sweat beads down on the back of her neck. pine trees stretch outwards, but their tangled limbs do not provide sufficient shade in the heart of greenleaf. this would've been better to do towards dusk, she thinks, but swallowbreeze would've hated asking her clanmates to accompany her before nighttime patrols. since the gathering, their rulers would prefer a steady grip on their borders.

the molly pokes around in spots she doesn't normally go into, hoping for something more rare she can keep dry until the cold kicks in. instead, her teeth find bark and she pulls out an everyday stick. it has many uses, but swallowbreeze considers tossing it to the nursery and telling the kits to have some fun.

"i think this heat is getting to me..." she admits, setting the stick down by her paws. "all i can find here are stupid sticks."

patrol members: @Mulberryburst @JACKDAW + anyone who doesn't have a patrol yet and wishes to subject themselves to rng (all i have are sticks. please help)

———— Little fly, thy summer's play, my thoughtless hand has brushed away. ✦

While their name had not been called for patrols, when Swallowbreeze sought Mulberry for a herb patrol, the mink took it upon themself to tag along. There was simply no harm in an extra pair of paws to carry herbs about; then again, just one extra eye wasn't all too much, but it was something.

It hummed a little tune as it padded to the side of the other warriors, chuckling warmly at Swallowbreeze's audible lamentation of yet another stick she had managed to find. "Do not stress it, Swallow!" It shot the medicine cat a warm smile that made their one good eye crinkle to match the other. "You have been busy! What with so many bodies in the medicine den, you haven't had a moment clear of mind. What with the Leaf-fall and all, it is why we are here, dear, take a little weight off those shoulders of yours."

The words rolled from their tongue, flippant sounding but with a genuine care behind every last drawn-out syllable. Just as fate would have it, their eyes were caught by the sight of a raspberry bush, lush in berries and leaves. A hearty chuckle slipped from their lips as they reached out and plucked a berry, savouring the tangy little thing. "Ripe too! Sometimes, taking a moment to slow down is all that is needed to find what is needed." It nodded, content, plucking instead some of the leaves, the more useful aspect to the medicine cat than a pleasant little snack.

But, then again, it was good for the soul to enjoy the little joys in life, a thought that rang out as Maplemouse plucked another raspberry for the road and continued ahead with their clanmates.

At long last, Tawnybeam gets to stretch his legs—he had done that plenty of time while stuck in the medicine cat den, but it had not been nearly as satisfying, nor enough to minimize his pent-up energy. A bit ironic that his first outing is all about following Swallowbreeze around... but it's the next best thing, considering he hadn't been assigned to the other patrols. It does make sense if he considers his return to his duties.

What he regrets is leaving Almondpaw behind. Truth be told, he had not counted the moons, so it is only thanks to Duskpool's comment that Tawnybeam is aware of the age discrepancy. It's an easy fix; wait until the time is right. But after the disaster that had set the pace for his time as a mentor for Teaselfeather, Tawnybeam feels just a little restless without his apprentice by his side. He will just have to make up for the lost time.

Tawnybeam fake-coughs at Maplemouse's comment.
"Yeah, I'm part of the problem."
His voice is amused as he sends a sheepish look towards Swallowbreeze. Time and time again, he wonders how that day could have turned out, had he picked a different route... he likely wouldn't have needed to fight rogues, and Hawkstar would have one more life still. But then- maybe those cats would have spelled trouble for SkyClan in other ways. He'll just have to count his losses.
"But that's why I'm here! I'll pick enough herbs to make up for all that Miss Swallowbreeze wasted on me."

Despite the confidence paining his tone, Tawnybeam doesn't know what he's doing. At all. Every leaf, grass, and petal looks the same to him. How medicine cats manage to memorize and recognize these herbs is beyond him...

He's spurred on by Maplemouse's success however, so Tawnybeam gets to work fast, pushing his nose into the ground for full effect. With all his effort pouring into his nose, he fails to account for sight—it's not surprising when he tumbles right into a bush. The way he untangles himself is akin to a flurry of crows as they ascend into the sky. Tawnybeam takes a few steps back and decides to make the best of this discovery.
"Hey, is this good for anythin'?"
The shrub's leaves remind him of a waterfall; they slot together and cascade down, acting more like a shield rather than extension.

When asked to go on the patrol with Swallowbreeze, Mulberryburst happily accepted, glad to help out the medicine cat with the best of his ability. He knew very little about the herbs that she needed, but could spot weird leaves from far away and pray to StarClan that they could be useful in some way even if they weren't something that would be useful right away or all the time. He walked amongst the others, eyes flicking around as ears remained pricked and listening to his clanmates as they spoke. "There's been a lot of stuff happening as of late, I'm sure a stick would find it's uses too." He'd muse in response, whiskers twitching in slight amusement. Though they had not yet spent a whole cycle of seasons here, Mulberryburst could tell that there would be plenty of sticks even through leafbare, but they surely would have their uses.

When Tawnybeam speaks of waste the scout can't help but shake his head in response, "Not a waste, I'm sure." He doubted their medicine cat would consider healing a clanmate a waste, there were very few instances Mulberryburst could think of that would make it so that he would see healing another a waste anyway and all of those were bordering on breaking codes - if not fully breaking them. "Though whether or not you see it that way I'm glad you're feeling well enough to be out and about now." Swallowbreeze had done a good job in healing the other, she was doing a good job in being their sole healer and voice of the ancestors whether it was something she believed or not.

Still moving forward he'd spot his odd-looking leaves, long with spiky-looking edges before paws would pick up and carefully he'd poke at them with a paw. He was sure they were something that he'd rememebred slightly from the journey here that he'd been asked to quickly swallow at the beginning though the name was lost to him now. "Are these anything?" He'd ask, head tilted slightly as he soon sat down next to his prize, tail curling carefully over his paws. If they were something he didn't know how to gather them from the earth, was it just leaves or did the roots come too? He didn't want to ruin the plant that he was tasked with gathering alongside the others.

maplemouse's breezy, sing-song like expression rings in her ears. it's always had an easygoing attitude that swallowbreeze couldn't understand, "thank you, i uhm... i appreciate the help." she responds, embarrassment prickling at the ends of her fur. she wishes it wasn't so obvious how stressed out she can become over this work because, no one asked for the clan to have one sole medicine cat— but it's nice to see that her clanmates don't hold it against her. sagesong will live, and ptarmigan's illness was just a nasty round of the flu.

she watches it stride around the territory until it comes across the blooming raspberry bushes. "raspberry leaves, i always need some of those." maplemouse had taken the amount she needed already. skyclan is still blessed in the season of greenleaf, but leaf-fall will peek it's way past the horizon soon enough. swallowbreeze has to make sure the plants have enough strength to grow back once the frost begins to thaw.

"it wasn't a waste." she agrees with mulberryburst's retort with a frown in tawnybeam's direction, he didn't need many herbs, anyways. the laceration on his body was shallow enough that he only needed a simple poultice, but she knew describing that would only be met with confused looks. swallowbreeze pokes around some more, comes up empty, and turns to see what everyone else has found again.

tawnybeam asks about a plant he'd just flattened under his body. she pads over, checking for any damages to the plant. "if you smash my plants, then you're being wasteful." she chides playfully, then turns her attention to mulberryburst. "sorrel! you both found sorrel." she responds, "it's a travel herb." thankfully, skyclan is done with journey-ing for another hundred cycles. however, these plants are good for solo trips for the half-moon meeting— she makes a mental note to tell jinglemoon about this next time they walk together.
