♢ Frogheart padded as confidently as she could through the pocosin. It was her first time leading a patrol in some time, and hop was taking the duty seriously. Mirepurr calling his name had been a surprise, but not an unwelcome one. Any opportunity hop had to protect the clan from starving was a challenge she was willing to accept. Though, she did wish it hadn't been a patrol to the Monster Tree. He refused to show any fear as the patrol approached the tall, eerie tree. How a monster had gotten itself lodged in the tangled branches of the enormous oak was a question Frogheart didn't want answered. The possibilities made his belly churn. The noise and stench of the nearby Thunderpath only made it more unnerving. Looking up into the dead eyes of the monster, he tried to swallow her anxiety.
"Okay everyone," she mewed, peering around at hops patrolmates. "Let's be careful. I don't want any cats falling and getting hurt. We also don't know what surprises that monster might have in store for us." Hop looked up wearily once more. Then, wanting to set a good example, hop parted her jaws to scent the air for any kind of prey. Though it was Leafbare, the temperature was mild. Beyond the harsh scent of monsters on the Thunderpath, there was a faint scent of a cardinal. Her heart leaped in her chest. Could it be?
He approached the base of the Monster Tree and reached up, digging his claws into the bark experimentally. She'd never been much for climbing trees, if he was being honest, and the weakness in her limbs brought on by moons of scarce prey worried him. But Mirepurr, and by extension Sablestar, and by extension the clan, were counting on this patrol being a success. Hop couldn't be a coward, not when there were mouths - many, many mouths, including her own - to feed. After being sure his claws were safely fastened in the tree, he began to hoist herself upward. Hop didn't even realize she wasn't breathing until she reached the lowest branch and clambered onto it. That wasn't so bad, he thought, though hop pointedly refused to look down. "Come on then, one at a time!" He called before turning her attention back to the scent of the cardinal. Ears drooping, hop realized the scent had vanished. She resumed climbing upward, trying to fight the despair writhing in her empty belly.
