I wish the dawn will come
It wasn't supposed to hurt. Pain was a foreign thing to him now, he had stopped feeling it in all but his heart since dying so many moons before. It ached when he watched his kits made apprentices, it stung when he watched his mate spiral into something darker he didn't know how to handle and so he stopped watching her say for fleeting glimpses. If he were alive would he alter the paths, would he have been able to stop the madness that came from the gathering, that came from uncertain guidelines and too much empathy to speak of. The tabby winces as he stumbles forward, the field of white flowers so thick it looks almost like snow seem to catch his paws with every step but he eventually finds himself stepping around the lone willow tree at the center of the ethereal field to find her.
"Not quite to plan." Thornstar purrs in amusement, despite the weariness that now clings to him and the way the world blurs before his vision; he really shouldn't have done that, it was too much for him but maybe it was just enough to make a point. Next time we cover the moon with clouds or something... He had wanted to visit Pikestar as well but he had been so shocked at the revelation he hadn't acted and by then time was moving ever swiftly forward into the next leader's blood being spilled.
The chocolate tabby slip around to her side fully now, head hanging low and he sits, two tired souls in an endless void where time stretched on eternally and every minute here was like a single second back there. "You're a fool, Junebug, but a more honest and loving cat to lead our clan I could not imagine. Still, let's try to leave the self-sacrificing to a minimum hm?"
A lot of talk for a cat who had done what he just did, his translucent figure flickers occasionally still, edge warping and glittering pieces of his pelt drifting off as he struggles to maintain his shape; it felt as if any moment he would shatter into pieces.

There's a bright day — through the dark night.

this time was different.

the sensation of teeth grinding down against the thick casing of her throat... the way in which breath had felt like drowning. it was a far more violent end than the last... and every second spent staring up at the glow of the full moon had been a cold comfort. it's that same chill that crept underneath the surface of her skin, in a overwhelming opposition to the warm bath of blood down her chest; nauseating.. that's what that feeling had been right before it all grew too distant to recognize anymore. at what point had a merciful stillness washed over them... blanketed by silence and sequestered away to hide amongst starlight?

it felt like years had past since these pale blue, endless skies had sat serenely above her head. since the quiet rush of a bountiful, eternal river-way had hummed a soothing lullaby. heavier then than she was now... in body, in mind.

aquamarine eyes trace the patterns of the bark on the trees, timeless and ripe with the fruits of memory. for all the spirits that had come to rest beneath it, and all the stories shared between ghosts just looking to remember home. how long would it be before she sat here, under these branches with no expectation of waking up again- could she promise that exact moment wasn't now? the sound of a rumbling purr draws her gaze down from the canopy, locking onto Thornstar with a pained pinch of her brows. he looks... wrong... transient in his ability to linger here with her.

"No... it wasn't the plan," she agrees.

he draws around her to find a spot to sit, to keep her company and with an anxious tug in her chest she fears maybe it is bad news. maybe those lives had rules... and maybe this time she wouldn't be saying goodbye again. but he doesn't apologize, doesn't rest a paw on top of hers like it would be the only thing left to ground her from a coming panic.

ears fall flat at the gentlest of scoldings one could hope for- to be called a fool and know it means something sweeter. "I'll keep it in mind," the spotted tabby relents, whiskers twitching slightly as the stubborn prickles of death's last moment of terror still clings somewhere between her shoulder blades. "You wouldn't blame me if I sent Owlbark to visit you too soon, right?" it's a joke.... mostly. she had been serious, prepared to trade a life for his if only to prevent the permanence of his absence where hers would be temporary. "I worry he's going to get himself into trouble I can't talk my way out of. He got lucky... this time..."

her confidence dims in the afterglow of triumph, if you could even call it that. "I don't know how long I can keep this up. Am I even doing it right?"
