It has been 100 or more years since then, the clans of the forest are but distant memories to any cats still alive, stories passed down to kits of strangely named wild warriors and leaders with nine lives but the time of the clans is upon us once more and the stars shine yet again.

Sweetpaw's apprenticeship has been rather uneventful. It's been almost a moon now since she had been apprenticed, and her mentor does not seem to care much for the bond between them or the quality of Sweetpaw's training. Every day is the same: training, patrol, and chores. Sweetpaw likes a routine, but she does feel somewhat jealous of many of the other apprentices. She wishes that he wanted to have a real partnership with her, or otherwise would at least tailor her learning opportunities. Sweetpaw doesn't want to fall behind. Though her tenure as an apprentice is fresh, she knows that Hawkstar seems to always be watching.
What was supposed to be a patrol has quickly devolved into nonsense. By way of a path that has taken them close to the gorge, they have come close enough to the fox burrow that a few of the attending apprentices have scampered over to dare one another to get as close to it as possible. Though there's a chance it's unoccupied, there's some merit to their actions being considered a dare. Having been stuck on this patrol because Sweetpaw's mentor is doing who-knows-what, she haughtily stands back and watches their shenanigans, as obedient as always. She can't want to tell her mentor about her good behavior, as much as it seems like troutpine doesn't care.
"I don't get why they do that," Sweetpaw voices, blinking round eyes at the other cats who stand back "It's like they want to tempt fate..." her words trail off and she tips her head slightly, as if deeply pondering something. The apprentices are taunting and shouting at one another, and Sweetpaw watches silently. After a long pause, she glances at the clanmates who stand beside her- a wise choice given the potential implications- and asks: "Do you believe in fate? Like there's some force out there that chooses things for us and we have nothing we can do to change it?"
