URCHINSPINE ── .✷

Now I can realize,
So many kits, so few mothers.

She was cursing the dead under her breath. Serpentberry taking in foundlings and then going off and dying, it was cruel to the kits. Loonstar had also taken it upon herself to bring in that little fourtrees kit, and now those parents had left their children without parents? It was all too much and it was making the caregiver's head spin. It was overcrowded, and it felt like she was the only one doing anything about it. Not to mention some of these kits were a handful and a half. She could at least have a moment of peace knowing her living children were much better behaved.

She could feel the ache in her aging bones from attempting to keep up with the little hellions, a deep ache that spread through her entire spine. She gritted her teeth at the feeling, looking at all the kits with their boundless energy. She wished she was younger, the kind of caregiver that could keep up with these kits. It wasn't their fault that her body was failing her after all, it was her own --- the rogues. She grimaced thinking about who her life was changed that day, her mate and one of her children taken from her in one shift motion. Her pride taken from her. Not only did she lose her better half that day, she lost some of herself.

The road to healing had been long, another molly stepping in to raise her youngest litter while she recovered. She could tell it had an impact. The way Lupinepaw, Comfreypaw, and Primrosepaw looked at her was like looking at a stranger, a stranger they were obligated to call mother.

It felt like someone ripping another hole in her throat every time they looked at her like that.

She adjusted her position again as another kit bounded over her frame, feeling the sting of her bones, the ache that radiated. Maybe she was too old for this, she muttered to herself as the kits kept playing, giggles coming from their tiny frames as small paws flew. She moved her neck to get a look at another group, and then it all went black.

The nursery erupted into scared yowls from the kits, one calling out for someone to help 'grandma urchie' to anyone that was passing by.

Seafoambelly padded back into camp, prey in her jaws, and dropped it at the fresh-kill pile without much thought. ThunderClan had been doing well with prey, which was certainly a relief. There was enough going on in the Clan besides needing to worry over a lack of food.

As if fate could hear her thoughts, she suddenly heard the calls of the Clan's kits for "Grandma Urchie" to wake up.

Her stomach dropped.

"Go fetch Rowanpaw, alright?" she told the nearest kitten before padding closer to the nursery.

It felt wrong to do so. That was her sister's domain - and Urchinspine had made it perfectly clear how welcome she would be in there. Still, if something was wrong with her sister, she needed to be there. To protect her, or help her, or... something!

With quiet and deliberate pawsteps, she crossed the threshold to see her sister sprawled on the moss, head lolled back. A pit grew in her gut, and she shifted closer, nosing at Urchinspine's cheek.

How long has it been since we've been this close? she wondered.

"Urchinspine? C'mon, Urchin, wake up..."

While Echokit was no stranger to playing around, he had essentially been forced to grow up faster than he really should have. So, it was more often than not that he was an observer to the rest of the kittens in the nursery as they bothered the caregivers near constantly with their roughhousing and games. Echokit much preferred overhearing the stories the caregivers told- even when he was directly being told any stories he felt as though he was only ever overhearing, often put to the side or forgotten, however true or false that may have actually been.

Therefore it would come as no surprise that as a veritable swarm of denmates of the nursery kept Urchinspine's attention. She didn't seem happy given her grumbles, but she just... Did it anyway. Maybe she wanted to be here, to be doing this. It was more than could be said for some, and silently Echokit respected this about Urchinspine much like how he did the rest of the Thunderclan caretakers. Even if he was, from his perspective, often overlooked, he knew honest work when he saw it- it probably wasn't easy looking after everyone here so perhaps in some subtle way, Echokit took up looking after himself to ease the burden. Echokit figured Urchinspine was tough, but even she had her limits, right?

To his shock, right he was. Echokit stood suddenly from where he was lounging and jumped over. His brow furrowed at the kits that had been playing with each other around Urchinspine with a bit of a glare as if to ask 'what the hell did you all do?', He almost said it too hadn't one of them called for help. If there was anyone that could really help if someone suddenly fell and stopped moving it was a medicine cat!

Seafoambelly popped in and spoke what Echokit was thinking- Rowanpaw would be able to help here.
"I got it."
Echokit glanced up to Seafoambelly and immediately hurried off to find Rowanpaw. Echokit spotted her as quickly as he could and once again, like the last time, spoke bluntly.
"Hey, Rowanpaw! You're needed in the nursery, Urchinspine suddenly fell and isn't waking up..."

SUNKIT

HE / HIM

THUNDERCLAN KIT
PENNED BY SATURNID

Unlike Echokit, it seemed Sunkit might never grow up. He carried himself with all the lightness of youth, bright and uncaring. It seemed second nature that the world would bend itself to his paws, that the caretakers would entertain his whims no matter how tired. It was a fun game, when they would grumble like badgers and push his smaller body away until he rolled across the ground and laughed, laughed, laughed.

His paws clambered up Urchinspine's back carelessly, some fantasy of a badger half-hanging in the air and lacing with triumphant giggles. There was no malice in it - he had simply never fathomed that something which brought him joy could be painful to her. His world was small and singular, too blinded by brightness to look to those around him. She does not stop him. He might have hesitated, if she did. Now, he does not stop laughing until she falls.

A giggle turns choking in his throat as it comes to a sudden halt. "...Grandma Urchie?" His voice comes steady now, still. She does not respond, and he comes closer. Pokes her with a paw. "C'mon, that's not - you're not supposed to just fall over, silly. Get up, um, please." Another poke. A few rapid blinks. "This isn't fun," he protests, voice dovetailing into a whiny sort of warble. She does not move, and he feels the tears threaten to rise. It is do sudden - one moment they were playing, and the next, she is crumpled on the ground. He feels something twist in his gut.

The other kits begin to wail. Someone calls for Rowanpaw, someone goes to get her. Sunkit does not move, frozen as he stares at the unmoving queen. "You can get up now," he laughs out nervously, swallowing around the shape of a sob. "This isn't fun anymore," he pleads again, more softly, and begins to back away.

URCHINSPINE ── .✷

Now I can realize,
A haze, her vision still not there as light flickered in her eyes. Was this the end? Was this Oleander finally coming back for her? She swore she could see his stark white fur, standing next to their son that looked so much like his father. She reached a paw out, she had never been sure she was ready... but in this moment seeing them here, it was almost peaceful. As her eyes fluttered open, she expected whatever came next, death --- perhaps that Starclan that others spoke of.

Instead, she was still here. The thump of her heart against the cold Earth a reminder that she was still alive, and her paw was touching the fur of her sister: Seafoambelly. Her eyes immediately adjusted, pupils narrowing in anger, seeing her sister there. She pulls her paw away like she just touched something sharp, a pointed stare towards her sister.

"What have I told you about being here?" Her voice is sharp, barbed, harsh. Her blue eyes fixated on her sister, she still felt a haze over her --- the ache of her bones, her vision threatening to blur once more, "You dirty mouse-brained killer!" She snarls, before she sees the concerned eyes of kits on her. She immediately shifts, her expression softening as she looks at the kits.

"I apologize little ones, I'm... just a bit tired." She mumbles, turning away from her sister once more. She can feel the heaviness of her being, but she doesn't need her sister's pity.

Seafoambelly felt her stomach roil at the touch of her sister's paw, even mostly unconscious, against her fur. How long had it been since they'd shared any sort of friendly touch?

How long had it been since anyone had given her an affectionate touch?

However, when Urchinspine opened her eyes, the Ranger shrank back as if burned. The venom in her sister's eyes couldn't be faced, and she turned her eyes away.

Killer.

Victorykit watched the scene unfolding in front of her with wide, watchful eyes. She'd been trying to explain a very elaborate game of Border Patrol Attacked By Rouges to some of the younger kits, but they weren't paying attention. They didn't seem to understand that some games also doubled as training sessions - it was like they didn't even care about being good warriors! Sunkit in particular had abandoned her instruction in favor of clambering all over Urchinspine. The poor, old caretaker had collapsed, prompting the entrance of Seafoambelly and the exit of her annoying brother.

Victorykit lowered herself into her nest and watched. She watched Sunkit beg for Urchinspine to get up, watched Seafoambelly try to nudge her awake, watched Urchinespine suddenly come to and snap at her sister. Killer? Victorykit thought, ears perking up. Who had Seafoambelly killed? And why was Urchinspine so upset about it? She'd never known the old caretaker to be especially kind or loving, but she'd never seen her so angry, either. Seafoambelly recoiled as if Urchinspine had bitten her. This was much more interesting than Border Patrol Attacked By Rogues.

Climbing from her nest, Victorykit padded over to Seafoambelly's side and peered up at the Ranger.
"She's okay now, right?"
She mewed, doing her best impression of sweet and innocent.

URCHINSPINE ── .✷

Now I can realize,
She scoffed, rising to her paws on shaking legs. It was clear there was still something up with the molly, the ache in her being clear and painful as she visibly winced. Her blue eyes looked away from her sister, "As you can see, I'm fine. Unlike Wavepaw." It was pure, unbridled venom. She almost spat their sister's name out, knowing that because of Seafoam, their sister had never gotten a chance at life. No chance to be a warrior, no chance to be a mentor, no chance to find love. Her fur bristled again, turning to her sister.

"I told you, I'm fine. So why don't you go do what you're best at and run away?" It was cold. Outside of her kits, Seafoambelly was her only family, not that she would acknowledge that. Her sister was a killer, one who got away with it and got sympathy from the clan. It was disgusting, and part of the reason Urchin was so happy she wasn't a warrior herself. She didn't know if she could resist giving her sister exactly what she deserved.

She focused her attention on the kits, specifically Sunkit and Victorykit who were now present close to her. "I'm fine, little ones. I just need a rest." Her expression was softer, her voice more sugared. She felt bad for Victorykit in particular, knowing that the molly's parents had recent jumped up and fled the nest. It would've been much more traumatic if she were to just drop dead right there.

Her heart clenched, and she wanted to stand her ground. To rail against Urchinspine's cruelty, to shout that she didn't know what more her sister wanted from her. The Ranger was still serving her penance, but she still cared for her sister. Her aching heart couldn't stop that.

But there were kits around, and Seafoambelly didn't want to do this here, in front of those who cared so much about her sister. The ones who relied on her.

"I'm sorry, Urchinspine," she mewed softly. "I really didn't mean... I won't do it again." Her gaze didn't settle on any of the kits, not even Victorykit, who had addressed her directly.

"I'll be going," she murmured, more to herself than anyone else. Without another word, the Ranger left the nursery, dragging her tail in the dirt behind her.

URCHINSPINE ── .✷

Now I can realize,
She watched her sister leave with a cold bitterness, her eyes watching as the molly's tail dragged in the dirt behind her pitifully. She knew better than to come in Urchin's home territory, probably why the molly never had kits of her own. Not that she would be a good mother, given her track record. Urchin felt her brow furrow, thinking again about Wavepaw, about the warrior her sister could have been.

Behind her mask of anger, there was one of pity. Outside of her children, Seafoam was the only family she had. Her anger was entirely at how Wavepaw met her end, and she almost wished things could be different --- that the two could have had something. Even Oleander had urged her to forgive her sister, so why did she feel such anger every time Seafoam was in her line of sight? Why couldn't she bring herself to just... talk to her sister? To discuss her anger and bitterness, discuss how she had felt since Oleander and Tulip were taken from her? Perhaps it was pride, vanity, or a combination of the two. The molly had been mad at her sister for so long, it felt like they had missed too much of each other to truly have a relationship to repair. She sighed deeply, pushing the feeling that Seafoam deserved better as far down as she could get it.

"Why don't we go outside for a bit? Grandma Urchie could use some sunlight on these old bones." She chuckled, a warmth in the way she spoke to cats and apprentices that was never there with anyone else.

Victorykit blinked as the two continued to go back and forth, seeming to trade blows without even raising their paws. Urchinspine won whatever war they were waging, and Victorykit had to admit she was impressed. There was also a tiny part of her that had to admit she was glad Urchinspine was okay. While she didn't consider herself close to the old caretaker, she was one of the stable points in her life thus far. That had to mean something.

Watching Seafoambelly finally give in and turn to leave, Victorykit frowned at the way her tail dragged behind her. She didn't understand what was going on between the older cats, but whatever defeat Seafoambelly had just been dealt had not been accepted with grace. It annoyed Victorykit. Was Seafoambelly weak? She didn't think so, so why was she acting so pathetic? She would never leave a battle she'd lost with her head hanging like that - not that she ever intended to lose a battle. Her name was Victory after all.

Urchinspine turned her attention back to her and Sunkit, her voice turning sweet and kind, as if they hadn't just witnessed what they had. Victorykit wondered how she'd never seen this side of her before. She smiled up at her, purring and nodding.
"Yes, that will help!"
She chirped confidently, pressing her cheek to Urchinspine's shoulder. She wasn't sure if the warmth in her chest came from admiration, or a genuine affection, but either way... It felt nice to feel positively towards someone who seemed to care about her.

After his attempt at getting Rowanpaw's attention, Echokit immediately whirled around and hurried back towards the nursery. He heard some sort of argument as he got closer- one of the voices he could register was Urchinspine, to his surprise.
"Huh?"
Echokit wasn't sure how to feel- he was glad that she could bounce back from suddenly fainting but the fact still remained that she had suddenly fainted. Shaking his head, Echokit moved forward, having barely registered Seafoambelly had left the nursery in his moment of confusion. Did something happen between the two old cats? Sure, Echokit practically knew nothing about Seafoambelly and Urchinspine's history but he wasn't stupid.

Approaching with curiosity and concern, Echokit looked up at Urchinspine, as if to examine her himself.
"I went to get Rowanpaw, but she might be busy... Uh. Wwwhat exactly happened?"
He asked, about as delicately as he could, which wasn't all that much.
"Uh- When you fell. Not the other thing."
He added, haphazardly just to make sure he didn't sound like he was asking about the lore between Urchinspine and her sister.
"We'll walk with you, right Vic?"
Echokit looked over to his own sister, practically praying to Starclan in his head that she would want to do something nice for once without the concept of competition involved.
"Anyone else want to come?"

Urchin visibly tensed up at the young tom's question, before a quiet sigh of relief washed over her. She groaned quietly, an ache in her bones as she looked at Victorykit and Echokit --- so innocent, and their parents had failed them time and time again. "I think old Urchin just needs to get more sleep at night, nothing to worry about." She forced a smile, not wanting the two kits to worry about her. She sighed, "It's the fun of getting old, little ones." She started to pad outside, a bit relieved that Echokit seemed so willing to follow her and get his sibling to join them. Her space felt almost tainted, the lingering feeling of Seafoambelly coming into a space that was supposed to be hers fresh in her mind. The stench of a murderer's pelt too fresh in the air, she needed to leave.

She walked slowly, Victorykit and Echokit following behind her. She glanced at them, pity flowing through her. She laid down slowly, huffing with effort. "How are you two... doing?" She murmured, not wanting to press but knowing that these two had been fully under her wing after their parents had "disappeared". She had been around long enough, she remembered their first, Snowcap. The cruelty they put on him, and then one day much like them, he just disappeared. But it was not her business to drag these kits parents through the mud.

Victorykit bristled for a moment at the thought of tagging along anywhere with Echokit, but in that moment, she held her tongue. This wasn't about him, it was about Urchinspine, one of the only constants in her young life. Echokit also had the audacity to ask what had happened, which she appreciated. She wanted to know, but hadn't wanted to pry, given the tension in the nursery. The fun of getting old, she said. Victorykit had never considered that she would ever get old. In her mind, she was already the oldest she'd ever be. She imagined her kitten paws growing, her limbs stretching, muscle replacing kittenfluff. It was a strange thought, but not an unwelcome one.

She followed, matching the pace Urchinspine set. Then, the old caregiver asked how they were doing. An involuntary frown spread across her face.
"Fine,"
she mewed quickly. She shot a glare towards her brother. She knew he'd have something annoying to say about how they were better off now that their parents were gone. That is was the best thing that had ever happened to him. Whatever. She had to admit, she'd begun to seriously consider the possibility that her parents had intentionally left, but she still refused to accept it fully. It didn't matter, either way. No matter what, she was going to work hard. She was going to become the best warrior she could possibly be. She didn't need her parents to see how well she'd do. In fact, she relished the thought of them returning some day, maybe when she was leader. And they'd be so impressed, they'd beg her forgiveness. But she wouldn't give it, because she didn't have to.
"We're just fine,"
she mewed again, her frown replaced by a small smile.
"If something happened to them, its their fault for not being strong enough. And if they left, then... Good riddance."
She heard the words coming from her mouth and almost immediately wanted to take them back, to wrap her claws around them and shove them back into her head. It was all wrong. Being relieved that they were gone was wrong, being sad that they were gone was wrong. She paused, digging her claws into the ground in an effort to fight back the tears that pricked the corners of her eyes.

Nothing to worry about? Echokit pouted a little. It was plenty to worry about in his opinion. Suddenly fainting sounded scary, first of all- imagine if it happened somewhere unsafe rather than in camp! That smile from Urchinspine didn't feel right either. Echokit chose not to comment on it, and looked away. The least he could do was make sure this was just a one off sort of thing.
"Can you.. Uh, at least tell Rowanpaw what happened?"

When asked how he was doing, Echokit blinked a few times, confused.
"I'm fine-"
He stopped himself just short of commenting that he wasn't the one that had fainted out of nowhere.
"My face just looks like this."
Wait. A joke? Coming from Echokit of all cats?! Did he not understand the subtext of why Urchinspine was asking, or did he avoid it on purpose?

It sounded like it was the former, as when Victorykit gave him that sour look, he sighed. It wasn't his fault that she decided to bring it up, he could have gone the rest of his life not talking about their parents. In fact, he would have preferred it. Seeing Victorykit try her best to just hold herself together caused Echokit's fur to bristle slightly. He hated what his parents did to him and to his siblings- to all of them. Still, he had no idea what to do about Victorykit's feelings on the subject, maybe Frecklekit knew what to say, but he hardly ever said anything. However, what she said, it held weight. Echokit's features and expression softened for once.
"Hey. They can't hurt us anymore, okay?"
