there are a hundred poor reasons to pick a deputy.

as she untangles her legs from the flurry of unsteady paws that swarm around her, Juniperstar finds her thinking to be as vaguely shaped as morning fog. they are loud... and unruly... and in constant demand of her time- when was she meant to have a moment of quiet? or a second to encourage others towards the direction of the owl tree that had been scouted out for hunting? how could she keep up with their earnest reports about murky cat scent near that stretch of tarmac when the kittens rose their voices to shrill screams as if to talk over the adults that interrupted their discovery of the limits of their lungs?

it isn't as though she can say it doesn't amuse her... doesn't inspire a relief in the cracks of a tattered heart... but they are a level of disturbance that can't be overlooked.

so maybe it's just that he'd been kind in every passing glance... maybe it was his optimistic sense of duty, not diluted in the slightest since they'd endured a midnight massacre and come out alive on the other side. maybe someone could say that his pelt is so flamboyant compared to the earthy tones of most others that he is simply eye-catching and there is little merit beyond that. they are rumors she would not asauge with any grand speech... in fact, as eager teeth reach towards her belly furs while she stands, Juniperstar looks hardly considerate of who her gaze finds at all.

they yank without knowing themselves, earning a suppressed hiss of surprise, quickly bending down to try to coax the mischievous kit to stop climbing at her legs to reach up for her. "I know, I hear you..." whether that's enough to appease them or not is another subject entirely... and just as quickly as she'd moved to reassure them, her head lifts again, picking up her legs alike a hesitant deer to nimbly trot over the top of their heads, closing the distance between herself and her target with a burst of energy spawned from nothing.

"Brightpetal," the chocolate molly meows in greeting, reaching forward to brush her cheek against his (he's something of an affectionate tom, if she remembers right). "It's good you're here actually..." her tail whips like a reed in the wind, almost wild with its anticipation. "I need some help and I trust that you'll do so thoughtfully and with everyone's best interests at heart..." not just the living- selfishly her heart squeezes, desperate to encourage the voice of someone who would not forget the dead either. "You'll be ThunderClan's deputy..."

it is hardly a question seeking consent, so self-assured that the answer would be a resounding yes. her ears sit forward, awaiting the reply she expects with a small tilt of her lips into a hopeful smile. "Make sure that everyone's going out to hunt, don't send anyone towards the rock piles by that Dark Path, there's likely snakes nesting there. And uhm... thank you." already there are sniffles of disapproval from the kittens, teetering their way towards her to interrupt what is a very important and impromptu meeting. "As soon as they're sleeping I'll be hunting too... Just let me know if you have any questions. You'll do great."

With any luck, better than she did at Thornstar's side.

(𓆩✧𓆪) "amaaaaaaa!" the rallying gurgle of the young tomkit pierces his mother's soft pink ears. she moves as if to leave him, and it's not something dreamkit will be having. thorn-sharp baby claws prickle against her pale leg fur as juniperstar's copy clambers up her leg, babbling to himself, beseeching her to remain where she is. she bends down to comfort him and he bats at her muzzle, pressing his tiny head against hers before it is suddenly gone again. left in the empty nest with his brothers, dreamkit huffs.

magpiekit and asterkit roll and wriggle next to him, and he turns his attention to their presence for a moment. they are almost comfort, almost juniperstar, but not quite. "mmmfrrrg," he tells them, and gnaws briefly on magpiekit's folded ear before stumbling back and onto his butt. surprised at falling, the boy doesn't move for a few moments, body stock still. faint rumbles from above come to him, the vocals of his mother and someone else. twisting his tiny head, he locates her presence and begins the arduous journey to retrieve her. whether he is accompanied by two brave brothers or not, dreamkit will fetch juniperstar home. hazy blueberry eyes, already beginning to take on a hint of their bright ember to come, find a blurry shape in the form of brightpetal. beyond him is dreamkit's mother, and so he presses forth, stumbling up… up… up… and over the mountain in front of him that is thunderclan's new deputy's paw. "awmawwmaa!"

COPPER OF THUNDERCLAN

Copperstorm padded forward quietly, his mind abuzz with thoughts that seemed to multiply with each passing day. Lately, his thoughts often drifted to the sight of kits scampering around their parents, their tiny squeaks and boundless energy filling the camp. It stirred something in him, a budding idea that refused to be silenced. A family with Dewshine... Here! in ThunderClan. The thought warmed him, but doubt crept in just as quickly. It was still too soon after everything they'd been through, and he didn't want to rush or impose. She had sacrificed so much to be here.

So for now, he let the thought linger, safely tucked away in his heart.

His musings were interrupted when his ears swiveled at the sound of voices nearby. His golden gaze followed, curiosity flickering as he noticed Juniperstar speaking with Brightpetal. He padded closer, just in time to catch the word deputy tumble from his leader's mouth.

Surprise flared briefly in his expression before he quickly composed himself, his fur fluffing out slightly. This was good, he decided. Juniperstar had been carrying so much alone, leaning on others only when absolutely necessary. A deputy would provide a steadying presence, especially with the demands of leadership and motherhood demanding her attention.

" A good choice. " he remarked warmly, stepping closer. He dipped his head respectfully to both cats, a genuine smile on his face. " Congratulations are in order, Brightpetal. " he added, his voice bright with approval. Amusement glimmered in his golden eyes as a tiny kit clambered its way over to Brightpetal, teetering unsteadily before toppling right over his paw. Copperstorm chuckled softly at the sight.

" You'll have your work cut out for you, I'm guessing. " he teased lightly, the warmth in his tone making it clear it was all in good humor. " But I've no doubt you'll rise to the challenge. "

He had been... busy, in the hours and days following the birth of Juniperstar's kits. Serpentberry's own, on top of Palefern's- mouths, always hungry, demanding for more, and not to mention their caretakers. He's sure he isn't the only one working day in and day out to keep them fed, the hunting patrols at his flank keeping him of sane mind, but it is hard work. A breath leaves him as he pushes free of the warrior's den, their self-assigned space almost already crowded and needing more work. Baby blues blink sluggishly at the den as he leaves it, and his head turns to catch an interaction, much like Copperstorm does.

Brightpetal is Juniperstar's target, and he feels he knows the words leaving her mouth before it happens. A second, someone intended to take the helm when she was not of stable legs. The tom shifted, coming introspective, eyes studying that of the interaction silently at first. Copperstorm's own words finally spurred him forward, and Thunderflash did much of the same. To ask how he felt about this... he wasn't sure. No, there was no acrid jealousy, just an unsureness. Juniperstar may have the excuse of a fogged brain at the moment, but he isn't sure himself about this pick. A smile is put onto his maw regardless. He is happy for a clanmate being recognized for their work, and he can show that. It is easy to keep the hesitation off of his face and away from his eyes.

"Aye, congrats are in order." He hums, much like Copperstorm. Blue eyes stray towards the other warrior, trying to calculate how he feels, before dropping his eyes to what spurs his vision from below. He chuckles quietly, speaking, "Awh, y' bab. What are y' doin' out here, mm?" Thunderflash did feel a level of protectiveness over this kit. This one, he had licked back to life, kept warm, carried to their camp, their home. Ensured the kit's survival as much as he could. "And, Junip?" He speaks, a new nickname reached and pulled from the depths of his mind without realizing he had. Baby blues moved, the smile in their gaze dropped for something more serious, as he focused on their leader. "It'd do y' well to rest. Brightpetal should be able t' take over for a bit."

Was it wrong of him to say such a thing? He didn't give a rats ass, honestly. Stepping to the middle of the woods to have her kits alongside a frozen river where predators likely circled- he knew Ghoststrike was watching, and yet, he couldn't shake the way his pelt tingled out there- and now wanting to leave sleeping, young kits to go hunting? "'sides, th' rest of us have th' huntin' covered. Y' rest yer pretty head." His head tilts, the last sentence said with a warm chuckle, eyes crinkling as he grinned.

"Ah, hello Juniper...star?" The mysticism of leadership, what it meant for them and StarClan, felt contorted as the she-cat bumped her head against his own, a reminder that despite everything, she was still as tangible as the others. It was perhaps too dramatic to say he would never wash his cheek again and yet, he pictured invisible stardust upon it, a forever-blessing from those who'd lost their lives so tragically. She spoke further and, though his ears warmed, he did his best to focus, nodding along until the strangest little sonnet emerged from her maw.

You will be ThunderClan's Deputy.

He smiled dumbly. "Ah, ok." A pause, long enough for Dreamkit's mewls to pierce the brief silence between them. Within another heartbeat, it clicked. His eyes shot open , his fur standing as if witnessing something truly horrific. "Huh, wait, what?" Deputy? Him? It wasn't that he didn't see himself as worthy (well, mostly, a part of him did have to wonder if someone a bit grumpier would've sufficed), but... he couldn't confidently say what a Deputy even did. Juniperstar had been made leader too soon for him to learn, even as she explained it now, his mouth grew dry. Everyone hunts but not near the Path because there's snakes - but who was everyone? Should he get the elders involved? Should the apprentices sit it out until they knew better? The possibilities fogged his head, all too eagerly, he nodded, his heart thrumming as fast as a hare's. Juniperstar had enough on her paws, he'd figure it out, he had to figure it out. "I'll do my best," he promised, using his energy to keep his voice steady. 'I promise... I won't let you die. Your kits will have their mom around for a while.' He beamed as Dreamkit tried to grab her attention again, a chuckle mixed with mirth and nerve placating the gap in conversation. "Thanks, in StarClan's name, I'll be the second best Deputy, promise." Because no one could ever be better than the first.

Copperstorm's voice caused him to turn his head, teeth flashing in merriment at the praise from the older warrior. "Aw, my ears are gonna go all— woah hey." Something tiny brushed against his paw and he turned back, greeted by Dreamkit scrambling over the end of his limb. "Woo, big jump! Way to go kit! Let's get you back to your mama," Gently, he gave Dreamkit a nudge along, hoping to reunite him a little bit faster with the leader. When he was content that he was safe, his grinning figure turned back towards Copperstorm. "Yeah... yeah... but hey! I just gave out my first order, it only gets easier from here, right?" Even he could taste the blind optimism with such a sentiment, but he tried not to let it bother him.

The clan needed a brave face, now that he was one of the 'big' faces, it was more important than ever to be positive. Thunderflash spoke next and wordlessly, Brightpetal took in every word, head dipped slightly. They were similar in age, but when the tabby spoke, it was easy to feel as if he had a lifetime of experience over him. The things he said were sensible, things that Brightpetal hadn't considered himself about letting Juniperstar rest, about letting himself take up more than just patrols for a time. Almost deferential, he nodded, looking the new Caregiver over guiltily. "Yeah, that's what I'm here for! I mean... don't get me wrong I can't stop you, but just... let us help you out, alright? Or maybe get Serpentberry's advice first." His eyes blinked rapidly at the Medicine Cat's name - oh, he knew who he needed to speak to nest.

Owlbark was not ambitious and did have any goals to be at Juniperstar's side. He did not pine for the deputy position, and did not have a care for who received it. Or so he thought. Owlbark could not help but compile a personal list of cats he thought would make a splendid deputy. Thunderflash, Ghoststrike, and Gentleflame came to mind immediately.

He did not expect Brightpetal to be Juniperstar's choice. Owlbark, nesting materials in his mouth, happened to be passing by when Juniperstar affectionately greeted the tom and told him the news. It was not his place to interrupt this little meeting. Others were gathering to congratulate him, but that was not something that felt like Owlbark's duty.

He only hopes that the tom is as suited for the position as Junierstar thinks. He definitely had a lot of room to grow, but Owlbark didn't know if it would happen fast enough to keep the clan afloat.
