Slow Down, Just Breathe
She almost feels like a kit again- tail sticking straight up like the pine trees in Skyclan's territory and paws plodding along on unfamiliar ground that ordinarily would have her hesistant. If Honey closes her eyes she's almost positive she'd hear her brother, voice high as all young kits are telling her to keep up. But Sassafrass was not with the newly appointed Gale Guard today.

Patrols were still a novel concept- there'd been no need for such a thing back at the barn- but the calico was determined to do good by Dustystar's faith in her. So following along the gorge to see how far it'd stretch out along their territory was the day's plan with her little band of friends.

The sun had long risen and was beginning to make its descent and she was tempted to call it and head home before Honeyflower found herself blinking at something glinting in the distance. "There's something up ahead," She called softly over her shoulder. "Petalpaw, Coldpaw, stay close to the group please."

Once assured that the two apprentices were close to the other warriors Honey crept forward with tail held high to serve as a beacon for the patrol. Whatever it was that had caught her eye, she was sure it was massive.

A familiar, terrible scent reached her nose and Honeyflower cautiously craned her neck out from the grass. "...That's the biggest monster I've ever seen..!" Green eyes narrowed as she took in the patrol's surroundings. "I think it's asleep, its twolegs must not be around because I dont smell any. Does anyone else smell them?"

A small part of her wanted to get closer to see what lay beyond it, but the idea of it waking up and attacking when they had both Petalpaw and Coldpaw to account for made her uneasy. "What do you all think? Should we get a closer look first or head back now?"

——————— Does the wind feel a gladness at the work that it's done?

Molewhisker agreed to join a patrol out of a perceived obligation. A debt they felt as if they needed to pay for the kindness of the Windclan cats to welcome them to stay. Which of course, meant Mole had to leave their burrow in the day, nauseous from the brightness of the day, but their eyes adjusted in time.

They padded along, slow strides, keeping an eye on the other cats. It wasn't all too aware of most of these. They knew kind Honeyflower from the meeting, recognised Tinytail from being a fellow borrower, having stumbled into her once before. Though the smaller ones? They were unsure but kept a passive eye on them. It didn't seem as if there would be much danger, but there was little harm in keeping the apprentices in their sight.

Mole hadn't asked where they were going, just that there was a stretch of land to gaze upon. Perhaps they could uncover something useful. Water springs, a cave, who knows? But either way, they mostly stared at their own paws as they walked, averting their gaze as much as they could from the light. They would try and talk with the other cats, but a topic of conversation they couldn't think of. Dustystar and Goldenroar were both rather good to conversate with as they often had something new going on, but new cats were far harder to begin to talk with.

Though, of course, something else would trigger a conversation between the patrol. Mole's eyes craned up as Honey alerted them to... Something. Its vision struggled to adjust to what was ahead, but as they all grew closer, its fur stood on end. There was a moment where Mole felt its paws frozen in the grass, not able to budge an inch let alone blink. Like a stare off with the great yellow monster, they refused to look away.

The chimaera swallowed hard, snapped out only by the observation from the gale guard that there was no twoleg around. Tentatively, Molewhisker sniffed the air, not a scent of twoleg nor the acrid scent these foul beasts unleashed. It took a tentative step ahead, eyes darting to and fro along the bright, reflective pelt of the huge thing. "Nothing." They shook their head, looking towards Honey but not quite meeting her eyes. "No twoleg has awoken it in a very long time, look." A red paw motioned to the enormous round paws of the beast, grasses and plants weaved highup around and even beneath the monster. "It has slumbered for many, many moons, the plants are undisturbed around it."

Still, they sniffed the air, worried. Heart thudding in their chest. While they could again move and think, they found themself pacing nervously. Though they swallowed hard, looking to the apprentices, not wanting to scare them when they were likely catastrophising. "It is... Unlikely to awaken. These kinds of monsters are slow-moving, and their heavy paws cannot let them turn nor climb." Molewhisker breathed, still eyeing the beast. "As long as we are careful and always avoid its paws and... maw." They motioned to the wide, dulled-looking protrusion from the front, it didn't have teeth like a maw, but the damage it could cause when awake was much akin to it. "We will be fine."

Molewhisker nodded, looking to Honeyflower. "I will... Join you if you wish to keep searching." There was a thinly veiled fear, only soothed by the knowledge of the signs of a dormant monster. At least they could serve a purpose by bringing that to the patrol, but they feared that was about as helpful as they could be. Mole knew they were not brave nor strong, but they would steel themself nonetheless.
