SABLESTAR
he/him
sixty-four moons
shadowclan leader

PENNED BY gonkpilled

The cold snap bit its dagger teeth into the flesh of Sablestar's paws as he padded through the cold mud to stand in the throne of a now barren buttonbush. Round bulbs formed at the edges of many scaly stems, colorless and drained of its beauty. The bottom of Sablestar's ribcage looked so hollowed that not even his thick pelt, now dulled and wiry, could hide it. Hunger persisted through the night, kept him rolling in his daytime sleep to the point of rising again just to feel something other than the need for warm iron on his tongue.

The brush could practically swallow him whole in his weak display. The strong, powerful figure that stood here only a few moons ago seemed lost especially now that his ranks had been butchered. By his own call no less...

The paint strokes of his claws against the earth held him steady. "ShadowClan, join me in the moonlight." His meow still holds it power, perhaps the only part of him that does.

"We have one apprentice ceremony tonight- Saffronkit. You came to ShadowClan alone, but by a miracle. You face this night against many beaten odds, and I'm proud to call you Saffronpaw after this night. Saffronpaw, my new apprentice." Sablestar took a breath with more effort than usual while his gaze focused on the ruddy orange kit. His plans for Saffronkit had nearly come to fruition, and in the moons of her training she would be chiseled down to her fate as he saw fit. Something worthy to be called a ShadowClanner, something so pure of her home, there would never be this abandonment story attached.

He does not lean for her to approach any further, however, continuing on with the rest of the meeting. "And Viscerapaw, while your training with Birdtalon has been short, I trust you've learned well before her death. Your training will continue with Marrowkeeper's help." It dawned on him then that it's new mentor shared the name of it's littermate, too. If he were in a better mood it could have humored him.

"And while we continue to fill our ranks of apprentices, we see new warriors this moon as well." The tuxedo's eyes swept over those who succeeded to survive and shine through their peers. "Monsterpaw, Pipitpaw, and Dreampaw; step forward." The three rise from their mentors sides- Mothbite, Flaxbelly, Halfshade, Trusted with the careful guidance of those meant to keep them fed in the harshest of moons. They had earned it, for Dreampaw he felt especially so.

"Monsterpaw, for your unwavering strength and fearsome loyalty, you face this night as a warrior to ShadowClan. In gratitude to all that Mothbite has passed down to you, and the will you have shown, I name you Monsterbark!" His shout began to rasp, but the leader maintained his composure as another set of claws dug into the earth.

"Pipitpaw, you have the natural skills of a Shadowborn cat. I've watched you tread our home on quiet paws-" His mouth, unfortunately, couldn't be said for the same. "- Flaxbelly has curated a rather stealthy warrior for the Clan, and for that you are named Pipithaunt!" For all the moons Sablestar had believed Magpiepaw was telling tales of a ghost at their borders, he is glad to see his son find a true friend and not something imaginary as he originally believed.

Now his sighs rest on those that mirror him. Round gold-dipped plums look to her father, and despite a full grown cat in his midst he still sees the pudge-bellied kit that greeted him beneath the cold oaks. "A paw in many worlds, but it brings me great pride to see you most comfortable here." With any hope, Asterpaw would come to understand it, too. "Your days of training have come to an end, and you have learned plenty between both your homes. Your journey as a warrior has begun, and with the highest honor I can give... Dreampaw, from this moment on the world will know you as Dreamshadow." A pillar to the home her father bled and killed for. She, and Magpiepaw, would allow him to lead their Clan to further greatness. If his immortality did not serve him as he wished, he trusted the legacy given to his kin to continue on.

Sablestar cheered, but not long. As the noise simmered he had one more moment to share with his Clan before pulling Saffronpaw into her training.

"Sealdawn, Grayflight- it is your turn to step forward." Sablestar dug a fang into his cheek as he felt the tension rise in his chest. The dreams or nightmares- whatever they could be called- must have been meant for this? "You have both done well to serve ShadowClan. Your Clanmates have come to trust you, depend on you, but I ask for something greater. A place on my council as Night Guards, would suffice." Bluegale, Mirepurr, Jadethorn, Mothbite and now... these two. He would have no need for Wolfpack if he did not allow any space for betrayal. They were all pliable enough, and perhaps placing his trust in unlikely fellows would be the best way to pull the Clan back from this hungry madness.

"That is all, ShadowClan."

Saffronkit stepped out of the nursery, papa had returned to her after her own stay in the medicine den for the rogue that attacked her. She had come out of it with a small nick in her ear, but was otherwise unscathed. Papa looked shaken when she told him what happened, and truthfully she still was too. She didn't understand how someone that didn't know her could be so cruel, was this how all outsiders were? Was this what those outside of Shadowclan would resort to? She swallowed hard at the thought, the lingering clawing feeling that she didn't belong here pushed back by an antagonizing fear of the outside. The beasts that claimed to be feline, ready to strike and harm without warning. Were they all like that? Had Sablestar truly brought her here to protect her from the others?

As Sablestar's gruff meow sounds, the clan slowly gathers. A small nudge from papa to go sit, obeyed without question. There was an air of respect for Sablestar from everyone here, especially in the absence of Wolfpack. Saffronkit remembered the gruff tom, she had been mildly afraid of him. It seemed strange someone like that would just abandon them, but perhaps his loyalty was elsewhere. She sat beside her papa and Stoatstream, her older sister looking just as relieved as she felt that papa had woken up. She felt herself instinctively lean into the tom, a comfort in his long fur that she had missed in his absence --- a place she felt truly and utterly safe.

She focused on Sablestar, the black tom commanding attention. "We have one apprentice ceremony tonight- Saffronkit." She froze hearing her name, the anguish of feeling like she lost papa compounded by her own stay in the Medicine Den made her forget that she had turned six moons --- something she once looked forward to with excitement now had her stomach in knots. The question ringing in her head again: were the other clans all beasts? Cruel? Bloodthirsty? She swallowed hard, stepping forward slightly. She looked at her clanmates, her small frame still more befitting to that of a kit instead of an apprentice.

"You came to ShadowClan alone, but by a miracle. You face this night against many beaten odds, and I'm proud to call you Saffronpaw after this night. Saffronpaw, my new apprentice." She looked up at the tom, his strange eyes looking down at her. She looked around for guidance, having observed other apprentices touching noses with their mentors. But he was still addressing his clan, she nervously dipped her head towards her leader --- moving back to be with papa. She would talk to Sable after. The rest of the ceremony was a blur, with the orange molly only looking up upon hearing her brother's name --- Monsterpaw no longer, now Monsterbark. She smiled with pride, but felt her own anxiety rising.

The leader had chosen her. While other apprentices got given to warriors, Sablestar personally wanted to train her. She felt wrong, a fear in her that she would not live up to expectations --- a fear that he had chosen wrong. Her paws trembled slightly, and once he dismissed the clan she cautiously padded towards him. She looked sheepish, small in the moonlight in which Sablestar liked to hold his meetings.

"You want to mentor me?" She murmured, coming right out and saying it. "I'm not sure I deserve that.."

Irritation simmered beneath his pelt, a feeling he couldn't quite shake. His frame felt wrong. Too thin. Fireflysnap had always been a lean cat, but not like this, not all angles and hollow weight. Even he had to admit it. Leafbare was sinking its claws in deep, and with it came a sharper edge to his temper. Each day he found something new to grumble about, something else to snap at. Swamphound liked to joke that it was just his age. But this? This was getting ridiculous.

No second-in-command. Bare prey piles. Just mouths, too many mouths to feed. Cats rising to warriorhood at least brought a bitter sort of relief. Good. They could hunt for themselves now. His gaze drifted to Swamphound, worry flickering there before he could stop it. Then to the rest of the family he'd been mated into. He counted them without meaning to, eyes lingering a heartbeat too long on each shape. How long before hunger claimed one of them? A low grumble left his throat as his tail lashed once against the ground. He forced his attention forward again, toward the leader. Monsterbark. Pipithaunt. Dreamshadow. Names that carried weight, or were meant to.

Then the new night guards. Fireflysnap scoffed softly, tilting his head as he regarded them. Two soft hearts, that much he knew already. Sealdawn and Grayflight. Time would tell whether softness would break them... Or harden into something useful.

When you're lost in the universe, lost in the universe, don't lose faith
My mother says, "Your whole life's in the paws of the Stars"

.

Tickfrost sat in stillness, a blue shadow among many, his torn ear angled toward Sablestar as if every word might weigh something precious. Since the prey had thinned, the world had felt narrower, sharper. Choices came with teeth now. Risks were no longer hypothetical. They were taken, or the clan starved. And though every instinct in him balked at some of the paths they had been forced down, he understood the why of it. Survival demanded ugly courage... They were still here. Thin-flanked, yes, but unbowed. His friends still breathed. His sister still stood. Even without a deputy, ShadowClan endured.

When the new warriors were named, his voice rose with the rest, rough but proud. " Monsterbark! " A sharp flick of his tail. " Pipithaunt! " A grin tugged briefly at his muzzle. " Dreamshadow! " Pride warmed his chest, small but stubborn, a reminder that growth still happened even in lean seasons. But it was Sealdawn who truly caught his attention. His orange eyes lingered on her as she was told to take place beside the Night Guards, the title settling on her shoulders like something she had always been meant to carry. Tickfrost dipped his head toward her, a quiet, resolute nod. No whooping, no show. Just pride, steady and sincere, shining through his gaze.

A little bitter, a little tired, but Amethystpaw still sat for the meeting called, Amethystpaw still listened.

First, Saffron was turned into Saffronpaw - Good, at the age we have been promised, not younger. Not favored. Taking her on as his own apprentice certainly was a choice, but not one the tortoiseshell questioned. Nor did he care that much about it. The other apprentices getting their warrior names did not surprise him, having earned them through hard work. But he barely knew any of them and thus could not care less. He did not join the cheering of their new names.

What did come as a surprise to Amethystpaw was the naming of the new Night Guards. "Grayflight?" he breathed out in surprise and awe. Maybe something good could come out of this after all. The apprentice smiled for the first time in what felt like forever, genuinely happy for his uncle. It would mean the tom would have even less time for Amethystpaw and he was not thrilled about that, but he was still happy for him - to get such a position was an honor and Amethyst was not about to make this about himself.

He told himself that once the meeting was over, he would go and congratulate Grayflight personally. His uncle truly deserved this position.

It's beginning to take more effort to rise from her nest each night, and briefly the young warrior wonders if she looks like the spitting image of her late mother now before the other died. Thin, dull fur clings sharply to her bony frame as Sealdawn moves to gather at her leader's call before she tucks her limbs underneath herself to listen.

Saffronkit is apprenticed to Sablestar, a good choice, she thinks. Stoatstream was a wonderful warrior and friend, and Sealdawn hoped Saffronpaw would flourish just as much if not moreso. Then apprentices are promoted. All are well deserved, and her voice joins the chorus of congratulations. That was it then. A rather uneventful meeting, thankfully- her name being called nearly makes her snap her own neck with the speed she lifts her head to stare wide-eyed at her leader's.

Her. Night Guard? No fucking way. It was almost laughable. Smogmaw had deserved it when he had been named as such all those moons ago. Not her. Even if she was following in his pawsteps in a way...she hardly felt like she looked the part of a night guard. Did not have anywhere near the intimidating presence most others on the council had.

What did Sable see in her? Had he remembered her promise in his dream? Regardless, the answer she gave was obvious. There would be no other possibility. "Of course, I accept."

She stood, then. Chin raised as she met his gaze with her own.

'I can do this. I can do some good, this way. I hope.'

Pipitpaw wasn't surprised to be in the positive sights of their leader, given his penchant for looming around his son like a ghost. Sablestar had been one of the first faces he'd been introduced to here and had the generosity enough to let him stay after he'd lost track of his mother. That was a kindness he'd worked hard to repay, following along dutifully to all his assigned orders and making sure to contribute best he could to keep the prey pile stocked. It.... wasn't much... given the growling of all their bellies... but he was trying and that meant something, right? The dark-furred tom wasn't one to get too wrapped up in the negative, hunger was just a temporary setback and one that would be remedied any day now, of that he was certain.

Saffronkit holds his attention raptly the moment she's called forward, flicking one of his ears as a show of his excitement on her behalf. She was eager and ready... that's what mattered! And to be swept up under Sablestar's wing himself, huh? Cheeky kid! He stamps his paws, overwhelmed by his own energy and needing an outlet for it- "Let's gooooo Saffronpaw!!!" He'd need to make sure to show her all the coolest hangout spots so she could show off to her new den-mates... That would definitely get her paws in the right place for the next chapter of her life. An explorer... a student!

Then, it's his turn. He trots confidently to stand with his peers, looking to Dreampaw and sticking out his tongue playfully. They'd beaten her litter-mate to getting their full names... he was sure to be jealous after today. "Cool your dad's naming you, yeah? It's like you've got both parts of'em." Pipitpaw would only ever have the name his mother gave him and the void of whatever space a father was meant to fill. His tail flags behind him, clearly intending to be cheerful and illicit a positive from an otherwise tense winter. Ultimately, he finds wide eyes fixed back on his leader, smirking to be complimented as something of a professional in stealth. You'd never believe it, given how much he loved to yap but... he was smart enough to know when to be quiet!

Pipithaunt...

Ho... ly... shit... that has got to be the coolest name ever.

Dreamshadow's cool too... and like, Monsterbark's got some real kick to it. But nothing could top the elation he had for his own great fortune. That was him... for life! Pipithaunt... If a smile could kill someone, his surely would take every last one of Sablestar's lives here and now! He turns towards his peers, bumping his head against their shoulders to congratulate them. "Heck yeah guys, we did it!"

He hardly has enough focus left to care about whoever else gets their ups, feeling like his pads are burning to run out into the pocosin and slough off some energy!
