Gorsepaw would take anything else other than the torture she had been put through now. She was glad she didn't have to nose through tunnels anymore for training, but would have taken any other chore than this. Their clan was new and had few elders, but the elders they did have needed help to get by everyday. The apprentice sat in their corner of camp, slowly clawing moss from the scraggly nest. It smelled bad. Her nose wrinkled at the musty scent that permeated from the old bedding.
The elder, Ravenmask, also would
shut up. He kept rambling on and on and on about random stuff she didn't care about. The barn, the way the land used to look, and whatever else seemed to pop into his old head. Gorsepaw was being nice, and gave very unenthusiastic but polite responses. She could only say "uh-huh" and "cool" for so long, though. She clawed the moss and looked up from her job with dull eyes hoping someone more interesting would walk up and save her from her fate. Roostertuft, Icepaw, Pebblepaw, or
anyone. She would even take a lecture from Dustystar right now if it meant her salvation.

And I think this was before you were brought to us... Oh yes, it was probably a season before that. The greenleaf had been plentiful, and there were so many mice. I thought we'd be eating until our bellies burst! You can't even imagine, kiddo, could hardly place a paw down without steppin' on one of 'em. Can you even imagine?"
Ravenmask was doing his leg stretches in the corner of the den while the young 'paw cleaned out the old bedding from his nest. He'd normally have insisted on doing it himself, it wasn't like he was useless, but Dustystar and Goldenroar had insisted that caring for older members of the Clan would teach apprentices the importance of community, and, well, it was nice to have fewer things to have to do.
"
And, oh, the stories I could tell ya about the old days, when Dustystar were just a wee one like yourself? Or that winter when I was a little'un, and there was so much snow that the whole colony were stuck in the barn for nearly two weeks!"
