The ocean is in my soul,
And it's pulling me back to shore.
I'm letting go of the weight that's dragging me down.

.

Her wee guppies... Stars above, they were growing so big now. Soon she would have to let them spread their wings and find their own place in the world, just as she had with her children before. Even if some had been lost to her. A breath caught in her throat as her thoughts dipped toward Adder. She wanted him to meet his brood... To know them the way Crescentmoon had known him, the way she had known him. She wanted her babies to see the love and strength he carried. But... No. She would not sink herself in sadness. Not while her living treasures needed her.

Wavesong shook her head and lifted her chin with a bright smile, leaning forward to let her gaze sweep over each of her kits. Oh, how proud they made her. " Alright, ye wee rascals. Yer growin' big an' strong, so let's see if ye still remember what ma's been teachin' ye. I'mma be repeatin' it again, aye? " A glimmer of playful challenge danced in her sea-blue eyes. " Rule number one: Don't go near th'water alone. Th'river's a friend, but she's a wild one too. Respect her. An' always have a buddy with ye. " Her tone sharpened just a little as she cast a pointed look toward the troublemakers who knew exactly who they were.

" Rule number two: If somethin' hurts, ye tell me straight away. No hidin' wounds, no coughin' into yer tail. Mama can't fix what she doesn't know about. " She tucked her paws beneath her, fluffing up against the chilly wind sweeping camp. " Rule number three: No wanderin' beyond camp without a warrior. " Her voice softened, a tremor of worry under the motherly firm. " Adventure may be fun, until somethin' dangerous comes stalkin' yer path. "

Finally, she gave each of them a warm, lingering look. " And remember, ye treat every cat with respect... Until they show they don't deserve it. " There was steel behind the softness in her tone. Wavesong let silence settle just a moment, pride swelling in her chest as she watched their ears perk and tails twitch. " Now then... " she purred, eyes bright with challenge. " Which o' ye clever guppies can tell me what I just said? "

RIVERCLAN KIT
SPEECH | THOUGHTS | PHYSICAL

PENNED BY PLOT

Dawnkit wasn't one of Wavesong's wee guppies, but the caregiver had always been nice to Mama and helped him and Bravekit out when they needed it. All her kits were older than him and Bravekit too, but Dawnkit didn't really care much - he liked hanging out with them, and more importantly, he liked listening to Wavesong's voice. It was comforting, and so when he heard her begin to give her children a little speech on safety, he crept to the edge of his nest and peered out, little ears wiggling as he watched and listened.

He rested his chin on his paws as he poked over the edge, nodding along to each point.

"River... friend," he murmured under his breath. "Wild friend." Like Jasperkit or Pricklekit, maybe? He considered all the kits in the nursery to be his friends, regardless of what they may think of the little tag-along.

"Mama... fix." This one was easy. Why wouldn't he try and make sure Mama knew if something was wrong?

"Wanderin'... warrior." Now he was beginning to get a bit turned around. Did warriors wander? Would Mama go wandering? He shrank back a little. If Mama went wandering, he'd want to go with her.

"Re... respect," he murmured finally. Not sure what that one was, but it seemed really important. Maybe he'd ask Mama, or one of Wavesong's guppies, once they'd finished their lesson.

—————————————— All I wanted was to be seen, and to see. ✦

Salmonkit was busying himself with one of his favourite stones, carefully polishing the surface to make it shine. He looked forward to his apprenticeship, to get the chance to find shinier, better treasures, there beneath the surface of the water. He was not to go by the water alone, and even with Galerunner there, he was apprehensive to delve into the frigid water. There would be time to fish for treasures; for now, he would treasure what he already had.

Golden eyes peeked up to see his mother, a small smile landed across his maw. Though he tilted his head with a curious glint, a challenge?

The chimaera sat before his mother, peering at Dawnkit, who watched just as curiously at the lesson his Mama was giving to the school of guppies. For what little he had experienced, there were times he knew of to memorise Wavesong's rules.

"Be aware of the water, it's safer with a warrior nearby." Thunderpaw hadn't been so safe. It was an accident, but it was one Salmonkit wasn't ever going to repeat. "Hiding wounds makes them fester, it'll make it worse hiding until it's impossible to hide." Another mistake of the cinnamon molly, he'd seen her wincing with her ears. It was something he had asked Galerunner about, something about the anatomy of curled ears.

The next rule made Salmonkit huff a little. "Do not wander from camp alone, little guppies are easy pickings for the osprey." His tail flickered; it wasn't as if it were an issue for him. Not now that Gale had earned its warrior name, anything he wanted to do, he could at Galerunner's agreement. "Respect is earned, but should be mutual. Otherwise, disrespect is not tolerated." Salmonkit could not see the face of the tom that came to mind as he spoke those final words, something mottled of browns and sharp eyes.

Every word that rolled from Salmonkit's maw was deliberate, careful. Compared to when he had first begun to talk, the slipping of consonants and the accent he began to mimic from his mother waned as he grew. It was more and more evident who the little kitten was replicating in his intonation and speech, but that was something the kitten took pride in.

He looked up, expectantly, tilting his head slightly to his mother, awaiting her reply. But Dawnkit's reply made him turn and nod slightly. "Mmhm, that sounds right." He spoke with confidence, but not certainty. He wasn't going to try and outsmart his mother, wanting her confirmation first.

Drizzlepaw

.

While Drizzlepaw was not a kitten anymore and certainly not one of Wavesong's, purr knew there was a lot to learn about clan life that purr did not know yet. And so purr listened as the queen talked to the kits about the rules.

Don't go near the water alone - Drizzlepaw supposed this made sense, especially for those not yet having learned how to swim. Drizzlepaw wasn't afraid of the water, but to say he knew how to swim would probably be an exaggaration. He noted that he should probably ask someone to teach him, at least the basics.

If something hurts, you tell me right away - Drizzlepaw flicked his ears, slightly ashamed of listening in. Well, he certainly wouldn't bother the queen who had her own children to worry about, but he recalled hearing something about a medicine cat? He would need to introduce himsef, but it was good to know that there were others in the clan willing to help, shall anything go wrong. Even the minor things.

No wandering beyond camp without a warrior - now this one, the young cat wasn't too sure about. Was that a rule for kits or for purr as well? He saw the apprentices outside camp, he had met them, but they always had a patrol or a warrior with them. Was that something he should figure out? He looked at Wavesong questioningly, ready to ask when she finished listing the rules. It would be good to know whether he was allowed out by himself or not - not that he minded either option, especially with Thunderpaw to receive her warrior name soon.

Drizzlepaw didn't repeat the rules aloud, for it was for the kits to answer, but purr repeated the rules in purrs head a few times, just to really get the hang of them. Clan life was so interesting! And it wasn't like the rules were without reason either...

Cloudkit
status: calm
She'd been here for many moons now. The time of the before nothing but a distant memory in her mind. But she was bigger now. Not large, never large, she would always be small in stature she was slowly realizing by comparing herself to others. But she was definitely larger than some of the kits and she had heard the whispered words. Her and her siblings would be leaving the nursery soon. Apprentices they said. She didn't question it much. Today she sat on the edges of the group, just listening in idle curiosity as Wavesong spoke to her own kits about things. Things they should remember. Her head tilts curiously as Dawnkit speaks in that stilted kit way that she used to speak in, short sentences, trying to gather some meaning in the words she had spoken. She turns to Salmonkit who speaks far more clearly, repeating the rules succinctly and clear.

Cloudkit blinks slowly and lowers herself to the ground, her eyes falling half lidded. "And don't fall into woven baskets neither. They'll carry you far and away if you do." It's how her and her siblings had ended up in Riverclan after all. Being swept by the tide away from their home to this new strange place that is now her home. This Riverclan. Granted she hadn't fallen into the basket, having been placed there instead but the lesson was there all the same. Don't fall into strange baskets or you'll end up carried away by the fierceness of the river. Separated from everything you had known or will ever known to someplace wholly new and strange. A fascinating tale all things considered though.

You wanna stay alive, better do what you can

DUNKIT ─── .✦Riverclan | Kit

Dunkit sat a ways away from everyone, but close enough to be within earshot of the caregiver and her kits. They knew eavesdropping wasn't polite, but... surely it wouldn't be bad to listen in on some good lessons. Besides, they didn't have much else to do--both their siblings were out and about doing... something or another. Dunkit preferred it in the den anyway, mostly alone with their thoughts and surrounded by the comfort of others not bothering them. Learning something passively from one of the other caregivers was fine, surely.

1. Don't go near the river alone. -- I wasn't plannin' on ever doing that but Sleetkit might need the reminder... If any of us think of the river as a friend, is her. She'd prolly try an make best friends with the water even while it washed her away! They made a note to relay that to their sister when next they see her.
2. Tell someone if you're sick or injured. -- Well, this one was definitely more applicable to them. I hate bein' a bother an' talkin'... but I guess if I don't get seen to right away I'd only become even more of a burden. N' then I'd have to talk even more!
3. Don't go outside the camp without a warrior guide. -- 'M sure Sapkit doesn't need to be told that but... He sure does think himself grown enough to be on his own. Still, better tell 'em just to be safe.
4. Respect everyone, so long as they respect you. -- I jus' hope everyone else will do the same... It'd be nicer everywhere if they did.

A good set of rules to abide by. Dunkit turned their head to Dawnkit and Salmonkit as they repeated their caregiver's words back to her. Seems like they got it.

Silence speaks loudest

"Speech" || Thoughts

The ocean is in my soul,
And it's pulling me back to shore.
I'm letting go of the weight that's dragging me down.

.

Her ear twitched as she glanced over at little Dawnkit, who had managed, surprisingly, to sit through most of the rules she'd been laying out for her own brood. The sight softened her, a warm smile flickering across her features as she dipped her head fondly to the young kit before turning her attention back to her children. Salmonkit spoke up first, bright and earnest. He listed the rule perfectly, and pride curled warmly through her chest. " Well said, guppy. Ye got a fine head on yer shoulders, aye? " she purred, eyes sparkling. She turned again when she noticed another newcomer peeking in on the little lesson, giving them a welcoming smile before Cloudkit added his own rule, something about not falling out of woven baskets.

A tremor rippled through her at that, an image of a different basket, a different loss, but she kept her smile steady and nodded. " Aye. Best not t'fall outta baskets either. " she chuckled softly, pushing the ache down with a practiced breath. She straightened, clearing her throat. " Right then. Movin' on. " Rule number four, once. But now... Now it had become rule number five.

" Ye don't kill another cat. " she said, tone gentle but firm as water-worn stone. " Not unless there's truly no other path left. Not unless ye fought through every choice, every chance, an' yer life still hangs on the edge o' somethin' sharp. " Her gaze lingered on each of her kits in turn, warmth and worry braided together. One more moon. Just one, and they'd be out there in the world without her shadow to soften the blows.

[color=dodgerblue" Honesty. Aye, it keeps us afloat. Even when it stings worse than a thorn in the pad. Lies sink faster than stones, wee ones. "[/color] she went on, an ear flicking with the weight of memories. She tapped her fluffy tail lightly across their tiny paws. " Continuin' on, ye protect th'smaller paws. If someone's weak or scared, ye stand with'm, not over'm. Don't let me ever catch sight o' any o' ye bullyin' anyone, understand? " Her eyes softened even further as she looked over the cluster of guppies gathered around her, her own, and the curious outsiders drawn in like minnows to a current.

" Family is chosen as much as born. Blood makes kin, aye... But love makes a family. Treat those who stand by ye as such. " She drew a slow breath, letting the warmth of the moment settle. " Not done yet. " she murmured, smiling gently. " But am I clear so far, my lil' hearts? "

Dawnkit nodded along as the rules became more complex, listing concepts and words he'd not yet become familiar with. What was kill? Or bullying?

Love, though, that was one that he knew very well. Momma loved him, and Bravekit loved him, and he loved them! And he loved Wavesong too, for being so nice and teaching them so much, and the other kits for being nice and friends and...

Oh, he'd gotten too in his own head, hadn't he? He hadn't even remembered which rules he wanted to ask more about. Floundering, he looked to the other kits to see if they would repeat them.
