"and this time, she won't be forgiving"
the frost had overtaken the frail grasses that still had clung to life.. no longer did dew dot them as tiny promises of a warmer afternoon. there would not be a warm day again for some time... and with that meant the promise of a slow collapse into hunger... into fear. still, they had done something good, hadn't they? shoving out into the woods to find what beasts threatened to stalk them and hunt them for nothing but sick pleasure? they did not have to fear being chased down like mice... the cost had well been worth the security that came with it. still... the ache of all that had been lost to find that crumb of safety makes the scabs along her neck hum in protesting reminder. there were always sacrifices... who would be next?

still, the spotted tabby leaves her den like it is not another moon drawn closer to a rapidly ending chapter. scaling the chilled bark of the trunk that hovers as a cover to her den, the ThunderClan leader curls her tail around her paws to help warm them against the frigidity of the early morning hours. "I hope you all slept well... we have much to do today."

as sleepy eyes blink into alertness she draws in a breath, feeling the tightness in her chest where her lungs ache against how cold it is... how lonely this perch is, hanging on the mantle like a solitary star-dusted trinket. "Gracepaw, Snapdragonpaw, Briarpaw and Webpaw, step forward." what a bounty of success, the group of them... a delicately formed bouquet, a love note to ThunderClan's future. they blossomed despite the bite of cold, they were ready and Loonstar could not help but grow warmed by pride. they were not her apprentices but they were hers... right? in the way that all of ThunderClan was hers.

"Each of you have proven yourselves more than prepared to take your next steps... and in the wake of leaf-bare, your timing could not be better. I stand here today to welcome the four of you into the fold of warriorhood. You step out of the softness of apprenticeship, gain freedom in pressing into adulthood but with it comes risk. You cannot hide anymore behind those who once taught you... in time, soon enough, you'll be responsible for training who comes next. Be smart... be careful." that was all the lecture they needed, hopefully, to approach their opening horizons with caution and not reckless excitement.

"Gracepaw... today you cast aside the title of 'paw and instead, I recognize you today for the confidence with which you carry yourself. Goldenheart offered up to you all that you needed to succeed. It is contagious... that certainty, that boldness... gift it to those around you when they lose the strength of their own will... I name you... Gracebringer... and welcome you as a true warrior of ThunderClan." normally, she would descend from her perch to give proper acknowledgement but the ache of her age reaches in her joints, in the slowness of a recovery StarClan cannot heal entirely... she will find her new warriors at the end, to touch noses with them and offer individual praises. instead, she presses on, seafoam eyes searching.

"Snapdragonpaw, you proved yourself prepared for whatever dangers may find you... facing them with courage, unflinching... a dauntless fighter even when the odds are stacked against you. For the ferociousness of your bite, I name you Snapdragontooth. You've shown yourself to be a wonderful disciple of Hazelheart, taking with you her head-strong surety... you will thrive with all you've learned under her care and you honor her today as a full warrior of ThunderClan."

"Briarpaw, while I did not bear witness to your bravery against the fox that plagued our territory, I was there to see how valiantly you fought the canine invaders that threatened many lives and more. Your claws strike true, a focus needed in the heat of battle. There is no doubt that your skills as a combatant will be a force to reckon with in coming fights... Dare to rely on those skills. Fight knowing you are ThunderClan's strength come to bear. I cast aside your old name, from today onward, you will be known as Briarfox. Carry yourself proudly into the future as a warrior of ThunderClan."

last... but certainly not least... one she'd watched with baited breath to be sure she had learned. had grown past petty bickering. and she had... "Webpaw... your determination is nothing if not a glimmer of Dewshine carried within you, just as stubborn and ready as she is no matter what new page unfolds before either of you. Your loyalty has never come to question, as quick as you are to defend ThunderClan's spirit, its reputation. You are an example of our confidence, our good-will, our pride... I name you Webfrost and eagerly await what path you carve out for yourself as a warrior of ThunderClan."

there is enough pause to offer celebration, to let them bask in their newfound identities and the accomplishment of having made it this far.

there is only one other matter left to attend to... a few small and eager souls who want to press into the next phase of life more persistently than ever. perhaps it is knowing that the adults around them grow more wary that has inspired such insistence but... Loonstar is willing to humor it... and so she beckons the kits forward with a flick of her tail. "Fawnkit, Dawnkit, Hazykit... though I would normally wait a little longer, you've both proven to be eager and ready to learn. I have it on good authority you've already taken seriously the teachings of your seniors and so... I see no point waiting. From this moment forward, you will be apprentices and bear the names Fawnpaw, Dawnpaw and Hazypaw.... Fawnpaw, your mentor will be Flickerdance. She is young but learned quickly so I expect she will teach you just as quickly... I expect there won't be any issues." already she is uncertain if she agrees with giving Flickerdance an apprentice at all... she will not hesitate to remove this generous gift the moment it appears to be taken for granted. the glance she gives the young warrior is all the warning she's willing to give. don't test this. "Dawnpaw, your mentor will be Copperstorm... he is experienced and patient and will be a strong, guiding force. Hazypaw, your mentor will be Darkbloom- she'll take good care to show you how to keep yourself safe. And before I forget- Sunpaw... I'm handing your training over to Stagwhisper... you'll need to focus now more than ever since the cold season is upon us... that goes for all of the apprentices. Do not mess around... there is a thin margin for error as things grow chillier."

celebration dampened by reality... as ever...

with a soft sigh, the chocolate she-cat climbs down from her perch to mingle with the new warriors, offering each of them the briefest brush of her nose against their foreheads before turning to her deputy. "Alright, focus up... Owlbark has patrols for you all."

He thinks of his days as good days and bad days for Loonstar. He appraises her mood and he creates his daily routine around it. Today, he remarked, was a good day. He would be able to do his business without having to fret over his leader. He can't think of a time in his life when he was orbiting so close to another cat. His whole world revolved around this she-cat he had met over 12 moons ago. So short a time, yet so much had happened that had been the biggest moments in his life. Funny.

Owlbark sat at his throne below Loonstar, briefly shooting the spotted tabby a look of approval. She didn't need it - or want it for that matter - but he wanted to keep her good day good. It would mean playing nice. He waited patiently until her meeting was concluded and gave her a polite nod as she departed. "Okay, we'll make this brief," he meowed to his crowd.

"I will be taking Blisteringfury, Flurryvale, and Stagwhisper to ShadowClan's border. We'll leave immediately after this meeting." He had not been to the border for a moment. Owlbark trusted his warriors to act on any strange business, but he couldn't leave that border unsupervised for too long. Sablestar had his tricks and Owlbark would be the first on the scene to interfere with them.

"I would like Hazelheart to examine the SkyClan border. She'll take Graybird, Snapdragontooth, and Warpath," he said. The deputy had no concerns anymore for the barbaric clan. They turned tail and ran after the most recent fight on the border, and Owlbark had not heard a peep from them since. Good. Leave it that way.

"Blizzardblaze, please take Cinderstep, Gingerflame, and Briarfox to Fourtrees to WindClan's border. I except you all to make use of the time to bring back prey." He did not want to reiterate the scarcity he felt in his gut over the changing season. Prey would be scarce and they had to do everything they could now to prevent any heartache.

His eyes found Magnoliapeak in the crowd next. "Head to RiverClan's border with Copperstorm, Grizzlypurr, and Webfrost. I trust you'll instill in our neighbors again the importance of remaining on their territory. We've nothing to share this season," he grunted. He meant the word trust. He trusted this she-cat to take control of whatever situation he found herself in.

"Finally, Rowanfeather, I give you Flickerdance, Warpath, and Gracebringer for your herb patrol. Let me know if you need more paws in the future." With that, he rose to his paws and approached Flickerdance.

"Use this patrol to show your new apprentice the territory. You're new to this. Go at Fawnpaw's speed," he urged, voice low. Flickerdance was an eager warrior, and fresh. He knew cats like her to throw their apprentices into their stride, but he wanted this warrior to find her apprentice's stride. They couldn't risk another young life lost. He gave a brief glance to Copperstorm, but felt no need to share words with the Storm Guard, he could handle his apprentice just fine.

victorykit;

Victorykit watched the meeting from the shadows, observed her siblings receive their warrior names as a sneer crossed her face. Useless Briarfox and stupid Gracebringer. She dug her claws into the cold earth. They hardly deserved to call themselves warriors. Especially Gracebringer. Briarfox at least had blood on his claws, she supposed. Neither of them had even tried to find their parents. She would never forget that.

Still, she supposed, it was only a matter of time before Loonstar made them warriors. It was the way of things. She allowed herself to fantasize for a moment about her own warrior ceremony. She knew Loonstar would give her an amazing name. She couldn't wait to stand beside her leader.

Her fantasizing was interrupted by an unexpected addition to the meeting. Loonstar called the names of Fawnkit, Hazykit, and Dawnkit. Kits her own age. To be made apprentices? Something clicked in her head, and all she could see was red. They'd proven eager to learn? What about her journeys out into territory? A scenting lesson from Owlbark himself? Hiding her scent with Flickerdance? Was she truly that much of a... nothing? First her parents, now Loonstar and Owlbark had forgotten her. Her heart ached in her chest, blood roaring in her ears. That should be her. That should be her! Swallowing hard, she turned and stormed back into the nursery. She would just have to work harder. She would show them, make them sorry for overlooking her.

When Fawnkit woke up this morning, she didn't know why Sunleap brushed her fur for longer than usual, why she looked at her as if she was letting her go. Fawnkit's mother has been doing better, her health finally improving - she has had more time to spend with her daughters. So why does it feel like Sunleap is telling them goodbye?

Fawnkit doesn't dwell on these thoughts for too long, as the meeting begins and the girl listens. She cheers for the new warriors, but most of all she cheers for her friend Webfrost. Oh how happy she feels that her friend has received her new warrior name - she hopes Webfrost will still come hang out with her, even when she isn't an apprentice anymore.

Fawnkit's grin freezes on her face, when her own name escapes Loonstar's lips. Eager? Ready? She can hear her heartbeat echo in her ears and all her dreams come true in that moment. She's done it!

Fawnpaw can't hide her excitement as she's called forward and given to her new mentor - none other than Flickerdance. The newly-named apprentice smiles and blinks at the warrior - this is exactly what she wanted! Surely that means even Loonstar sees her for who she's growing into - the best ThunderClan warrior ever.

Fawnpaw tries to look for her friend Victorykit in the crowd, but the girl is nowhere to be seen. She'll just have to find her later to share the great news! The spotted girl's heart flutters at the naming and mentor-assignment of her sisters, standing side by side with both Dawnpaw and Hazypaw. The three sisters, apprenticed early. She can hardly believe she's not dreaming.

The meeting is finished... or so she thinks. But then Fawnpaw remembers Owlbark is next to assign patrols - that includes her now too! She sits back in the crowd, her posture straight and chin raised high, as she listens to the patrol assignments - and sure enough, the deputy assigns Flickerdance, and therefore Fawnpaw herself, on an herb patrol led by Rowanfeather. The girl glances at the healer, excitement sparking in her eyes, ready to leave for her very first patrol right away.

TW: Mentions of a panic attack

Dawnpaw
status: panic
She hadn't expected anything out of the ordinary for today. They were still a moon off from being apprentices. It was just a regular meeting. So she sat near the nursery entrance hunched into herself, blandly watching. The looming shadow of her mother nearly seemed to swallow her whole. The look a like kit listened to the deep wheezing breaths Sunleap had had for as long as she could remember. Her sickness and refusal for help left a lasting mark. Of that she was sure. She's half zoned out, listening to the announcement and name changes in bored interest when her own and her sisters are called. Dawnkit lurches up from where she has been staring at the ground, startled and eyes wide. What? The point twists and looks up at her mother who sits tall behind her. Lidded blue eyes watch her with a dispassionate look. No... Dawn blinks, a sinking feeling flowing through her veins. Did you know about this?

She had wanted to be free from the confines of the camp. But not like this. Not a whole moon earlier than it was supposed to be. She jerks around to the front, her breaths rattling in her chest as she watches her sister sit with pride and happiness. She feels none of those things. She feels...scared. A panic in her bones that she isn't entirely sure what to do with. The sound of pounding pawsteps sends her stumbling back, away. Victorykit disappears into the nursery and the other is angry. They have all the emotions today, Happiness, anger, panic. The whole entire spectrum.

She doesn't want to be here any more. That is what Dawn has decided. She doesn't want to be where it feels like non-existent walls are closing in on her. Her tail fluffs, lashes, and she turns and disappears into the shadows behind the nursery. Ignoring the still, steadfast image of her mother. The one whose image she perfectly encapsulates. She doesn't want to be here anymore.

and every step i choose to take begins to set the world aflame

Sunpaw sat along the edge of the clearing, listening to the meeting, tail wrapped around her paws. She watched as her fellow apprentices were called upon, having earned their warrior names. Sunpaw was happy for them, sure, but she couldn't say she was envious. Oh, no. A warrior name, though honorable, meant more responsibility, and that was not something she wanted. An apprentice already had to worry about learning how to hunt and fight, to feed and protect the whole clan, not just herself. She was responsible for helping out in camp too, like cleaning the nests and dens, or repairing them. That wasn't even mentioning the patrols she was expected to go on. Apprentices, at least, had a warrior to help them, to rely on if they were a good mentor, but warriors had to do it all themselves, didn't they? They had to hunt, and fight, and patrol, and clean, and repair, and everything an apprentice had to do....with the added bonus of being responsible for their own apprentice. No thanks. Sunpaw was fine with being an apprentice, with a mentor. Which..apparently..she has a new one now.

Sunpaw's ears pricked up at the mention of her name. She had zoned out, but now she was being called out. A new mentor? Her eyes met with Loonstar's briefly before quickly glancing away in search of the named cat, her heartrate increasing. Did she have to go greet him? That's what we're supposed to do, right? The thought alone made her heart beat even faster, and Owlbark's patrol announcements didn't help. Oh, no. He was assigned to the patrol, does that mean she has to go too now? Her ears flatten, tail tucking tighter against her. Please forget, please forget.

He'd groomed his fur in preparation - Brambletail had said it was an important meeting for him and he had no doubts about what his mentor had meant.

Briarfox. A cunning name in honor of his prowess. It was a name he would bear with pride, a name hard fought for and earned. His sister's name too was appropriate - self-important and lofty, just as she always acted. It showed no strength or real purpose, merely lifting her ego once more.

Then the apprentices were named, and even though his pelt prickled at Flickerdance already being named a mentor, he was thankful that at least Loonstar had the sense not to gift one of these children to Flurryvale. The other warrior was more and more obnoxious about their early status - hopefully now that Briarfox had his own warrior name, the young warrior wouldn't be bothering him as much.

He looked to Blizzardblaze, dipping his head. The young warrior had a good enough head on his shoulders, and he took no issue with the others selected for their patrol.

Gracepaw padded forward, Goldenheart had been cagey as usual, but given the circumstances, he was far too afraid to hold back the molly. Her parents had just left, was it really right to put more strain on her? Though, even now, she didn't look bothered. Her chest was puffed out, looking out at her gathered clanmates in the way that a queen looks over her people. Gracebringer. It was regal, fitting. A name that demanded attention. She grinned, pushing out her chest. Briarfox was there too, but he hardly mattered. She attempted to steal his spotlight whenever she could, her face a mix of cockiness and a smug satisfaction at herself.

She had already elected to be a forager, talking about it at length with her mentor. Not because she had a particular interest in foraging, but because she felt it was the most casual of the positions in Thunderclan. Nest making? Please, these cushy foragers had it far too good, and the opportunity to join them was too good to pass up.

Even some kits were named apprentices, she almost had to start laughing hearing the names. All of which were the same age as her own younger siblings, and yet they were chosen instead of Victory, Echo, or Freckle. She smirked to herself, seeing the rage bubbling on Victorykit's face, good riddance. Though, as she glanced into the crowd, she deflated a bit. Her parents should be here, but they weren't. Still gone, warriors had looked for them, but they almost seemed to vanish into thin air. She sighed, dipping her head to Owlbark as he assigned her to a herb patrol.

I hope you're proud of me. She thought, looking to the sky like it would offer her some answer.

Stagwhisper was not the most confident of cats. His sisters had always been the go-getters of the family, especially Hazelheart. She had maintained a spot on Loonstar's council for moons, and while the tom was proud of her, he couldn't help but feel a small twinge of anxiety that he would never be as good as her. The weather was colder, and even still, new apprentices were being assigned. He watched as apprentices were named warriors, and kits named apprentices. When Sunpaw is called forward, he watches curiously. He is sure someone with heavy experience will get the molly, but he practically gawks in shock when he hears his own name escape Loonstar's maw.

He swallows hard, dipping his head as he cautiously moves towards the young molly. He doesn't know Sunpaw, and there's a small fear in him that the young cat will find him frightening. He was quite a sight for those that were unaware of his past, the deep scars over his eye from the dog that scooped him up and tossed him around like a ragdoll. He shuddered at the thought, almost afraid that his own apprentice --- this molly that was now under his charge, may be faced with something like that. He remembered how fast Urchinspine charged the dog, throwing caution to the wind to save his life. Could he do the same?

"It's n-nice to meet you Sunpaw, I-I hope we can work well t-together." Oh fish, he's totally blowing this, isn't he? He touches noses with her, feeling like his own legs may give out.

Sunpaw panics as she notices a cat approaching her. He looked intimidating, her eyes darting to the scar across his eye. Is this her new mentor? Sunpaw's ears flatten even further against her head. He looks like he's going to be strict and then she'll have to work even harder, as if it wasn't hard enough for her to keep up with the other apprentices. How much is he going to ask of her? Oh, mouse-dung. This is not good-

Her thoughts are cut short as he speaks, his slight stutter in contrast of his appearance catching her off-guard. She almost recoils as he moves to touch noses with her but manages to stay still.

"Oh, uh-" She glances away, muttering. "Right....yeah." She hesitates for a moment before looking back at him, trying to swallow her nerves.

Webpaw - no, Webfrost now - puffed out her chest with pride as her new name was called. In truth, she wasn't certain that she'd become a warrior alongside her contemporaries, after all that drama and Owlbark's very clear distaste for the way she'd handled herself those few moons back.

And Loonstar had praised her pride in ThunderClan. When it came down to it, this Clan, her home, that was what truly held her heart, despite the little voice in the back of her head that suspiciously sounded like a certain ShadowClan warrior. And when Owlbark announced patrols, she was honestly a little relieved to not have to journey back to the Clan who had caused so much trouble for her. For a moment, she thought of Cinderpaw.

Hah! I knew I'd be a warrior before him, she thought proudly.

Even if RiverClan were getting a little too close to Sunningrocks for her liking, it would be a great first patrol as a warrior. Webfrost looked over to Magnoliapeak with a fire in her eyes, dipping her head. The young warrior was ready for whatever was to come, now that she was who she was meant to be!
OOC:

You walk along the edge of danger
AND IT WILL CHANGE YOU

.

Copperstorm stood tall, pride bright in his golden eyes as Loonstar addressed the Clan. There was much to be done, much to rebuild and tend to, but for this moment the camp felt whole. When the new warriors' names rang out, he added his voice without hesitation, the sound carrying strong and steady. " Gracebringer! Snapdragontooth! Briarfox! Webfrost! " Good names. Solid names. Names that would last. Each had earned their place, each had been shaped by capable mentors. It sat well in his chest, that quiet certainty.

His gaze drifted next to the younger generation, kits and newly made apprentices tumbling and whispering, eyes alight with anticipation. This was the future, scrappy and loud and hopeful. When Loonstar named his next apprentice, so soon after his oldest stood on the cusp of warriorhood, Copperstorm felt that familiar, grounding weight settle on his shoulders. Responsibility. Trust. He welcomed it. He stepped forward, lowering his head to touch noses with Dawnpaw... Only she bolted before he came close to her...

He froze, surprise flashing across his face, a sharp crease forming between his brows. For a heartbeat he simply stared at the space she had occupied, tail giving a slow, uncertain flick. That was... Not how that usually went. Copperstorm straightened, eyes lifting as Owlbark began calling out patrols, the rhythm of Clan life rolling onward whether one was ready or not. He listened, but part of his attention lingered elsewhere, already turning the moment over in his mind.

He would find Dawnpaw later. He would talk to her. Figure out what fear or doubt had sent her running instead of stepping forward. Not every apprentice greeted their path with joy. He knew that well enough.
