{$title} SILENTSTEP TO THE RESCUEEE

Silentstep, 36 moons || Windclan || Tunneler
A fawn tabby with brown and white speckles.
She has a friendly demeanor, yet overshadowed with oddity.

Tagging - @Fogstare

Pushing forward through the sickening currents, who would crash against Silentsteps body, and yet she still fights to keep her head above the murky waters.

It was a depressing sight to see, what was once a home created by these cats is now filled to the brim with waves of the natures' debris. Despite the scene, she kept glancing around anxiously, looking for any cats who would pop their heads out of the surface and gasp for air. Or anyone who could barely keep afloat tucked away somewhere...

She was tired... so, so tired. But she pressed on to continue searching for any clan members in the flood that needed any assistance.
While still scanning, Silentstep trudged along the muddy waters, forcing through with the little strength she had as a windclanner. She had the paws to bend the earth in the tunnels, yes, but to swim? It was something she almost has little to no knowledge or practice with. And she'd never thought of ever needing its use strongly until now.

Upon arriving to a flooded den, her eyes finally had caught something... or someone. She couldn't decipher what it was just yet... But once dragging herself a little bit closer to the entrance, she realized it was another cat amongst the waters…! With a grey...familiar pelt--

" FOGSTARE! " Was all Silentstep could shout before a roaring wave had struck her mouth, filling it and reaching into her lungs, forcing a cough to erupt. That was her friend...!
Once again, regaining her breath, she calls out toward him, hoping his ears could grasp her shouts. " FOGSTARE..!"

It was so sudden, all of it happened so suddenly that Fogstare couldn't remember how it had even started. It was a couple clouds, a drizzle that wouldn't end, but perhaps that was his mistake. He assumed much too quickly that nothing would come of these events, but the skies would never be a sloth like him. Perhaps this was his punishment for being such a lazy cat, a lazy friend. The rising waters, the sudden shouts and screams of cats trying to scramble up the muddy walls of camp, the sight of his fellow cats suffering and being pushed further beneath their agony. They had already lost their home once, and the irony of water coming for them this time was not lost on him.

He tried to make up for his shortcomings, despite not being a great swimmer he stayed within the flooding camp and tried to guide cats to more stable ground, hoping the skies would appreciate his lack of inaction. Of course, he was then swept by the waters into the side of a den, the force of the water along with his body breaking down a wall and leaving him clinging to it lest he be dragged into the current

Fogstare coughed more muddy water only for another wave to enter his mouth, panic throwing his heart into a frenzy as scrabbled further up the den wall to try and find a way to spit it back out. He managed a gasp of air before more water poured in.

Through the roaring of water he caught a shout, ear swiveling to find the source before he grunted with more debris hitting his head. The den wall was falling apart under his claws, the rushing streams slowly unraveling the weaving. It was dangerous for him to keep clinging on, but he needed to know what that shout was, if there was someone in the den with him then he needed to try and find them, didn't he?

Fogstare pushed his head above the current, swinging his head around with his good ear pointed up to try and find the source of the noise. "H- krgh- Hello!?-" He sputtered, trying to lure the voice back.

"Who's- Who's there?!" As Silentstep swam closer, it became clearer that the gray tabby couldn't see his surroundings. A vicious bright red was running down his face, his eyes seemingly sealed shut from red scratches going across his eyes.

Once her ear managed to grasp a response from Fogstare, signaling his presence, she swam forward.
" Fogstare..! It's me, Silentstep!" Hopefully, the few times they've interacted before, he could recognize her voice apart enough from the roaring waters that harshly deafened it.

Upon swimming closer, her heart sank when seeing the details of Fogstares face, covered in marks of red smearing over his vision.
He… He can't see…!
Collecting the thought of her friend being visionless, her head quickly flicks around their surroundings. And realizes from the learnt knowledge of being a Tunneler, that seeing how the walls of this den could collapse at any given moment from its current state, filled Silentstep with growing horror at the mere sight.

They needed to get out of here. Now. Or else this den would succumb them into a watery grave.

" The… The den is about to c-collapse...! We have to go... I--H-KRHCKGH...! You're going to have to trust me...! Okay!? " As she says that, Silentstep managed to pursue a plan, one she has seen others do for ones who couldn't keep their heads up above the water. And carefully began rotating her body around, fighting against the raging currents that challenged to submerge her. Positioning herself enough to be beside Fogstare for him to get on her back. Despite the violent waves splashing everywhere, causing so much force around them, she managed to brush up against him slightly to signify how close her presence was.

"I'm... I'm going to need you to let go...! I-I'm- KRKLH...!" A wave had engulfed her head for only a moment, before she forced it back up to the surface and continued. " I'm…I'm right here…! I want you to get on my back! "

Silentstep's mind began to hammer the blunt logistics of whether her body had any remaining strength to even carry a cat right now to the higher grounds, but there was no other choice. So, she perished the erupting thought, and kept her focus on maintaining afloat enough for Fogstare to hop on.

"H-Huh?" He swung his head around more, trying to squint his eyes open but only managing to see bleary shapes of light before another wave pushed him underwater.

That was a she-cat's voice, she had said she was Silentstep? The faces of the cats he knew swirled in his head, until unnerving black eyes on a pale face pushed forward. Oh, the tunnel dweller- What is she doing in here?

He felt her pressing into his side, the warmth of her body compared to the cold currents sending a shiver through his limbs. How long has he been in the water that the little she-cat feels warm compared to him? Fogstare kicked his back paws, trying to push himself to align better with the other cat. At least until she proposed that awful idea.

"O-On- wagh- Y-Your back?!" He felt his brows furrow, a scrunch to his already aching snout. He tried to lean into her, to ensure he be heard over the downpour. "Y-You're too small! You'll drown carrying b-both of us!" He spat up a piece of reed that got in his mouth.

As much as he'd rather not drown pathetically under mud, he didn't want to drag another poor cat with him! That's the whole reason he ran down here to help!

Fogstare couldn't see it, but within this moment, the fawn tabby had formed a pout in response toward being called small... Small!? She wouldn't call herself THAT small if that's what he was indicating!
This will have to be something she'll need to bring up at a later time. It wasn't appropriate now to get caught up by this... Though, despite the comment... He was overall right; Silentstep is, in fact, small.

But the mention of her height had still partially wounded a tinge of her pride.

Despite being known as a soft-spoken cat, in this dire situation, a stronger tone seemed to have emerged its way through her voice.
" D-Do you have any better ideas then…!? We… We don't have that many options right now…! "

Right as those words were said, a giant clump of the ceiling had detached itself and fell a few inches away from Silentstep. Creating a giant splash as a result, and formed a wave by its impact. The she-cat lets out a fearful squeak upon the sight, and quickly dipped her head under the incoming wave, before rising it back up to the surface once it departed. This time she was prepared, upon seeing it first. And only hoped that Fogstare managed to follow along with being so close.

Luckily, once the wave had settled from its fall, it then calmed itself down into ripples, before joining the raging current. After spitting out the murky debris caught within her mouth, she then turned to Fogstare, her voice now returned to a frantic tone.
" L… Like I said, We… We need to get out of here! If-If we stay any longer, this whole den is going to collapse any second! "

- • Fogstare • -

Fogstare flattened his ear to his head at her harsh tone, not particularly in the mood to be scolded while he was actively drowning. He hadn't said anything wrong had he? Silentstep was certainly smaller than him, if he remembered right..

The meaningless thought was thrown out the minute the wave hit him, unable to see the roof falling apart he only felt Silentstep dunk underwater for a moment before getting hit with the brunt of the splash. He hissed and scrabbled further upon the wall he clung onto, before the wave engulfed him and settled. When Silentstep resurfaced the gray tom was coughing out more water, looking much more exhausted than before. While he didn't prefer it, he needed the molly's help if he didn't want to be swept away, much less buried as she was insisting would happen.

Fogstare reluctantly released a paw from the reed wall, yelping as the current immediately tried dragging him under at his unstable grip. He clawed at the mud floor, feeling remnants of nests and moss before feeling his leg bump into Silentstep's kicking paws. There she is! His air was running out, so he steadied himself against the ground before kicking himself up with all the strength he could muster, resurfacing and flailing a paw over her back. Trying not to think about how small her frame was compared to his, he kicked his back legs to settle his upper body over her back properly as they were pushed around by the current. He hoped they would make it out as he ripped his last paw off the den wall and fully settled across Silentstep's back.

Fogstare was right.

When he lept from the wall to her back, she immediately submerged into the water, taking Fogstare with her. In panic, Silentstep quickly fought the currents for her head to be just an inch above the surface to grasp any air for her lungs... But alas, with the weight of another cat on top, it was already hard enough as it is to achieve that. Her gasp was filled by the waters' debris, causing the remaining oxygen to be engulfed by it. She clawed wildly, in a frantic, but only then her limbs slowly started to fail her, becoming useless to pull herself and Fogstare up. Of course, now her mind had begun to curse up a storm, starting to shout at how wrong she underestimated this whole plan.

They were going to drown here, and it will be all her fault.

Her movement continued going sluggish, as she kept pushing herself to keep afloat... Any form of attempts resolved into a wave suddenly crashing the two, submerging them further. Silentstep could barely see her surroundings now, and was only met with the vision of the blurring subsurface around her. Was this really it? They were going to die by Silentsteps stupidity? The poor she-cat was trying, really trying to force herself above once again. If one was close enough to witness upon this scene, they would quickly see how dire the situation was for these two cats in need of help.

Another twist of the knife, turn of the screws
It's all in your mind and it's fighting you
Arm yourself, a storm is coming
Well, kid, what you gonna do now?
It's your reflection looking back to pull you down

.

It hadn't been his intention to be here. He'd only been looking for shelter from the downpour, a dry patch, somewhere to rest his head until the storm passed. But then the screams had come. Sharp, panicked things that cut through the rain and pricked his curiosity. Ever the fool for chaos, Zii had followed the sound. He found nothing resembling safety, only a swirling mess of water, mud, and panicking cats. His lips curled in faint disdain. He didn't know who they were, and frankly, he didn't care, but who in their right mind made camp in a dip in the earth during a storm like this? It was idiocy, plain and simple. Still… he wasn't here to lecture stupidity. He was here for shelter and it was obvious that would not be found here.

And yet, as he turned to leave, something in him lingered. A hesitation.

Latte's stupid words. Latte's stupid look.

A frustrated growl rumbled from his chest before he spat a curse and lunged forward into the chaos. No one would notice him anyway, not when cats were drowning left and right. His sharp eyes caught movement, two figures struggling against the current. Without giving himself the chance to regret it, Zii dove in. The water was brutal, swallowing him whole, tugging and spinning with merciless strength. If it came to a choice between saving them or saving himself, he already knew which one he'd pick. But for now... He could manage.

His teeth found fur. He bit down, hauling upward, muscles burning with effort as he dragged a smaller body toward the surface. A petite she-cat, half-drowned and flailing uselessly. He barely had time to speak before a wave slapped him in the face. " Get to-- " splash. He snarled, shaking his head and shoving her hard toward the bank. " Get to shore! Leave this to capable cats before you drown the both of you! " He didn't wait to see if she obeyed. He was already diving down again, lungs aching, claws slicing through cold water until he found the second cat. The tom was heavier, of course he was... And he had to admit, pulling him up was a miserable, sputtering effort that made Zii curse the day he'd ever followed a sound out of curiosity. Still, he got him up. Got him breathing. Got him to something like solid ground. When they finally broke free of the current, Zii shoved the tom onto the muddy bank and stood, legs steady and definitely not shaking as he turned toward the she-cat… who was still drowning.

He exhaled through his nose, a sound halfway between a sigh and a growl.

" Oh for fuck's sake… "

With a lash of his soaked tail, he glared at the tom he'd just saved. " Don't move. Higher ground. Try not to die while I'm gone. " Then he dove back in. The water closed over him instantly, cold and choking. He kicked hard, eyes scanning through the murk until he caught a flicker of pale fur. There. His claws found her, then his teeth, biting into her scruff with a rough, triumphant snarl. Gotcha. He broke the surface again, dragging her limp form against the current, his muscles screaming as he forced them both toward shore. By the time they reached it, he was wheezing, soaked to the bone, and absolutely done with heroics. He dumped her onto the muddy ground unceremoniously and stood over her, chest heaving, eyes narrowing as he waited for her to move.

" Is she dead? " he muttered. " That'd be a pity. Waste of effort. " he grunted out, but then she moved. He sat back on his haunches, red eyes narrowing, voice edged with dry disdain. " What was that, then? Five creative ways to drown yourself and take others with you? "

When the two tunnelers sank, immediately taken by the current and into stronger waters, Fogstare felt certain of a few things. One was that he was going to sleep for as long as possible, if he survived this awful flood. A long time.

Second was that the feeling of being weightless and alone in the water, the warmth of life suddenly vanishing from underneath his paws and chest with nothing but frigid cold left in its place, was something he never wanted to feel again.

He could almost cry when he suddenly felt teeth in his fur, not even minding the sharp pain of the rough pulling for how desperate he was to escape that dreadfully helpless chill that was settling in his marrow. Breathing again was hard when he was hauled somewhere, not in the camp but not in solid ground. His claws dug and scrabbled at the mud for a moment as he heaved and coughed, what felt like a lake being expelled from his aching chest and lungs. He heard a gruff voice, bitter and annoyed, before another splash. Clearly, his savior had an attitude. That was okay, they can bite his ears if they wanted, he was just glad it wasn't cold anymore.

More water came out, maybe mud, he couldn't stop retching even when the rough force returned and pushed him further up the muddy slope. Eventually they stopped, probably on better ground, and he heard the angry savior ridiculing someone. Was it Silentstep? She must've been saved too, by their angry rescuer, it couldn't be that his lazy bum was saved but not her.

He pawed around, hitting solid legs that seemed to flinch at the contact before finding the familiar shivering body of his other rescuer. "S- hng, S-Silentstep?.." He rasped, pressing his nose to her side and pawing clumsily to feel any of her movements. "cough- Yo-You're okay?.. Right?.."

One final wave had triumphed over them. It was over, now impossible to break out of it's overruling power. Her vision being blurred with nothing but a mixture between brown and gray shades from the debris flying past her in the current. The murky waters entering her lungs had created a burning sensation, like a raging fire within her. She had tried so hard to flail her paws, and trying to go toward the surface to grasp for air, but like previous attempts, the current would continue to win.

Her vision began to fade into black, and yet her mind screamed at her to keep fighting. To continue to fight off the currents. But it was obvious that her body couldn't even pursue those requests.

Slipping into an unconscious state, she barely felt the tug from the Tom. Who had grabbed a hold of her scruff and made an attempt to bring her up toward the bank. But alas, being sluggish still, it didn't take long for the current to pull her inwards into it's grasp once more.

But when the second time she was saved, it was a success. Her unconscious body laid there for a minute, still, and cold. But once a moment of silence passed, her eyes shot open, and soon, murky water began to haul out from her mouth. When it started to reside into spits and coughs, she laid there, tired. But was focused on regaining her rhythm of breathing back.

Slowly, she drags her eyes up to the figure who stood over her. Adjusting her focus with the little bit of strength she had leftover.
Hearing those words of ridiculement had pierced her heart. The tired She-cat wanted to properly respond... And argue back at his words. Though, all that came out was a very defeated "... N-No....".

She shifted her focus over to Fogstare, after feeling his nose pressed up against her from the check.
"Mmh... Y… Yeah... mhr...mhralrigrtht..."
Once that slurred response was said, with wobbly paws, she heaved herself up from the muddy ground. Swaying side to side a little from the remaining ache within her tired limbs, but it went away when she regained her balance.

Her ear flicks, after capturing the sounds of other cats in the distance... She could barely see apart from the rain still pouring down... Making everything foggy and misty in the environment. But it reminded her that, they needed to join them. It was best to be in a group than be alone out here.

She switches her focus back to Fogstare, with a tired look. " We… We need to go join the others... If… If you...can manage to get up... I can help guide you to Meadowpaw... A-And she can take a...l...look at your in…injury... if we can f…find her... "
Then, Silentstep flickered over to Zii. She didn't know this cat, nor had ever seen their face amongst the crowd of Windclan... But, setting aside her distrust, and the slight growing hurt from being ridiculed, she still gave the offer.
" Y... You can...can join us if you want... It... It'll likely be g…good to join with a crowd of cats...th…than be alone out here..."
Despite the mistrust, no cat should be facing this raging storm alone.

Another twist of the knife, turn of the screws
It's all in your mind and it's fighting you
Arm yourself, a storm is coming
Well, kid, what you gonna do now?

.

Good. Neither of them were dead. Even if one of them looked like he'd been put through a storm grinder and couldn't see straight. What a mess. Rain smeared the world into gray and brown, and the two of them were a pair of sodden, sputtering wrecks. Silentstep tried to speak and sounded like a frog coughing up pebbles. Zii gave an amused stare, no warmth, only that small spark of interest behind the red in his eyes then kept his face deliberately impassive. " Sure. No... " he drawled, voice bone-dry, dried atleast than his fur currently was.

He rose and shook himself, water flying in lazy, contemptuous arcs. A grumble escaped him as he checked them both over with sharp, efficient movements, eyes rolling once at the way they examined one another. He exhaled, half a sigh, half a scoff. Meadowpaw. What a glorious name. Who names a full-grown cat paw? Or wait, maybe these were those weird colony cats that suddenly called themselves Clans and claimed to speak with stars? Clan nonsense or not, why on earth would anyone make camp in a dip of the earth with a storm like this? He filed the question away under stupidity, then set it aside. Practical matters mattered more.

She had one point: in weather like this, a group wasn't the worst idea. He could tolerate company until the downpour eased, then be on his way. Opportunistic, not charitable. Zii let his gaze linger on Silentstep a beat longer than necessary, then dipped his head and let a crooked, almost-pleasant smile twitch across his face. Charming, if you ignored the teeth. " You know... " he murmured, voice smooth as silk and twice as dangerous. " I think you're absolutely right. Don't mind me taking you up on that offer. "

He padded closer and gave the tom a once-over. The tom's eyes were bloodied and useless, the cat was practically blind for the moment. Zii snorted, the sound equal parts amusement and annoyance. " Besides. " he said, flicking his tail with a small, impatient flourish. " This one's blind as a bat. Might as well make sure he gets to your other friends, didn't save you both just to watch you drown again for the sake of principle. " He planted himself between them, a pale, soaked sentinel against the storm, and waited for them to decide whether they'd accept his help, or whether they'd try to argue their way into oblivion. Either way, he'd done the hard part. The rest would be entertaining.

The tom followed after Silentstep shakily as she stood, keeping his nose pressed to her side until she stopped moving. He straightened himself out, the muscles in his legs and shoulders aching furiously at the motion, but he could only frown in displeasure as the other two cats conversed between themselves. Other cats sounds good... getting checked by this Meadowpaw, not so much...

Though he couldn't deny the comforting call of sitting in a more dry area with other cats who were just as awfully put down as he was, and especially not the idea of finally laying down somewhere soft and sleeping.

His ear twitched as their savior's voice took a silky tone, feeling his snout scrunch slightly before relaxing at the sharp sting the movement brought. This cat saved them, he can't start getting picky with their tone, no matter how slimy it makes his fur feel. He flinched slightly at the snort that suddenly sounded closer than before, dropping his head for a moment before raising it again with a slight curiosity. Oh, this rescuer didn't smell like them, the barn cats- er, windclan.

He turned his head to where he thought Silentstep's might be, or just her general direction, before taking shaky steps forward, brushing shoulders against the stranger before deciding to just keep his tail against his leg. "Th-Thanks... For saving us... We should hurry.."

Hearing those words slither from Vii's tongue continued to keep her weary of this rogue. When his eyes lingered on her upon the given offer, she returned a standing gaze back, despite his being intimidating. She had mixed feelings. On one hand, she was grateful another cat had made it just in time to save them both before the flood would've succumbed them into a watery grave. The other, she couldn't help her snout gently scrunching at the cat's tone. The way his words were silk smooth created a growing uncertainty within Silentstep.

But, she brushed off the crawling concerns of this cat, for now. This wasn't the time to sit and brew on these feelings. The fawn tabby glanced behind her shoulder when capturing the sounds of Fogstares small pipe of words in needing to hurry. "Y...Yes... Lets..." And with that, being the guidance for Fogstare, and now accompanied by this rogue, Zii. She began forcing her tired, wobbly legs toward the direction her ears had caught the faint sounds of other members from Windclan in the distance. Hoping to soon reunite with everyone and getting the help that her friend needs to aid his vision.
