what a shame we all became

Rain was tired. True, the tumbling bodies in her bulging belly weighed her down, and her weary paws dragged through fallen leaves with each step. But there was something else. Something bone-deep in her that longed for rest. She supposed it was the ache in her heart; the longing for a proper home. She thought she'd had it. She thought she knew what home meant. Glimpses of Jet's bright amber eyes flashed through her mind. She grimaced. I chased him away, she scolded herself. And she believed it, to an extent. On the other paw, her heart had shattered to see how quickly he'd turned on her. The first suggestion of wanting something different had frightened him off. Her request for stability, for a safe home for their kits, had been met with disdain. And so he'd left. He continued to roam, letting his paws take him where they desired. She was left alone, to find a safe space on her own.

She'd tried the Twolegplace first, but it was stinky and noisy and full of potential threats to her kits. Despite falling in with some decently friendly kittypets, this was the opposite of what she'd been hoping for. She knew close proximity to Twolegs meant potentially losing her kits to them. She couldn't risk it. So, over a meal of the strange hard pellets the kittypets shared with her, one of them mentioned the strange groups of wild cats that lived in the woods, just a few days' walk away. They had laws and leaders and protected each other and would probably take her in, if they didn't eat her first. She felt hope spark in her chest for the first time in a moon. Wrapping her tail around her swollen belly, she guessed her kits would arrive in about half a moon. That should give her plenty of time to find these cats and see if she could make a home with them.

She set out the next morning, and had been walking almost nonstop since. She was beyond exhausted, she was hungry, and she needed a good groom, but every vague whiff of catscent on the wind spurred her on. She found herself padding into a pine forest, surrounded by foliage and the sounds of scuttling prey. Beyond the tang of pinesap was a strong catscent. She could have cried from joy. She'd found them. Her pace increased to huge, awkward bounds as the scent grew stronger and stronger until, finally, she was almost overwhelmed by it. It was as if they'd drawn an invisible line along the earth.
"A border?"
she panted. She looked from side to side. The marker seemed arbitrary to her, but what did she know? She lifted a paw to step forward, then hesitated.

Suddenly, she found herself second-guessing everything. In her desperation, she hadn't even stopped to ask herself why these cats would take her in. She was another mouth to feed, with more on the way. She could hunt, sure, but not well in her current state. She placed her paw back on the ground, safely on the outside of the boundary. What if Jet had been right? What if they were meant to be loners, meant to be free, to wander? Would her quest for stability put her kits at even more risk, surrounded by strangers in the woods? She felt the gentle kick of kits in her belly and she wanted to wail with indecision. She was so, very tired!

A noise ahead snapped her from her thoughts. She immediately sank back, crouching possessively over her belly as a growl formed in her throat.

The branches swayed under her paws, her body swift and lithe as she surveyed the border. The rest of the patrol was close behind, she just wanted to get a closer look from up high. Chrysalisgaze was about to report nothing of importance, when she spotted movement - a cat, right at the border of the forest, unfamiliar, at least as far as Chrysalisgaze could tell. The cat appeared to be waiting, not crossing the scent-marked line, making Chrysalisgaze wonder what she was up to. She would need to get a closer look to determine.
She quickly climbed down the pine, her claws leaving marks in the bark and she landed on the forest floor. She signaled with her tail for the approaching patrol to be alert and she swiftly joined them. "There is a cat at the border." she explained. "Outside the border, as if waiting, but we should be careful nonetheless."
With the rest of the patrol alerted, they crept along the trees towards the border, using the forest's shade to their advantage. The border was not far and soon the patrol spotted the stranger - a grey she-cat. She looked more anxious and tired than dangerous and Chrysalisgaze gave Duskpool a look letting him know she thought this cat was no threat.
As her former mentor nodded, she stepped out. "Who are you?" she asked, voice steady and strong, but not threatening, merely demanding an answer. "What do you want from us?"
That's when the she-cat moved her tail, revealing a round belly, so round Chrysalisgaze was surprised the cat still stood on her paws. She quickly rushed to the cat's side, ready to support her, shall her paws give in. "Oh, you're with kits!" she exclaimed, more to her clanmates than the she-cat herself. "Oh you poor thing, are you tired? Hungry?" Chrysalisgaze knew how hard being with kits was on her mate's body, and Starlingtrail could rest and relax in camp, Chrysalisgaze fulfilling every last of her wish and craving. How hard must it have been for this cat to travel all by herself while carrying little ones in her belly?
Chrysalisgaze didn't care how she looked in front of her clanmates, the expecting cat's comfort the only thing on her mind. She didn't look like she came from somewhere near and Chrysalisgaze doubted a cat this heavily pregnant would travel all the way to their border if she didn't have a good reason to do so. She glared at her clanmates "What are you waiting for? This cat clearly needs help, so let's help her!"

QUAILSTEP
It had started as a standard border patrol. Well, as standard as border patrols could be nowadays, with ThunderClan twice refusing to keep the line. As such, Qauilstep had been on alert the entire time, even if they weren't by a ThunderClan border. Couldn't be too cautious nowadays.

Chrysalisgaze stopped the patrol as her nose picked up the scent of an expecting she-cat, loner by the lack of Clan-scent on her pelt. Her paws shifted. After the battle, resources were wearing thin, but with the threats from the other Clans, wouldn't filling the ranks help? What would Hawkstar's verdict be?

In any case, the code rang true in her mind. No cat can neglect a kit in pain or danger, regardless of if they are Clanborn or not. These kits may be unborn, but the fear-scent on their mother certainly indicated some danger. And with leaf-bare on the way, would a queen on her own be able to care for her kits?

Quailstep padded forward beside Chrysalisgaze.

"We're warriors of SkyClan. We mean no harm to you or your kits - but we do need to ask why you've found yourself on our border."

Let me die, let me drown, lay my bones in the ground
I will still come around when the time for sleep is through
Over hill, over dale, through the valley and vale
Do not weep, do not wail, I am coming home to you

Teaselfeather couldn't help the way their hackles rose, ears pressing flat against their skull. Trust had long since begun to fracture, piece by piece... Yet this one, she carried the scent of an expectant mother. And they knew the rules well: help queens, always. Their mismatched eyes narrowed briefly as they studied the stranger. They said nothing at first, letting their clanmates take the lead each cat reacting in their own way. Chrysalisgaze, of course, wanted to help the pregnant queen.

A sigh escaped them, shoulders sagging as they dipped their head in reluctant acceptance. Their clanmate was right. No matter who this stranger was or where she came from, she was in need. And despite all that had happened, the broken trust, the spilled blood, the pain left behind by ThunderClan.... They could not simply turn away. Their gaze softened as they stepped forward, giving a gentle nod to the she-cat. " I am Teaselfeather,... " they murmured, voice quiet as a breath of wind. " You'll be safe to kit in our camp. There are caregivers there, they'll help you through it. "

They knew for a fact that Snowveil would help this queen, in her own way. The blind caregiver was a grand warrior in her prime, but they knew how kind they were to those expecting and the kits that tumbled around. Even if sometimes she seemed gruff and harsh... There was a golden heart beneath the scars.

DUSKPOOL
The air carried faint traces of SkyClan, barely noticeable beneath the sparse growth, havin' been out leadin' a patrol when conversation reached his battered ears, the bulky warrior frowned, pressin' toward the unclaimed boarder with a swish of his wooly plume. His wooly plume brushed against Chrysalisgaze's side with a soft rumble in greetin'. His molten iris landed on the pregnant feline, head cocked, surveyin' the outsider, breath leavin' him in a soft puff of air.

"Yer on Skyclan's land." He remarked, his voice low and steady, like distant thunder rollin' across grassy hills. His tail flickered once, slow, betrayin' thought rather than aggression. She must've been runnin' from somethin', if she's out here with danger at just about every corner. Pressin' forward, Duskpool glanced at the others before settlin' on the molly, "Got a name, kiddo?" He asked slowly, "Reckon there's a reason why yer here, eh?" His left brow quirked upward, "Shouldn't be wanderin' alone, but with foxes n' dogs runnin' loose, but reckon yer in good paws now, ain't anyone here wantin' to hurt ya, can tell ya that."

Twistin' a bulky head, "One of ya go n' fetch Hawkstar, doubt there'll be an issue, not with a caregiver." There was one thing Duskpool respected, despite everythin' that's happened these few moons, and it was Hawkstar's regard for kits and caregivers. Shakin' wooly fur, the Sun Guard breathed wearily, "If yer willin' to join squirt, I've gottta warn ya it ain't gonna be easy, there's rules and codes to follow, but reckon yer'll pick it up well." He settled at last, molten iris sweepin' over the sleek-furred she-cat.

"Ya can rest now, kiddo, we've got ya." He reassured the tired molly, molten copper growin' warmer, "Why don't we get ya somethin' to drink and if yer hunger, reckon one of us can get ya somethin'." He glanced at the others, head tilted, lettin' whoever accept the task, if wantin' while Duskpool waited for Hawkstar, bulky frame comin' to settle outside the border, givin' him an advantage to peer subtly at their surroundin' for lurkin' danger.

  • DUSKPOOL stands like a storm given flesh, broad-shouldered and unyielding. His frame was built from the bloodlines of a Norwegian Forest and Maine Coon, every inch steeped in the weight of a life hard-lived. His pelt is a wooly black smoke mantle, thick as winter fog and marked with faint mackerel stripes. Old scars score his flanks and shoulders like lightning carved into the night sky, with each one telling a story that was paid for in blood.

One molten-copper eye burns fierce and unblinking, sharp enough to cut through lies, while the other is nothing but a hollowed ruin. A sunken relic of a battle he walked away from when he shouldn't have. HAWKSTAR.

in the woods somewhere

"No need," Hawkstar breezed past her Sun Guard with a flick of her tapered tail, one good eye trained on the young queen and her rounded belly. She couldn't be any older than Flowercloud's kits were now: full-grown warriors, freshly stretched into their adult forms. It was odd to think that they were old enough to have kits of their own now... weren't they just babies? Mewling, squirming babes at their mother's breast? Fresh apprentices with wide-eyes and bushy tails, staring up at their leader with a dizzying sense of awe and wonder?

Hawkstar, very suddenly, all too violently, felt very aged standing next to Teaselfeather.

"I don't turn away cats in need, especially not when the cat in need has kits on the way. Welcome to SkyClan, young one."

what a shame we all became

The growl rumbling in her throat quickly sputtered out as a she-cat approached rapidly, rushing to her side and demanding help. Rain's gaze followed the stranger's, her eyes widening as cat after cat emerged from seemingly nowhere. She felt rooted to the spot as they approached her, despite the hammering of her heart in her chest. One seemed hesitant, but declared they were warriors of
Skyclan
. The next seemed even more hesitant, perhaps even aggressive. It took everything in her to not duck away from their gaze. But after a moment, their gaze softened and they offered their name.
Teaselfeather,
she turned the name over in her head. They seemed to be around her age, though they had a much more haggard look to them.

Next, a large tom stepped forward. He was clearly on good terms with the other cats, but his appearance was even more grizzled than Teaselfeather's. She swallowed hard, trying to hold his intense, one-eyed gaze.
Kiddo,
he called her. Ordinarily she might have bristled at the thought of being seen as a youngling, but sitting before him, she couldn't deny just how young she felt. He was large and strong and seemed to carry more wisdom than anyone she'd ever known.

He suggested someone fetch Hawkstar - whoever that was - and one final cat materialized, brushing past the plumy tom to regard her. She could only assume this was Hawkstar, and that Hawkstar was their leader. There was a finality in her voice, an answer to a question she hadn't even dared to ask. Rain felt like she might be swept off her paws by the wave of relief that washed over her.
"Th-thank you,"
she sputtered. The rumbled warning about their life not being easy echoed in her mind, and she paused to consider. The cats in front of her clearly had not lived easy lives. But there was a spark in them all. They had seen her at the lowest point in her life and they had all extended a paw in welcome. The scars on their pelts told her one thing: they could fight, and they could protect her kits. Emotion threatened to overwhelm her, making it difficult to think straight. She was so tired.

"My name is Rain,"
She tried to ignore the trembling in her paws, dipping her head to Hawkstar.
"Thank you so much. I will work hard to contribute, however I can. Whatever I need to do."
She lifted her gaze and let it fall over each of the strangers around her. And to think, the kittypets had warned her that they might eat her. Instead, they'd offered to hunt for her! She supposed she should have been a bit more suspicious of these cats, but something told her that she was safe, that her kits were safe. She found the home she'd been hoping for. She swayed on her paws and brushed against the black and white she-cat who'd been the first to approach.
"Sorry, I'm uh- I'm very tired,"
She murmured, trying to right herself.

Chrysalisgaze was glad she did not need to persuade her clanmates to help the young cat. Sure, some of them were sceptical at first, but clearly she posed no threat to the battle-hardened warriors. And then Hawkstar showed up and Chrysalisgaze felt warm inside at the kindness of her leader. It was true that Hawkstar was harsh and cold sometimes, but that's what made her a good leader. Her heart still beat in the right place and she would never turn away cats in need - especially not ones carrying young.
"Rain." Chrysalisgaze repeated her name. "I'm gonna take good care of you." Rain staggered on her tired paws and Chrysalisgaze offered the she-cat her shoulder to lean against, supporting her as she lead her towards the forest.
"My mate has kits too, when I'm not around, I'm sure Starlingtrail will help you with anything you need." she gently spoke to her. "And I'm sure yours and my kits will get along nicely, once they're here." Chrysaligaze hoped her words were reassuring and not overwhelming to the cat, distracting her from the pain and tiredness she must be feeling. Soon they would be in camp and Rain could rest for as long as she needed. For now, though, she needed to hold on just a little longer.

QUAILSTEP
She looked up as Hawkstar approached, dipping her head in deference to their leader's decision. Upon further talk, it seemed the expecting mother wasn't merely small.... she was young. Who would leave her like this?

"My Clanmates are right," she mewed, moving to Rain's other side. "You don't need to worry. It's good to meet you, Rain. I'm Quailstep - when we get to camp we'll make certain you have a nice nest and some fresh prey. Our medicine cat, Swallowbreeze, can check you over and make sure you and your kits stay healthy. Things will be alright."

An ear flicked, and Teaselfeather's mismatched hues lingered on the king as he approached. Their gaze narrowed for a moment before they dipped their head respectfully. Ever welcoming, that was Hawkstar. It wasn't in her nature to turn away those in need. Relief trickled through Teaselfeather's veins, softening the tension in their shoulders, and a faint smile ghosted across their muzzle before they turned their gaze back to Rain. She was young, their age perhaps and yet already expecting kits. What cruel twist of fate had left her alone in this state? What promise of forever had she been given, only to be left behind? But then again… maybe there was a reason. Maybe the father was gone, lost to battle or to time itself.

" It's a pleasure to meet you, Rain. " Teaselfeather murmured, their voice quiet and almost melodic. There was a gentleness to their movement as they stepped closer to Chrysalisgaze, offering a small, reassuring nod. Those two would take good care of her until her time came, of that, they were certain.

" You can rest in the nursery, with the kits and the caregivers. " they purred softly, warmth flickering in their tone before glancing to Hawkstar once more and dipping their head in respect. Then, with Chrysalisgaze at their side, they would begin to guide Rain back toward the safety of SkyClan's camp.

LEADER OF SKYCLAN

.

Hawkstar nods approvingly. "Chrysalisgaze, please be sure to introduce Rain to Starlingtrail and get her settled in. Would the rest of you set your sights of some food for our new friend? It's a bad idea to carry kittens on an empty stomach."

Leafbare could not be a less welcome beast on the horizon. Hawkstar was loathe to imagine all the things that could possibly go wrong with newborns in the winter. This would be SkyClan's first official winter in this forest, away from the cavernous hide-aways of the ravine and protection from the colder elements. What would be their plan now, now that they had a completely new territory to learn under the leafbare snows?

Was she being less than honest to this stranger, implicitly promising safety when there was so little she knew on this horizon?

Hawkstar chewed the inside of her cheek thoughtfully. Best to talk her council members on this before she went and stirred up the masses with her own brand of paranoia.
