You walk along the edge of danger
AND IT WILL CHANGE YOU

.

The forest was quiet, save for the gentle rustling of leaves and the soft crunch of paws against damp earth. Copperstorm moved steadily, his gaze sweeping the undergrowth, ears pricked for signs of anything amiss. Boarpaw padded beside him, still growing into his large paws, still rough around the edges, but steady in a way that made Copperstorm proud. It was strange, in a way. Being here. Doing something so normal as patrolling borders when everything inside him felt like it was shifting.

His golden eyes flicked briefly to the sky, grey and overcast, then drifted down to the young tom beside him. Boarpaw wasn't blood, but he didn't have to be. There was something in the way he looked out for the younger kits, the quiet way he leaned into Copperstorm's presence when he thought no one noticed. Something that made Copperstorm's chest tighten with a kind of fragile hope. But that hope came with fear. It always did. He couldn't stop thinking about ShadowClan. About the black mark it left on his past... And the cat still tethered to it. Coalstrike. His father.

Now that they were caring for the kits…Three little lives depending on them... Copperstorm couldn't shake the worry that somehow, somehow, Coalstrike might find out. That he'd come sniffing around, looking to twist something innocent into something he could control. The thought made his muscles tense, claws itching to unsheathe. He couldn't let that happen. He wouldn't. Not to these kits. Not to Boarpaw.

His thoughts were interrupted by the soft sound of running water ahead, the quiet, ever-present song of the river. Copperstorm blinked, realizing where they were. RiverClan border. He slowed his pace slightly, flicking his tail to signal Boarpaw to stop. The reeds swayed gently nearby, and the scent of fish was fresh but fading. No signs of recent crossing. " We're at RiverClan's edge now. " he said quietly, gaze scanning the waterline.

" You're doing well out here. Better than some warriors I've patrolled with. " Then, after a moment, he looked out across the river again. The worry didn't leave his eyes, but his voice stayed steady.

" Just remember... borders aren't just lines. They're promises. To protect what's on this side. And to keep what shouldn't cross... out. "

————————————— The melody sings what the words can't say. ✦

The apprentice trotted alongside Copperstorm, eyes wide with the same kitten-like wonder he had vehemently refused to let go of. There was no reason to; there was so much wonder and beauty in the world he could still bear witness to. He raised his nose, sniffing the cool air, while greenleaf had begun the rain, still pouring like new leaf, though it was a welcome respite from the heat. He was already grappling with near-constant aches in his bones with his growth spurt, as Dewshine put it, everyone was confused how Boarpaw was so big. He was barely 7 moons, and he was almost the same height as the older apprentices, heavier than them, that was for sure. He did feel a little guilty about how much he had to eat, but Copperstorm reassured him there was no worry, he was a growing apprentice just... Faster than anyone else really expected.

Copperstorm looked down at them just as they were staring up at the clouds rolling by, meeting his gaze as a smile settled on his toothy maw. He was nervous to leave camp, coming to the border's edge, but he felt safe with his- With Copperstorm there. He felt... Put off by his own thoughts. He felt so very safe in Thunderclan, he cared about these cats just as much as his own kin now, but Dewshine and Copperstorm had shown them particular kindness, gentleness. The same as his mama always did back in the mill.

There was a bitter taste in his mouth just at the thought. His mama was still out there, and... So was his Papa, too, probably. He never met him, and Mama never had much to say about him, always too exhausted or trying to distract them all with something else. But every day at her side, Boar felt safe and loved even if the odds felt against them, and now? Well, it was much the same. His mama wasn't here, but Dewshine and Copperstorm doted on them all like... Like their own kittens. Maybe one day he could ask them both about it, his mama would be happy he felt safe with the two of them, rather than being scared or alone or trapped with no family, blood or not.

Though the apprentice's eyes lit up, hearing the brown tabby speak, he tilted his head a little as he listened. But his attention was grabbed by the sound of running water, and a quick sniff was enough to confirm there was a river nearby. His eyes lit up, tail flicking excitedly, realising they were approaching a river- Or, well, Riverclan. "Oh! Another clan! That'sth stho exthciting." The apprentice purred, stomping along at Copperstorm's side. Though his face beamed with a grin, eyes lighting up with Copperstorm's commendation, his tail swayed gently. "You mean it?" They grinned, barely able to contain the pride in themself for being so brave, just like a warrior already!

The tabby continued, though, and Boarpaw listened intently, nodding lightly. He stared across the water, he wasn't sure if they would stumble into any Riverclan cats today, but he was hoping they would admittedly. Boarpaw wasn't sure if they were kind or not, but meeting the other clans felt like a good idea and at worst, they might get kinda prickly, but at best, Boar could make a new friend! But his priority, of course, was to maintain what Copperstorm said, make sure the borders were protected and respected! Making friends would be like... A side quest! "Mmhm, okay! I'll make sthure to keep my eye out!" He purred, though he hadn't ceased his purring this whole time. He's much too warm and joyous a cat to do anything but purr unless something is really bad.

Copperstorm glanced down just in time to catch Boarpaw's wide-eyed wonder as the young tom tilted his head up toward the clouds, green eyes full of life. There was something about it, something achingly familiar. That spark, that openness to the world, even with all its sharp edges. He remembered when he used to look at things that way... Before it was snuffed out. Before a sharp voice demanded more from a kit, more than just being a kit... Demanded obedience. Power. Things Copperstorm was slowly letting go of...

A quiet breath escaped him, his golden gaze softening as he looked ahead. The distant hush of rushing water left a calming presence... The light that danced over the water... Part of him wanted to smile at Boarpaw's excitement, and he did, just a little. The apprentice's lisp and purring enthusiasm were like birdsong in the forest: impossible to ignore, impossible not to cherish. He walked steady beside the tom, not rushing him, letting him feel the moment. But beneath that… there was always the shadow. Coalstrike is out there.

He could still feel the burn in his chest just thinking the name. That cold stare. That voice like stone grinding on stone. And the possibility that one day, somehow, he might catch wind of the kits now tucked safely in ThunderClan's heart... He would not let that happen. Especially not to Boarpaw.

" Yeah. " Copperstorm rumbled softly, gaze flicking to the young tom with the barest smile. " I mean it. You're doing well, Boarpaw. " His voice was calm, deep, but laced with warmth. He nudged the apprentice gently with his shoulder before sitting down near the border, eyes narrowing slightly as he scanned the other side of the river. " Their territory ends there, and ours ends here. It keeps the peace. Cats that break that... " He paused, his voice dropping just a touch. " They usually come looking for a fight, or they stop caring who gets hurt. "

His golden eyes flicked briefly back to Boarpaw, something guarded behind them. But then he gave a small breath and let some of that weight fall away, just enough for the young tom to breathe easy again. " Still. " he murmured, looking out across the rippling water. " Doesn't mean we can't be respectful. Or curious. " His tail flicked lightly against Boarpaw's side. " Just make sure your paws stay dry unless I say otherwise, yeah? " His ears swiveled, always alert. " And if you do make a friend from another Clan... " he added, a dry smile tugging at the edge of his maw. " ... Don't let 'em talk you into swimming. We'll never hear the end of it back home. " he joked.
