Mistpaw had been diligent since they arrived. The perfect sister, really. Rookpaw wanted her to go far, keeping out of her way. If she asked him to come on a patrol or something, he'd finally give in and follow- but he kept his distance. Let her hook all the prey she could, catching scents and speaking to anyone on the borders if she wanted to. A willing shadow, really. Rookpaw didn't mind when it came to her. Mistpaw deserved it all- he really couldn't give a shit where he ended up. Maybe that was selfish. Maybe that was...
"Are you listening, Rookpaw?"
His teeth grit together, eyes looking up from the piece of prey that he had snagged for himself off of the pile. "I've been talking to you, y'know. About what we're going to do this af-" Rookpaw inhaled sharply and sighed, cutting them off. His eyes rolled as he leaned his head down to bite into the flesh of the fish. It wasn't from this morning, rather last night, and it tasted a little off, but Rookpaw was used to it. He made sure to leave the fresher stuff for others. Petalbreath frowned. They were a relatively pretty cat, a calico with soft orange patches and softer green eyes, but every bit of 'pretty' was erased for the irritation currently on their face. Rookpaw chewed deliberately slow, then tilted his head up to stare at her.
"Not interested." He said. Their nose twitched, then scrunched up, eyes narrowing. "You're never interested. Whatever. Fine, fail your assessment and be an apprentice forever. See what I care." They said. Rookpaw was taken aback- the calico normally rolled over when he spat back at them, so he growled softly. "I'm not going to fail." He rebutted, but they cut him off from saying anymore. "Oh, no, you're going to fail. I don't recall you catching a fish in the last moon, or swimming this week besides to clean yourself off." The heat was growing in their tone, green eyes turning something more... not murderous, but definitely angry. "You haven't bothered to practice your battle skills with me, and I seriously doubt your sister is holding your paw with this, too."
"You leave her out of this-"
"Or what? You gonna fight me over this?"
"Maybe I will!"
"Go on, then! Let me see it! Show me your spine, lazy bu-"
Rookpaw leaps at Petalbreath before they have a chance to catch their breath. He's snarling and snapping, paws wrapping around Petalbreath's head from behind, rear paws battering their back. All in all it wasn't an awful leap, but it was a bad hold. Petalbreath is slippery- they aren't necessarily known for their battle strength, but they could hold their own. They twist in Rookpaw's grip, slamming their forehead against his nose. He's whining and gasping in an instant, rolling off of Petalbreath. His mentor's paws shift outward, bringing them lower to the ground, sharp green eyes ready for Rookpaw's next leap.
