Night falls without the usual comfort that it tends to bring. It falls eerily, less like settling in and more like dropping down onto all who inhabit the land underneath it. There's still dying light to be spotted over on the horizon—courtesy of the moor that seems to stretch on endlessly. Dimmingsun's lungs expand as he takes a breath; not to steady himself, no, but to remind himself of a life that he had not bore witness to, but one that is important nevertheless.

He had seldom spoken to Molewhisker. General courtesy, like greeting one another or offering assistance when it was expected of them, barely even counts. There's something about the fact that Dimmingsun gets closer with cats who require medical attention, or even need his presence in order to keep them tethered to this world. They come to him at their lowest... and as such, Dimmingsun pays attention to those at their lowest. Molewhisker had not been a patient of his, not really.

Still, they had been Clanmates. This is Dimmingsun's first real vigil since becoming a medicine cat.

He recalls the conversation he had with Meadowpaw; hesitant to approach, considering the little break that he had given her in the first place, but her knowledge was important. Turns out, WindClan did not really have a proper spot for burials. The memorial stones come closest to the concept. It'd be impossibly naive to think that they will not need a dedicated area for granting eternal rest to those who had served their time.

Dimmingsun has never been the most sentimental cat. He knows that death looms above them all; the only uncertainty is the when, and the how. This... with Clan culture in mind, he cannot afford to remain indifferent much longer.

He takes a step back from the body of Molewhisker. Their fur has been cleaned, and the damage that the tunnel had caused is more or less hidden by flowers and herbs; it makes them look more... presentable. Dimmingsun supposes they deserve to look closer to how they had been when alive. A grave has been dug out already with the help of WindClan's strongest, gaping just behind Molewhisker, awaiting them.

Not yet, however.

Dimmingsun turns his gaze to Highstones then. It had been his idea; that place means something to them all, through varying degrees of belief in higher power. WindClan's new gravesite is now a few minutes away from camp, offering it a secluded feel without forcing the Clan to carry the dead for too long. Dimmingsun likes to see the significance in this choice. He had explained it to Dustystar, Goldenroar, and then the entire Clan in tow: how the dead can now glance towards the place where the Moonstone rests, and how, perhaps, this will grant them easier passage into the afterlife.

It could mean nothing. It could mean everything.

"Molewhisker has passed during a tunnel collapse,"
he explains to those who may have just arrived to the scene, and need a bit of context. Their days had been busy after all.
"From what I've been told, they likely did not have the chance to suffer for too long. Now they can rest without the pain of life hanging over them."
A beat passes, and that's Dimmingsun's cue to sit down and curl his tail around himself, posture straight. He feels it is the perfect time for family and friends to utter their final farewells before the earth gets to swallow Molewhisker.

Set after this thread.

YEWKIT

.

.
She had not known the cat well in life, but she had heard they were a good cat, a good clanmate. And now they were gone. Yewkit knew death was a natural part of life, but there was nothing natural about Molewhisker's death. That much she had heard.

Despite being unfamiliar with them, she couldn't help but feel a little sorrow at their loss. Not only for WindClan, but for themselves and their family. Yewkit had not lost anyone close to her, not yet at least. Not to death. She had lost cats she thought she'd connected with, but that was different - that was her own foolishness and naivity. Not death.

Despite it all, she shed no tears. It was not her place, all she could do was dip her head in respect and attend in silence. She wanted to honor Molewhisker, but not take space from those for whom this vigil was intended. So she just sat, quiet as ever, her breaths the only indicator that she was there.

Ravenmask listened as Dimmingsun spoke, having helped carry the body of their late clanmate to the burial space. The medicine cat spoke evenly and kindly, and Ravenmask bowed his head for others to give their final respects, his gaze glancing to Highstones beforehand.

Would Molewhisker reside with their ancestors? Or would their spirit join the earth they loved in life?

I'm a young soul in this very strange world
Hoping I could learn a bit 'bout what is true and fake
But why all this hate? Try to communicate
Finding trust and love is not always easy to make

Weaselchirp listened in silence as the words were spoken, her large ears twitching once before settling again. She did not interrupt. She did not speak. Something was building inside her chest, a pressure like packed earth before a collapse, and she very deliberately set it aside. She would not let it spill. Not here. Not now. Poison helped no one, and she refused to be the one who let it seep into the soil. Her heart ached, heavy and dull, for the friend she now had to bury. For the tunneler who had never been anything but patient, clever, and kind. Molewhisker, who had understood the language of stone and root as deeply as she herself did. Who should have been here, whiskers twitching, mind already chasing the next problem to solve.

And her thoughts wandered. Wandered to the why...

Merrystalk's words echoed in her ears, sinking in slowly, cruelly. SkyClan's scent. Present on Molewhisker's fur. Her pelt prickled as if a cold draft had passed through her bones. Those wide, intense orange eyes fixed themselves upon the still body before her, unblinking, searching for answers the dead could not give. Who met you down there? Who greeted you in tunnels that belonged so deeply to WindClan, to the earth they had shaped with careful paws and trust? Who dared bring claws into sacred dark? Her mind spun with unwanted images. A stranger's shadow in the tunnel. Alien paws where only familiar ones should tread. Which SkyClanner had done this? Which cat had decided Molewhisker's life was theirs to take?

So the earth could remember them. So the earth could return the favor.

Her skrunkly whiskers trembled, betraying her for just a moment. Anger rose, sharp and dangerous, a spark she rarely allowed herself to feel. It pressed at her ribs, demanding voice, demanding justice that tasted too much like vengeance. She swallowed it down, jaw tightening. They had suffered. She knew that now, with terrible certainty. The collapse may have been swift. The earth, at least, had been merciful in the end. But whoever had been there before had not been. Slowly, carefully, she moved forward. Her steps were quiet, hesitant. She lowered her head and gently nosed Molewhisker's ear, the familiar motion aching with the knowledge that it would never be returned.

" You will be so missed, my friend... " she murmured, voice low and steady despite the storm beneath it. " The earth will whisper your name for seasons to come. "

She lingered there, just a heartbeat longer, as if listening for that whisper already.

Slugpaw sat by his mentor, he didn't know Molewhisker well. A couple scarce tunnel patrols, but nothing more. He had never been one for sentiment, struggling enough to find kind words or comforting ones for his own siblings or family --- let alone cats he did not know well. Still, he cared somewhat about his mentor. She was quirky, odd, but he still felt some charge towards her. She was insistent on going to this vigil, to mourn a friend that her beloved tunnels had consumed.

Dimmingsun did his best to say some kind words, but Slugpaw could tell the Medicine Cat had the same struggles he did. Still, he dipped his head. For once, he knew this was not the right place to force himself into center stage. Instead, he listened to what his clanmates said about the tom. He wondered if there would be a vigil like this when he passed away, everyone mourning him --- how great he was. He grinned at the thought, before quickly dipping his head, not wanting to look too pleased by a clanmate passing away.

Slugpaw wasn't a religiously motivated tom. He wasn't sure if there was a divine afterlife, but Meadowpaw seemed to believe there was and in a way, he wanted to show some type of belief to curry favor with her again. He cleared his throat quietly, seeing as a few eyes turned towards him. Amber eyes focused on the tom's body.

"We tunnelers know just how dangerous our work can be..." He paused, looking to make sure those gathered were listening. "Molewhisker has reminded us of that first-hand." He was trying to sound mature, knowledgeable. He took a deep breath, "Molewhisker was a good tom, and he will be missed." He meowed, curling his tail over his feet. He ducked his head again, smiling to himself as he felt the gazes of his clanmates upon him.
