{$title} Two days following the Riverclan heist, Stoatpaw wonders out to Fourtrees to collect flowers and stumbles into an unfamiliar face.
——————————————— Together, we'll make our way home ✦

Stoatpaw had found herself padding the Fourtrees again, always glancing back to the opening she had led her patrol to a moon back and where Cicadabuzz had led them all two days ago. A bitter taste ended up in the back of her throat, coating her mouth in something foul. Like she would be reprimanded for just looking in that direction.

Maybe it was foolish or reckless to be here; she saw the vitriol in the eyes of those warriors. She had to blink hard, trying to soothe the nausea and fear that still clung to her chest like a sickness, threatening to spill if she considered it too long. Her fur bristled; she hadn't led the cats there with any ill intent. They had been looking for moss; it was meant to be simple, how was she meant to know there was another clan, let alone that they seemed so defensive? Stoatpaw had no chance to know.

The rest of her patrol pushing the Riverclan cats' buttons was no help; she had tried, seemingly in vain, to try and redirect that. It was misplaced; there was no need to antagonise, she just considered the proximity to the river would mean richer and better moss. How was she meant to know this would all spiral? She blinked harder this time, something sharp threatening to leak from her eyes, something caught in her throat this time.

She tried to busy herself, just beneath the grand tree was light, pink flowers; bright-eye. Familiar, a rich comforting scent like the pocosin, like home. The ivory apprentice tenderly plucked the florets and tucked them in her fur. Swallowing hard, she had an idea, a plan even, it would take time, but she hoped it might be enough. She would be risking her pelt, but-

The apprentice's fur stood on end as a scent whisked past her on a warm breeze. For a moment, she just hoped it was due to being downwind to Riverclan itself, but her bright eyes widened in terror as she looked up. Her gaze locked onto a figure, a cat, smelling strongly and distinctly like Riverclan...

Immediately, she began to back up, trying desperately to steel the tears pricking at her eyes. "I-I'm sorry, I didn't mean to get in your way again. I'll go, I promise I- Her terror at being beheld by a Riverclan cat again, so soon, struck an ice-cold fear down her spine. She was useless in a fight; if this cat decided to carry out the promise of those warriors from before, she was doomed. She stared at the other cat, not registering he was scarcely larger than her, heart thundering as if he was preparing to send her to... Wherever cats end up following their demise.

Splashing briefly in the water before his paws met the stepping stones, Torrentpaw's gaze was locked onto a squirrel as it streamed ahead of him. He had never ventured past the river in this direction, but he was only a few whisker-lengths away from sinking his claws into the furry creature. As soon as he caught it, he would head back the way he came, and back to his patrol.

As he quickly reached the other side of the river, he began gaining on the squirrel, but before he could make an attempt to grasp it, it veered sharply, almost as if it had been startled. Torrentpaw skidded to a halt, gritting his teeth in frustration as he watched the creature scurry up a tree and disappear, causing one of its branches to sway from the weight. For a moment, he considered attempting to climb up after it.

Could I? Torrentpaw asked himself, staring up at the tree with piqued interest.

Snap!

The sudden break of a twig tore him from his thoughts, head swinging towards the direction of the noise. The tom blinked, surprise brightening in his gaze at the sight. A cat, who looked about the same age as himself, had held his gaze–though hers shone with fear. All interest in the squirrel gone, Torrentpaw took a second to take in the scents of his surroundings. It didn't seem like he was in any cat's territory, as the scent was mutual, but the smell of the apprentice before him was that of pine needles.

His heart seemed to leap in his chest–could this be a Shadowclan cat? It hadn't been long since a patrol of Shadowclan warriors trespassed onto their territory, with the intention to steal. Torrentpaw gave the stranger a look over, taking note of the plants that had hung from her fur before meeting her eyes once again. Her gaze was intense, pretty. They didn't hold a malicious intent like a few of his clanmates had described those of Shadowclan's.

""I-I'm sorry, I didn't mean to get in your way again. I'll go, I promise I-"

"That's okay!" Torrentpaw meowed quickly, setting a light paw forward. "It's really my fault–I was chasing a squirrel over the stepping stones, and it got away from me, up that tree." He added, angling his ears in the direction of the Fourtrees. The Shadowclan apprentice had surely witnessed it, not needing his explanation.

Torrentpaw blinked, suddenly noticing the slight glistening in the corner of the stranger's eyes.

"...Are you alright?" He asked, slowly settling himself down onto his haunches, concern and curiosity lacing his tone.

Her breath shook as her eyes trained on the stranger, she looked to his expression, expecting the same anger to meet her as it had with the warriors of Riverclan. And yet.... Even as she steeled herself to fight or run, she noticed that he was wholly absent from the tom, if anything, he seemed confused. She tried to calm herself; maybe she was overthinking it. But even as he tried to gently step forward, reassurance in his speech, her fur instinctively stood on end, stepping back, still unsure if he would lunge or not.

Stoatpaw's gaze scattered around the opening, her stomach turning at the idea there were cats hiding somewhere. But she couldn't look around long, feeling her anxiety in waves, realising she had likely made another mistake coming out here, even if Fourtrees belonged to no one, she feared Riverclans' ire for just being in a near vicinity. The cat's eyes flickered to the side, for a moment she genuinely thought her assumption was true, only to watch a squirrel scurry up the massive tree.

She stood there, trying to seem stronger than she was, fur bristled and eyes alight in panic. Until the stranger's expression changed, sitting down in a far more relaxed manner than the ivory apprentice could muster. She had to blink through the tears that pricked her eyes to try and get a semblance of what he said, only to feel a little embarrassed that a Riverclan cat was asking how she was. Surely he had to have heard in some capacity about the so-called snooping apprentice who led Shadowclan to the borders before the heist.... Or maybe not...

Stoatpaw didn't know what stopped her from turning tail and running, what it seemed to be about this other apprentice that made her feel like he genuinely didn't mean harm. Though it didn't stop her from being guarded, she did allow herself a shuddered breath and, for just a moment to look away to wipe her face clean.

"S-sorry I- I guess you already know I was in the uhm..." Her expression grew sheepish, guilt knit across her face. "Heist." Her throat tightened again, face scrunching up as she tried to keep herself steady. It was an awkward conversation, to say the least. He didn't seem upset, really, barely even wary, just confused.

"I'm... I'm sorry what my clan did- what I did." Stoatpaw interrupted herself; she wasn't going to downplay her part as much as she was, and as an unwilling participant, she still wanted to make it up somehow. "I had no idea about Riverclan when we first came to the border, I promised some of your warriors we wouldn't cross the border and-"

Her composure wavered, shutting her eyes tight with the soundless threats aimed towards her directly, they would have rang out in her nightmares if instead she didn't spend restless nights seeing herself chased by the faces of those cats she would scarcely forget anytime soon. "I-I'm sorry I-" She looked up to the other cat, a wave of panic more than visible in eyes that didn't even try to steel the tears that blurred her vision. "If they see me here, with you they'll think- They'll get me I- They promised..."

Stoatpaw could barely even try and defend herself without getting upset, she hadn't gone there with ill intent, she hadn't even known what she agreed to when Cicadabuzz took them all to Fourtrees, not far from where the two were standing. She swallowed hard, trying desperately to compose herself (Some warrior she would ever be in a state like this); she wanted to run, but if she could just explain to this cat what had happened, maybe he could help whatever tension had inevitably formed as a result.

She tried to dry her face again, with much less success, eyes still bleary. But at least she felt a little less fear; instead, it was her own guilt that writhed in her chest. If the stranger pried with questions, maybe to the chagrin of her own clan, she wouldn't hesitate to tell him. Losing the trust of her clanmates in favour of trying to fix what Cicadabuzz had allowed them all to ruin with Riverclan seemed fair. She could regain her clanmates' trust in time, but tension with Riverclan could mean far worse for them...

Though she paused, her eyes were still watery and her chest still tight. Her voice wavered with a simple addition. "I-I'm Stoatpaw, by the way." She would willingly allow herself to be questioned and giving her name to make that easier seemed fair enough. Her eyes still darted about the clearing, nervous if there might be cats tailing the stranger, she would run in a heartbeat if so.

Though she chuckled dryly, realising she had completely forgone the one question he did have for her. Stoatpaw's voice was small, tired even, she hadn't slept much, and it was more than obvious the heist had had an awful effect on her, even if she was one of the only cats to come out physically uninjured. "Awful, if you couldn't tell." She picked at her paws, wincing, realising she had been neglecting filing down her claws as she spoke. "Well, guilty is a better way to put it, I suppose."

Torrentpaw watched her draw a paw across her face, his posture and facial expression relaxed as if to say 'take your time.' As she slowly began to speak, his ears swivelled forward in utmost curiosity.

"Heist."

The tom's body tensed for a moment, his gaze searching for the blue ones that struggled to meet his. He suddenly remembered the mention of a white apprentice that was brought along that night, who had run before the fighting broke out. Further memories of one of Shadowclan's warriors flashed into his head, causing his neck fur to bristle as he replayed the pained yowls of Jinglemoon, who had been victim to her claws.

But despite it all, this cat was clearly not the one behind whatever plan had conspired in Shadowclan. The remorse that laced her tongue was thick.

Forcing his neck fur flat, he shuffled closer as the cat lowered herself closer to the earth, trying to get a good ear of her muffled mews.

"If they see me here, with you they'll think- They'll get me I- They promised..."

Torrentpaw blinked, his head retaliating slightly as she looked up to face him. His heart panged against his chest–something was going on, something he didn't know. The panic-stricken look on this she-cats face made it more than obvious, that and her fearful rambling.

Torrentpaw's gaze drew to his paws, looking them over thoughtfully. What exactly was said to her that night? Was it a warrior from her own clan, or his? His tail tip flicked in thought, his jaw tight.

"I-I'm Stoatpaw, by the way."

He looked up at once, ear flicking in pleasant surprise as her nervous stammering had begun to ease, if only a little.

"I'm Torrentpaw." He replied, his tone even–calm. The last thing he wanted to do was make this Shadowclan apprentice more nervous than she already was. He slouched his shoulders a bit, lowering his head to make himself appear less… threatening.

Quickly gathering all the questions that had sprung into his head, he parted his jaws.

"Who is 'they?' Who are you afraid of finding you?" He began, head tilting slightly. "I don't think we're on any cat's territory, and it's just me and you here." Torrentpaw reassured the other apprentice. "And its not like you were stealing, coming from Riverclan territory… Right?" He quickly eyed the plants that stuck out from her fur, though he was doubtful.

Torrentpaw paused for a moment, thinking. "Can you tell me… what happened that night?" He asked, trying to pick his words carefully so as to not overwhelm her. The damage that was done onto his clanmates by Shadowclan's claws and teeth were unforgivable, but clearly not every cat agreed with what they had done. If he could get information, he could relay it to Pineheart, and even Pikestar. It could help aid in avoiding more conflict between the two clans, which seemed inevitable in happening.

The tom's, Torrentpaw, presence was reassuring in a way; he wasn't tense. Instead, she seemed to listen intently even as Stoatpaw stumbled over her words. The longer they both lingered here, the more she genuinely believed he held no ill will. Her eyes trained on him as he spoke, trying to tell what he was saying, she was glad he spoke clearly, though. The more she interacted with cats of other clans more obvious it was that the speech patterns differed. Riverclan cats didn't mumble much, thankfully, but her bleary eyes did make it more difficult.

Though it was hard to miss the worry as he questioned if she had come from Riverclan territory. Immediately, her face fell as she was quick to defend herself. "No, no no, I would never lay paw in your territory again, I was picking flowers for my nest, I wouldn't go near again, I- Not after what your warriors said to me." She shook her head, debating if she should tell him the truth of what they had warned her about, if he would get upset at his own clan for it, then it would be painfully obvious they had been talking. Though Torrentpaw seemed collected, it'd be out of her paws what she admitted, so it would be up to him what he did.

"Some of your warriors - and your leader found the patrol and recognised me from when I passed the very edge of your territory, on the side of the river closest to us now." Her tail flicked behind Torrent, back to his home. "I guess they assumed I brought my clanmates there to try and... Scope out the area? I-I just wanted better moss for my friends and family, cause it's been hard to find any in the pocosin now...." Her voice trailed off for a moment, the wet season had really begun to cause issues for the clan, the rain logging the mud worse and worse, some of the ponds flooding making good moss dislodge from trees and rocks or just unreachable unless she tried to swim through. Though her father warned against it since the muggy water might hold debris she could be tangled in.

She shook her head, trying not to lose track of what Torrent asked her. "Some of your clanmates warned us before, but it was... Frostmoth and... And someone else, it was he who said I wouldn't be spared, he told all the other cats what to do so... I guessed he was like Sablestar to you all, your leader?" Her ears pinned back, shuffling uncomfortably as the weight of the threat wouldn't lift from her shoulders, maybe to the warriors it was a thinly veiled threat, but she couldn't shake the fear that gripped her.

She had been able to bury her fear for the last few moons but it was after those awful ongoings in Shadowclan in leafbare that first made Stoatpaw so terrified of death, let alone her own, it was something she was being forced to grapple with the idea her life could be on the line for something she was brought along for.

"It's not just your clanmates I'm scared of..." The words tumbled from her mouth, an admission she hadn't vocalised at all in the last days. "I, uhm. Sablestar's really not happy, I've never seen him so upset and- And well, he's my mentor and I don't think he was warned what happened the other night." She swallowed hard, bringing her tail close around her paws, a feeble sense of safety.

"A-and he's not even looked at me, but it was meant to be one of my assessments tonight, and I'm terrified." It was an accident, but she laughed, like this was all some nightmare, like the rising blood or the brutal fight she witnessed. She couldn't even hide behind lidded eyes as flying claws and running blood, the shadowed figures in her mind replaced by her clanmates. She didn't know how the fight went, but seeing Hollowmist's gashes was enough for her to know it was brutal.

It was so much to admit, to a stranger nonetheless, but it felt better to tell a cat she barely knew than her friends or kin. She didn't feel like they would take her seriously, that she shouldn't be scared, cause a warrior doesn't fear a fight. And that she shouldn't feel guilty for stealing, cause it was to the benefit of the clan. Or that she was scared of her own mentor because, well, that was everyone's leader, and it wasn't like they could say anything against him.

It was his last question that caught her off guard, it was one thing admitting her own fears, but it was a whole other detailling what happened. For a moment, Stoatpaw had to glance around, holding her head up to sniff the air to ensure there was no one sneaking about or would catch her telling this all to Torrentpaw, River or Shadow alike. She let out a shuddered breath, bright eyes meeting gold. "I think I'd get in so much trouble telling you this so... Try not to let everyone know I told you it, okay?" She knew Torrent would tell someone, she just hoped her name would be kept out of the equation; she had no idea how much more trouble she might get into for all of this if it came out she was telling an "enemy" clan information.

"Well.. Cicadabuzz came searching for help for something we weren't told about, got a bunch of warriors, and I guess I got roped in cause it was late and I was awake already?" She shrugged, it was what she still didn't get, why she, of all cats, had been told to join. "I- Uhm. I guess it makes more sense if you know I'm deaf, and my clan didn't until we came back." Stoataw admitted, begrudgingly, it seemed it was far more important than she liked it to be, but, again, she likely wouldn't see much of Torrentpaw after this, so there weren't too many qualms.

"We walked to Fourtrees, not far from where we are now, and Cicadabuzz told us the plan, to sneak into your territory and collect three specific herbs we can't get at home." She recounted, glancing to where they had all settled, it was closer to the territory boundary, near the bushes between the neutral ground and the river.
"I think that's why the whole heist happened, but I don't know much cause I don't get told a lot of things directly and well... My clan didn't know I was deaf until my father got upset that I was brought on a stealth mission." She chuckled dryly, just at the sheer absurdity of it all. "I'm not sure why Cicadabuzz didn't ask your medicine cat. So instead we split into groups and me and Hollowmist went to collect some willow branches since I saw one the last time I was around here." She admitted, but Torrent had been told she was here for moss the last time.

"And well, I guess I must have made some noise, alerted someone or something, cause cats showed up and started threatening us, Frostmoth, a brownish tabby and the biggest cat I think I've ever seen." Stoatpaw huffed. If everything wasn't so awful, she would have liked to politely ask him some questions; a cat that big seemed surreal. "He was there when we met at the border a few moons ago, I can't remember his name, but he didn't seem happy to see me then either...." Her voice trailed off, if only for a moment, she couldn't linger on the past, trying to be strong.

"Well, Hollowmist tried to get me to leave, and I couldn't hear it tell me to. Cicadabuzz warned us to flee if a fight might start, even if it meant leaving herbs. But because Hollow and even Coalstrike came to stop the cats from getting close to me I was able to get back to camp." She motioned from the bushes near Riverclan and across the stretch of Fourtrees back to the Thunderpath. "I, uhm, didn't check the Thunderpath when I crossed. I nearly ran into a monster... But don't tell anyone that part-" She squeaked out, somehow being what she was most nervous for anyone to hear, she was coddled enough if anyone overheard she nearly got struck by a monster then she would have no freedom all over again.

Stoatpaw slumped, with a sigh, she wasn't distressed anymore, but rather frustrated. "That's all I know, really, we got back to camp and Sablestar was so upset and then so was my dad and I just wanted to fall into the mud and disappear cause everything is terrible!" She groaned, before looking to Torrentpaw and feeling sheepish, as if her clan wasn't the instigator in all this. "Look, I.. I didn't get a choice in this; we had made it to Fourtrees before I heard about the plan. I never would have if it wasn't already too late for me to leave. I'm not proud of being part of it, and honestly, I hate Cicadabuzz right now for doing something so stupid to put cats in danger and not even tell our leader."

Her tail unfurled from around her, sighing with a sudden exhaustion. "I'm sorry I sorta... Rambled I guess. But does that help at all? I wanna fix this as much as I can because it's not my fault alone, but I didn't do enough to stop this happening." The apprentice added, resolve lacing her voice. She had an idea, a plan of her own, but she didn't think it would be a good idea to tell anyone that, not yet, at least.
