Smudgepaw
It was a fire that forced Nightingale to leave the old, derelict household where Smudgepaw was born. The memory drifts in-and-out of focus for the tortoiseshell she-cat, but Smudge remembers the heat. It was a fierce, and overwhelming warmth that had spread throughout the house. The fragmented image of the fire — the orange, incandescent glow against the darkened sky — stayed with Smudge. It's a fiery light that haunts the she-cat's dreams.
Nightingale had stumbled through the undergrowth afterwards with Smudge. She found the Colony, huddled together in the shadows of the wilderness. But winter changed everything — they needed a strong leader, and that's what Nightingale had died fighting for…right? So why does Smudgepaw feel empty? She should be filled with grief over her mother's death, but instead, she felt nothing. There was an uncomfortable void in the she-cat's chest. It's confusing and all-encompassing.
Smudgepaw looks up at the stars. Their cold, distant light flickers in the night-sky, and for a moment, she wonders if they feel as empty as she does.
