyway. " She gave a small giggle, her tail twitching. Then she pointed to the wiggly mark with a proud little grin, baring her broken tooth like it was a badge of honor. " And that's me. A bug! " Cricketkit leaned in, lowering her voice as if sharing a sacred truth. " We have a pact now. A real promise. "

She would always watch out for her sister, she would never be alone... Cricketpaw beamed up at her, tail lifting in delight. " How does it feel to be a full-fledged medicine cat now? "
