Not some average bones, I believe in love!

Torrentpaw's paws travelled quicker than they ever had to Fourtrees that night, his heart crashing against his chest with the hope that she would be there. It seemed like moons had passed since he had last seen Stoatpaw, and every day after their meeting that he hadn't shown up for, his heart longed with the familiar, but odd sense of homesickness.

The reckless anger he had for Adderfang had been let go, but it was not without consequences. The trust he had dampened with his clanmates--and surely Stoatpaw--was the cost of his selfishness, and not a day had gone by that it didn't gnaw at his heart. The thought of not seeing her flower-speckled pelt, and instead an empty hollow in the moonlight of Fourtrees, made him feel sick.

Please forgive me, Stoatpaw. I promise I'll explain everything. I promise I'll make it up to you, and everyone else in Riverclan.

Pushing himself into the clearing, Torrentpaw's eyes flickered hastily across his surroundings, breath caught in his throat. His fear had been confirmed, but not all hope was lost. Ears swivelling in all directions, his gaze travelled upward towards the moon. To his relief, he was earlier than usual, as he couldn't help but leave the apprentice's den at the first sign that everyone was asleep. Silently thanking the timing, the young tom sat down, letting out the breath he had been holding on to.

Though as moments passed, Torrentpaw couldn't sit still any longer. Rising to his paws, he paced quickly back and forth across the grass as he stared at the ground, lost in intense thought.

Part of her didn't know why she was going to Fourtrees, her heart still ached from that night almost a moon ago. But, she made a promise to herself to placate herself, and this was all she needed to do, just... Check, see if he's there or not. She can make up her mind when she checks the clearing.

She steeled herself, expecting nothing; she hadn't decided to think the best, that'd only get her hopes up and break herself all over again. Having left later than she usually did, she thought I'd give Torrentpaw a chance to arrive there first, but she couldn't bear to wait again.

As she made it to Fourtrees, she hesitated. What if he wasn't there? What if she had come all this way just for him to have given up on her already? Stoatpaw's stomach turned, hesitating. There was a moment she considered turning back, going back to Shadowclan and hunting rather than chasing someone who may not even be there...

But if she didn't check, she would never know. She would never get the confirmation, he could be there... Right there, just out of sight...

Just the thought, the possibility, made her fear falter; it was enough for her to take a step into the clearing. A smile crossed her maw as that familiar rosette tom stood there again, albeit he seemed rather distracted, not seeing her approach. "Torrentpaw?" His name tumbled from her lips, her eyes glittering in a welling of joy she hadn't thought she could feel again.

As soon as Stoatpaw's voice reached his ears, Torrentpaw instantly stopped in his tracks, his gaze fluttering over to hers. A surge of joy flowed through his chest, relief flooding his senses as all the fear he had prior faded away just at the sight of her.

"Stoatpaw!" Torrentpaw exclaimed, wasting no time reaching the other apprentice. He skidded to a halt in front of her, and as if his body acted on its own accord, he brushed his cheek against hers, his eyes shut tight with joy as he held her as close as possible. Chin reaching across her shoulder blades, a purr escaped his throat as he breathed in the familiar scent of her coat, the flowers dotting across her pelt tickling his nose.

Drawing himself away from her, Torrentpaw met her gaze as he parted his jaws to speak. "I have so much to explain…" He began, trailing off at the surprised look in Stoatpaw's eyes.

Torrentpaw's fur bristled, the tips of his ears turning warm. Butterflies seemed to flutter around his stomach as the realization of what he had just done settled. He blinked, confused at this new feeling that had found its way into his heart. It wasn't the same feeling as when he touched noses with Squidpaw or greeted Galepaw. No, this was different. Sure, he loved them, but they didn't make his stomach flutter and pelt grow warm like it did now.

Heart racing, the corners of his muzzle turned upward into a flustered smile, mirroring Stoatpaw's own beaming expression. "I'm so sorry Stoatpaw, I…" Torrentpaw continued, trying to find the will to speak normally.

"I promise I wanted to see you, I didn't forget about you–I could never forget about you." He rambled, his gaze darting across her face. "I did something stupid, something I shouldn't have, and had to pay the consequences." Torrentpaw admitted, a wave of shame washing over his pelt.

Taking a step towards her, his gaze shone with truth. Stoatpaw was already important to him, but these recent events truly emphasized how much he truly cared about her feelings and wellbeing. "Please forgive me Stoatpaw, I promise I'll never do something like that again. I hated not being able to see you."

She had been surprised to see Torrentpaw's reaction, his face lighting up as he skidded around to see her. But his running up to her and holding her so close made her pause for a heartbeat. Her clan weren't affectionate cats, a friendly head bump or curling of a tail at most. But Torrent's chin wound about her shoulders and tucked her close in a way she had never been held before, and she couldn't help but smile. Something whirred in her chest like snow stirred in a flurry, her breath filled with the warmth of his coat.

Torrentpaw pulled away to speak, but maybe her stunned expression made him pause as he stumbled over his words, something she had to giggle gently at, especially as his maw melded into a smile as he finally continued to speak. And, to her surprise, the first thing he breathed was an apology. She considered the dull ache in her chest as she wandered towards fourtrees, how it weighed her paws the whole way there.

The utter sorrow that had knit into her pelt the moon before, when he never showed up, the feeling of terror she had done something wrong. All that, and yet, he was apologising. Stoatpaw blinked once, and then again. Every word from Torrent's maw spilt like it had been eating him up inside, and the look in his eyes. It really had been.

The rosette stepped closer, apologising desperately. Stoatpaw usually held a terrible grudge; she still had resentment for many of her clanmates, and she had even held grudges against her own kin, though those faded in time. But Torrentpaw? She didn't have it in her heart to stay upset at him. She closed the gap between them and pressed her head beneath his chin, just the reassurance to feel him there was enough to make sure this wasn't some awful dream as she finally spoke. "Oh, Torrent, of course I forgive you." She purred, warmly.

Stoatpaw remained tucked beneath his chin for just a moment longer to reassure him in kind before pulling away so she could see him talk. "I-I will admit it had been eating me up, not seeing you, but that's why I came back here. I trusted you would come back, too." She smiled, her eyes crinkling as she continued. "And you did, you're here, and I'm just glad you're okay. I worried something had happened to you. I would have asked about you, but- Well-" Stoatpaw chuckled nervously, it was still very evident she wasn't welcomed by any Riverclan cat, so her asking the well-being of one of their apprentices only felt like a recipe for being interrogated, or worse.

It was impossible now for her to feel that dread she had walked all the way there with; instead, it felt like her paws were lighter than they had been in moons. Even the weight in her chest, the dread, had disappeared in a heartbeat now that he was here. Though something he said caught her attention. "What do you mean, that you 'did something stupid?' What could you have done to earn you being grounded for that long?" She cocked her head, curiously. Torrent seemed a little brash some days, but not enough to try and do something dumb that'd get him in trouble, right?

Torrentpaw blinked in surprise, his breath seeming to catch in his throat as Stoatpaw returned his affection. His fur rose once again as butterflies continued to swirl in his stomach, but as a few heartbeats passed, he purred, closing his eyes tight as he held her into his chest. His nerves had finally settled, his fur lying flat and his heartbeat slowing as she spoke, offering him her forgiveness.

Holding her closer for a moment before she drew away, Torrentpaw opened his eyes. Stoatpaw's forgiveness wasn't something he took lightly, making a silent promise to himself that he would never take it for granted.

He exhaled softly at her question, settling onto his haunches. He didn't want to have to admit his mistake and lay out his stupidity, but Stoatpaw deserved an explanation.

"When Pikestar lost a life at the gathering," Torrentpaw began, eyes darting across his paws before meeting Stoatpaw's. "I was so angry at Adderfang for what he had done, I wanted to understand why or how he could do something that goes against everything we had built." He continued, voice growing thick with emotion that was obvious by the look in his eyes. "I followed his scent. I thought that maybe if I could understand, I could make it right and fix what had been done. I tracked him all the way to the shipyard, and by the time I had left to travel back home, I realized my decision had fixed nothing. I left my clan in a time of urgency for my own selfish want for closure." His last sentence made his mouth feel gross as it left his tongue, the suddenly familiar sense of shame creeping back into his heart.

Sighing, he went on. "When I got back, my mentor wasn't happy. I was confined to camp for a couple of days, which is why I couldn't come see you." Torrentpaw's tail twitched, and he silently wondered if he should have come anyway. After all, it wasn't Stoatpaw who should have been punished for his actions and left alone at Fourtrees. Quickly pushing the thought away and forcing the fur flat along his neck that threatened to spike, he exhaled. What's done has been done.

"And…" Torrentpaw hesitated, as if his story couldn't have gotten any more embarrassing. "My warrior ceremony has been held back for a moon." He meowed, working his claws into the dirt.

As foolish as his actions were, Torrentpaw couldn't help but feel a weight off his shoulders as he explained himself to Stoatpaw. Talking to her came so easily to the young tom, he felt as if he could tell her anything. Unworking his claws from the forest floor, his eyes searched Stoatpaw's blue gaze as he awaited her response.

The ivory molly sat and watched Torrentpaw's explanation, genuinely rather surprised at what had happened. She knew Pikestar had been killed by one of his own warriors, but clearly, Torrentpaw knew him well enough to seek him out, even for a dangerous tom who had been exiled. She let out a puff of air with a hum, thinking for a moment before speaking. "Okay... Maybe that was a little dumb..." She admitted, clicking her tongue, before realising how quickly she said that and backpedalling. "But! I can see why you did it." She tacked on quickly, sighing at her own expense this time.

"Clearly you trusted Adderfang; it's awful what he did, and you and your clan deserved answers after what he did." It wasn't like she couldn't imagine some of her clanmates doing the same. Shadowclan was rife with tension on its worst days, but such a brazen attack before so many cats still felt surreal. "But it's the job of the council to seek that, if Pikestar wanted closure. You really could have gotten hurt, Torrent. Not even by Adderfang, wandering out into loner territory alone could have gotten you attacked- O-or worse...." Stoatpaw clenched her jaw, heart sinking a little. Pikestar at least had the benefit of multiple lives, but Torrentpaw?...

She shook her head, trying not to think too much about it. The idea itself made her feel nauseous, and it was the last thing she wanted. "I'm just glad you're okay." She pressed her forehead against him again, one last reassurance he was really there, really okay. Stoatpaw steadied her breath again as she sat up. "Glad you didn't get grounded until your warrior ceremony like I am--or, meant to be." Stoatpaw chuckled sheepishly, ears burning a little, admitting it. "I'd dread to think what Sablestar would do if he learned I'd been sneaking out of Shadowclan...." She visibly cringed, wrapping her tail around herself. Stoatpaw wasn't scared of her mentor, for the most part.

Stoatpaw's shoulders did droop slightly as her face fell a little. "That means you won't be a warrior until... Two moons after I am? That kinda sucks..." She sat settled back on her haunches, tilting her head slightly as she gazed at Torrentpaw, smiling a little as she did. "We'll just have to celebrate even more when you do! I'm excited to hear what your warrior name's gonna end up as." Her whole face crinkled with her widening smile, while there was some dread to what her name would be someday soon, she hoped Torrent would be happy with whatever he was given.

Torrentpaw's eyes flashed with amusement as Stoatpaw quickly redirected her words, because she wasn't wrong, what he did was dumb, and not just a little bit.

At the mention of the possibility of getting hurt, he sighed, shuffling his paws against the dirt as he looked away momentarily. Seeing how much Stoatpaw cared about his well-being sent a wave of guilt washing over his pelt. "I know, you aren't wrong about it being a dumb decision." He replied, glancing around the clearing before returning his gaze to Stoatpaw as she continued.

"I'm just glad you're okay."

He tensed as Stoatpaw pressed her head against his shoulder in emphasis of her words, and before he could blink, the butterflies returned. "I'm okay." He murmured warmly, touching his nose to her forehead with a purr.

Torrentpaw continued to listen as she pulled away, and her smile from ear to ear as she finished felt contagious, causing Torrentpaw to smile in return.

"I'm excited to hear yours too," He began, eyes flashing with admiration as he continued to mirror her smile. "I can't wait to see you after your ceremony." Torrentpaw meowed, his voice filled with sincerity. He didn't seem to care how far into the future that would be, not seeing Stoatpaw didn't even seem like an option.

Settling down onto his side, Torrentpaw rested his body against the earth, stretching his forelegs out in front of him.

"How have things been in Shadowclan?" Torrentpaw asked, flicking his ear towards the empty spot next to him for Stoatpaw to settle down too, if she wanted. The last thing Stoatpaw had told him was that it felt like she had been walking on eggshells, and it hadn't been easy to leave. "Have you been safe?" He pressed, voice growing with concern. The tension between their clans was still relevant, especially after the recent gathering.

Her smile couldn't falter at that rate; there was a warmth and comfort that Torrentpaw brought her. Earlier that night, she had been so filled with dread, but she couldn't bring herself to even entertain the fear. She had come here because she trusted Torrent, and she was right to. He made some brash decisions, but beneath it all, he was truly a good cat, a kind cat, her very dearest friend. How strange she found it, someone she found herself so fond of, hailing from a clan that she feared. It was a shame, really; it would make their meetings easier, but the thrill of sneaking out to find him was the quiet rebellion she needed so her spirit would not break.

Though a warm chuckle parted her maw as Torrentpaw flopped over and stretched. Stoatpaw's eyes crinkled in a warm smile as a purr rolled from her throat. If he thought it was safe to relax, she trusted him implicitly. The ivory molly delicately settled at his side, tucking her paws beneath her ruff as she curled her tail about her side, looking back up to the bengal with a smile.

But her smile did manage to falter, Torrent's question taking her aback a little. She breathed, as if to reassure him, but words died on her tongue as her ears drooped slightly. Her mouth grew dry as she struggled to formulate her words. "It's been. Fine. I suppose?" The ivory molly crossed her paws, shrinking into herself slightly. "Sablestar's been harsher on me to ensure I stay caught up, especially after I ended up sparring with Snakepaw after our argument at the gathering." Shame burned her ears; she wasn't proud of blowing up like that, and even more so for having lost the fight. Stoatpaw shook her head, giving Torrent a watery smile. "It's fine, really, I just need to be careful what I do. No more fights, no more arguments."

Stoatpaw sighed, resting her head on her paws, though she had to chuckle at a realisation. "Hm, we both make some sorta stupid decisions, don't we?" Her ear flicked, she couldn't be harsh on Torrent even if she wanted to, she snuck around behind Sablestar's back, argued and disagreed with him. Repeatedly even. "If either of us is going to have a fighting chance at graduating soon, we should probably screw our heads on. I don't always agree with Sablestar, but he's doing what's right for me, and the sooner I graduate, the sooner I'm un-grounded. I've not been allowed on border patrols without him since I was 8 moons, eight!"

The ivory molly flopped on her side with a huff. Maybe she was blowing everything out of proportion, but having gone from being coddled as a kitten by her father to being coddled by her mentor as an apprentice, it felt like she had achieved nothing in her eleven moons without every last thing being commented on or criticised.
