Hello everyone! I don't know about you, but sometimes I want to make an open thread but have no idea what to write or how to make it feel inclusive and open for anyone to jump in and join with. In the past, most of my "open" threads felt clunky, too specific, or too high-stakes which I noticed made it harder to get organic character interaction in public threads and really build natural relationships with others. I don't know how many times I may have missed an interesting dynamic due to a rushed or what I felt was a poor prompt I'd made up because someone just... didn't feel like their character could get involved in and contribute toward. So, I decided to make this thread to help anyone who may be like me and just wants some low-stakes but still engaging situations to put down and let our characters do the work.

The goal of these prompts is to be "slice of life" and easy enough where everyone can jump in! They're easy, low-stakes, and, most importantly, reuseable! I also wanted to have them feel like world-building since that's where a lot of organic relationship building and interaction happen—in the mundane, day-to-day life. I'm also included a harmless, fun "rumor mill" aspect with seeded, like, prompts to help build that realistic aspect so characters actually feel like they know these cats they live with! Of course, if you have an idea for a prompt or wanna throw up a "fill-in-the-blank" rumor idea, feel free! The goal of this is to help eachother and make the world feel alive and like a society! I'll edit and add-on to this thread overtime, so make sure to check in if you ever need ideas!

  • It's been a long day! You're in camp, ready to grab some food, and settle in to eat with everyone else. Some cats are talking about current events or the latest rumor around camp, others are just grooming each other in comfortable silence before they go to bed, and kits are either playing or winding down after they've eaten. What do you do once you pick out your favorite piece of prey?
  • Something reeks and the stench seems to be coming from the freshkill pile. You really don't want to, but what if a kit or elder eats whatever is causing that smell and gets sick?! Or, worse, it contaminates your favorite prey item you were saving for later?!?! You decide to take the time to take care of one of the least glamorous but ultimately important tasks of maintaining the camp: cleaning out the bad food.
  • The hunting patrols are taking forever to get back! You're so hungry and there's barely anything left on the prey-pile today. Luckily, you're not the only one in camp. Maybe others will lament with you?
  • UGH! The fleas today are horrendous and they're everywhere! Maybe someone should change the bedding in the dens?
  • There's a leak in a den and you're tired of it. Every time it rains, you know you're going to come back to wet moss and the smell of mildew!

  These can be used for border patrols and anything that may involve cross-clan interaction! They're more like... conversation starters between cats, things both may comment on or talk about that isn't related to their clans/groups along with just generally being prompts for opens like hunting patrols and whatnot.
  
  
  • Smells like there's been some foxes passing through here and pretty frequently, though the scents are mostly stale now. There may be a den nearby.
  • You've reached the border, and the scent marks are… not great. Rain must have washed some of them away, and others smell faint or uneven. It's not urgent, but it's definitely something that needs to be dealt with before you head back. What do you do while the patrol pauses to fix it?
  • Border patrols are usually pretty straightforward, but today feels slow. Too slow. Nothing's happening, the air is quiet, and time seems to drag as you walk the familiar line. There's gotta be something you can do to speed this up.
  • A stream you know has always ran along this way suddenly looks different. Maybe after so many moons its course has changed or maybe you're just misremembering, but something feels different.
  • Wow! There are some strong smelling plants on the other side of that border. Is it pleasant? Is it offensive? Why in the stars does that clan let them grow there?
  • Darn! You missed a pounce and now everything in your immediate area knows you're there. This is going to be a long hunting session.
  • Oh wow! You haven't seen that bird before! And it's making a strange noise! Crazy to see that right where you and your neighboring clan's border meet.

  • Young cats these days! Don't they know how it used to be, back in the good old days?! Back then, you used to play with sticks and rocks!
  • Oh! It's such a cold morning today. Your bones ache. Maybe today's a good day to just lay around and sun in camp, let all those youngsters run around.
  • You feel the urge to tell a story in camp today. You gotta pick between "Old hunting grounds", "Strange bird", "Lonely Hill", "Distant mountains", and "Fallen Warrior"... or maybe something else?(Use those quoted ideas as themes to make up a story or come up with your own!)
  • Ah! Retirement! No required hunting duty, no early or late border patrols, just you, your warm fresh nest, and your meals delivered to you... but stars are you bored.

  • You're on hunting duty today! You and a few other apprentices are charged with getting as much prey as you can for the entire day under the watchful eye of your mentor. Just don't eat any before you're done hunting and make sure you're actually hunting... or at least don't get caught if you and the others aren't.
  • Woah! There's a cool snake skin in the training grounds today. It's old, who knows how long it's been there or if it was just blown there by the wind, but it's huge!
  • Did someone just throw a mouse? Do they want a food fight?! Oh buddy... it's on!

THE RUMOR MILL

The rumor mill is a fun lil idea I had to give everyone a sort of harmless gossip. They're fill in the blanks, things characters may comment on or make-up based on observations or out of boredom, and allow you to slot literally any cat's name into the blanks. The goal of these is, as stated, to be harmless little things that make characters feel involved in the world and like the clans are a bunch of cats living next to each other rather than feeling like little bubbles of perspective. Feel free to use them as talking points or even just as natural in-character ways to share some your favorite behind the scenes but innerclan info.

Just be careful not to be too meta-gamey and always check with the players of the cats you mention to make sure they're okay with it! It's all for fun, of course :]
