Milkheart wasn't surprised by Hawkstar's hesitance. In all fairness, he figured it would be hard to speak about this topic- surely Hawkstar felt betrayed by whoever exactly contributed to this scenario- the cat that was from Skyclan. Maybe she felt responsible, deep down, that she allowed such a thing to occur.
Given even this limited amount of detail, Milkheart couldn't help but frown further. His saddened expression was very different to the cool yet potentially explosive fury in his voice. "Did they not consider the kits? If they chose to leave them, they were never Warriors to begin with." Choosing to abandon one's children was simply out of the question for him. He couldn't imagine it. He didn't want to imagine it. Even so, the alternative, that all involved had perished, was just as sad. "... I don't understand, why would none of them ask for help? For guidance? No Warrior- no cat worth their fangs would allow kittens to suffer. Not like this, not for any reason." The former Skyclanner involved should have known that, at least.
Milkheart sighed, and looked to Skykit, warmth returning to his expression. It was his duty and honor to provide this for the kits of Skyclan. "She will never go another day without warmth, love and safety, this I promise you." Looking back over to Hawkstar, Milkheart tried to smile. "Since they are not here, and I cannot care for them myself, I can only... I can only really hope the same is given to the rest of them." Though, he had to think that they might be raised differently. Other leaders might openly speak the truth of their origin to them, or provide answers if they were asked. "We can't assume other clans will take the same approach, however. So, if she finds out herself, if the information finds her, what will you do?" Though it was possible Skykit might not care by then, there was always a chance the young one might feel betrayed, slighted, lied to. "It is a vastly different situation, but... I told my girls about their mother from the start, as I felt they had the right to know. I could never keep that from them. Beyond that, it is their decision as to how they feel." As for how much Milkheart missed Duchess himself? Well, that was plainly obvious, ever since the start of the great trek to reach this land. He always blamed those foul twolegs that mistreated her.
I tell you what— you better not be bringing bad vibes,
Leave your troubles behind, then I'll be alright
