Juniperstar descended from her spot above the clan. Owlbark, though he tried not to, cringed at the weight placed upon her leg. It was healed now, but he still felt a shudder run up his spine at her resurrection from such a simple injury. She was his reponsibility now. He had no younger siblings or children, so the spotted tabby was as close as he was to get.

He stared at the space that Juniperstar had left and gave her a cursory nod as he took his place below it. "Before you depart, I have patrol assignements." He sat on his haunches and wrapped his tail tightly around his paws. Eyes turned to him and he found that panic that flared at the beginning of his tenure fo deputy was slowly receding. These were just cats. These were his clanmates and they looked to him for guidance.

The tabby cleared his throat and began. "Thunderflash. Take your new apprentice on a guided walk of the territory. Copperstorm, Ghoststrike, Stilldream, and Houndhowl. You'll join them with your own apprentices. That way all of our fresh apprentices get an idea of the territory." Fresh feet finding their way through the world only barely promised to them. Hopefully they didn't find danger on their patrol. It was large enough that he couldn't imagine anything happening truly.

"Serpentberry, I'm giving you Boarpaw, Sandpiperpaw, and Dreampaw. They need a brief lesson in first aid if you'd be so kind." He knew she wouldn't be that kind, but these apprentices needed to grow tough to her version of tough love. He found Rowanpaw's eyes and gave her a nod as well. Her softer touch would be a good addition for when these apprentices eventually get snapped at.

"Hazelheart, Dewshine, and Graybird. Keep an eye on WindClan's border today." He thought back to his encounter with Maremane and the other Windclanners. Annoying creatures.

"Flashflood, Monstergrowl, and Maplefrost. You'll be visiting SkyClan's border. They've been quiet and I'd like to keep it that way." He had little knowledge of the twolegplace "warriors", and the less he knew the better.

And that was that. He nodded his head to those gathered and moved away with a swish of his tail. Owlbark picked up his pace to fall in line with Juniperstar. "A word?" He gestured his head to the leader's den.

He rose with the others as Juniperstar brought the meeting to an end, most turning away to shuffle off back to whatever plans they had made, while others –like Ghoststrike– made their way toward the lingering group of kits-turned-apprentices. All were cut short when owlbarks voice rang out.

"Before you depart, I have patrol assignements."

The towering, dark-furred tabby paused at Rattlepaws side, saying nothing as he turned his massive crown in the older cats direction to listen. If he was annoyed at the interruption, he hid it well, only narrowing his eyes slightly at the list of names.

Thunderflash. Copperstorm. Stilldream. Houndhowl.

And himself.

All the new mentor-apprentice pairings, together o a guided tour of the territory. It was a practical move. Efficient. And while Ghoststrike usually took whatever opportunity he could get to work alone– or as close to it– as possible, in this case he was more than happy to make an exception. His former colony hadn't had any formal training for the younger members. Kits were expected to watch and learn from anyone they could, the initiative left to the youth entirely.

It was a cruel system, and while he had more respect for the one in place here, that didn't mean he knew anything about one-on-one training with a child. Stars forbid he be expected to spar the poor scrap. Would he even trust himself to know his own strength?

He waited for the deputy to finish, then looked down at the chimera tom beside him.

"Looks like we'll have company." Ghoststrike muttered, voice low but even. "When we leave camp, you're to stay close and pay attention, understood?"

His voice was firm-- not unkind, but expecting obedience. Ghoststrike would not be responsible for an apprentice who wouldn't follow orders. He refused to have another senseless death on his shoulders. If he was going to train Rattlepaw and make them a warrior, he expected them to take it seriously.

"And fair warning-- we'll be covering a lot of ground today from the sounds of it. If you run off to check out every tree or shiny rock you see, you're gonna wear yourself out and have a shit time walking back." he explained, ever so elequently. Not to mention how sore they'd be when Ghost woke them up at the crack of dawn to join him on his morning run, and that was just the start of their day.

Dark eyes shifted back to the crowd, some of which were dispersing while others were grouping up for their patrols. He already knew exactly where his own patrol leader was-- had their position in the crowd pegged from the moment they'd gone to greet Hopepaw a few paces away-- and after a moment he allowed his dark amber gaze to shift toward them.

It would be interesting, to train with Thunderflash under this new dynamic of teachers and students. The other tom would undoubtedly be more popular than Ghoststrike when it came to the apprentices, but that was okay. He didn't need to be liked to run training drills.

she could have been a poet

It's not déjà vu that struck Sandpiperpaw as she was lumped into the herb gathering patrol, because déjà vu suggests that she believes in the feeling she'd felt. Perhaps a dream–or nightmare–she'd had in the early moons of her life sat dormant until now, or perhaps she was inventing new types of annoyance in her mind. Logically, it was the most favorable option presented. Feigning ignorance at the appearance of he plants they needed so she didn't have to do anything was something she could only dream of.

Sneaking a glance towards Ghoststrike's direction with barely disguised amusement, Sandpiperpaw thanked StarClan that she was privy to such an occasion. The large tom's presence was overwhelming, taking up half of her vision when she looked even near him. Whichever apprentice–because she didn't care to pay enough attention to know–that was assigned him as their mentor would certainly be leaving every training session with a new wound.

But, as she turned and scanned the crowd to locate Serpentberry, she knew she couldn't laugh too hard. If she said too much, she might be the one leaving today with a wounded ego.

ok the entire first paragraph is just me spitballing about a version of sandpiperpaw that existed on another site who was MC and hated every second of it LMAO. it doesnt mean anything beyond me doing basically a family guy cut away gag

or, she could have been a fool

Thunderflash had been chattering to Hopepaw about the future ahead of him, the stages that Thunderflash planned to take him through. Not all of them, though. Just the first one. He had just moved to push to his paws, urging his apprentice to get a headstart on making a nest before they would head out for the day, when Owlbark's voice called. He glanced up towards the tom, his good natured grin dropping for something more neutral. Baby blue eyes stared up at the deputy expectantly. Where Brightshine had left a glimmer on the world, Owlbark was making cruel cuts into it, leaving his mark. That wasn't necessarily a bad thing, but he expected Thunderflash to lead a patrol of ten cats total out to borders.

Well, it wouldn't be him just leading it, at least. It was most of the guards going with them- Ghoststrike included. The other masked tom was probably what he worried about most. But Thunderflash could operate under pressure, both from their border-mates and clan-mates. Besides, they were just heading for a patrol of the territory, to tell their apprentices about the landmarks. Hunting areas, training areas, the like. He grunted quietly and dipped his head. Their agreement wasn't forgotten, but he thinks maybe it was becoming... a bit much. Who knows? "Aye, I go' it!" He called, waving a paw at him.

His head turned to address the eyes that were already on him. "Let yer apprentice get a bite to eat, then we'll head ou'. You may as well eat somethin' quickly too before we go." Thunderflash says, his head nodding. When he looks back at Hopepaw, he gives him a tiny smile. "Change of plans, lad. We're headin' out soon." To say he was little disappointed was correct, but that was okay. He could adjust and forge forward.
