Slow Down, Just Breathe
By this point the constant storms overhead had become nothing but background noise, the rumble of thunder a lullaby that she occasionally found herself waking from to soothe her kits fears of the booming noise. Tonight however it was not the cries of a kit that woke her but a sudden onslaught of rainwater dousing her, sending the molly into a coughing spluttering fit as she struggled to her feet. Water. Water was pouring into the nursery and taking everything it could with it.

Panic claws at her throat, a yowl leaving the Gale Guard with an urgency she hadn't felt since the night the barn caught fire: "EVERYONE WAKE UP!!! Get up, the nursery is flooding!"

Instinctively she turned to her own nest, a surge of protectiveness urging her to take her kits and leave everyone else behind to their fate. She squashed it down. She would no such thing. "Hurry, my little bees..!" Somehow her voice came out evenly despite how frayed her nerves were even as the water rose around their paws. "Get out of the nursery and onto the tall rock, find Goldenroar and your father, I need to help everyone else evacuate. Hold each other's tails so you don't get separated." 'Or swept away, hopefully.'

With a final nudge to each of her kits to be sure they understood, Honeyflower turned to the other caretakers with widened eyes. "Don't shove, there's enough time for everyone to get out! Let the parents with younger kits get out first, I'll be right behind you all!"

Ravenmask wakes with a start- the warning call from Dustystar more than enough to get him to spring into action, bad leg or not. Luckily enough, he's close to the nursery. He wades quickly through the water, snorting it out of his nose when he stumbles, and stops at the entrance to the nursery burrow.

"Come on then little'uns," he huffs, grabbing a couple by the scruffs and swinging them onto his back one at a time. He blinks his eyes against the rain to see where Dustystar is directing the evacuees, and begins a slow but steady swim with the kits safely above water on his back.

She is sleeping as peacefully as possible - as peacefully as one can sleep really when the world has been falling for days on end and the adults keep saying it'll be fine (they're lying, it's falling and they're lying) - paws twitch at every crash of thunder, restless and fidgeting. It doesn't take much to wake up the sleeping child, the loud panicked yowl from Honeyflower as water touches toes and pelt begins to soak. As quickly as she can Rubblekit is finding herself on her feet, shaking and head whipping around, mismatched eyes widening as the sky continues to fall, as the world around her continues to end, and despite the instructions that come from the queen it takes the kit more moments than she would have liked to admit to get moving.

Moments that likely would kill her, now that she felt the water lapping at her stomach instead of just her toes, and she didn't know how to swim. She heard stories of RiverClan, whispers of the water-dwellers, of the fish-eaters that were along the border of WindClan, and how she wished she had shown up in their territory now for maybe she would have learned those survival skills. But she didn't think she'd like fish much, and Goldenroar wasn't the deputy of RiverClan, but her hesitance as she had been shaking in the back of the nursery as she now tried to trudge through the water towards the front now caused her paws to move slowly, rapid-flowing water causing her to trip.

Her head dipped under the water as it rose, and as the brown kitten found herself bobbing down and then back up she gasped for air, scrambling to touch the ground as she tried her best to move out, to move away, but she was floating now, flowing away from the friends she had made. "H-help!" She'd manage to sputter-cry out, paws splashing desperately for something to cling onto as the water began to take her away.

When her mother screams, her ears do not hear it. For when the molly wakes the nursery, there is one less kit in her nest.

Hours earlier, Lotuskit listened to the songs of the wild. The thunder above no longer scared her, and the whipping winds enthralled her in their whistle-tones. She planted her paws outside the nursery, risked her very life, and used the cover of night to dart away. One could say it was StarClan calling to her, saving her from a demise far too young. Someone else could say that she's just lucky. In any case, the young tortoiseshell finds herself far from WindClan's camp when the wails of surprise and fear start erupting.

Far, with no idea of how to get home. The rain clogs her senses, deafening her in every sense of the word. Lotuskit continues forth even as it gets harsher, only knowing perseverance rather than surrender.

'Cause you are loved, you are loved more than you know
I hereby pledge all of my days to prove it so
Though your heart is far too young to realize
The unimaginable light you hold inside

.

The thunder crashed above like the heavens were splitting open, and the moment Swiftwatcher heard Honeyflower's yowl echo across camp, his heart seized in his chest. A flood. Water. No, not again. He couldn't lose anyone again. He was running before thought could even form, dark fur already slicked to his sides as the rain pummeled him, yellow eyes wide with panic. The camp floor was already a river, and the nursery... StarClan help them, the nursery was half-swallowed by the rising flood. He could see shapes moving within, small and frantic. His grandkits. Honeyflower.

" Honeyflower! I'm here! " he shouted, his voice cracking through the storm as he shouldered his way through the nursery entrance. The water was freezing, biting at his legs, but he barely felt it over the thundering in his heart. The sight that met him made his breath catch, Honeyflower, drenched and wild-eyed, ushering her kits toward safety with more calm than he thought possible. She was her namesake, sweet, but unyielding.

" Honeycombkit! Stay close! " he called, his tone booming but warm, trying to guide her toward his voice. " Grandfather's here, up you go! " He lowered himself without hesitation, pressing his long fur against the rising current. " Climb on my back, quickly now! You'll be safe, I promise! " He felt the tiny paws scramble up his shoulders, felt Honeycombkit's claws cling to his thick pelt as the water surged higher. His tail lashed, heart thundering with more terror than he dared show. For a split second, he saw Bumblebee, her beautiful eyes still and body unmoving. His breath caught.

Not again. Not one more.

" Honeyflower! Where is Lotuskit?! " he called to her, yellow eyes wide with work as he tried to usher Branchkit and Bunnykit closer to him.

Branchkit coughs out the dirty water, the brackish liquid having invaded her mouth and nose. Her senses are dulled, but the cry of Momma gets her up and trying to stay above the lapping water. Her eyes dart around, but her sister is nowhere to be seen.

"Momma!" she cries out. "Momma, where's Lotus?" She looks around wildly as Swiftwatcher ushers her closer, her tiny paws struggling to find purchase in his fur.

"We can't leave her behind," she whimpers, looking up to the warrior who came to rescue them. "I promised... I promised I wouldn't ever leave her behind again!"

The cream-and-white molly woke up to the sound of wooshing water and the panicked cry of kittens. Water sweeps over her paws and her chest before she rises, drawing a disgusted gasp out of her - and then filling her with immense dread.
"Kittens!"
she cries, hurrying to pluck her three children to their feet before the water floods their little heads. Whatever drowsiness from sleep that might have had a hold over Plague, is quickly washed away by alertness as she swings Yewkit over her back, and hands Phantomkit and Drearykit to the nearest helper.

"This is crazy!"
Plague roars as she half-wades, half-swims her way to the entrance of the den, keeping her eyes glued on the two kittens she had handed off, and keeping her ears flicked behind her to listen to the breathing of Yewkit.
"Hold on tight, Yewkit. Mama doesn't care if you have to use your claws right now."

There's a particular order to the evacuation - but her paws ache to get out now.
"Go. Hurry,"
she ushers in a panicked hiss to whoever is ahead of her, eyes wide with horror. The forest would never have flooded so terribly. What have I born my children into?

It was on instinct that Cometpaw ran, as soon as he woke, he understood the throes of panic. After looking over to Eclipsepaw, first making sure he was okay, Cometpaw gave his brother a look, one that could only be understood as 'I'm going to make sure they're okay.'

He bolted out of the apprentice den as quickly as he could under Merrystalk's warning and took the quickest path he could possibly manage to get to the nursery with all the might he could muster. Each passing day he became more and more like his namesake- fast, bright, hopeful.

Cometpaw had experienced disaster and helplessness before, but back then he was younger, smaller, weaker, slower. Now, he was more determined than ever to be a better cat. Now, he was older, bigger, stronger, faster. He could do more, he would do more.

Other cats had arrived to help, for which Cometpaw was grateful, he wanted to do more but he knew it was stupid to do everything alone. He exchanged a quick glance with Honeyflower, noting that Swiftwatcher had come for her and her kittens. Cometpaw searched for Owlbear and the 'little birdies' Sloshing through the rising water, Cometpaw got as close as he could to them. "We gotta go, miss Owlbear- I'm here to help!"

Yeah the world is still sleepin' when I keep on dreamin' for me,
And their words are just whispers and lies that I'll never believe!

Dimmingsun knows that he had been right to trust his gut, even if guilt threatens to fray him at the edges for it. He had abandoned his duty, in a way, by leaving and allowing the water to carry his herbs off... but the medicine den had been full of cats looking to help, and there is precious little any of them can do now. It had gotten too crowded. Meadowpaw had been thrown into near-hysteria at the sight of her previous mentor's shredded nest. Too loud. Too much. He had needed a break from it- and he knows that's selfish, but at least he will make up for it now.

He stops at the entrance of the nursery—not because of the usual courtesy that he gives by asking mothers if he is free to enter, but rather because he needs to brace himself. The camp is in disarray, too; he had caught glimpses of Dustystar and the others trying to make sense of it all.

For the sake of the vulnerable kits, Dimmingsun shelves his despair away.

His eye adjusts quickly when he enters—truth be told, the difference in light levels is almost unnoticeable, considering how the dark storm clouds hover over WindClan. His gaze rakes over the nursery and its inhabitants, deciding who needs urgent help, and who would only get slowed down by his interruption.

A brown head appears above the surface of the water, only to get plunged straight into its depths a moment later.
"Rubblekit!"
Dimmingsun wastes no time: he dives in and all but fishes the kit out, careful not to crush her but with enough force to stop the water from carrying her away from him. With her scruff caught between his teeth, Dimmingsun holds her above the water, and ensures that his footing remains stable underwater. After a moment, he is able to place the soaked kit onto his back.
"Hold onto me,"
he instructs.

He moves deeper in, surveying the muddy liquid for any other kit that may need his assistance. That's when he hears it; the desperate cries for Lotuskit, the awful realization that someone is missing. There is no proper nest anymore to try and track down her trail.

Dimmingsun faces Honeyflower, Swiftwatcher, and most importantly, Branchkit.
"You have to get out."
His voice is easier to keep level, now that he doesn't have to watch the medicine cat den's destruction.
"We aren't leaving Lotuskit, but if there are less cats cramped in here, then it will be easier to see her."

Saving @Rubblekit and open for any other kits to climb onto his back!

When he saw the look his brother gave him Eclipsepaw's instinct screeched at him to shake his head, to discourage Cometpaw from playing hero. The rain was relentless and the water kept rising. They shouldn't go into it any further, they ought to leave! Now! They specifically did not go with their uncle and sister in RiverClan partly because of the water and now he was willingly running further into it for...? Eclipsepaw gave a heavy sigh, Cometpaw had always been so selfless he was sure it would get him killed one day. He was being stupid and Eclipsepaw was even dumber for following after him!

Bolting after the ginger tail of his brother they'd head for the flooding nursery, cats ran this way and that trying to evacuate who they could as quickly as possible. His mentor, Swiftwatcher had come to help already too, his calls to Honeyflower in search of some of the kits made the apprentice flick an ear, his pupils thinning almost to slits. Would they lose more cats like they had back at the barn fire? What cruel irony that the next thing to strike WindClan after the blaze was flooding waters.

Hissing under his breath as the water began to cling to his pelt as he and Cometpaw entered the nursery he'd already figured who his brother might try and help first since most of the other kittens were already receiving assistance from other cats. But also because of what the little nest family meant to Cometpaw. His long ears would flick back, pressing against his skull as he searched for Owlbear's litter. They were probably the biggest kittens of the whole nursery by now, but leave it to Cometpaw to try and carry them out anyways. "You take one, I'll take the other" He'd lean down somewhat to try and either pick up the younger cat or let them clamber onto his usually stunning pelt that was now slicked and sopping wet from all the rain... "Let's get you out of here!"

The nursery had erupted with activity as cats raced to get everyone out as the waters rose and started to fill the once safe den. Hootkit found herself pressing into one of the back walls, her pelt prickling up along her spine and her eyes as wide as an owl's from all the panic. Cats trying to find the younger kittens of the nursery, others picking some up by the scruff in order to haul them out safely, water splashing with each quickened pawstep. Her own chest quickening as fear rose and clawed its way around her heart. Was she even really awake right now? Or was this all just a very scary nightmare?

Eventually Cometpaw and his brother had arrived but she couldn't quite hear what they were saying, everything seemed to be ringing with just the sound of her own heartbeat as she stared up at them looking like a deer in headlights. A familiar scene to Cometpaw perhaps, since the last time it had been himself who was in her paws. She hoped mama had made it out already or would make it out okay and her sisters too, hopefully they were who the two brothers had come to help? She was suddenly lifted up off of her awkwardly large paws, water dripping from her pelt as she was picked up by the scruff-- Cometpaw had grabbed her to pull out to safety first! She blinked slowly at him before looking back to the nursery as sound slowly started to return to her.

"Mama... P-please help mama! She can't breathe good when things are scary!"

————————— There might be something outside your window. ✦

Their heart raced in panic as Honeyflower's voice called out. It had been cold, painfully so, but she had no idea the severity of the situation. The sudden flooding made the kitten freeze in place, swallowing hard in terror. But as warriors filtered in, grabbing the younger kittens, they pressed themself against the side of her mother, shiny eyes trying to stifle fear. "It's gonna be okay, Mama..." She muttered, trying to reassure herself, too.

Finchkit and Hootkit were both very close to their apprenticeships, so they were the biggest kittens in the nursery, and they were going to be the last to be helped. They had to be brave, even as the kitten shook with the sheer cold that crept into her pelt. She saw as her sister began to panic, Finch trudging over to nudge her face against the other. "We're g-gonna be okay, Hootie." Someone had to be brave, Finch had to be brave.

Though as soon as Cometpaw and Eclipsepaw darted into the nursery, also soaked to the bone from the rain, Finchkit felt all the braver. It would be okay, especially as the pair immediately b-lined for the kittens. Cometpaw grabbed Hootkit, and Eclipsepaw lowered himself to let Finchkit scramble up on his back. The creme scrap of fur, pelt dripping with water, now clung to the tortoiseshell like their life depended on it- Maybe it did.

But, it seemed the kittens had the same thought, Finch reaching a paw out for Owlbear. "Mama, c'mon! Someone help Mama!" They had seen the panic in her mom's face, the heaving wheeze from her chest and the flecks of blood in the midst of her panic when Finch went missing. The kitten was terrified that it would happen again. "Please." She squeaked, desperately, tail curling up as she realised how fast the water was rising, burying herself closer into Eclipsepaw's pelt, her only sanctuary from the cruelty of the water.

Bunnykit had not stirred when Lotuskit clambered out of her shared nest, supposedly moving with enough childish stealth to avoid rousing herself, Honeycombkit, and Honeyflower alike. She wakes when rainwater douses her, surrounding her in her nest as Honeyflower splutters and rises to her feet. Bunnykit protests, rubbing her face with her paws and trying to stuff them into her ears as water trickles unpleasantly from overhead. In fact, when Honeyflower raises the cry, Bunnykit does not even realize Lotuskit is not lying beside her until she's already been washed out of the nest into deeper waters in the nursery. Bunnykit is barely able to gasp from shock when her little head is forced underwater by another torrential wave of rain. She screams around her mouthful of water, thrashing her little brown paws as fiercely as she can to no avail.

It is a long few seconds before Bunnykit's head pops up over the water again. She coughs, water spewing in an ugly fashion from her nose and mouth. She gasps for air, and though she manages to get a good amount into her lungs, she is pulled under again by another current. Bunnykit feels panic rising in her chest as her lungs begin to burn. She thinks about all those times she had heard about StarClan. Their ancestors. Dead ancestors. Was that meant to be her destination? Pulled to and fro and battered until she would awake, drenched in their starry hunting grounds?

The current of water rushing into and through the nursery pushes Bunnykit's body around until she's finally pinned against one of the nursery walls. She scrabbles at the tall stalks of grass until she's managed to cling onto a pawful and pull herself into them. Though they, too, seem like they are coming unrooted and bending beneath the force of the floods. "HELP!" she shrieks, voice hoarse and ragged from being subjected to deluge "Help me please! Mama I'm scared!" Whatever indignation had once been there is now washed away by dirty rainwater. What remains now is childish terror and a fervent need to be helped.

Slow Down, Just Breathe
It's chaos. Mothers and their kits all shouting, panicked and drenched in murky water. Her father in law has already gathered two of her four onto his back and for a moment, just a moment, she allows herself to breathe. Until his cry asking after the whereabouts of one of her daughters sends Honeyflower's heart beating wildly in her chest.

No. No, she had JUST seen her. Lotuskit had been curled up against her just before they'd all fallen asleep-why wasn't she here? Every possible terrible scenario bursts to the forefront of her mind, and she whips her head around wildly to spy something, anything that could possibly point to her daughter. A paw reaching through the water, a tail, anything.

"Swiftwatcher!" The water is so loud around them its a wonder she can hear herself think let alone anyone else's words. "Get them out of here..!"

'Please.'

There are too many bodies in here, limbs and tails flailing as clanmates scramble to get out of the flooding nursery, hasty apologies given by some while most are pushing themselves out of the den like a river on their own.

Dimmingsun is there, somehow pushed himself through the cats trying to leave.

You have to get out.

A part of the young mother knows and understands the logic of it. Knows her daughter would be easier to find with fewer bodies in here-Lotuskit may very well already be outside even. Still, panic and protectiveness makes her bristle, teeth bared at the medicine cat in a growl. "I'm not abandoning my daughter to drown." A further retort dies in her throat as another wave of water rushes in and nearly knocks her off her feet. A scream cuts her off.

Bunnykit.

"MAMA'S COMING!" Her paws are moving before she even registers that its her own voice cracking in fear. Claws struggle for purchase in the muddy floor of the nursery, trying to keep her head raised above the water but another wave makes her slip and the molly goes under.

She had been rather proud of her thick fur; able to keep herself and her kits warm and dry in the recent rain and cold. Now weighed down and soaking wet, it felt more like a deathtrap. It's the shock of the cold enveloping her that causes her to involuntarily gasp, water rushing into her open mouth and filling her lungs until she resurfaces with a splutter. Bunnykit's cries are drowned out by the new ringing in her ears but stubbornly Honey paddles forward until she's against the far wall her daughter had been pinned to.

"I've-" Water splashing into her mouth prompts her to cough. "I've got you, little bee, mama's here. Climb onto my back and hold on as tight as you can ok?" There's a tremble to her voice, her limbs as well from the cold and effort of swimming with such thick fur soaked through. But still, she was not going to die here. Was not going to let her daughter die here with her.

Kicking furiously she manages to turn against the current, barely keeping her head above water as the gale guard slowly, painstakingly, struggles to the safety of the nursery entrance.

Owlbear scrambles to her feet, shaking her fur out though the water has already seeped in down to her bones— "my fletchlings!" she yelps, looking around desperately. Already she feels her throat closing up, a tightness in her chest. They're so small, and all this water– it just keeps getting higher–

To their great relief, Comet and Eclipse are soon rushing in, scooping up her kits, though the little ones shout for her.

"I'm alright, just–" cough, "go! Now!"

She turns around, eyes scanning the rough surface of the water. There's more shouting, Honeyflower searching desperately for her kits. Lotuskit is gone, either lost in the water or already out. Owlbear chooses to believe in the second option. She sees Honeyflower struggle with Bunnykit and wades through the water, breathing ragged and uneven, she calls out–

"Honeyflower, this way!" another cough, this one particularly painful. "Come on, out, out, out!"

By the time Cloverbloom caught sight of the nursery, her yowls had quieted down to silence, drowned out by the rain and her own exhaustion. She'd never realized how heavy all her fur was, and how exhausting it made even wading, let alone swimming. Her legs were definitely starting to feel the strain of it now, but she was so close to the nursery and was able to make out individual faces leaving, most of them holding kits.

A bit more clumsy paddling brought to the nursery entrance, where she heard at least two of the caregivers' voices still inside. She could just barely touch the ground here enough to wade inside, quickly finding herself next to Owlbear. She gave her clanmate a brief worried glance at the sound of her cough, before kicking off and swimming closer to Honeyflower, hoping to get close enough to help if anything went wrong. "This way! We're almost there!"
