"...I'm just saying," The new warrior mews out to the cats with her as she picks her way along the border. "That I think a code all the clans follow might be helpful... Maybe that cat Owlbark killed wouldn't have died. Or maybe Cicadabuzz wouldn't have been attacked like bug was. Maybe at the very least we would have discovered who did it by now."

It was a rather morbid thought, in a way, but Sealdawn believed there was some truth to it. If they all held themselves to the same kind of standard, surely some sort of peace would come of it? She hoped so at least.

Sealdawn squinted across the scentline, frowning. The last time she'd been through here she had been chased by a coyote- probably the same one that later attacked Fleafire- and had hardly even noticed that she'd trespassed. The cats that had found her had been understanding, back then. But surely now such a circumstance would do nothing but bring unsheathed claws and snarling. She wondered if Swallowpaw or the other cat with her would do so now. She hoped not, at least.

"...Hope we didn't miss them on their own patrol, I just wanted to ask them about the code. ...And this Starclan they mentioned."

Had Mulberryburst known that the cats who called themselves "ShadowClan" did not know of StarClan, he would have made sure to avoid them at all costs. The thought of the clans that reside next to SkyClan not knowing of - or even having their own - the code was already daunting and dangerous in and of itself, but to have a leader that donned the title of -star without the clan even knowing of why the title was given like that? Of who the leaders were with their nine lives given to them by StarClan themselves? Well it would simply be blasphemous, it would prove to him that they were nothing but rogues pretending to be something that had been here once before long ago but they knew nothing of it in reality other than the names of the groups that called themselves clans.

It was lucky for the ShadowClanners then that Mulberryburst did not know of this, and it was even luckier for them that they were not ThunderClan for although he didn't trust any of the others it was ThunderClan that was trusted the least.

Coming across the border within the patrol that he was with, quietly the tree-climbing SkyClanner scaled down the bark of one of the trees, eyes focused on the border and the cats among it, flickering to each of them for but a moment as he tried to register whether or not he knew them, though they were all fresh faces to him. "How can SkyClan help you?" He'd speak, ears pricked as head cocked slightly to the side. He had no authority to decide whether or not they were allowed to join if this was an attempt at doing so - and although he doubted they'd be allowed due to their affiliation with the clan across the border he couldn't blame them for trying to be within the better of the clans - but hopefully there was something that he could do without someone being sent away to get Hawkstar.

indentttMothbite couldn't give less of a damn about the code. In his eyes, it's nothing more than an excuse for Skyclan to do whatever they wants. Their 'code' wasn't Shadowclan's, or that of any forest cat. Still, he follows Sealdawn to the tall pines, guiding Monsterpaw alongside him.

indentttThe sight of Hawthorne's shimmering pelt won't leave his mind. When Hawkstar spoke of 'Starclan', was that what she meant? Dead cats returning to the forest? Mothbite's mind is alight with questions. Did Starclan only show up to scold the living, or did they do other stuff to? Did every cat who died go there?

indenttt"They'll probably show up the second we get to close to the border." White claws reveal themselves beneath black fur. Mothbite isn't looking forward to a fight, but he'll defend Sealdawn and his apprentice if he needs to.

indentttHe's so fixated on looking for Skyclan's patrol that he doesn't notice the cat in the tree until they're climbing down to meet them. When he's asked about it later, Mothbite will emphatically claim that he did not jump out of his fur when he's met face-to-face with Mulberryburst. He certainly didn't squeak like a mouse, either.

indenttt"Damn! Why don't you 'help' by deciding not to sneak up on a cat?"

———— Little fly, thy summer's play, my thoughtless hand has brushed away. ✦

While Mulberry leapt from branch to branch, Maple slunk beneath the looming trees, a shadow come to life, tracing their brothers' every movement. Their patrols more often than not were relaxed and uneventful, but as they drew to the border, their remaining good eye narrowed curiously. A bundle of cats, unfamiliar scents, yet looking around aimlessly. A smirk of a smile laced their maw, but before a single step from the undergrowth they could take, Mulberry leapt from their perch to meet the cats.

Now, the yelp from the older tom caught even Maplemouse off guard, but in such a way they had to stifile a snort of laughter. It wasn't polite to snicker at guests, as much as watching the tom berate their brother made them want to laugh in his face. Instead, they composed themself ever so slightly, finally slinking to meet Mulberry with a smile and greeting the strangers with a curt nod.

"You should learn fast to not ignore the branches above if you wish not to be startled by Skyclan, Mousey." Their voice was a rumbling purr, as they inspected the three before them. The loudmouth tom was trying to make himself look more commanding, the young molly looking surprisingly comfortable at the border of the clan and a frankly enormous looking tom, but with eyes wide and nervous, they wondered if he was but an apprentice.

Regardless, the three of them did not smell of any neighbour, not the salty sweetness of Riverclan, nor the malt warmth of Windclan. A flick of chance if they were Thunder or Shadow, and dependent on that alone, would mean whether the siblings would need to unsheath their claws upon these strangers.

"But instead of hostility, tell us your task, what you seek from us." The chocolate mink sat on their haunches, relaxed all things considered, casting their glance to the molly, as it seemed the older tom was still winding down from his "terrifying" encounter with their brother. "While Mulberryburst and I are less inclined to a fight, if you do not state your purpose, our clanmates are less forgiving to trespassers." It was blunt, yes, but necessary. Dawdling would mean danger for any one of them, and frankly, Maplemouse didn't want to waste time cleaning blood out of their fur.

while thunderclan declared themselves enemies of skyclan, swallowbreeze felt more cautious of those who lurk in the pocosin. trespassers who don't have an issue harming a star-gazing medic... a cruel act that shows more disrespect than she could imagine. skyclan wasn't safer at the gorge—because of the rats—but, she would've been less inclined to leave if she knew how the forest would be.

swallowbreeze treads carefully around the fourtrees border, she knows the scraggly toothed siblings will warn her if they sensed something. the ruckus came to the edge of the scent markers this time, and the molly raised her head, ears swiveling to catch maplemouse speaking to an irritated cat over the border, she can tell it's shadowclan before she makes her way over due to their strong scent.

mulberryburst and maplemouse have already done their jobs as warriors. she takes the unexpected diplomatic role when she picks out a familiar face in the patrol, "i recognize you!" she says to sealdawn, "sealpaw, right?" this group seems... normal!

Mothbite's assumption of Skyclan showing up when they get closer to the border proves true, and while the young warrior is startled as well by their sudden appearance she finds she only blinks in surprise as her head turns to watch the two older warriors approach.

"We're not here to start any trouble," Sealdawn glances at Mothbite before looking back to Maplemouse. "We just had some questions that Skyclan seems to be best at answering..."

Questions that Sablestar seemed adamant on avoiding answering... She didn't quite understand his apprehension-perhaps anger was a better word- when Starclan was brought up. He had said a spirit visited him back when they first found their new territory. Surely the spirit had been Starclan? What other power could possibly grant a cat nine lives? None that she could possibly think of.

Another cat approaches, one Sealdawn recognizes as the cat that'd been the first to find her back when she'd been chased across the border. Perhaps a familiar face would be more willing to explain. "Oh, Swallowpaw!" She visibly relaxes upon seeing the molly, but lets out a laugh at her old name being spoken with her head raised high and proud. "I'm Sealdawn now, actually."

Paws fumble awkwardly in the grass as the tabby frowns suddenly. Maybe this was a bad idea, actually. Maybe she should just leave it alone. But no, she'd come this far and Skyclan hadn't attacked immediately. It was likely the only chance she'd get to look for answers in quite a while if at all.

"We came here to ask about Starclan, I think I can speak for most of the forest that Hawthorne appearing that night at the gathering was the first we'd seen of Starclan... Save the clan leaders-" If Sablestar was approached by a spirit and given his nine lives and the name -star, then it seemed only logical the same had happened with the others. It was all too similar to be a mere coincidence otherwise. "...So, can you tell us..?"

And if they decided to share the code-whatever that was- she'd listen to.

He can't help the reactory smile that formed quickly on maw when Mothbite jumped, exclamation leaving his maw as soon as Mulberryburst's paws touched the ground and words left his lips. There was no time to speak however, casting a slightly apologetic glance his way - none on the border were being hostile after all - before his sibling started to speak, their words plain turning quickly to the task at paw. They spoke true however, that although they were willing to fight for their clan and territory if things could be dealt with without bloodshed then Mulberryburst was more than willing to do so, and the ShadowClanners had traveled through fourtrees and come to the border with claws sheathed and teeth unbared, so the only appropriate response for the time being was to mirror that even despite startling the others at first on accident.

Ears flick towards Swallowbreeze quickly when she spoke, picking out one of the ShadowClanners from their small patrol and surprise flashed across the tom's face. She knew them? Even as name was corrected he couldn't help but look towards the other confused for but a moment, curious as to how they knew each other before Sealdawn spoke at last, greeing Swallowbreeze as well as answering why they had come here.

Mulberryburst had heard of what happened at the gathering, though the fact the ShadowClanners knew the spirit that had come to them yet were still asking about StarClan left the SkyClanner confused - they saw the dead before them, a cat they had once known and knew then to be dead - yet didn't know of StarClan? "I don't know why you're at our borders instead of asking your leader -" He wasn't about to turn them away though, an opportunity to teach about StarClan was one that didn't come often other than kits freshly able to leave the nursery, "but they're our ancestors, the cats of the clans past and present that die go to StarClan where the prey is eternal and there are no fights. It's the final clan that everyone joins in death... able to give leaders their lives so they can protect their clan to the end." They could do so much yet the other clans knew so little.

Stormcrow heard the commotion and smelled the familiar sour smell of Shadowclan on the wind. She moves through the trees silently, and perches in one of the trees on their border, giving herself a nice view of the little gathering of cats. Shadowclan cats were asking about Starclan. Curious. Most curious. She descends, landing light on her feet and padding over to stand next to Swallowbreeze, her eyes narrowed as she surveyed the visitors from the muck.

"How does it come about that you call yourself a clan, appoint a leader and a medicine cat, but fail to know about Starclan?" She asks, not in the least curious, but rather points like a knife. "Even the other clans seemed to know of Starclan, even if they did not know their code."

She rolls her shoulders. Strange and dislikeable cats all around. "To join Starclan is a warrior's greatest honor. Death is but another gift. But those who do not follow the code, who steal, who cheat, who attack innocents… where they go, I do not know. But they are not found in the bountiful fields of Starclan."

indentttWhen Swallowbreeze appears, Mothbite relaxes, just a bit. He remembers her. The first time he had followed Sealdawn here, in the aftermath of a coyote attack, Swallowbreeze had treated them with kindness and sympathy. Not at all like the scorn he had expected. Maybe, Mothbite hopes, this meeting will be just as easy.

indentttIt's wishful thinking, of course. When Stormcrow begins speaking, Mothbite jumps, hissing and spitting, to Sealdawn's defense. "Talk about attacking innocents! Didn't one of your warriors get caught attacking Owlbark for no reason? Is he not in Starclan either?" He doesn't draw his claws, but his back is arched tall and his tail is lashing.

"I'm Talkin Here!"How dare these outsiders think so highly of themselves, and so lowly of the other clans. The clans who were here first. Mothbite hates the way Stormcrow looks down their nose at the forest clans. "Nah, I bet he gets to go anyways, 'cuz Skyclan is just that special."

indentttHe knows it's a low blow, bringing up a cat who died so recently. But in his defense, Stormcrow had struck first. "Sablestar was chosen by Starclan themselves to lead! They were the ones who named us 'Shadowclan'." It must have been Starclan, after all. Who else could it have been? Either Starclan had some reason to hide themselves from Sablestar, or Sablestar had some reason not to tell the rest of Shadowclan.

DINGO

Monsterpaw had remained quiet as usual as they had plodded along towards SkyClan's border but he had been silently eager to come along with on this particular patrol of sorts. Getting to go outside of camp was always much more thrilling but even more so was meeting the cats of the other clans especially after the events of the gathering, which had prompted many unanswered questions some of which he hoped would be answered in this meet-up with SkyClan.

Once approached by the SkyClanners the young apprentice thought it best to leave most of the talking to Mothbite and Sealdawn-- He wasn't exactly the most talkative anyway and they were his seniors, they'd know how to handle the talking part much better than he would, it'd be a good learning experience and he made sure to pay close attention to each cat that poke in turn. His copper gaze flicking from one pelt to the next as Sealdawn explained why they were here and more SkyClanner's approached.

Things had started off smoothly but quickly started to sour when one SkyClanner in particular asked rather sharp pointed questions, his mentor retaliating with an arched back and lashing tail. Monsterpaw kept his claws sheathed for now but the building tension made his fur prickle along his spine. He did his best to have it remain smoothed. It was a fair enough question to ask in the eyes of the other clans who did not know, why didn't they know of StarClan? Why hadn't Sablestar mentioned it to them all? StarClan was how he had his name afterall, right? Monsterpaw wasn't so sure now. But he didn't doubt that Sablestar was befitting of a leader, he had made ShadowClan and he had been chosen to lead them, or at least that's what he'd been told and what his mentor echoed now.

"And what is the code that needs to be followed in order to join StarClan?" He asked, finally choosing to speak up for once in his usual rumbled sort of mew, his tone even and curious despite the tension. He had a lot more questions, like how they even knew that such a place existed for certain but he was a cat of few words.

"oh! congratulations." upon a second glance, sealdawn appeared fully grown. she smiles bashfully when she sees it's her turn to give a correction, "my name is actually swallowbreeze, now."

her irrational embarrassment turns into curiosity quickly when sealdawn finally explains why they're here. she exchanges quick glances with the skyclanners around her, sharing the same curiosities as mulberryburst. swallowbreeze takes a step back from the conversation— she may seem like the most qualified to answer, but a medicine cat's relationship with starclan will always be different than a devout warrior. with how little they know, she's unsure on where to begin, it's almost overwhelming.

swallowbreeze's eyes narrow at mothbite's spitting accusations, her jaw clenching around words she'd rather leave in her throat. she never attended the gathering, all of her information has been given to her through curious questions and morning gossip over prey. she doesn't care for the full story.

a shadow asks a question. her attention shifts to the bright eyed apprentice, who blended perfectly in the environment. "we have a lot of rules, but, uhm, you're an apprentice, right? s-so, one of our codes is a newly named warrior must sit vigil for the night." there's far too many rules to dwell into for conversation, so she sticks with something that might keep an apprentice interested. "you must use that time to reflect on yourself... and–and uhm, your new responsibilities as a warrior."
