THE RIFF-RAFF⤨​

A gang of misfits and unsavoury types - from the bored, to the rebellious, to the unapologetically wicked.

The Riff-Raff are a loose assortment of strays that have coalesced to terrorise their small portion of twolegplace, and soon the broader wilderness the town is nestled within. They are motivated by the pursuit of glory, tribute from others, and their superiority over the kibble-crunching kittypets and those barbarians off in the forest. Any cat worth their claws knows to stay well out of their turf - even if that turf seems to reach farther and farther each moon that passes. These days, the forest is in their sights.

Since the members of the Riff-Raff are mostly comprised of a revolving door of individuals that come and go, there is a very broad variety in both their skills and competency. A defining trait, however, is the clique's fondness for bullying, trouble-making, and a penchant to flaunt their strength where applicable. Those that aren't local strays, or otherwise having parted from a larger group (like the nearby colony, for instance), have left their homes due to abuse, neglect, or sheer boredom and the need to seek a fresh challenge.



The social structure within the Riff-Raff largely adheres to a chain-of-command. A pyramid of infamous rascals, and at the tippity top is Leroy. He and his motley crew thrive on fear and reputation, and rumours of their most ruthless deeds are the glue that holds the gang's authority together.

Leroy's band of misfits isn't known for any kind of subtlety, nor their discretion. For instance, the Riff-Raff's favoured punishment for unruly types is to toss them to the junkyard dogs - a practice sometimes referred to as "dinner service".

(That, obviously, is just a rumour, one that was carefully engineered to set everyone on edge. Couldn't have happened. Right?)

THEIR TURF
In twolegplace, Leroy's hooligans are at their best where no one wants them. At night, they rule the paved pathways leading to twoleg nests, lounging in empty lots and digging through bins in search of treasures or treats. They keep clear of dogs and raccoons, but will not hesitate to hassle other cats - kittypet or otherwise. Those cats know better than to let the Riff-Raff cross their path. When daylight breaks, the gang usually has the good sense to retreat back to a particular alley (known simply as 'home') and sleep the day away - but every now and then they may stir up trouble when someone catches their ire, no matter how public or brazen.

By this point in time, the kittypets and loners of the twolegplace are starting to wise up; the complacent or naïve ones have had the fear smacked into them, and the smart ones have found themselves safer lodging or safety through tribute. There are only so many victims to shake down in town. Only so much fun to be had, too. Leroy's getting restless, and so are his goons.

When the Riff-Raff learns of some sorta civil war happening among the barbarians, well, they'll figure that's an open invitation to have a poke around and see what spoils await. New places to explore. New folks to rob. New lands to conquer. Sounds like a fun time all around.



THEIR VIBES
↠ Given that the gang are a bunch of rowdy and self-proclaimed rascals, their speech and mannerisms are reminiscient of Old West cowboys and old-timey gangsters, or an odd mixture of both.
↠ You know how sometimes a group of thugs in a story are kind of silly and incompetent, but in the same story are somehow competent enough to pose a serious threat? Yeah, that's the sort of energy the Riff-Raff exude, thanks to their disorganised structure, lack of restraint, and overall hard-headedness.
↠ Infighting is not uncommon among the gang. Usually it's kept to spats, petty grievances, and bouts of wrestling to release the tension. However, when Leroy is around to keep his eye on the cats under his purview, stepping a paw out of line can incur a lot worse than a dirty look.
↠ To join the Riff-Raff, a character will have had to impress a member of the group in some way. It's an invitation-only club, but chances are an opportunity will present itself eventually, given the gang's loose hierarchy and chaotic behaviour.
↠ For characters that were backwritten in, the procedure was the same: impress, and be vouched for. The recommendation must come from another gang member in good standing, and ultimately requires approval from Leroy. It's rumoured that Leroy prefers larger, scarred, or otherwise mean-looking cats, but anyone who is truly tenacious will be given an equal shot at glory.
↠ Naive or weak-looking cats who want to prove their claws would do well in stealing something of value. Tougher or bruiser-looking sorts might gain recognition in a brawl against an existing member, or a passerby who caught their eye.
↠ Cats who want to join the Riff-Raff that aren't particularly skilled at fighting, thievery, or roughhousing may end up serving as an errand-runner or as fodder.

A CAT IN THE RIFF-RAFF...
...usually hails from the twolegplace, although loners from far-beyond lands and runaway colony cats aren't unheard of.
...is in it for the action. Glory. Reputation. Excitement. A spot of trouble. They're often selfish or greedy, as well.
...can range from the thick-skulled and hot-headed to the sly, cool-headed, and cold-blooded.
...almost exclusively refers to colony/clan cats as "barbarians".
...doesn't hold a high opinion of any domesticated cat, particularly kittypets. They're stuck-up prissies, and got no brains of their own.
...treats anything that comes out of Leroy's maw as gospel. Anything. Even if it contradicts the last thing that was said, or common sense.
...must focus on growing their infamy, or else they risk becoming irrelevant, and therefore forgotten and unwanted.
...holds 'dinner service' in high regard as an effective threat, even though no one has ever seen or witnessed one actually being performed.
...must be at least 12 moons in age.



THEIR RANKS

(Note: These ranks are in no way fixed or universally applied, like clan HPs. They are rather a rough guide on what an individual's role and pecking order is in relation to the gang.)


HEAD HONCHO: Only the top cat can stake their claim to the title of head honcho. That position currently belongs to Leroy, who will likely take it to the grave.
RIGHT PAW: A coveted position among the Riff-Raff, whoever is the right paw of the honcho is often held in regard as the second in command.
TRUSTY: Usually the longest-standing members of the Riff-Raff are the trusties, having earned their stripes and keep for longer than the rabble.
BRUISER: Big, strong, and tough to boot, bruisers are the most physically imposing cats in the gang. Their job is to beat up who needs beating up, and to stand guard over stuff that matters.
SNEAK-THIEF: On the opposite end of the spectrum, sneak-thieves are agile, cunning, and are tasked with stealing anything that isn't bolted down. They may double as scouts and lookouts, too.
GOON: A rank and file cat, goons haven't yet defined themselves as bruisers or sneak-thieves, and will generally assist with whatever tasks are at paw in a pinch.
LOOSE CANNON: Loose cannons are trouble. Unpredictable. Explosive. They are simultaneously on the brink of being kicked out of the Riff-Raff or moving higher in the ranks, depending on their ability to maintain order in chaos.
ERRAND-RUNNER: Losers. You ain't gonna make it big with the Riff-Raff as a glorified messenger cat. But at least you're still in the gang, for now.
FODDER: Fools on the chopping block, fodder isn't really in the gang at all. They're tolerated to hang around, but their presence is barely acknowledged. May end up as the punchline of a joke, the target of a prank, or the subject of a cruel lesson.

THEIR EASY-TO-FOLLOW RULES
1. Listen to Leroy. Always.
2. Do not question Leroy. Never.
3. Protect what's yours, and the gang's.
4. Take what doesn't belong to the gang, and make it the gang's.
5. Steal and bully whoever you want, whenever and wherever you want, so long as they're not with the Riff-Raff.
6. Dinner service is always a mess-up away.



THE ULTIMATE GOAL...
...of the Riff-Raff is to serve as an opposing outside force to the clans in their early days. They will be an obstacle and source of conflict that will help clans assert their borders and set boundaries in a direct way. A little bit of conflict makes a fictional world go 'round, after all.

They will start small, merely an irritant and localised annoyance. As the moons pass and the cats in the gang gain more and more notoriety, the scope of their actions will broaden, and the degree of their impact will worsen, until their spectacular crash and burn. This is a pre-determined path that awaits them, although there isn't anything planned beyond that. It'll develop over time.

If you ever plan for your character from the Riff-Raff to potentially join a clan (once they are around), be sure to communicate with the respective clan leaders about their past, and the extent of their actions while in the gang. If it's mutually agreed upon, it'd be a nice bit of world-building to have a few converts to help diversify the clans a little, and allow a bad cat the chance to have a second go at things.

(A little different than the IC rules above; be sure to follow these, so that things remain fluid and fair for everyone - inside the Riff-Raff and out!)

1. The Riff-Raff are prone to wander from place to place. From Twolegplace, to Horseplace, to the Shipyard, to the colony's/clans' territories. But, it would not make sense for members of the gang to be everywhere at once! For the sake of continuity, check in with me beforehand (either on-site, or in Discord) if you'd like to make a thread / reply to a thread where Y/C is off elsewhere.

2. Branching off the above rule... if a thread isn't posted by a member of the Riff-Raff, and it's possible that Y/C will derail the ongoing plot through aggression or violence, you must check in with the thread's OP before replying. It wouldn't be fair for anybody on Purrgatory if every thread ended in a gang ambush!

3. You are encouraged as gang members to reach out to Loners, Rogues, Ship Cats, and Barn Cats and plot with them! Please, don't read the first two rules as 'everything must be approved in advance', because there also isn't any fun in that.

4. Characters should only be going to colony/clan territories when in a group. The 'barbarian lands' are known to be potentially dangerous, after all. But, by all means, if your character is interested in causing a little trouble elsewhere, reach out to me and I'll see that it is arranged >:^].

5. It would be most helpful if every character abided by Leroy and his whims, at least on the surface. Remember, this is a group that is built on infamy and reputation! For a character to speak out publicly, it may end up with them being ostracised or thrust into harm's way as punishment.

6. Lastly, I would like to reiterate, the Riff-Raff is fun before it is cruel! It isn't fun from an OOC standpoint to be totally unforgiving to others. This is RP, after all, and I'd like this group to have a presence that is happily tolerated and not begrudgingly tolerated.

Seeking fortune, admirers, and most of all, fame and reputation, she's assimilated quite well into the group, being a learned scholar of bullying, gossiping, and generally being a mean-girl and showoff since her youth. Her proficiency in stealing and tracking means she recently graduated from goon to sneak-thief.
APPEARANCE AND PERSONALITY: A small, pretty black-and-white she-cat with blue & brown eyes, luxuriant fur, and mottled skin (ref).

Ophelia is at first glance a vapid, vain mean-girl of the high-school variety, who seems to not have a whole lot going on between the ears. She's polite on the surface level but has a bit of a mouth on her that tends to act up at the worst times, although her sweet face and ability to instantly turn on the charm has gotten her out of as many scrapes as her mouth gets her into. She takes great pride in stealing above all else, with bullying, gossiping, and fighting competing for a close second. Theft is her pride and joy, and she will steal just about anything that isn't tied down, including her fellows' things, which has gotten her into a couple petty spats since she joined. She listens to Leroy and anyone who outranks her, but mostly just because everyone else does.

At a deeper level, Ophelia is the avoidant sort, and behaves the way she does partly because it's her nature and partly to keep others who might have her best interests in mind away. Being bitchy and acting dumb has yet to fail her in this aspect, and so she hasn't changed her behavior for the better at all, although she does contain the potential for improvement if the right pressures were applied. She does have her appealing qualities; namely, to her "in-group" (at the moment, the Riff-Raff), she can be as sweet, playful, and sassy as she is petty and cruel. She has a habit for ferreting out the gloomy loner types and pestering them nonstop in an effort to "help them make some friends".
STRENGTHS: Stealing, tracking, and fighting. Despite her size, Ophelia is the scrappy sort who cut her claws on combat from an early age. Stealing is her passion and her greatest proficiency, but she's also sharp-eyed and makes a pretty solid scout.

Joined because of his father, Abrum. He isn't all quite sure why he sticks around with the Riff-Raff, but he would rather stay with a group of cats he did know rather than to risk it with the forest cats. He doesn't really stand out much from the others, preferring to be lowkey in the shadow of his brutal pops.
APPEARANCE AND PERSONALITY:
Cain is a tad larger in size than an average cat his age. A dark, muddy brown takes up most of his fur, tinged with a lighter brown towards his underbelly and his maw. Black marbling inch around his legs and torso, imitating cracks in sedimentary stones that have been withered at for countless moons. Around his neck and the back of his head remains a mane of coal-black fur, usually fluffed up due to the air or caked with leaves, sticks, and whatnot. His eyes are a deep, cold amber.

Cain doesn't consider himself a good guy, but nor does he really want to believe himself to be someone antagonistic. Due to his past and all the things he has done, he has made a better effort to be more intentional to help those around him, whether it be the elderly or the newborns, wounded comrades or bumbling younglings. He doesn't mind being around his comrades, even if he doesn't say much when he actually is around others, but sometimes, loneliness is the coat he bears better. He carries a kind heart within his chest, one that he often jokes to himself that he got from his loving mother. He has a soft spot for those around them that only grows deeper the more he grows a bond with someone.

Though he may appear to be someone cold-hearted and stoic, he actually opens himself up to others fairly easily, albeit with much resistance. He would willingly put himself in an uncomfortable situation just to make someone else comfortable… and usually that is by speaking to someone, easing nerves when he, too, is nervous, or even doing a chore that he himself wouldn't want to do. If anyone came to him with a favor, especially those darn adorable kits, he would accept doing the favor without any hesitation.

Within his mind still lies a ferocious beast, unfortunately. He finds trouble sleeping or napping when his mind fills with regrets, laments, memories of days of old. He pushes himself to the brink of exhaustion whenever he can, both in part because of old habits and of what he has done to himself. He doesn't believe he is worthy of the divine resting place that others might believe in--he has done far too many bad things in order to ever gain repentance.
STRENGTHS:
★ He shows the potential to be an incredibly skilled fighter. He knows how to play dirty in a spar and pinpoints an enemy's weak spots so that he can win quickly and easily--he's not a fan of dragging fights.

★ Whenever he meets someone new or stumbles upon an outsider, he is able to judge their character fairly accurately. He knows when someone's intentions are good, or if someone means harm towards his comrades.

★ He can navigate very well and has a good memory of the places he has been and the experiences he has seen. Does he love having this talent all the time, however? Who's to say, really…

AT A GLANCE BACKSTORY / WHY THEY'RE WITH THE RIFF-RAFF: he came from nowhere at all, living his life on the edge with no twolegs or other cats to care for him or for him to care about. that is, until he met Cheese, who seemed to want to explore the world, more than what his twolegs had to offer him, and after a short time, they became mates and Cheese agreed to follow Chili. there's nothing that get's Chili's blood pumping like power in your paws and feeling fur beneath your claws, and when he heard about a gang of cats forming near twolegplace, he jumped at the opportunity to be one of its forming members. also he has a Brooklyn accent and talks like a mobster. "eyy, this is our toif get'cha tail outta hea!!"

Thus started the rumors from Latte of the gang's reputation after hearing mention of their supposed 'dinner service', gradually spinning tales of things the gang may or may not have actually done under Leroy's command. For cats outside the gang this served to make the gang seem far more dangerous, to the gang this may as well have been the best PR they'd possibly ever get. She was eventually tracked down and invited into the gang, and while she never gave a resounding 'yes' she does occasionally pass messages and the like along when asked- usually when given a rumor she hasn't heard yet in exchange.
APPEARANCE AND PERSONALITY: A large, green-eyed, brown and cream she cat, with a penchant for finding gossip and spreading rumors. She's not used to company and often prefers solitude unless she is watching the results of her rumormongering. More likely to use her size to get what she wants, whether this be food or information. Rarely hunts/scrounges for food and prefers to break into twoleg dens with cat doors to steal kittypet food as its the easiest and less labor intensive option. I'm looking to see if Quest fighting a dog and killing it may impress Leroy. He spent the longest portion of his life alone as a rogue with a deep embedded desire for revenge after he witnessed his mother and siblings killed by a dog at a young age. He's also a good rper :3. If so, Leroy will find himself his own Loyal dog. A vicious brute that does that's asked of him without asking questions or arguing. Need someone killed, he's on it without second thoughts? That cat thought they were best friends? Shouldn't have pissed Leroy off.

Quest prides himself in his fighting skills, often fighting dirty if it means he gets to win. He will fight to the death if the other does not back down, but how far hell go is unseen except by the scars that mar his own body. His hunting skills even are exceptional, he's survived this long on his own.

Quest does not understand emotions well, and the first known emotion besides a neutral toned character, is anger. He grows frustrated with those who cannot keep their head in the game, and often will turn to anger as well if they show signs of disloyalty. And if a trustee is not something Leroy sees in him, despite the loyalty that runs for him for 'saving' him from the streets, he could be a good bruiser.

Once upon a time, she was a show cat. A popular one at that. She was a spoiled thing, and being able to convince some suckers to get her things for some of her attention made life easier. Yet, eventually the life she lived began to bore her, and at a point, it was easier to get things that she wanted herself instead of depending on others (or so she says). She did small thievery here and there, but what got her under the riff-raffs eyes was her stealing a large roast bird from a brute when they least expected it (after doing some saccharine charming of hers). Since then, her goal has been to climb the ranks. It's kept her entertained, for now.
APPEARANCE AND PERSONALITY: [ lh silver cream ticked tabby ] given her heritage, Selma is a purebred somali, though her coloring is a soft cream that pales into a white. Her most striking feature is her eyes, a dark reddish copper which contrast greatly against her pale coloring. She is small and athletic, with a squirrel or fox-like bushy tail. She wears a black pearl collar, something from her past life and that she values deeply.
As for personality, Selma is a very cunning and manipulative cat. She naturally carries herself a saccharine allure, using pretty words and seemingly sweet gestures to get what she wants. She never has had any qualms on laying on the charm and offering words that simpering idiots want to hear if it means getting what she wants. Of course, if it's needed, she'll get her paws dirty and do it herself, but she has the most fun duping others into doing things for her. She can be very conniving if it means getting her way. AT A GLANCE BACKSTORY / WHY THEY'RE WITH THE RIFF-RAFF:
Joined because of brute strength and ruthlessness in battle, earning his way to join by fighting tooth and claw. He never seems to stop fighting, if he can help it.
APPEARANCE AND PERSONALITY:
Abrum is a fairly-large tom with a lean, well-muscled structure. He has thick fur that makes him appear bigger than average, particularly thicker around his neck like the mane of a ferocious lion. He has dark mottled spots decorating his pelt, contrasting well with his steely-black fur. His eyes are an unfeeling amber, and anyone would notice how his son's gaze matches his own, if not Abrum's being a bit more stern. Strangely enough, he has little scars--some say this makes him all talk and no bite, but those who have battled him have no more breath left to speak with.

Abrum carries himself well, cold-hearted and calculated with every step. He doesn't tread lightly when his honor and name come into the conversation--he is something to behold, someone to terrify others, and he will make sure to stun an entire clearing into silence with just a gaze. Anyone who encounters Abrum better watch their tongue and their claws, lest he give them a memory they will never, ever forget. There is no apparent kindness that lies in his heart, but when it is there, it is saved for someone who has earned his respect, his trust, and his unbridled emotions. No one has done that in seasons, however, and he doubts anyone will do so again.

He is prone to a short-temper and angry outbursts, in which he will become verbally out-of-control and physically violent. Snipping the incredibly thin chord that he has will cause irreparable damage, with him acting out and attacking whoever has caused him such powerful emotion. He will not stop until either his paws are soiled with the blood of the offender, or his rage is sated--whichever happens to come first.

In normal day-to-day interactions, he portrays apathy like a fine leather coat, wearing his unfeeling emotions with pride. He watches his comrades with indifference and chats in a way that every conversation is boring to him, and will bluntly mention how exhausted talking to a certain person is to their face. He carries no shame, no guilt, and cares little for redemption or retribution.
STRENGTHS:
★ After years of fighting anyone who he can get his paws on, his skill for fighting has become a level to which is hard to beat. His fighting skills are immaculate, without flaw, and every move he makes towards an opponent spells another step closer to their demise. No one wishes to be on the opposing side in a fight with him. His apathy for others makes him a ruthless killer. He won't think twice about slicing someone's throat open, even if they are much younger than him. There will be no hesitation for his glory.

★ Skillful lying techniques, from years of having to hide his true self in order to survive. He doesn't think twice about it, now, as he earns someone's trust through the way he speaks to them. A lulled ally may be good for him, is what he believes.

★ A phenomenal memory, in terms of conversations. He always remembers the small comments and secrets others tell him, as to better use it against them within the future.
WEAKNESSES:
𝕏 His pure rage may make him formidable, but it also makes him a bit blind and dumb. He often forgets himself through a powerful rage, and, due to focusing on the sole purpose of killing, he doesn't focus on how he should kill them. Battles with him enraged take longer and more energy for him, thus tiring his bones out easily.

𝕏 Because he isn't the best people-person, he lacks forming actual connections with others, save for the few he lets his inner feelings show to. Which, as of right now... is no one. He may have quick allies, but no friends make for a lonely tom.

AT A GLANCE BACKSTORY / WHY THEY'RE WITH THE RIFF-RAFF: Abandoned at a very young age, Swan learned quickly that she had to steal scraps if she wanted to survive. Once empathetic, she began to develop a cruel streak after she was tricked by a kittypet that had been helping her out, who seemingly randomly ordered her to never come see them again. She caught the interest of the Riff-Raff when she ended up stealing something that they had been planning to steal—and was subsequently invited to join, which she readily accepted. Now, eager for the community, shelter, and power over any 'worthlessly weak-hearted outsiders', she does her absolute best as a loyal member, terrorizing anyone she comes across.

In-group, she's a rather mild-mannered cat, friendly enough, but doesn't let anyone get too close—'community' may have been one of the reasons she joined, but she knows better than to feel she can trust anyone too intimately. Despite this, she still easily accepts orders from Leroy or anyone higher up than her without a second thought—their word is law, after all, and she'll listen to anything anyone who also thinks outsiders need to be put in their place says.
To outsiders, especially kittypets, her mild temperament suddenly becomes cold. Every word out of her mouth sounds conversational, but it's definitely layered with a mocking tone. Or is it their imagination? Before most can figure it out, Swan's already made off with whatever she wanted to nab from them. She takes great pleasure in chatting with those she frequently runs into, all with a disarming smile.

ALSO! I am ready to get the Riff-Raff's motor running. I'm going to put up a small list of OOC rules that I'd like y'all to follow, to make sure that things go smoothly on the RP side of things! Little things such as 'please for the love of God, do not derail every thread', stuff like that.

Once that's up, I'm going to throw up an open thread, tag all of you lovely people, and the show will officially be on the road!
