Brook couldn't shake the fear that clung to her like mist on the riverbank. Her eye was always on Lilac, her only remaining kit, watching her every move as though she might vanish if she looked away for even a moment. Wherever Brook went, Lilac was never far behind. And if Lilac wandered, Brook would follow without hesitation.

She had become quick to abandon conversations at the slightest tug on her tail or call of her name. Lilac's smallest needs became Brook's greatest priority. If she felt her daughter was in the wrong company or faced even the smallest danger, she didn't hesitate to pull her close. Fear dictated her actions now, a fear that was relentless and unforgiving.

Brook couldn't bear the thought of losing Lilac too. She had become fiercely protective, some might say overprotective. Others whispered that she was overbearing. But Brook didn't care. She refused to take any chances.

As she sat beside her daughter, her tongue rasped gently over Lilac's fur, the rhythmic motion grounding her in the chaos of her mind. Voices hummed around her, distant and unimportant for now. She felt no safety here, no stability. The loss of her other kit had shaken something deep within her, breaking the fragile sense of peace she'd once clung to.

She'd cried out many times that they needed to leave, to find somewhere better. Somewhere safer. Each time, her pleas had been dismissed, blamed on her grief. But Brook knew it wasn't just that.

She paused her grooming to nuzzle Lilac gently, her voice soft with worry. " Are you okay, my heart? " she murmured, her gaze filled with love and fear as it lingered on her daughter's face.
