" So... " the large tom began, his voice cutting through the air like the swipe of a claw. His amber gaze drifted from Jadethorn to Wolfpack, sharp and calculating. There was a flicker of something like approval in his eyes as they lingered on the latter, Wolfpack was strong, a capable warrior. Coalstrike didn't blame Jadethorn for her choices; if she sought kits from the best of ShadowClan's blood, she had chosen wisely. But the situation posed a question. A complication. How would they know which kits belonged to which father? Would they each claim what bore their features, their scent, their fire? Or would they raise them divided, split in responsibility, turning one litter into fractured halves?

That would not breed strength. ShadowClan needed unity. And more importantly, powerful young warriors unburdened by petty rivalries or favoritism. He'd seen what happened when one kit was discarded. Thistle had been proof enough of that failure, she had been weak and too soft. But Jadethorn? No, she was not weak. She wouldn't allow softness to take root. He narrowed his eyes slightly, voice low and unwavering. " How are we going to do this? "

There was a moment of silence as he watched them, then finally a huff. " I suggest we raise them as our own, all of them. No lines drawn. No favoritism. We are, all of us, strong. " He cast a brief, silent glance toward Wolfpack. The tom's choice of friends left something to be desired... Marbleshine was hardly what Coalstrike would call worthy, but every warrior had their blind spots. He let the moment linger. " They will grow under the guidance of all three of us. They will become warriors forged by fire and discipline. They won't know failure. Not if we do this right. "

AND I AM SORRY MY CONSCIENCE CALLED IN SICK AGAIN

Wolfpack didn't shift under Coalstrikes stare. Let the other tom study him all he wanted. Wolf didn't feel any shame or anger toward the situation– not about Jade's choice, or the outcome, or the fact that none of them knew for certain whose blood ran through which kits. None of that bothered him.

The only thing that mattered to Wolf, was what those kits became.

It was funny. He'd never cared before. With the amount of flings he had he was certain he had children out there somewhere-- but Wolf was a wanderer, a rogue with no home and no family, and he would have been long gone before he even learned of a pregnancy in the works. The only reason it was different this time was because he was stationary, determined to keep a place in the pocasin-- which meant his life and his choices lingered there with him. And if a shecat was having his kits here,- claiming them publically as his-- he'd make sure they were worthy of the blood in their veins.

He met Coalstrikes words with a short, thoughtful hum, eyes flicking to Jadethorn for the briefest of moments before settling back on the older tom. "I wouldn't be against that.." he answered, not just because it was a simple and clean solution to their situation, but because he genuinely didn't disagree. "It doesn't matter to me who made which kits. They'll all be Shadowclan– thats the only blood I care about."

He had no interest in half-clan kits that would be raised on entirely different moral codes, their loyalty split between two homes. It would breed hesitation, and hesitation got cats killed.

His own had nearly cost Marbleshine her life, a mistake he wouldn't allow to happen twice.

"i'll admit, I'd be intrigued to see how a generations of Shadowclanners raised by more.. ideal standards, would turn out." Kits raised to be survivors, who used their brains over their hearts, who recognized and valued strength and skill. Jadethorn and Coalstrike seemed to prioritize those things-- seemed to understand the importance of looking after your own, and only your own.

Had Coalstrike been a softer, more naive cat– one Wolfpack would expect to fight him over every moral conundrum along the way– he might have put an end to the entire conversation right then and there. But if he wouldn't complain about Coalstrike mentoring his offspring, what was the difference in having him play an active parenting role in this scenario?
