The vast increase in cats in the clan as of late had made the patrol rosters feel peculiar, but he wasn't one to argue. He tried to keep the patrol light, even if Roostertuft seemed apprehensive about him and had little to no time spent with Fogstare. Really, it made him realise how little he had interacted with his own clan, it felt like since finding out about the other clans.

He let out the slightest of sighs before plastering a warm smile on his face, looking to his patrol. "Aye, we got lucky with 'n easy patrol, huh! Most eventful thing 'm sure'll happen is if we run into 'r allies 'md get caught in a gossip circle or somethin'." Merrystalk chuckled. Really, he was glad for a quieter patrol. even his hunting had been interrupted with that corpse of the bison, sending his whole patrol into a panic. He would have to make sure to keep a tighter hold of control...

As they approached the border, something strange caught Merry's attention. The tortie's face contorted in confusion as he sniffed the air, tentatively approaching further towards the border. It seemed almost like... "Careful now, if I ain't mistaken 'm smellin' a monster 'nd it damn well don't sound like it's movin'..." He spoke quietly but intently, looking back towards his patrol, suddenly more on edge. A still monster was as dangerous as a speeding one.

Pushing towards the border, the scent remained faint, the confusion not faltering from his face. It was only as the patrol arrived at the Thunderpath that his nerves may have been unfounded. "Aye, well, it used to be a monster I s'pose."

Scattered along the Windclan and Shadowclan border seemed to be scraps of what was once a monster, shimmering hunks of blue pelt and a huge, rounded thing perched not far from where they all stood. Merrystalk's face fell, clearly unsettled at the sight. "What in Starclan's name coulda caused that much damage to a monster..." He tentatively approached the rounded thing, sniffing apprehensively. "Is that the thing's paw?"

Patrol prompt: As a regular patrol is brought to the Shadowclan border, they are surprised to find scattered remnants of a monster. Will the patrol investigate or remain wary of the dismantled beast as they try and figure out what happened at the border?

'Border patrol'? Again? How many times did they need to patrol these things? Fogstare complained internally, eyes closed and tail drooped low as he followed the other cats to the 'border' they were supposed to check.

He was barely starting to open his eyes when that big golden tom started calling out names and assigning tasks, almost missing when his own name was called. He just didn't get it.. was a day long nap too much to give him? Why did he have to be called... He sniffed a bit pathetically and meandered along, almost bumping into every other cat with each long and lazy step forward. Maybe if I keep my eyes closed long enough, I'll open them again back in my nest, warm and cozy...

Though, not even the delusion of still being asleep in his nest could save him from the strong acrid smell of a monster. He wrinkled his nose a bit as Merrystalk warned them to be careful, deciding to squint one eye open as a sort of compromise to the gale guard. As he opened his mouth to say something about the awful smell doing enough harm, his tired eyes shot open at the coming view of the once living monster. His fur bristled in an instinctive fear of the thing, years of avoiding being crushed by those large creatures still ingrained within his trembling limbs, but he couldn't stop the amazed grin on his face as they came closer.

Walking a bit faster, he broke away from the patrol to get a closer look at the tattered remains. "Whoa...! Do you think it got into a fight with another monster?" He flicked an ear back to the other cats, eyes wholly focused on the indescribable thing they were witnessing.

Sablestar kept his gaze focused on the odd sight before him. Fractured pieces of monster like exposed bone scattered across the Thunderpath but he could not fathom what could have possibly caused something so brutal. The tuxedo is sure he had never seen a monster killed like this before, not even challenged or harmed, it surely puzzled him.

WindClan scent was hardly detectable over the harsh toxic smell of fuel and rubber, and Sablestar only gave it attention once he saw the figures of the moorland cats approaching. He had been here long enough to believe this monster would not be rising again for some time, and whatever killed it was not making it's return any time soon. He approached the edge of the Thunderpath with caution, seeing Fogstare already keen on getting his nose closer.

"Ah, I've unfortunate news a monster does not resemble anything to the taste of prey." Sablestar meowed in amusement, his tension slightly giving way.

AND I AM SORRY MY CONSCIENCE CALLED IN SICK AGAIN

Wolfpack was no stranger to monsters, one of the many benefits of having lived as a wanderer before joining the colony all those moons ago. The various twoleg places he'd passed through– along with just about every winding thunderpath leading between them– were filled with the things, and so there was a certain level of desensitization he'd gone through that many of his clanmates hadn't. There was no worry about them wandering off the path to chase him down. No flinching when the rushing wind ruffled his pelt or one let out a rumbling growl as it went by.

It probably helped a little that he'd been born inside one.

The thing had been dead, of course. A gutted out husk in an overgrown field right on the edge of a twolegplace. Still, it'd helped when his mother finally brought him beyond the nest and gave him the 'don't mess around on thunderpaths' talk. Perhaps ironically, his only real scare with a monster had been in his younger days when he'd hopped up on the warm hood of one to nap, only for it to wake up beneath him growling a few hours later.

A lesson learned that the things were 'dead' just because they weren't running.

Still, he'd never seen a situation quite like this, with pieces of one spewed across a road. The only thing he could think of that could pull it off was another monster– he'd seen them growl and bellow at each other from time to time, but had never truly witnessed a fight.

Shadowclan weren't the only ones on the scene, though. Mismatched eyes were quick to spot the Windclan bodies investigating the mess as well, and it still felt strange to think of them– of anyone- as allies, but he was coming around to it more. Especially with Thunder, River, and Sky so close.

"Do you think two monsters fought here? Too bad we missed it, if so. I've never seen them go after each other before." he said, voice carrying enough to include the Windclanners. It definitely would have been an interesting story to retell to their respective groups.
