Moonlight grinned grimly through the fog-stricken clouds, with only a mere sliver of a shadow to fall behind its light. Winter's chill had overtaken Riverclan's territory, a thin layer of frost lying haphazardly along every dip and crest. Despite the biting cold, a certain pitch-coated tomcat prowled through the shadows, only stopping once war-worn paws reached the mirror of the stream. Whalewatcher did not dare look at himself, did not glare at the ignominy that had consumed every part of him. He only stood upon one of the icy surfaces of the many Sunningrocks, with nary a peep in the night, as if the world lie hushed by some unimaginably vast veil of silence. The man preferred it this way, for quietude let more room within his mind to think. And think he did, thinking until the creator would be devoured by his own ideas. That was, until the creak of roughage underfoot made his head snap too-quickly towards it. Molten-gold eyes rose slowly to meet the object of the noise, though Whalewatcher did not speak to her, as though his adorations and obsessions had stolen every breath other than the ones that maintained the machine. He knew her, like he knew the rest of his clanmates. Frigidsnap, sibling to the deputy. Not that such a connection made any difference to him. Whalewatcher had little use for the trappings of power and authority.
