This guy was seriously getting on Rookpaw's nerves. He had been, for the last few moons that he's been assigned to this mentor. Each and every assignment was met with an eyeroll from said apprentice, a cold shoulder and a willful ignorance. And each and every time, Petalbreath let him get away with it. Not much they could do anyways, not with Rookpaw. His ego was just as big as his stubbornness, sharp willed and unmoving. And maybe he was just lazy, but Rookpaw couldn't bother with any of this.

Mistpaw had been diligent since they arrived. The perfect sister, really. Rookpaw wanted her to go far, keeping out of her way. If she asked him to come on a patrol or something, he'd finally give in and follow- but he kept his distance. Let her hook all the prey she could, catching scents and speaking to anyone on the borders if she wanted to. A willing shadow, really. Rookpaw didn't mind when it came to her. Mistpaw deserved it all- he really couldn't give a shit where he ended up. Maybe that was selfish. Maybe that was...

"Are you listening, Rookpaw?"

His teeth grit together, eyes looking up from the piece of prey that he had snagged for himself off of the pile. "I've been talking to you, y'know. About what we're going to do this af-" Rookpaw inhaled sharply and sighed, cutting them off. His eyes rolled as he leaned his head down to bite into the flesh of the fish. It wasn't from this morning, rather last night, and it tasted a little off, but Rookpaw was used to it. He made sure to leave the fresher stuff for others. Petalbreath frowned. They were a relatively pretty cat, a calico with soft orange patches and softer green eyes, but every bit of 'pretty' was erased for the irritation currently on their face. Rookpaw chewed deliberately slow, then tilted his head up to stare at her.

"Not interested." He said. Their nose twitched, then scrunched up, eyes narrowing. "You're never interested. Whatever. Fine, fail your assessment and be an apprentice forever. See what I care." They said. Rookpaw was taken aback- the calico normally rolled over when he spat back at them, so he growled softly. "I'm not going to fail." He rebutted, but they cut him off from saying anymore. "Oh, no, you're going to fail. I don't recall you catching a fish in the last moon, or swimming this week besides to clean yourself off." The heat was growing in their tone, green eyes turning something more... not murderous, but definitely angry. "You haven't bothered to practice your battle skills with me, and I seriously doubt your sister is holding your paw with this, too."

"You leave her out of this-"
"Or what? You gonna fight me over this?"
"Maybe I will!"
"Go on, then! Let me see it! Show me your spine, lazy bu-"

Rookpaw leaps at Petalbreath before they have a chance to catch their breath. He's snarling and snapping, paws wrapping around Petalbreath's head from behind, rear paws battering their back. All in all it wasn't an awful leap, but it was a bad hold. Petalbreath is slippery- they aren't necessarily known for their battle strength, but they could hold their own. They twist in Rookpaw's grip, slamming their forehead against his nose. He's whining and gasping in an instant, rolling off of Petalbreath. His mentor's paws shift outward, bringing them lower to the ground, sharp green eyes ready for Rookpaw's next leap.

- TORRENTPAW -

Not some average bones, I believe in love!

Torrentpaw had been listening, his ears twitching uncertainly as their argument unfolded, growing more heated by the second. As soon as Rookpaw leaped at his mentor, Torrentpaw was on his paws, padding briskly towards the scene as he watched the older apprentice grab onto Petalbreath's head. It was ridiculous, fighting in the middle of camp like this, or even at all, for that matter.

Once Petalbreath had thrown Rookpaw off, Torrentpaw barged between them before he could make another move, his eyes darting angrily between them. His posture was relaxed, though his tail flicked back and forth in irritation.

"Don't you think we've had enough infighting recently?" Torrentpaw questioned, a hint of challenge in his tone. There was no need to offer an explanation of what he was referring to; Pikestar's death was no secret to any in Riverclan. "You should put your claws away, and use that strength for something other than attacking your clanmates." Torrentpaw meowed, gaze now resting on Rookpaw.

BATGLOOM
'cause it feels like I've been living upside down
Batgloom was lying near the nursery, basking in the sun and cleaning himself. It had not been too long ago that he moved to the nursery. He is only listening to the argument between mentor and apprentice with half an ear. It annoyed him if he was being honest. After everything that happened lately he'd prefer some peace and quiet to this. He has just really tired of fighting, whether it's verbally or physically. Have they really nothing better to do than arguing in the middle of camp? Still, he doesn't feel particularly compelled to do anything. Sure it's annoying, but he knows these kinds of things can happen and it's nothing bad.

This changes though, when he hears Rookpaw attacking Petalbreath. His tail flicks annoyed and he gets back on his paw. His tolerance for infighting is even lower than usually since Pikestar lost a life. While he's tired of all fights, he can understand verbal arguments and disagreements, but this goes too far. They're one clan and as such they need trust each other to have one another's backs. Clanmates should be able to trust each other not to attack a clanmate. He grits his teeth and moves over to Rookpaw and Petalbreath. He isn't as fast anymore as he used to be, so he's not the first to intervene. "Enough!" He snarls and moves next to Torrentpaw. His voice is uncharacteristically loud and sharp. He turns his head towards Rookpaw, then towards Petalbreath. "Torrentpaw is right. I'm sure you have something better to do than fighting."

Batgloom is a large, longhaired black tom with white spots on his legs and white freckles, one blind, pale green eye and one missing eye and a scarred pelt. He usually tends to be quiet and keeps to himself. While he is often perceived as cold and tends to push others away, he is deeply loyal and wants to protect those close to them. He prefers it if things are in order.

Frostmoth watches the conflict unfold from a quiet corner of camp. He isn't looming per se, despite his sticking to the silent shade, but he does observe keenly. It isn't really unheard of for apprentices and their mentors to be poor fits from time to time, but for their arguments to devolve into fighting... Well, that was really something. Frostmoth stands as Rookpaw jumps on top of Petalbreath, but his clanmates are beating him in response time. Torrentpaw tries to break up the fight with Batgloom as backup. He clicks his tongue in disagreement with the apprentice; RiverClan has had a lot of infighting, but this is a bit different. More so related to incompatibility than true disdain for one another.

The deputy joins the other two with a scrutinizing gaze that flickers between the two. "Might have just been the kick in the ass Rookpaw needed," he huffs under his breath before measuring Petalbreath with a half-hearted look. "I guess you two just aren't a good pair," Frostmoth goes on with a shrug "Rookpaw is unmotivated and lazy, but taunting him isn't going to help either." He glances at Rookpaw to measure if the apprentice is cooling off at all, feeling emboldened to continue because of the cats that have already tried to break up the fighting.

Turning back to Petalbreath, he adds: "Rookpaw will fail his assessment at this rate, but the blame seems equal to me."
