MEADOWPAW
x

lay it all on me - carole and tuesday

The rain hadn't stopped for days, drumming outside the medicine-den to its own heartbeat. The parched ground had long since drunk its fill. Now the excess spilled over, seeping into nests, caving in dens, and chilling everyone to the bone. By nightfall, the den was thick with the scent of wet fur and the air heavy with bodies pressed together in search of warmth.

Meadowpaw tiptoed between nests, craning her head to check for fevers and making sure there was enough moss to go around. She took her time, whispering reassurances and gentle touches to those frightened by the thunder's growl. Exhaustion tugged at her eyelids, and her limbs felt unsteady, but their comfort came first.

A sudden gust rattled the heather drapery, and Meadowpaw turned to see a shadow stumble in from the storm. Water streamed from their quivering pelt, dripping into the puddles already gathered on the dirt floor. The wind rattled the entrance, punctuated by a sharp crack of thunder.

She gathers a tired smile and hurries to greet them. "Hurry in before you catch a chill." She whispers and with a sweep of her tail, Meadowpaw guides them deeper into the den. "Let's get you dried off and into a nest." The night was far from over. How many more would come?

// You're a WindClan cat, through and through, so bearing the weather in your sleep shouldn't be too difficult... but enough is enough. You're soaked to the bone. In an act of desperation, you enter either the nursery, elders' den, or medicine cat's den and attempt to snooze there.

WINDCLAN MEDICINE CAT APPRENTICE 12 MOONS SHE/HER
Meadowpaw values kindness and remembrance. As a kit, she internalized her mother's lessons, but questioned whether her way is the only way. She has broken free from the heavy burden of her mother's expectations due to their estrangement after the fire. She remains kind and soft-spoken through all she's endured, but is not afraid to speak out for what she believes is right.

Meadow works tirelessly at any task she undertakes, desperate to prove herself capable and worthy despite her disability. Without her mother's guidance, she finds new ways to express herself.

In conversations, she is gentle, thoughtful, and withdrawn, often hiding her struggles, fearing others seeing her as incapable. She continues to have a strong bond not only with her sister, but with her adopted family as well. Meadow uses her new freedom to support and deepen the bonds with her clanmates. Additionally, she has started to explore the more spiritual side of herself…

Her worldview is a complicated mix of hope and frustration. She wants to believe that there's hope at the end of all the suffering, but feels trapped by her limitations. With enough time and support, she may find a way to overcome her limitations and accept herself.

'Cause I'd get a thousand hugs from ten thousand lightning bugs
As they tried to teach me how to dance
A foxtrot above my head, a sock hop beneath my bed
A disco ball is just hanging by a thread

Cricketpaw had always found her way into the medicine den. Apprentice or not, rules or not, nothing ever kept her from sneaking in to curl up beside Meadowpaw. She'd sulked and pouted for days when her own apprenticeship began, dreaming of sharing nests with her sister at last, only for Meadowpaw to take a nest in the medicine den instead. Of course, she was proud. Nobody was more perfect for the role than Meadowpaw in Cricketpaw's eyes! But still, it meant lonely nights in the apprentice's den. So she'd fixed that in her own way: with little nighttime visits.

Today though, she didn't sneak. She came in openly, dripping wet and looking thoroughly miserable. " It's raining SO much outside. " she huffed, padding up and brushing her damp face against Meadowpaw's cheek before shaking her head. Droplets scattered everywhere. " I tried to fall back as much as I could, honest! Other cats need the dry more than me, and my fur's thick enough to keep me warm... But... Even I can't battle rain, Meadow! Not this much rain. " Her nose scrunched as she trailed after her sister, fluff clinging in soggy clumps. " I feel like I'll never get dry, ever again! " she groaned before collapsing unceremoniously onto her side. From the floor she peered up with dramatic despair, tongue sticking out. " Sleep will forever be stolen from me. Nay, I cannot survive this weather! "

Her theatrics didn't last long though. She rolled upright, shaking her pelt with a shiver and blinking up at Meadowpaw with worry written across her good eye. " But… seriously... " she murmured, voice softening. " There's a lot of water out there… Are we going to be safe here? " The memory of her shiny stones made her chest ache, she'd thought they could protect WindClan once. But life didn't listen to stones, and this time, she didn't know what she could do to keep everyone safe.

⋆⁺₊⋆ ☾⋆⁺₊⋆ Jaypaw ⋆⁺₊⋆ ☽⋆⁺₊⋆-

Jaypaw tried to be strong, but the wind and rain proved too much, even for one such as him. The tunnels the tunnelers had dug out were great in green-leaf, but with this rain, even they proved tricky. How was he supposed to sleep with his fur wet, clinging to his body, his nose resting in a puddle, paws on soggy moss? He listened as the rain thud, thud, thudded outside, the downpour stream trickling into the den. He might as well have been outside, the tunnel providing little to no protection in this weather. Perhaps there he at least wouldn't be dripping into the already wet moss.

He stepped outside to stretch his legs, his clanmates looking as miserable as he felt himself. Was there truly no place to rest? The nursery, for one, but Jaypaw had no intention of taking up space, huddling next to the little ones. Leader's den was out of the question too. He turned his head towards the medicine cat den and sure enough, he saw a tail dissapearing inside - it was none of the regular residents, nor either of the medicine cats. He could recognise the tail of both Dimmingsun and Meadowpaw even in the rain. Meadowpaw. Now that was an idea - if the medicine cats were taking visitors, surely she would not turn him away?

Jaypaw wasn't sure what Meadowpaw had against him, but somehow his charm seemed to not work on her - well, he would simply have to prove himself!

He approached the den, his paws leaving behind pawprints in the wet ground, making soggy sounds. As he entered the tunnel, he shook his pelt before continuing into the cave. There was enough water everywhere already, no need to bring more into the den. The medicine cat den was dry, warm even, what with all the bodies in the small space, and Jaypaw found himself relaxing already.

Meadowpaw was just assisting one of their clanmates into a nest as Jaypaw approached her. "Oh, I'm just so cold..." he sighed dramatically. "Could I humbly ask to rest next to you, warming my pelt?" Jaypaw smiled at Meadowpaw, blinking at her. Surely she couldn't turn him away, looking this pathetic, his pelt soaked and shivering. He probably looked more like a drowned vole than the handsome tom he knew himself to be, but perhaps that was exactly what would win him sympathy where his usual charm had failed.

Even if Talon was apprenticed, he still found struggles. And that was well, leaving the medicine den. It was his nest that lay in the back of the den, and no one had told him otherwise. Though he'd started slowly opening up, he still found struggle- and things would become overwhelming. Cats would approach him as if he hadn't lashed out before, they would include him- and talon found this part of adjusting the hardest. His tongue rolled in his mouth, lapping at the inside of his teeth, but he persevered.

Because Meadowpaw asked it of him, and he would do what he could considering all of the time Windclan spent on him. It was the least he could do. His blue eye watched as cats entered the den, the rain hitting and soaking his pelt almost ignored, at least until it soaked him and he had begun to fight the chattering of his teeth. The sky suddenly lit up and Talon had never moved faster, darting to the den as the sky growled viciously above him. His paws slid a bit, and he found himself half sliding and turning as he slid through the entrance, shaking his head and stiffly standing up at the entrance.

Slowly, his blue eye glanced to realize two things- the den was crowded, and someone was sleeping in his nest. He stiffened more, blue eye glancing at Jaypaw as the other seemed to coo at Meadowpaw, something about being oh so cold. Talonpaw blinked once, twice- then begun turning. It was too cramped in here, hell find somewhere else.

Honestly, Sparrowpaw was done with their pelt getting wet all the time; they had grown accustomed to sleeping in a little divot near the opening of the apprentices' den, one they had hollowed out slightly to be more snug. But the rain had started to trickle into the apprentices' den, which meant it pooled right in their nest before anywhere else. They awoke with a grumble and a startle as thunder crackled overhead, their heart thundering in time.

Their head spun, a sudden bout of nausea as all their mind could do was outrun a horse in speed. The crashing sound, the distant crackling, their stomach turned as it felt all too familiar to the night at the barn. But water replaced the flames, just as suffocating, deadly. Sparrowpaw had had enough, a wet nest and racing heart, they decided to sneak into some place else for the night. Maybe find someone else awake to talk with, just to keep their mind busy.

Then, in a passing thought, their gaze fell to the medicine den. It had felt like moons since they spoke, both so busy with their respective trainings. One of their first friends in the barn, they felt remiss not to pop their head in to see if she was awake, maybe curl up just within the entrance if not. They padded towards the den with some urgency to get out of the rain, not taking any time to hear if there were any voices.

They let out a small sigh, free of the rain, only for their face to burn a little, realising just how many cats there were already in there. Sparrowpaw swallowed hard, suddenly a little sheepish. "My nest got caught in the leak in the apprentice's den, thought I'd check iiif- everything was okay in here?" They quickly pivoted their words, suddenly feeling like there may not be enough room in the medicine den for anyone else to rest. The last thing they wanted to do was overwhelm Meadowpaw; it was the last thing she needed now of all times. They could always catch up later, but the least he could do while still there was to offer a paw if one was needed.
