FALLING FOR THE PROMISE OF THE
EMPTINESS MACHINE

.

Twolegs had been more frequent in their territory as of late, generally being loud and scaring away all the land prey- Russetfall hated it. But she also knew that where there were twolegs more often than not there was easy food. Growing up in twolegplace had taught her that much. When prey was scarce or just plain difficult to catch the twoleg's strange silver cans almost ALWAYS had something in the way of food inside. She suspected that the strange pelts the twolegs kept coming in and out of would be no different.

"Better be something good in there..." Her growl is towards no one in particular, as far as she's aware the others are off investigating other parts of the campground. The pelt she is watching lets out a strange rrrrrrr of a noise as the twoleg inside opens its maw from inside and steps out and away. The maw is open. Waiting.

Russetfall is unafraid as she stalks forward with ears listening for the slightest suggestion that the twoleg is returning. The inside of the pelt is smooth and crinkles underpaw. Soft blankets also cover the floor but that is not what the life guard is interested in. No, she is here for food even if her clanmates might not see it as such.

There's a sniff as she creeps towards a corner full of strange colorful plastic that looks promising. Green eyes narrow as she spots her prize. A red and black plastic rectangle with strange strips of something prey-like inside. She'd had something like that before. It wouldn't be too difficult to tear into- after she got out of the pelt.

Twoleg plastic clamped firmly in her teeth, Russetfall pokes her head out of the pelt to check if the coast was clear. She just needed to get to the safety of the treeline in order to tear into her stolen prize.

OOC: Russetfall stole a bag of beef jerky out of the tent of an unsuspecting twoleg! Will you brave the tent to potentially find something else or partake in her prize with her?

Frostmoth, like Russetfall, is less than happy about the advent of so many twolegs visiting RiverClan territory. Although they don't seem particularly interested in the clan cats (thank StarClan), they still play in the river, bring strange smells around, and are generally a loud nuisance in the rainforest. And who knows how far their scents and sounds travel? It seems like prey is thinning on the bank closest to the campsite, and Frostmoth isn't sure whether to attribute it to the presence of twolegs or the cooling temperature of leaf-fall. This will be RiverClan's first leaf-fall and full leaf-bare in the rainforest, and he hadn't expected such strange activity to compound on the novelty of the seasons.

Still, he knows that it's part of his duty as deputy to help his few fellow council wherever they need it, and he's scouting behind Russetfall with a few other RiverClan cats as they investigate one of the unoccupied twoleg pelts. Frostmoth's fur prickles uneasily. There's no telling when they might return. After a moment of listening, he pokes his head inside after Russetfall. His forepaws press into the soft blankets on the inside and he blinks in pleasant surprise at them. Perhaps it would be a good idea to nab a few of these to take for the colder months ahead... He could vaguely remember them as being a source of warmth and comfort from his time on the ship.

While he is distracted by the blankets, Russetfall has crept deeper into the pelted twoleg den and snagged something plastic and fragrant. He backs out of the tent as she sees her coming, and is quick to keep pace with her as they reach the treeline. "What is it?" He asks, eyeing the colorful plastic. There seems to be a strong, meaty smell emanating from the package, and he crinkles his nose with curiosity. It isn't a bad smell, per se, but it's certainly not like anything he has ever smelled before.

Brook had stayed back from the camp on this patrol, opting to keep an eye out for any Twolegs that might show up while the deputy and council member were doing their investigation. Luckily, nothing.

Brook watched as the cats explored the camp, admiring how adept they were at sneaking and keeping alert for not only potential danger, but also potential prizes. He couldn't help but wonder - maybe Frostmoth was actually the one in charge?

He stood as the cats ran back to the treeline, eyes wide.

"That was impressive!" she meowed, tail twitching excitedly in welcome. "What'd you get?" As the plastic crinkled and punctured under the warrior's teeth, he breathed in the meaty scent.

"Oooh, beef!" The twolegs didn't ever give him beef! He had to steal it from the trash or countertop when they weren't paying attention. A delicacy!

"I barely got to eat that as a kittypet! You're soooo lucky." Maybe if she gave the council member a pleading enough look, she'd share some of the treat with him.

Poseidon lazed around the campground, as Sonja and some of the other people went on some kind of trip, leaving the cats to rest and explore on their own. Though Poseidon felt a little sad about Sonja not being around, he didn't actually feel like going on another one of their exhausting trips. His pawpads hurt just at the thought of it.

He slept in his and Sonja's tent, when the sound of someone leaving their own woke him up - clearly another human, with their loud sighs and heavy footsteps. Now that he was awake, he could as well poke his head out.

The tent the human stepped out of was left open and Poseidon heard movement from inside - though the human was already gone further away. Probably just one of the other house cats, Poseidon thought to himself. But the cats that soon after dashed out of the tent were not ones Poseidon could recognise and he watched as they raced towards the wilderness' cover. More of those wildcats?

Well, Poseidon couldn't just watch, he was way too curious for that. He walked on soft paws towards the group, ears low, trying not to look intimidating. "What are you doing...?" he asked as he saw what they had snatched, though it wasn't like the humans didn't have food to spare. Sometimes Poseidon wondered where the humans stored all the food they seemed to be able to consume.

He looked at the wildcats with wide eyes, hoping they were just as non-threatening as the ones he'd met before. He hadn't really thought this encounter through before approaching them and was now a bit intimidated by them. But there wasn't anything he could do at this time but appear as friendly as he had felt a moment ago.

This plastic was a bit harder to tear into than the black bags the silver cans often had inside, but that was not about to deter her. Sharp teeth were busy making a hole when Frostmoth and Brook both asked what Russetfall had stolen from the den.

"Food." She says simply without looking up, more preoccupied with getting to her prize than explaining what it was. Green eyes narrow first at Brook and then the kittypet beginning to approach as more questions arise. Begging was for kits, as far as she was concerned. Brook could steal her own.

The kittypet on the other paw did not seem intent on begging for hard-stolen food. Just curious, perhaps. The molly drops the bag, placing a paw down as if to lay claim to it.

"...We're keeping an eye on your twolegs to make sure they don't come closer to our camp." She gives a glance towards Frostmoth, whiskers twitching in thought. Surely that would be a justifiable answer for the kittypet and they would leave the patrol alone. And hopefully not alert the twolegs of their presence.

Brook huffed, but there was no antagonism in her eyes. Guess she'd have to work for this herself. No matter- she'd been the victor in plenty of treat container heists as a kittypet! There would surely be no issue stealing from distracted and contented Twolegs and their weird pelts.

He looked instead to the kittypet, flicking his tail sweetly.

"Do you know if your Twolegs have anything else as delicious as beef over there?"

These wildcats were so interesting! They weren't nearly as scary as Poseidon had thought, they were merely just hungry! Of course, there probably wasn't anyone in the wilderness giving them food mulitple times per day! Oh these poor creatures...

"Of course!" purr nodded, turning around. "Wait just a moment!" As he padded away, he wondered just how starved these cats must be - did they scavenge for food all day? What would happen to them when the humans leave? Oh, Poseidon felt so sorry for them. He approached his and Sonja's tent and stepped inside - he knew it was there somewhere!

Purr scanned the small space and soon found what purr was looking for - Sonja's bag! It was, luckily for Poseidon, open and purr rummaged through it for a bit before finding what purr had been looking for - one of the wet food capsules! He knew Sonja brought more just in case, so he had it to spare. Grabbing it carefully in his mouth, he walked back towards the wildcats, who, to Poseidon's relief, were still there.

"Here, this is good food!" he dropped it at their feet. "I'm not sure how to open it, but I promise it's delicious!"
