I WON'T SMILE, BUT I'LL SHOW YOU MY TEETH

OOC- Trigger Warnings for all the usual Ghost stuff + mentions of nightmares and minor dissociation from reality/confusion dreams with reality.

Ghost was having a rough night. It wasn't unusual by any means– it would have been stranger if he'd slept soundly throughout the night, instead. It was one of the many reasons he slept alone, his nest jammed into a crack in the quarry wall not far from Serpents dens.

Usually the dreams were predictable to some degree; the sound of crunching bones and canine growls, the panicked screams of a familiar voice in bloody soaked camp, the feeling of dirt in his lungs and his body pinned beneath something heavy. Nothing pleasant, but nothing particularly new, either– he'd had months to let the newest one settle into the roster, and he hadn't thought there'd been anything significant that would trigger another.

But tonight he didn't get the usual.

~~~~~~
It was an odd dream, one he didn't recognize at first. Everything was warm and soft. Calm in a way he wasn't used to. There were no ominous sounds lurking in the shadows, no scent of blood in the air-- and the weight that rested against him wasn't the crushing pressure he'd come to expect from fallen rubble. It was comfortable and familiar. Safe. And when he shifted closer to try and bury himself against it, he was met with sleepy purr that made his heart stutter happily in his chest.
He didn't have to open his eyes to know who it was. It was just one of those things you knew when you were dreaming– the same way he knew he was in warriors den instead of his own nest, and that it was well past sun-up. So many wrong things that he would never allow to happen, and it felt perfectly normal, as if he'd spent every day of his life right there wrapped up with blue eyes and chocolate fur.
Maybe he had.
Maybe it was everything else that had been the bad dream.
~~~~~~~~~

When Ghost jolted awake shortly after, it wasn't because his dreams had turned bloody on him. Instead, it was the confusion of turning over in his nest to seek out that familiar warmth, only to find it gone. Just a cold, empty space that had sent him bolting upward in a disoriented panic, caught in a space that was wrongwrongwrong. His sleep-adled brain was still searching for Thunders nest in the warrior den, for blue eyes and soothing scent.

But the walls were too narrow in here. And the moss nest beneath him felt cold and smelled only like Ghoststrike himself.

Reality didn't take long to set in,

His surroundings came back to him after a moment, but that dose of reality didn't help much. The dream had felt so unmooringly real that his brain was having issues catching up and discerning which was which. He still felt like he'd lost something he would never get back, could feel a part of himself mourning for a life that was never real to begin with, wanting to go back. He could barely breathe with how heavy it sat in his chest, as if this was the wrong one and he was still meant to be back there.

Stars, was this even real? Or was this the dream?

Large, bone-marked paws carried him outside, needing some air. He could see his breath as he stepped out into camp, but he couldn't feel the cold with how his skin was vibrating. Couldn't feel much of anything beyond the pounding of his own heart and the sick feeling in his stomach telling him he'd lost the only glimpse of happiness he'd ever see.

He turned and made for the path out of camp, slipping up and out of the ravine without so much as looking to see who might have been watching.

OOC-- Hopekits question has unlocked a new kind of 'nightmare' for Ghost. Enjoy the softness while his fucked up brain struggles to determine what's real and what isn't. @THUNDERFLASH

Funny how coincidences worked, really.

Thunderflash had only just gotten up to make dirt in the middle of the night, murmuring quietly apologies to anyone he woke up by moving out of the warrior's den that late into the evening, only to catch sight of dark moving against dark. Honestly, if he didn't know that body shape and mannerisms and stride by heart, sight and sound, he wouldn't have known who it was. Thunderflash blinked once, recognizing the movement as far more hurried then normal. He glances back towards camp, shakes off any sleep that remained, cursed the cold once, then followed in the pawsteps of his... friend.

Hopekit's words rung in his ears. Kits. The two of them? Ghoststrike didn't like him like that- and Thunderflash seriously needed to get that aspect of his brain under control. He thinks of Dewshine and Copperstorm briefly, and swallows any kind of following thoughts down. Lighter paws press against ravine dirt. His mouth is gently parted, inhaling the scent of his friend as he moved, Ghoststrike's path easy to follow into the darkened forward. Any camp guard he met with a dazzling smile and a need for a walk late at night, and was brushed off considering who had just stalked by.

".. Ghost." He calls, a low hiss really, into the forest as he moves to catch up. He can barely see where he's going, paws brushing against semi-familiar roots. "Where are y' goin'? Wrong time o' night fer a run, y'ken." Thunderflash calls, vision shifting left and right.

I WONT SMILE, BUT I'LL SHOW YOU MY TEETH

The hiss of his name didn't startle him, but it landed sharp against his ears all the same. Ghoststrike slowed, breath puffing out in a low, controlled cloud that curled toward the canopy like smoke from a snuffed flame. He didn't stop completely– just shifted his pace from a predators stalk to something more casual. Like he'd just been stretching his legs instead of chasing the fading ghosts of a dream like it was something he could sink his claws into.

He didn't need to look to know who it was. That voice, those pawsteps– they could only belong to one cat.

He didn't turn right away, tried to ground himself in the way the wind slid through his fur, tugging at old scars and the edges of his torn ear. He allowed himself a single moment-just one- before exhaling slow and low, like a hound reluctantly letting go of a scent.

Only then did he glance in the others direction.

Thunderflash was padding closer, a dark shadow amongst an even darker backdrop as the branches of the canopy curled together to ward off the moons light. Even in the dim, their figure was unmistakable. The slope of their shoulders, the way their footsteps fell on the frost-bitten earth. Ghost didn't need to see the details to know who it was.

"Could ask you the same." he replied, voice low and flat with the leftover hoarsness of sleep still clinging to the edges. "Thought lurking in the shadows was my thing."

It wasn't a lie, not really. He just didn't have the words for the way his lungs felt too full and too empty all at once, or how the feeling of his nest had been *wrong* because his brain was still playing 'catch up' from the pretty little picture it'd painted itself.

He finally glanced over, amber eyes catching on a silver gleam of moonlight streaked across Thunder's fur. The sight scraped at something raw in his chest. That stupid, soft dream still clung to him like spiderwebs in his fur- warmth in a shared nest, the rumble of a purr against his ribs, a name spoken without fear.

And then he'd woken up to nothing.

His gaze flicked away again, sharp and unreadable. He scuffed a paw against the dirt like he'd spotted something in the ground. Maybe he had. A beat of silence passed, the woods around them shifting with a distant owl call. Ghost let it stretch, then, a shrug. Barely more than a twitch of his shoulder.

"Just needed air," he said again, quieter this time, like he was trying to convince himself too. "Couldn't sleep."

He didn't offer more. Not about the ache in his chest, or the way he'd bolted like a cat mourning something real. Not about the way waking up had hurt worse than any nightmare ever had. He didn't know how to say that out loud- not without handing over something too easily used against him.
