He wasn't excited. That's what he would say if he was lying. Finally, a permitted adventure out of camp, and for the good of the clan, no less! The good-natured grin that that had been invisible for the days following Juniperstar's return was finally creeping back, returning to his face as he leads a patrol out of camp. This wasn't so unfamiliar, after all. On his flank were two cats- Copperstorm, he found dependable, after all. He hadn't truly been able to see these things up close for the past moon, but Copperstorm, as far as he knew from chatterings of other warriors, was also deeply emotional, but not in a bad way. The kind of cat you could actually talk to, if you were close. Loyal. Reliable. All qualities that Thunderflash enjoyed in a cat.

Rampaw, the apprentice- another one of those strange words- was... something. Actually, he reminded Thunderflash quite a bit of himself as a younger cat. Quick to snap back, but hardworking. He wonders if a warrior was going to mold him into a warrior that.. that Thunderclan could truly be proud of. His ears perked in thought as they continued to walk. "Have either of you two been out this direction yet?" Thunderflash asks aloud, eyes shifting towards the other two before back forward. The scent of the Thunderpath off to their left was making it difficult to scent anything. Well, it was at least good that he knew it was out here, right?

It wasn't long before the thick forest was giving way to what appeared to be a collection of his rocks. Snow and ice coated them, yet, there were pockets of sunlight that made him hopeful. Thunderflash makes a soft 'aha' noise, coming to a stop. "I think we should search here." He says aloud, baby blues darting this way and that. His nose lifts in the air, muzzle parting gently to scent the area and- a frown crosses his face, head turning to the left. The Thunderpath covered up much of what he was trying to smell, and a soft 'ugh' was spoken. Yet, the wind shifted just enough and- "I think I smell mouse. Anyone want a try a' i'?" He whispers to the two with him.

// the thunderpath clouds the senses of the patrol. while sniffing about for herbs, someone notices that there's a cluster of stones, smelling just faintly of mice. hunger presses the patrol forward - until a rock shifts underfoot and reveals a snake corpse. the patrol begins to wonder... is this a safe place to be?

COPPERSTORM OF THUNDERCLAN

Copperstorm's paws itched with anticipation, the prospect of being out of camp lifting his spirits. It wasn't hunting, a task he usually relished, but herb gathering was just as important. After all, if their clanmates were hurt, they needed a chance to heal. His amber eyes shifted toward the direction of the Thunderpath as the acrid scent grew stronger, and his nose wrinkled in distaste.

" Hm? No, I haven't been this far yet in... Quite some moons... " he admitted, glancing toward Thunderflash. " I've been avoiding this spot. It's so close to the Thunderpath, and the smell is awful. " He gave an exaggerated huff, flicking his tail before nodding toward the other tom. " How're your wounds treating you, anyway? " he asked, his voice softening with genuine concern as they padded along with the group.

Before long, the group found themselves near a collection of rocks, their surfaces damp and speckled with frost. Copperstorm lifted his nose, parting his jaws to draw in the scents around them. The reek of the Thunderpath lingered, sour and sharp, but beneath it, there was something else... something familiar.

Mouse.

His ears pricked, and he flicked his tail with a hum of approval, turning his gaze to Thunderflash. " Looks like it's not just herbs we're finding here. " he teased, the hint of a smirk tugging at his maw. He crouched slightly, his movements fluid as he crept forward a few pawsteps. " Might as well check if these are good hunting grounds too. " he murmured, his voice low but tinged with amusement.

Admittedly, Rampaw was a little aggravated. He was cold and with cats he didn't know particularly well. And hungry. He had never been hungry before.
He let out a loud grunt of annoyance as he desperately attempted to remove the third stick of the day that had managed to find its way into his fur. Sitting while the other two toms continued walking, he wondered why the medicine cats couldn't do this. It was impossible to scent anything with the Thunderpath, he didn't know the first thing about herbs, and every movement left him more exhausted than the last! He didn't want the other two to think him as weak, though. So despite how he wore his displeasure on his face, he wouldn't verbally complain. Not about this, at least.

He let out a huff as he pulled the stick out, strands of black fur clinging to it, and then stood up, quickly catching up to the two toms with his shaky legs.
"Yeah, I haven't been here either… can't imagine anyone has." Rampaw mumbled. "It's so cold, I bet we're the only ones out."
As they walked, he watched both cats with curiosity. He took glances at the scars that dotted their bodies, and compared to his body, which was as fresh and untouched as a newborn kit. He wondered what that meant, about their pasts and differences.

When they reached the clearing, Rampaw felt colder than before, the small amount of warmth that the clusters of trees provided now gone. The smell of the Thunderpath still overwhelmed any other scent, and when Thunderflash mentioned a mouse, Rampaw thought he was joking. He watched Copperstorm crouch, his ears pinning to his head and a clear look of are you stupid across his face. "I don't smell anything other than the Thunderpath."

Thunderflash had nodded his head in agreement at the other's statement. "Aye, it reeks ou' here. Nothin' nice 'bout tha' thing." He said, head tossing towards the Thunderpath briefly. Funny, how his name was shared with so many things. The black expanse of thing that promised nothing but fumes, monsters, and death, then their clan. Then there was the clan themselves- Thunderclan. Perhaps he was a smidge prideful to share a name with the latter, but he wasn't about to say that out loud.

"Hm? Oh." His blue eyes shifted to his flank. "Healing up nicely, though i' isn't goin t' be pretty. Shame, tha' is." A shrug followed moments later. He glanced backwards at Rampaw- it would be a lie to say he didn't know the kid wanted to be here, but they didn't really have a choice. "Aye, it's pretty damn cold. Can say tha' again." He hummed, though Thunderflash wasn't complaining about the task. Anything to get out of camp at this rate.

At the rocks themselves, he nodded to Copperstorm. "Go on then." He encouraged. Thunderflash was still technically on 'light duty', so he would stand here, scanning with his eyes. Thunderflash glanced sidelong at Rampaw, who was wearing a very... Thunderflash didn't have a word for it, but his head tilted. "Y' don't have experience ye', kiddo. But here." Thunderflash stepped closer, jerking his own head to indicate Rampaw should lower his head like Thunderflash did. "Part yer mouth jus' a bi'. Wait until the winds shift- yer eyes are gonna sting a bi' from th' Thunderpath, but if yer patient..." The wind shifted just a bit again- the scent of mouse was there again, but it was.. stale.

Thunderflash's ears perked forward, baby blues suddenly searching, rather then focusing on the apprentice beside him. "Wait!" He called to Copperstorm, who was sure to already be steps into the rocks.

COPPER OF THUNDERCLAN

Copperstorm flicked his tail, narrowing his eyes as he kept an ear on Rampaw's discomfort, a soft, knowing sigh escaping him. He could tell the apprentice wasn't exactly thrilled to be here... who would be? The Thunderpath stank, the cold was biting, and the snow only made everything more miserable. But Copperstorm had seen worse days, and he wasn't about to let Rampaw slack off now.

" Focus. " he meowed firmly, but not unkindly, a hint of warmth in his voice. " Open your maws, let the scents in. Eventually, you'll push past the stink of Thunderpath, and you'll smell it too. " His gaze flicked briefly to Thunderflash, watching the other tom's progress. The healing was going well, but Copperstorm couldn't help but feel a sense of protectiveness. He knew Thunderflash wouldn't admit it, but Copperstorm wanted to make sure he didn't push himself too hard.

He gave a small, approving nod as Thunderflash spoke up, guiding Rampaw toward the scent of the mice. It was good to see Thunderflash back on his paws, even if he was still recovering. Copperstorm was thankful for that, but he knew better than to let the tom overexert himself. Keeping a careful watch on Thunderflash, he pushed himself forward, moving toward the rocks with purpose.

The moment he lifted a rock, he froze. His heart lurched in his chest. He could feel the familiar, sinister coldness of a snake beneath his paws, its body still and coiled beneath the stone. Instantly, he hissed, his ears flattening as panic surged within him.

" Careful..! Snake! " His yowl echoed through the air, laced with alarm as his eyes widened in shock. The snake didn't move, but Copperstorm wasn't about to take any chances. Was this the only one? Or was it part of a nest? The hairs on his back bristled at the thought, his gaze darting around for any signs of more.

Rampaw watched both the toms curiously, his tail flicking slightly. He felt slightly offended by Thunderflash saying he didn't have experience. I know what I'm doing, he thought, no need to tell me what to do.
He followed Copperstorm movements, his gaze moving towards the mound of rocks. He shivered as his stomach touched the snow covered ground, the bitterness from the Thunderpath hitting his eyes. Rampaw opened his mouth, searching for the scent of the mouse.
For a few moments he sat there, following Copperstorm's orders. Only when he pushed through the bitter scent did he relax, the smell of the mouse natural and musky unlike that of the Thunderpath. He wanted to cut in front of Copperstorm, to catch the mouse for himself, to show that he was better than they thought. Rampaw didn't though, instead staying back.

The sudden sound of Thunderflash's voice breaking through the wind caused Rampaw to jump, and yowl that left Copperstorm made his eyes widen.
"Snakes?" He blinked dumbly, clearly caught of guard. He stared at the rocks, the crevasses that ripped across them becoming threatening, like he could see glowing eyes of the serpents within them. "Is it a nest? If it is we should go tell Juniperstar." He turned towards Thunderflash, his voice loud, almost demanding.
Rampaw, in all of his arrogance, wondered how Thunderflash and Copperstorm could miss the smell of snakes. He did not think about his lack of ability to scent a simple mouse.

Thunderflash's ears pinned backwards as Copperstorm shouts out what he thought he had smelled- the twisting in his stomach, the nervousness of someone getting hurt on his watch almost realized. "Pull back!" He called, the warmth in his tone gone, something sharper replacing it. Snakes? Thunderflash's eyes didn't stray away from Copperstorm, keeping a close eye on the other warrior, trying to make sure that he made it back unharmed. "Yeah, snakes. They smell like dead fur, kind of." Thunderflash responds to the apprentice, eyes darting towards him extremely briefly to make sure he wasn't trying to creep towards the pile of rocks.

"Lesson learned." He uttered to himself, then shook his fur out briefly. The cold was starting to sting at his paws. "Yeah, we should tell her. Make sure everyone knows." He says, breath curling white- eyes snagging on something green poking up from the ice and snow. He creeps around the side of the rocks with reckless abandon. Delicately does his muzzle bury, fangs snipping at the base of what appears to be a herb, red berries hanging by the corner of his mouth. Now- he knew better then to stick this in his mouth, so he was careful not to bite down on the stem, just carrying it between his gums.

He returns to the other two, hoping that Copperstorm had returned from the rocks by now. "Alrigh'. This wasn' for nothin'. Let's get back, aye?" He says, glancing between the three of them. With any kind of confirmation, Thunderflash was stepping back towards camp, hopefully hiding his shivering.

COPPER OF THUNDERCLAN

" We should tell Juni, indeed. " the tom agreed, his tail lashing in frustration as his golden eyes narrowed at the rocks. It was as if he expected the serpents to strike at any moment, though none appeared. Still, the tension lingered in his stance, distrust seeping into his view of the rocky terrain. This spot would certainly be marked as dangerous.

He turned his gaze to Thunderflash, nodding curtly before stepping closer. " I'll make sure to keep an eye on the others, ensure no one gets any bold ideas about fighting snakes. " he meowed firmly, his voice tinged with the remnants of unease. As Thunderflash moved around the rocks, he returned with their objective: herbs. Despite the peril they'd faced, they had managed to achieve their goal. " Better than nothing. " he conceded, glancing at the larger tom and flicking his tail in approval.

" Coming, Rampaw? " he called, his tone softening as he gestured for the apprentice to follow. Padding over to Thunderflash, he brushed lightly against the tom's uninjured side, his voice dropping to a murmur meant for him alone.

" Try not to overdo it with your wounds. " he said quietly, his concern evident. " Rest when we're back in camp. "

With that, he turned his attention back toward the path home, keeping a wary eye on the rocks one last time before leading the way.
