{$title} TW; Implied Animal Death -- TLDR; Kit gets found in the territory!

// Please wait for @Mulberryburst and @Maplemouse !

Time. What was time? They weren't sure. How long had she been asleep? Long enough, maybe? The air was cold around her, and a strange scent filled her nose. The kitten scrunched her nose, green eyes opening and scanning the old den around her. It was dark now. Where was her mother? A whine escaped as she lifted her small body to its paws. Stretching, she takes a deep breath of the air around her. It smells. Where is Mama?

Lips move to a frown as the kitten sniffs the air. Mama was still around, but where? And that weird stench… It wouldn't leave. Slow, small pawsteps took the kit towards the entrance of the den. Its where their nose took them, the scents drifting from outside, swirling together in a soft breeze. It was still only two.. wasn't it? Eyes looked around, adjusting to the darkness, a soft glow of the moon illuminating the world. It wouldn't last long, as clouds began to cover it slowly. It was more than enough light, as the kit noticed her mother a few tail lengths away. Paws picked up, running to the figure breathing heavily on the ground. "Mama!"

A breath hitched from the figure, looking at the baby running towards her. "Sweat pea... Go back..." She muttered. The kit didn't stop, barreling into their mother's side and nuzzling her face against the parental figure. Tears formed in the kit's eyes, holding back the tears. What could have done this? A strong smell was all over her mother, one that was new to the kit but would become familiar over time. She wasn't aware that as she nuzzled her mother, the source of the smell would get all over her. "Sweetie..." A harsh breath caught the kitten off-guard, wide green eyes looking up at her mother. "It's still here... Go back... R-Run."

"B-But Mama-" A soft hiss stopped the kitten mid-speech. "Go, baby. Go find help." The kit frowned as their mother pushed them away, getting up to her paws slowly. The kit didn't want to move, she wanted her mother, she wanted to stay. The sentiment would change as a third scent hit her nose, followed by a low growl. No, no the tortoiseshell was not sticking around for that. Without thinking, their tiny body flew through the underbrush, ears pinned back and eyes welled with tears. There was no going back, she had to find help, she had to help her mama, she had to be safe.

...

It's the morning now. The kit had run deep into the forest until their paws were sore, lungs gasping for air, and eyes all out of tears. She couldn't find a safe spot to rest, only laying half way under a bush. Hunger ate at their stomach as they slept, grumbling quietly until the pain awoke the poor kit. Still tired out, they lay under the bush, whining and crying, scared, and wishing for help. Hopefully it would come... soon. And when it did, she would not fight against it.

As was the norm, Mulberryburst found himself with his sibling, moving along the lower set of branches so they could speak quietly to each other while they were along the floor of the territory, the only time words stopped to be broken by small bits of laughter or maws opening to take in scents, the duo's odd but effective way of working together managing as usual.

Their banter stops dead in it's tracks however as Mulberry doesn't see the kit but hears it from his vantage point, the fact that she's hiding within the bushes below and her small size making it harder for him to see her from the higher point up above. Ears swivel as head jolts up, words stopping dead in their tracks as he jumps down from the branches, green eyes ahead as tail whips swipes forward for his sibling to follow after him so that they could find the source - the obvious kitten in trouble - so that they could both help it.

When they stumbled upon it at last a deep frown would replace the usual smile, a soft cooing hushing noise leaving his lips as paws part the bush she lie half under, ears pinning quickly as he cast a quick glance towards Maplemouse. "Hello little one," He'd speak quietly, afraid to scare off the poor girl who needed help, who reminded him of Ptarmigankit that had stumbled into their camp sickly and in need of help only two moons prior, "Do you want to come with us? Get you nice and warm, cleaned up?" Maybe ask her questions about parents once she's less shaken up with a belly full of food and out of the elements and safe.

"-Well, if more've Shadowclan come to use about Starclan, I don't think we should turn them away. There's no reason to instigate 'em, those little fellows seemed polite enough- 'cept that little tom, he was rude." The pair were content in their endless chattering, even if Maplemouse was unable to see their brother, the other walking protectively as always in their blind spot. It was pleasant to fill the silence with a back and forth.

Now, Maplemouse isn't the most observant of cats, that's how it lost an eye, but even as their brother stopped dead in their tracks, the land-bound mink was enjoying their now monologue. "Thunderclan, now those lot on the other paw, you would think they would have more respect and sense in them for cats that claim to follow Starclan! 'tis a shame..." Their words only stopped when Mulberryburst hopped to the ground, finally rounding into the others' vision. "Oh, Mulberry, d'ya hear something?" They questioned, tilting their head to get a better look at their brother's face, something knit across his brow that made their own fur bristle a little.

That was, until Maplemouse heard it too. A kitten, a squeaky little voice in distress. The pair didn't need to exchange a single word as they both darted through the undergrowth, trying to catch the scent of the lone child. Mulberry was the one to find the kitten first, Maple's ears pricking at him, trying to soothe the thing. The warrior approached carefully, and their warm expression faltered to something sorrowful. "Oh, little sprout." Maplemouse muttered, it wasn't a question that the pair would take the heartbroken little critter back to camp for safety. "We can take you to somewhere safe, c'mon outta there."

The warrior's heart ached, so many kittens left to the elements, the little birdy who wandered to camp and that litter at fourtrees? It tore their heart apart; it was grateful the code allowed these poor souls to remain in the clan and that they had been fast enough to rescue her before anything else got to her.

Swarmswirl isn't with the duo - only by pure chance does the tortoiseshell arrive, eyebrows pinched together in confusion. Her morning walks were usually peaceful, even when she did run into other SkyClanners. Yet this time, it seems StarClan has a new pity to expose to them. Maplemouse and Mulberryburst both bend down to speak to the strange kitten, who's clearly petrified and hungry. And, at first, Swamswirl says nothing. The duo has this handled and at this point, she feels as if she's just an alibi for when they return to camp with another mouth to feed. But then the breeze shifts, and the scent on the kitten's body lifts to her.

Danger. The thick, iron scent on the kitten's fur is unmistakable, and the lighter tones of a predator flutter into her nose, too. She grimaces, almost moreso worrying what the tot could've dragged towards them. Yet instead of warning the other warriors of it, Swarmswirl assumes that they can smell it, too, and posits, "If you two can take 'em home, I'm gonna go ahead and follow their trail." May it lead to the corpse of something terrifying rather than the living frame of it.

Let me die, let me drown, lay my bones in the ground
I will still come around when the time for sleep is through
Over hill, over dale, through the valley and vale
Do not weep, do not wail, I am coming home to you

.

Teaselfeather listened quietly to the banter among the patrol, a faint frown creasing their features as their mind wandered. It drifted back to the skirmish, to the memory of their fallen brother, to the way their sister seemed to be changing before their eyes, and to their mother, the steady warmth they so often curled against. She felt like the only sane thing left in this increasingly chaotic world. Their thoughts tangled further as they wondered if the other Clans truly meant to learn the ways of the warrior code and, if they did, whether they would honor it. Would they truly listen to the rules StarClan had set, or would they twist them to their own means?

A sharp scent broke through their reverie. It was thick, heavy, and clinging to the small kit being tended by Maplemouse and Mulberryburst. But beneath the kit's tearful eyes, that scent lingered, strange, almost unsettling. Worry flickered across Teaselfeather's face as they exchanged a look with Swarmswirl. Then, with a small, determined nod, they stepped closer to the other. It was clear where Swarmswirl intended to go, and Teaselfeather would follow. They had learned their lesson well after losing their brother: no cat should ever go alone.
