I SIP A TOAST TO NORMALCY

Magnoliapeak leads her patrol along the WindClan border where their territory juts up against the neutral grounds of the four great oaks in fourtrees. They moved on quick paws to get here, Magnoliapeak had not wanted to waste time patrolling neutral land, and as they neared the WindClan border she signaled for them to slow alongside her. The warrior pads thoughtfully, parting her jaws to take account of the scents nearby. WindClan's scent is fresh, almost indicating that there are warriors nearby. Magnoliapeak wonders if the sweeping winds carry their scents farther than they truly are. It would be a convenient strategy.

"Be mindful of the border," she mews evenly as she comes to a pause, eyes flitting between each of them. Her own apprentices know better than to ever dream of such a thing, and Gentleflame and Thunderflash are both intelligent enough to avoid doing the same. But their apprentices... Her pale yellow eyes linger on them, but she grants them no further warning. She isn't their mentor. She has double the responsibility. Magnoliapeak moves to stride along the border, a few tail-lengths gap between their bodies and the invisible line.

The dilute tortoiseshell only makes it a few paces before a flash of brown and white darts in front of her. A rabbit! She realizes with a start that it's a fair game catch, having left the adjacent territory. Though the realization comes too late. She dives and sorely misses, cursing all the while; her paws are not used to catching the agile forms of hares. The rabbit continues further from WindClan territory, and hopefully makes a wrong turn closer to her own patrol. Or they might otherwise become a spectacle for WindClan.

At last, the patrol sets out and heads towards WindClan territory. Flickerpaw can only deem Fourtrees as a nuisance today; it lengthens their way to the border, as opposed to the neighboring strips of ShadowClan and SkyClan's lands. She wonders why Owlbark had insisted on WindClan—and RiverClan, too—instead of simply patrolling within the forest itself, but she supposes it's a good idea to preserve their prey stock as much as possible. Mice and squirrels will soon hide away, but at least those that survive hungry maws will provide ThunderClan with new life after leaf-bare. It would be foolish to hunt them all down now.

Flickerpaw nods at Magnoliapeak's order, though she doesn't need to be reminded. While her Clan is not nearly as hostile towards SkyClan as towards the dwellers of the moor, she knows that the hesitant truce can be broken anytime. Such is the way of life.

She follows her mentor's gaze towards the other two apprentices of the patrol. Flickerpaw raises a brow; does Magnoliapeak expect Lavenderpaw and Hopepaw to act out?

There is no proper time to dwell on it further. She freezes when a rabbit races away ahead of them, no doubt startled by the incoming patrol of cats. Magnoliapeak is advancing on it already, but Flickerpaw decides to rush into the other direction—just in case her mentor slips or otherwise loses momentum.

Aha! Evidently, she had been right to prepare. Magnoliapeak is unable to follow the swift change of direction, and Flickerpaw can't blame her; squirrels may be fast, too, but not nearly as unpredictable as hares. In its daze, the rabbit is too slow to realize that it is only running from one cat to another. By the time it tries to skid to a halt and leap away, Flickerpaw already lunges for it, and manages to quickly snap its neck. A satisfying kill.

"Good teamwork,"
she mumbles around the rabbit in her mouth. Pleasure runs through her at her own success. One down- many more to go.

Rolled a 16. Success!

❁ Falling Doesn't Feel So Bad

indentLavenderpaw runs ahead of his mentor on light paws. This is the farthest he's gone from camp in... ever, basically. Not counting before they joined the clan, of course.

indentMagnoliapeak mentions something about borders, but Lavenderpaw is only half listening. He's heard of borders and all before, when eavesdropping on the adults, but he doesn't get what the big fuss is. Forest is Forest! Who cares who it belongs to. If some 'Windclan' cat tries to give him guff over some lines in the sand, he'll just bet them up!. Or run away, and let Gentleflame deal with it.

indentA blur of brown dashes out of the brush, taken down swiftly by Flickerpaw. "Woah! Is that a rabbit?" Lavenderpaw has never seen a live rabbit before! He's only seen dead ones brought back to camp as freshkill. "It's crazy fast." He's heard about how fast rabbits were, but hadn't believed that such large prey could be so fast. "You're really awesome, Flickerpaw."

Lavenderpaw - 6 moons - Thunderclan Apprentice

The dark red tortoiseshell rested on the edge of the tall grass, rye flittering across their vision as they watched the Thunderclan patrol with a dull curiosity. Sparrowpaw hadn't interacted with the other clans much, if at all. Much too focused on their training at the side of Sweetnose, diligent to become a good warrior to protect the cats they cared about.

It was that faintest scent that caused Sparrow to freeze; the patrol had already tracked the edge of the border, fixing scent markers and chasing stray rabbits back into the territory. He was steadying himself to spring after the rest of them, but instead he froze in his tracks. Crouched amidst the tall grass.

Though their fur bristled, the sensation of something racing past as a rabbit darted across the border, for a moment, Sparrowpaw moved as if to dart after it. Instead, they watched, curious if the cats would cross the borders or wait for the thing to run itself into a frenzy towards them. And, to their credit, the rabbit came to them instead, wandering into Fourtrees where a younger apprentice managed to skillfully snatch the thing up.

Sparrowpaw faultered for a moment before drawing from the grass with a tilt of the head. "Impressive fer folks like y'all to snatch a rabbit like that." They blinked, half hoping the rest of the patrol would come back. It wasn't as if these cats were hostile, but they wanted back-up at least while they talked. Their eyes, half-lidded, flickered between the pair of apprentices and the warrior; the scent was strange, but knowing the borders, they took a guess. "Thunderclan, right? Hope the hunt is treatin' y'all well."

Tensions were high amongst the clans, but Sparrowpaw had not borne witness to who was friend and who was foe; arguments and vitriol to cats who may be allies would serve nothing but to endanger him, so a little politeness wouldn't do any harm.
