AND I AM SORRY MY CONSCIENCE CALLED IN SICK AGAIN

______________________________________________________________________

Morning had barely settled over the pocosin when Wolfpack decided that he'd had enough. Not of the constant dampness, the bite of insects, or the lack of prey– but with Flamerunner.

He'd watched the flame-point tom long enough to know he wasn't useless– far from it in fact. Quick on his feet, agile, and with enough natural skill to rival any of Shadowclans better hunters, it made it an even worse offence that they chose to do as little as possible. The younger tom only seemed interested in trying to catch the eyes of his fellow clanmates, and unfortunately for him, he'd succeeded in catching those of the deputy.

It was funny. Had the pair of them been loners, Wolf wouldn't have given to flicks of his tail what the other did with their day. Might even allow himself time to indulge in their shameless flirtation. But this was Shadowclan, and Wolfpack wasn't about to let a cat that talented waste their time loading around camp winking as passing cats when there were borders to mark and prey to chase.

So, here they were.

Wolfpack stood before the ginger cat with a look that was almost asking to be tested, to give him a reason. While he'd been doing his best to reign in his more savage tactics, he wasn't above reminding a cat that there was no room for leeches and freeloaders here. Any cat that wished to call themselves Shadowclan had to pull their weight in some capacity– that, or they had to have the protection of someone who would do it for them.

And the last time he'd checked, nobody was out there picking up Flamerunners share of the work for him.

"Why are you back before the rest of your patrol? I sent you to hunt in Zone 3, you shouldn't be back for another hour at least." the mottled cat demanded, not looking impressed. With the way food was running they needed as many paws working together as they could get. If Flamerunner thought he was going to share in the meal brought back, he was sorely mistaken. "In fact, I can't remember the last time you've put in a proper days work. I think it's time to change that."

And if the warrior didn't like it, he was happy to remind them where the border was.

"Starting today, you'll be shadowing me full-time. Deputies orders."

  • ooc : — A little plot between me and Lion, where Flamerunner gets called out for being lazy and has to shadow Wolf for the next little bit :) Please wait for @Flamerunner to post first!

If Flamerunner was being honest, he hadn't expected to be found so quickly. Yes, yes, he was supposed to be with a hunting patrol right now, but he'd done his share! He'd caught something, dropped it neatly on the pile, and then found a nice spot to sunbathe in for as much as that was possible this late in the season. He wasn't expected to be hunting twenty-four-seven, right? Surely even the deputy believed in a little downtime. Tucked away in one of the pocosin's rare patches of sunlight, the flame point sprawled on his side like a king on a mossy throne. His tail flicked lazily every so often, eyes half-lidded, the faint warmth sinking into his fur. It wasn't much, leaffall's sun was weak at best... But it was warmth all the same, and he wasn't about to waste it. His mind was just starting to drift when a shadow fell over him.

And not the nice kind. Ah... foxdung.

Cracking open one eye, Flamerunner blinked up at the mottled tom looming above him, the sunlight now fully blocked. Wolfpack's expression was that special kind of unimpressed, the look that made apprentices stammer and warriors suddenly remember urgent duties elsewhere. Flamerunner, however, only offered a slow, sleepy grin. " Wolfpack... " he purred, voice low and lazy. " You're blotting out my sunshine, big guy. That's cruel, even for you. " He stretched with a languid roll of his shoulders, jaws parting in a wide yawn before he finally pushed himself upright. His fur was ruffled from sleep, but he didn't bother to fix it, just gave himself a half-hearted shake and blinked up at the deputy with drowsy amusement.

" Back before the rest of my patrol? " he echoed, tilting his head with feigned innocence. " Well, yeah. I figured they could handle the hunting part after my first catch. I was just making sure no predators snuck in from the sunning spots. " A beat passed, followed by a crooked grin. " You know me, all about safety and strategy. " The look Wolfpack gave him said he wasn't buying a single word of it.

When the deputy laid down his verdict, Flamerunner's ears twitched. " Shadowing you? " he repeated, blinking as if he'd misheard. " Like... all the time? No naps, no breaks, like an apprentice...? " he groaned, shoulders slumping dramatically. " Oh, come on, Wolfy. You're killing me here. I mean, I'm flattered and all, but if you wanted to spend more time with me, you could've just said so. " The grin returned, bright and cheeky as ever, but there was a flicker of reluctant acceptance behind it now.

He sighed, casting one last wistful glance toward his sun patch before finally meeting Wolfpack's gaze. " Alright, alright. Deputies' orders. I'll tag along. But if I start working too hard, don't get jealous when everyone starts calling me deputy, yeah? "
