Paw steps so sure of themself but slow trudged through grassy open land, ears pricked and head swiveling as a kit dangled in jaws, another following as quickly as possible closely behind. One large and one small they were moving through territory that had been claimed, territory that had once not had cats among it but instead was left to the predators and prey that would feast upon them and feed them. Had she known that there were others here now she might have asked for help, might have sought out shelter or even a place to call home for the rest of her days, but instead she was wary on the look out for foxes, for hares that wandered too close.
When a predator dared to begin to move through the grass, the larger of the kits was quickly shoved down into the grass, into an empty rabbit den as mother and smaller of the kits began to run off. Whether she was leaving the larger of the kits back to distract the predator and die or she was out looking for another hiding spot for the other kitten wouldn't be known, and whether it was divine intervention or something else somehow the kit that was shoved down into the grasses hadn't been seen, and though the mud-colored kit lie in wait quietly as she'd been taught for when her mother returned there was no reunion, no soft whispers of "it'll be okay, I'm here now" with food for her and her sibling to share. Instead she was met with cold air as the sun began to set, the rumbling of her stomach as the realization that she hadn't eaten yet set upon her, and curling into herself to try and make it okay, to try and warm and ignore the pang she couldn't help but let out a soft whimper as the sounds of day changed to night and shadows began to change to something scarier.
Shaking within the abandoned den a patrol would find it hard to spot the naturally camouflaged kit within the dirt and mud, though it wouldn't be hard to hear the small crying that was coming from the tiny beast, and when they approached they would find wide orange and green eyes staring up at them, unsure whether to fight or take flight, for now frozen in fear of what was to come from the strangers.
