——————————————— Together, we'll make our way home ✦
The remnants of the smoke overhead were enough to put a pit in Stoatpaw's stomach, especially as she edged towards the thunderpath with the scent of smoke clinging to the air. Even then, the apprentice kept her breathing steady. She was on the search for flowers, having left camp while most of the cats in the clan had fallen asleep, Sablestar seemed distracted, much more focused on the horseplace than her training for a moment. Stoatpaw didn't mind, a break wasn't a bad thing and clearly whatever was plaguing the leader's mind was important to him, so better be out of his fur.
Which was what led Stoatpaw to the edge of the territory, her hunting was rather poor still, but she could always search for helpful herbs for Cicadabuzz or flowers for her nest. With the warming of the days and the rain coming in droves, flowers were finally sprouting. Though, the well-trodden paths near camp made it harder and harder to find untouched flowers. The thunderpath didn't scare her too much, the rumbling of the monsters was unnerving, and refused to cross if she could help it, but she still made sure to be careful around it - like her father always taught.
Stoatpaw busyied herself plucking flowers from the grass, bundling them together in her mouth, She tried to futz about with some leafy plants, but in the herb patrols she'd joined Cicada in, she knew they were useless and left them alone. No need to pester the medicine cat with no good plants. Instead, a purr buzzed from her throat with a mouthful of pretty little flowers, the sweet rich scent filled her every breath.
Though, the apprentice's gaze kept flickering across the thunderpath, she'd been that side before, once. The flowers there in the greenleaf were some of her favourites, they were rich and comforting almost. She didn't know where she could find her most favourite flowers, it was something she'd been seeking as long as she could, it's why she picked every last flower she could find. Surely one of them would be what she remembered. Right? She sat there, white fur freckled with yellow pollen, a bundle of flowers held in her mouth. Stoatpaw always said she wouldn't cross the thunderpath but... Maybe she could find something nice across there.
Tentatively, she stepped closer, eyes flickering back and forth. Though the rumbling of a monster trembled her paws, she instinctively crouched down, making herself small as the reverberations grew stronger, stronger and stronger still. The massive thing, pelt shimmering a crimson red with bright, wild eyes roared past from her right. Its stench was acrid and awful, making the apprentice splutter, though her bundle of flowers made it easier to handle. She had to steady herself and her breathing. She was brave, she could run across easily and fast and grab some flowers, she'd only do it this one time. Just to prove to herself.
The apprentice waited until the earth was still, no eyes shone from either her left nor right. She gulped, that first step on the path was an awful texture. Like rock but warmed by the monsters, textured something awful against her pawpads. But she didn't hesitate, she bolted across the pathway and stood shaking but okay at the other side. She peered back, triumphant; though her paws shook, she grinned to herself. The apprentice's tail flicked as she sniffed about looking for more flowers to collect. The distinctive and sweet scent of a flower she remembered caught her eye, joy evident in her eyes as she bound toward the purple plant. With a purr, she added some lavender to her plant bundle, a lovely addition to her nest!
There hadn't been anyone living in the moors, so she was excited to see just what plants she could find in peace. Or well, that's what she thought.
