MAGGOTKIT

.
Maggotkit sat under a tall tree, content in its shade. To most, it would appear to just be staring at the bark, but Maggotkit knew better - in all the crevices of the great tree there resided all kinds of insects - centipedes, ants, lice and most importantly, beetles.

Maggotkit had learned quickly that it could hear them, just like it was promised in its dream. Being able to hear them, however, did not mean Maggotkit always understood what they were saying. Sometimes their words were too complex or unfamiliar to the kitten to properly grasp, things like larvae and thorax and elytra. But there were some things it understood - hunger and cold.

Maggotkit hummed quietly to itself, repeating noises similiar to those of the beetles, though not quite there yet. The most curious ones had already started to understand it, letting Maggotkit pick them up or even crawling over its pelt, though it knew soon it would be too cold for most of them to be out.

Maggotkit was so focused on its beetle friends that it completely missed the sounds of someone else approaching, unaware of everything besides what was in front of it. Only when someone else's fur brushed against it, it flinched in surprise and yelped out.

"Oh..." it breathed out, in relief. Maggotkit wasn't known for talking a lot, most of what they said was the simplest of phrases, with the fewest amount of words. After stilling their heartbeat enough, they finally declared, "Just you."

Peering over the side of the tree Centipedekit makes it's presence noise with a chipper "hiii" as they begin to trot towards their sibling. There is a certain grace behind their wobbly steps, not due to training at such a young age but it's the consideration behind every shuffle of the paw. Boredom had reached the child, the game he played for the day had started to lose it's appeal when he stopped finding leaves and stones to pile together. That and he felt a little too shy to ask the other kits to play with it today, what better way to fix that than pestering their sibling? Though it seemed it didn't really work at first, much to Centipedekit's dismay.

Maggotkit was still hunched, staring at... Oh! Beetles! He himself had tried to eat one recently but it didn't taste very good, since then a truce has been formed for the child painted in warm colours. "Mags" he calls out with a chipper whistle, tail raised high as it jumps towards their littermate with a small chittering noise. With a wide grin he hovers behind it, titling their head curiously as he paws at the ground, trying to glance first to make sure there were no wayward bugs about to be crushed underpaw. It seemed that Maggotkit was attracting them today, for whatever reason! He never thought to question any of his siblings about their odd goings and wasn't planning on doing it now. Crouching next to it they butt their head against their littermates shoulder.

"Watcha doing?" the question is levelled in a soft tone, gaze sharpening as he looks at the specific beetle that Maggotkit seemed to be particularly fond of this one. At least he enjoyed thinking of it that way.

MAGGOTKIT

.
Maggotkit worried Centipedekit's presence would disturb its new friends, but the cream-colored kit was careful not to step on any of them, avoiding them with respect. Maggotkit liked that.

"Listening." it answered simply, lifting one brave beetle with shiny green wings up. Rose beetle it called itself, though Maggotkit could not understand what that meant besides a name. The kitten brought it towards its sibling's face and declared, "It say it gonna be colder soon."

Maggotkit didn't understand how it could get even colder than it was now, each day they woke up to the morning air stinging their lungs and throat. At least they had their fluffy pelt, but would that be enough in the upcoming season, if it was only going to get colder? The kitten had no reason to doubt the words of the beetles though - they were wiser than it, more experienced. And, more importantly, they had no concecpt of lies. Or, that's what Maggotkit believed from its observations at least.

It watched as the rose beetle crawled towards Centipede's face, curious and catious at the same time. Smart. Some of its siblings had already tried eating the beetle's kind, though Maggotkit couldn't bring itself to do the same. The sounds of pain and fear as it held a beetle in its jaw was too much for Maggotkit to bear. It much more prefered listening to them talk.
