ROLEPLAY ETIQUETTE

Welcome to Purrgatory's ROLEPLAY ETIQUETTE GUIDE!
We're all here to have fun roleplaying, so here are a few rules to make sure we can all enjoy ourselves without stepping on any toes.

UTILIZING TAGS
When making a thread you'll notice a bar at the top listing 'prefix tags' these help to label your thread, you can select multiple as needed and we encourage the use of them for organization reasons as well as making your thread easier to find, know what its about! Below is a list of our available tags!
  • PAFP - Public after first post.
  • Open/Closed - Can be used for any thread to indicate its status.
  • Private - When you need to set something to private but there is no private thread board for it!
  • Trigger Warnings - There are two of these! TW: Sensitive Content & TW: Death, use them appropriately!
  • Clan Tags - Every clan has its own prefix tag, please use them for your profiles to label, when you have a clan visiting another, when you are posting a litter but don't want to waste thread title space on the clan its in etc...
  • Camp/Territory - These help distinguish where your thread takes place in the clan board itself!
  • Leader's Den/Medicine Cat Den - These are for the Leader & Medicine Cat Den Boards to help distinguish threads in them apart!
  • NonClan Tags - Similar to the above, these list nonclan cat groups such as Kittypets, Barn Cats, Loners/Rogues, etc...
  • The Afterlife - When using the Afterlife Board, these tags label which afterlife specifically.
  • Backwritten - These are threads who took place in the past to help establish future plots or to RP prior to an event!
  • AU - These are Alternate Universe threads, they are not canon and don't actually happen but its fun to pretend sometimes! Things like human!au or zombie apocalypse!au!
  • UNCLAIMED TERRITORY TAG LIST - these are tags specific to this board and have their own thread explaining them!

IC BEHAVIOR
  • POWERPLAYING, the act of controlling another person's character, is not allowed. Never assume another character does anything unless that player allows it or states as much in their own post!
  • In the same vein, your attacks will not 'auto-hit'. When you post in combat, allow the other user to decide if your attack lands or not, or contact them on-site or on discord to discuss how the fight will go.
  • We do not allow GODMODDING: your character is not all powerful and undefeatable. Please play them realistically with flaws and allow them to lose on occasion.
  • There will be things you, the player, know, but your character doesn't. Using this knowledge to alter the roleplay is METAGAMING and not permitted.
  • Character actions have consequences, so keep this in mind when playing more unsavory character types or causing IC trouble! This world may not be real but the characters should still be portrayed with realistical reactions and responses to things!
If there are consequences you absolutely do not want to see, consider changing some of your plans, or contacting other players involved to see if you can find a compromise that stays true to both of your characters' motivations!
Keep in mind that you should never force a player to bend their OC's characterization to fit your plans.

OOC BEHAVIOR
  • This is roleplay and you are playing a character, not yourself! Keep In-character & Out of character entirely SEPARATE. You should not use your character as a mouthpiece for your own views and feelings towards others.
  • Similarly, we ask that you do not take IC things personally: another character disliking yours is not a slight on your person, and negative reactions to your character's IC actions do not reflect poorly on you as a person!
  • As such, we ask you try to avoid SELF-INSERT, and projecting onto your characters too heavily. It can and will lead to hurt feeling and is detrimental to your mental health, especially if conflict arises in-character.
  • That said, we ask that you be considerate with your plots and make sure to COMMUNICATE with your clan leader (and the leader of any other clan involved, if applicable) if you have plans that may affect the entire clan, especially negatively! Cross-clan litters, dog attacks, treason... A leader who knows your plans is a leader who can help you make sure things get the impact they deserve!
  • While this roleplay does not have a minimum length requirement for posts, we ask you do not post one-liners or otherwise pointless filler posts. We are here to roleplay and as such your post must have substance to it and engage with the world/other characters to some degree.
  • In the same vein, remember that roleplaying is a social game! In public threads, we encourage you to ackowledge other characters in your replies, and give other players time to reply to a thread before you do so again. If you want to interact with only one or a few specific characters, consider making a private threads instead!
  • Try not to DERAIL threads without asking the original poster about it first: not everyone wants their lighthearted fishing thread to suddenly have someone bleeding out in it! On the other hand, some people welcome this surprise change of gear: again, you can't go wrong with asking first.

OFFSITE CONTENT
  • Do not take content from this site to post elsewhere without the permission of its owner. This includes taking people's writing, characters, art, etc.
  • You are more than welcome to make groups chats for plotting, family chats for your character's relations, etc. These spaces are not moderated by our staff team but we still ask you to be kind to one another even offsite and in other discords.
  • "Problematic" behavior from previous sites older than a year will not be taken into account when allowing users to join: people change and we like to encourage growth. However if issues arise and no improvement has been made we will take action to remove those who cause problems.

DARK TOPICS & SENSITIVE THEMES
Like real life our roleplay will have dark elements sprinkled in, topics that are upsetting, potentially triggering and generally depressing. We do not want to stop people from portraying these instances, but we do have rules in place regarding how to handle them.
  • Heavy subject matter must be given the respect and research it deserves.
  • Trigger Warnings are not optional when posting about subject matter that may be upsetting, you are required to use them as well as a warning indicator at the top of the post with more detail on the topic.
  • When writing from your own experiences please avoid using self-inserts as this roleplay is not a place for you to work out your personal issues via roleplay trauma dumping onto others.
  • If the subject matter is not personal to you, you must be willing to hear out and respect those who approach you on it who are more educated on the topic/have experienced these issues.
  • Nonconsensual plots or mentions, even briefly as a backstory item, are not permitted. This topic is not open to being used here on this site.
  • We highly advise against any plots relating to disorders that would require extensive therapy/medication to manage and recover from as the cats do not have access to these things and would end up becoming a walking trigger warning.
  • The purposeful act of inflicting physical harm unto oneself through their own teeth, claws, or body is prohibited. This does not include things like biting the tongue, chewing the lips or cheeks, etc but more sincere, harmful acts of self-harm are not allowed.
    • Acts of self-harm that are permitted are less direct: intentionally placing oneself into danger, self depreciating thoughts, struggles with consistent eating [disordered eating but not eating disorders, these are separate ideas] are permitted but should be appropriately tagged.
  • Please be mindful that not everyone may be interested in interacting with these themes, bringing this sort of vibe to a thread intended to be happy or otherwise lax may uproot other people's plots or make them uncomfortable. Be courteous of others and protecting their peace while conveying these ideas in character.
  • Be mindful that, at the end of the day, this is roleplay. Roleplay often overlaps with real life ideas and literary themes, but it should not cross into a territory that makes it inaccessible, harmful, or uncomfortable for others to participate in. When considering plots with themes, strongly consider if it is necessary, if it is respectful, and what your intent with your character's plot is. It should not be something included just for the sake of flavor text.

Above all else, communication is the most important thing for a healthy and enjoyable roleplaying experience. Speak up when you have concerns, be willing to listen when they are brought to you. Problems can generally be solved if you simply discuss them and talk it out with your fellow roleplayer.
