AND I AM SORRY MY CONSCIENCE CALLED IN SICK AGAIN

______________________________________________________________________
OOC- Trigger warning for injuries/violence!

The rabbit hadn't gone down easy, but in the end it was Shadowclan paws that pinned and silenced it, finishing it off before it could make it back a toward the moors. It was a good first catch, a large enough prize that he wouldn't be overly disappointed if it was all they came away with. That didn't mean they weren't going to try for more, though– which was why Wolfpack was now up to his elbows in muck, clawing a deep divot into the loamy earth so that they could stash the thing beneath chunks of dirt and moss and whatever broken off brush they could find. And while the ground was cold while he worked, the day was kind– no rain, no biting wind– just the warmth of the sun and the distant lapping of the marshwater against the catails.

"You're getting better. I didn't have to pull you out of the mud a single time." he said without looking up, voice low and easy as his claws hooked on another sodden clump of earth and tossed it aside.

It was teasing, with no real bite behind it. If anything, the tone bordered on… pleased.

Wolfpack wasn't one to offer praise lightly, especially not to cat who hadn't earned it. But Marbleshine- soft, clean-furred Marbleshine- had listened. She hadn't wandered off to chase butterflies or hesitated when he gave her instructions. No, she listened. She held her position, made the right calls, and when the time had come she'd chased that long-eared chunk of lunchmeat right into Wolfpacks waiting jaws.

Just as planned.

With a grunt, he finished pulling the last piece loose and dropped the rabbit in, starting the process of pushing the loose earth and moss back into place, nose twitching at the scent of fresh-killed rabbit now hidden beneath a scatter of pine needles and damp ferns. He straightened, rolling his shoulder with a quick shake to rid his leg fur of the worst of the muck, then turned toward where she lingered nearby. "Bet Geckoflame offers half the pelts in her nest for it just to eat something without scales or slime for a change."

He didn't see the shape moving behind him. Didn't smell the scent of fox that fell upon them with mud and pine still clogging up his senses.

But Marbleshine did.

MARBLE OF SHADOWCLAN

Marbleshine was practically beaming as she watched her friend capture their prey. Her paws were caked in muck, surely. Her chest was heaving just a little from the chase, yes. But her eyes... Oh her eyes, those bright, starlit things glowed with positive joy. Pride that thrummed through her very being as she puffed herself up a bit. She had done well, she had helped. And Wolfpack, gruff and sharp-edged, he had noticed that. He always noticed her. As soft as she was... He saw a certain worth in her that made her giddy and... Her life meaningful... Like she wasn't a mistake in this clan.

When he mentioned the mud incidents, a tinkling laughter left her maw, her tail curling with delight as she gave a soft sniff. " I only needed saving the first couple of times! " she chirped back with that light voice of hers, warmth in her tone like the sun shining through the leaves of the trees. " Besides! " she continued, a mischievous glint in her eyes as she eyed Wolfpack. " I'm not the one who slipped, chasing that fro-- "

Her voice caught... A whisper of fur on the wind. A shift of movement in the brush. Her ears swiveled before she even realized what she'd sensed, and then...

Fox.

A flash of red. Teeth. Malice. Too close. Too fast. Too quiet. It was heading for him. For her friend! Her heart dropped like a stone, but her body moved, it moved like there was no tomorrow. " WOLFPACK! " she screamed, loud and cracking with panic, lunging from where she stood. She was soft-hearted, sweet-tongued, a giver of wildflowers and woven trinkets, she was laughed at and sometimes not taken quite serious. But none of that mattered now. Not when something so cruel had set its eyes on him. Not when someone she loved was in danger.

She slammed into the fox with the full weight of her body, small frame fueled by pure desperation. Her claws raked across its snout, her teeth searching for flesh, for anything. She snarled, a sound so unlike her usual chirps and purrs it almost didn't sound like her at all.

When she heard the fox shriek in surprise, when she saw the surprise turn into rage, she did not back off... Even when she barely had time to move away, even when she tried to escape those sharp teeth. Fast... But she wasn't fast enough. Teeth clamped down on her shoulder, ripping through her soft pelt, dragging her down into the muck with a scream that cut through the marsh.

Pain burst like fire through her body, but still, she kicked, twisted, shrieked. Her claws found its face again and again, determined, furious, desperate to give Wolfpack time. Her blood mingled with mud, soaking into the cold ground beneath her.

She couldn't die, not here. Not now. She had her foster daughter to return to... She... She still had so much more to do, so much more to give her clan! She couldn't let this be the last thing Wolfpack would ever see of her either... She couldn't let her last talks with other cats today be just... Just that. She wanted more time. More... But if her sacrifice would give others more time... Wouldn't that be enough...? No... No... The pain raked through her, the fox was relentless... And her mind wavered momentarily to her brother...

Stars, give me strength...!

AND I AM SORRY MY CONSCIENCE CALLED IN SICK AGAIN

She stiffened before she screamed.

It was the first thing he noticed; the way her body locked up, eyes wide, voice caught in her throat. It made the fur along his spine rise before his name even left her mouth, brain reading the signs of 'wrongredflagsDANGER painted across every inch of her form.

"WOLFPACK"

He turned. Saw red fur and teeth and motion– but he didn't move.

Not because he couldn't. Wolfpacks instinct knew flight or fight, but they did not know freeze. No, for all intents and purposes he should be moving– to run, to attack, something-- but he didn't. But the fox wasn't the thing that stopped him in his tracks.

It was her.

Marbleshine. Barrelling forward with no hesitation, throwing herself between him and those teeth like she was something fierce enough to save him.

And in that heartbeat, he hesitated, unable to make sense of it. Unable to wrap his head around the why. They both knew she wasn't built for this. She wasn't a fighter. Marbleshine was naive optimism, honey in her voice, and that stupid woven friendship bracelet she'd left in his nest the other morning.

And she was getting ripped apart right in front of him.

Something in him cracked.

A growl tore from his chest, deep and guttural and full of hate. He hit the fox broadside, claws catching fur, teeth snapping for anything they could reach. It stank of carrion and filth and hunger, and he didn't care a single bit about any of it when the wretched little beast abandoned Marbleshine to defend itself. Wolfpack may not have been bigger, but he was pissed and filled with savagery, digging his fangs to the root with each bite, feeling the snagging and tear of flesh and fur with each brutal rake of his claws.

He didn't stop, not even when blood ran hot down his flank, not even when teeth glanced off his cheek.

He couldn't kill it alone, but he could hurt it, could make it regret ever fucking sniffing a cat from the marshes.

The blow to it's eye was half luck and half skill. Two of his claws sank deep, and heard the thing scream and yelp, rearing back and tearing its face from his grip and spattering the ground with droplets of blood. It staggered, rubbing at it's face with a forpaw as it backed away, and while a part of him was tempted to give chase as it turned and disappeared back into the brush, his brain seemed to finally kick back online as he stood there, muscles still rigid beneath mottled, bloodied fur, chest heaving for breath and fur still bristled.

The fight was over, chaos returned to unsettling quiet in the span of a few harrowing moments.

"Marble."

He spun, crossing the distance towards her swiftly. She was still laying in the dirt, shoulders caked in blood, and he crouched low beside her, voice rough and unfamiliar to him with whatever tone it called to her in. "You absolute idiot. What were you thinking–"

He bit back the rest of his words, alarmed by the concern and frustration in his voice. By how much it sounded like he cared. Did he? Was that what this feeling trying to choke him was? Like a vice around his throat and a rock in his chest.

"Nevermind. I've got you. It'll be okay." He wasn't sure who he was reassuring anymore. "Can you move at all?" he asked, blood dripping from the side of his face and down a hind leg.

MARBLE OF SHADOWCLAN

The world around her had become a blur. She was aware of the pain, sharp, deep, consuming. Her body felt like it had been tossed around like nothing more than prey, left battered and torn. The fox hadn't appreciated her approach, hadn't respected her gentle spirit or her will to protect. She was a healer, not a warrior. She could hunt, she could defend… but this? This was survival. This was instinct. And she had lost.

Marbleshine's limbs trembled, her body slick with blood and matted fur. Her wide eyes were full of tears, not just from the pain, but from the shock. Her breaths came in short, shallow bursts as she watched the chaos unfold. Somewhere in the haze, she saw Wolfpack, still fighting, still refusing to back down. She had hoped… hoped that maybe she'd given him a moment. Just a moment to prepare, to react. But all she'd done was fall. She couldn't move. Or maybe she could… and just didn't know how anymore. Everything hurt. Her mind swam, but one thing stayed clear, Wolfpack standing over her, snarling, driving the fox back. Defending her. Always defending.

And then, finally… the fox fled.

Relief tried to rise in her chest, but it was drowned in pain and shame. She sucked in a breath, sharp and strained, willing herself to stay conscious. Don't let him see you weak. Don't let him see you like this. Tears slid down her cheeks, trailing to the ground as she heard him turn toward her. His words were harsh " Absolute idiot. What were you thinking? " but not unkind. Just afraid. Just angry. At the danger. At her. " I'm sorry.. " she rasped, her voice barely more than a breath. " I'm sorry… I-I saw the fox and… you… I just wanted to keep you safe. " She tried to sit up, shaking with the effort. She had to move. Had to get to camp. She needed Cicadabuzz… oh no… she didn't want to bother him. Not for her. Not for this.

" I'm okay... " she whispered, though the words felt like lies. " I'm okay… " But the moment she tried to rise again, her legs gave out. She crumpled back to the earth with a sharp cry of pain. Her body refused her will. " I'm sorry… " she murmured again, the shame more painful than her wounds. " Just… just give me a moment. I just… I need a moment… " Her eyes darted weakly across the ground, searching through the blur of leaves and blood. " Cobwebs… " she gasped. " Are there… are there any cobwebs nearby? It'll stop the bleeding… just need to stop the bleeding… "
