The way back home—what a strange, unfamiliar word for him—is equally as quiet as it had been originally. Perhaps it's the weight of it all that stops maws from opening too easily.

The cat that treks beside Meadowpaw is someone else- Dimmingsun, they had called him.

Bengt had been left behind, soaked up by rays of moonlight reflecting off cold stone.

Of course, it's not that simple. A new name cannot wipe the slate clean. He can hide behind it if he wants, use it to his advantage, but that is all it is: a tool. Dimmingsun, medicine cat of WindClan, is but a new angle to Bengt, former loner- or rogue, depending on who you asked. He has been given direct purpose; not many cats can say that. The whole concept of StarClan still feels foreign to him, like something kits may come up with in their boredom... but he cannot dispute their existence, not anymore.

They have seen him, presumably for what he is, and still decided to accept him.

Or maybe WindClan is just this desperate for a new healer.

He grins at his own joke, but does not voice it as he peers at Meadowpaw. Her former mentor's strange disappearance had shaken her, even if she had tried her best not to show it to others- others who depend on her for their very lives. It would be cruel to turn that into laughing matter.

"Ready?"
he asks just to say something to her. Dimmingsun still feels light, like the next breeze could carry him off his paws, and that is difficult to put into words. Instead he lets the question linger and do the talking for him; he knows this might still be painful for Meadowpaw. Even if she has accepted that Gladebloom is not coming back, that wound can easily begin bleeding again when their Clanmates inquire the new medicine cat. He is, by definition, a replacement.

Once she has given him her answer, Dimmingsun walks with her into camp, side-by-side. Despite the hour, there are still cats lingering about as they no doubt await their future. How odd it is to be the subject of said future.

For a moment, he doesn't know what to say. It's rare for Dimmingsun to be at a loss of words, but simply greeting the Clan like he would normally does not feel fitting.
"StarClan has approved of me,"
he reveals at last, not allowing his face or voice to betray how he feels about it.
"They named me Dimmingsun, and allowed me to be your medicine cat."

Takes place at the end of August.
No need to wait for @Meadowpaw !

MEADOWPAW
x

The walk back leaves her feeling strange. Meadowpaw tries to label what she feels. Grief? A loss of some sort, painfully twisting between her ribs, struggling to detach itself from her body.

Weary green eyes study the golden tom on the way back to camp. What does he feel? He is not physically different, but something has changed. He viewed a side of their world few others see. StarClan has bestowed him the same gifts that she has, and that Gladebloom had before him. If her former mentor is out there somewhere, she wonders if the gifts will be stripped from her. If they've somehow transferred from one cat to the next, or if what he's been bestowed is his alone.

Did you regret it? Would you say it was a brace or a chain? Those are all things she hungers the answers for but can't seem to bring herself to ask. Meadowpaw wonders if those questions might be ones she would rather ask someone else. Someone who isn't there anymore and hasn't been for a while.

He asks if she's ready, and Meadowpaw nods stiffly. Whatever she feels right now, it isn't hesitation. There'd been enough hesitation the past few moons. Now was a time to move forward. Meadowpaw takes a breath to steel herself and then moves in step to greet the rest of their clanmates. She imagines they will want to know how it went.

They will want to know if they have a medicine-cat again…

There is a brief moment where nothing is said. There are eyes on them now, but they aren't swarmed with questions, not like when he first came to camp. Eventually, it feels like there is an exhale. A moment where something gives, and Dimmingsun announces StarClan's decision.

Meadowpaw adjusts from one foot to the other. She already knew what the outcome would be, but now she doesn't know how to respond. Should she congratulate him? Tell him that she looks forward to learning from him? Neither of those answers feels right, so she opts to say nothing at all.

Meadowpaw values kindness and remembrance. As a kit, she internalized her mother's lessons, but questioned whether her way is the only way. She has broken free from the heavy burden of her mother's expectations due to their estrangement after the fire. She remains kind and soft-spoken through all she's endured, but is not afraid to speak out for what she believes is right.

Meadow works tirelessly at any task she undertakes, desperate to prove herself capable and worthy despite her disability. Without her mother's guidance, she finds new ways to express herself.

In conversations, she is gentle, thoughtful, and withdrawn, often hiding her struggles, fearing others seeing her as incapable. She continues to have a strong bond not only with her sister, but with her adopted family as well. Meadow uses her new freedom to support and deepen the bonds with her clanmates. Additionally, she has started to explore the more spiritual side of herself…

Her worldview is a complicated mix of hope and frustration. She wants to believe that there's hope at the end of all the suffering, but feels trapped by her limitations. With enough time and support, she may find a way to overcome her limitations and accept herself.
