LEADER OF SKYCLAN

.

// set the night before the gathering

The burgeoning moon did little to soothe her nerves. Hell, Hawkstar was quite sure that no full moon would ever be more than a reason to stress for a very long time, at least as long as there were non-believers and heathens across the roots of Fourtrees, no doubt staring into their territory at this very moment plotting the massacre of her clan and traditions.

If Hawkstar was prone to neurotics before, the last Gathering had only worsened the paranoia she often steeped herself in.

But they had agreed. SkyClan had foolishly agreed to their false new code and their version of StarClan. Fine. So be it then.

"SkyClan."

They file in from their dens and duties, settling in uncomfortably next to one another with their flickers of wonder, disdain, anger - or whatever inane emotion they could throw at her safely under the light of the almost-full moon. It didn't matter though. As long as she was leader, it was her word they hung on, whether they approved of it or not. "Tomorrow's Gathering, I will be bringing my deputy, my medicine cat, Kitesigh, Mulberryburst, Dovecloud, Brightnose, Victoryscorn, Daisydream, and Lupine. Any of you may bring your apprentices if you think them capable.

My lead warriors will be staying behind to be my stand-ins. If anything were to go wrong, follow their word as if it were my own."

There was little to be said about the state of the other clans, or at least, little to be said that the clan did not already know.

"While we are here," Hawkstar continues on, sweeping the thought of ThunderClan out of her mind with a flick of her tapered tail. "Jesterpaw and Mallowpaw, I want Cometglow and Quailstep to take over your respective trainings. I hope that their steady paws will give you a more well-rounded understanding of your studies."

Reassignments done and over, with two apprentices plucked from their previous mentors without a word to their failings or where they could improve. Just… poof. New mentors - think about what you've done. Hawkstar had little patience for anything more, at least during this phase of the moon.

"You all might see more kittypets and soft-paws hanging at the edge of our territory. These new faces are our new … friends … and allies. Fizzystar of WarriorClan has promised us a boost to our ranks, and new bodies to train. In return, I have promised them protection from the junkyard cats that attacked myself and Tawnybeam some weeks ago. If even a proven SkyClan warrior could be injured, I shudder to think what they could do to an untrained pet.

With our new friends comes an old tradition to be reintroduced … I am opening SkyClan's borders again to daylight warriors and part-time soldiers. As they come and go, we will assign patrols to take our prospective ranks back to the Twolegplace as we did in the gorge. I hope … I hope that our new friends will provide a breath of new life into SkyClan, and that we might be able to show more cats how a noble warrior acts under the diction of the code."

Chrysalisgaze was to remain in camp - she hoped it was because Hawkstar considered her capable of protecting her clanmates, shall anything happen while Hawkstar and the others were away. She listened as her leader assigned Jesterpaw and Mallowpaw new mentors, with no further comment about the situation, but she trusted Hawkstar had good reason for doing it this way. Chrysalisgaze couldn't even begin to imagine the responsibility and stress Hawkstar must have been constantly under - she herself oftentime felt overwhelmed having to care of her kittens and she wasn't even the one who primarily cared for them during the day. How much strain did Hawkstar have to be under, to care for not only her clanmates, but also worry about the other clans and colonies out there?
When Hawkstar mentioned the reintroduction of daylight warriors, she felt glad. There could never be too many helpful paws around. Looking at her leader, she wasn't sure if Hawkstar felt the same, but Chrysalisgaze didn't worry too much. She glanced at her kittens sitting next to their mother and knew she would do anything to protect them. If there were others willing to help, why would she turn them away? And the opposite was true as well - if anyone else needed protection, she would be there for them. What kind of warrior would she be if she wouldn't do that?
Hawkstar had finished talking and Chrysalisgaze wondered if the gathering would turn out okay. She couldn't help feel anxious over it, after what had happened last time. Scanning her clanmates, she saw the same worry reflected in their eyes and tail twitches. Tomorrow was going to be a long night...

BRIGHTNOSE ──

M... me??
Brightnose stiffens when her name leaves Hawkstar's mouth. The Gathering? The last one had been an absolute disaster - Brightnose hadn't really imagined having to go since then, as any attempt to had made her stomach churn with anxiety. This feeling springs back to life now as she tries to sit straighter, taller, looking ahead at her leader in a determined act of masking her own worry. If... if Hawkstar has chosen me... all I can do is my best. This thought does nothing to calm her, but being picked for something important does make her puff her chest out with pride, just a little.

Continuing to listen (and hopefully distract herself from her anxious thoughts), she watches as Jesterpaw and Mallowpaw are given new mentors swiftly, refusing to address their former mentors at all. Yikes. Brightnose isn't sure if this would feel worse than their leader announcing their failures to the whole Clan, but perhaps they could find solace in the fact that Hawkstar is clearly stressed, no doubt over the Gathering. In any case, Brightnose is happy for Quailstep - being assigned an apprentice is a sign of capability. She'll have to congratulate her once the meeting ends.

Finally, Hawkstar announces the return of daylight warriors, and to expect kittypets near the twoleg border. Brightnose expected this to happen eventually, and it's good timing, too; while she's never encountered the mentioned junkyard cats herself, she detests rouge gangs and she doesn't want them anywhere near here. Hopefully with SkyClan warriors defending the kittypets, they'll start staying in their own stars-damned territory. SkyClan has enough to worry about already with the rouges living across the ThunderClan border...

As their gracious king called the meeting for the moon, Starlingtrail smiled warmly at her kittens to listen quietly. They were young, but respect for their council was something she was expecting her little darlings to take to heart. Everyone one of them had a barrage of questions, and now older for this second gathering, she was sure they would inquire about what a gathering even was. It wasn't as if the molly had attended one, with a litter of delicate little things; she hadn't left the nursery to even see Fourtrees in moons now.

Speaking of, she let out a small sigh of relief. Chrysalisgaze and Swarmswirl had not been summoned to the gathering. Her most beloved wife and her treasured sister were two cats she had barely been without, and while she did not doubt their strengths, the two of them staying out of harm's way of those rather barbaric alleged clans they shared a territory with. The last gathering tainted with blood and fear, she hoped this place would be safe for the littlest ones of the clan. But she had the utmost faith in their unwavering leader to put those cats in their place, and someday that protection would be repaid with strong, loyal warriors.

The thought made her heart swell, just as two apprentices were given mentors of their own, training to become warriors the clan would surely be proud of. She smiled warmly at the two youngsters; someday her own three would stand there, before the clan as they were awarded their apprenticeships. The thought made her heart ache slightly, looking down at her most precious gifts. Each one was coming into their own personalities, stronger by the day. Some small part of Starling wished they would never get any bigger, but Milkheart gently teased that every parent thought the same. That they would grow in the blink of an eye and enjoy every last moment.

But, as Hawkstar continued, another smile melted onto her maw. Daylighters, finally returning to their ranks. It had been hard on her father, Greyduck, to leave his twolegs once and for all on the journey. He decided to stay with the family in his elder years and bid his kittypet life adieu. So many cats from the old territory gave up their kittypet homes, but knowing that those of their new home were willing to join ranks with Skyclan brought her immense joy. Her own existence was the marriage of a Skyclan warrior and a Daylighter, so the rank held close to her heart to be returning.

As Hawkstar concluded her meeting, Starlingtrail bowed her head gratefully for their king's time and incredible news. She looked to her kittens with a soft smile, purring gently. "Now, wasn't that simply wonderful news, darlings. And you all listened so very well." She stooped down and rasped the closest kitten to her behind the ear, already such good and polite young cats.

QUAILSTEP
Quailstep watched in reverence as Hawkstar called the Clan meeting to order. Her heart skipped in trepidation - the previous Gathering had been so ... well, she hadn't been there, but the aftermath had shaken their Clan - and specifically Hawkstar as well. Their leader admitting fault to taking another's life still wrapped like a shroud around the cats of SkyClan.

While a bit disappointed at not being chosen for the Gathering envoy, she did find herself surprised at the mention of her name.

A mentor.

She'd wanted an apprentice for quite some time, a way to prove herself as a stalwart warrior of SkyClan and defender of the code, though she'd never brought it up to Hawkstar personally. She'd wanted this to happen naturally - a mark of her worthiness of the position. And while she'd be taking over the training of an apprentice, rather than starting fresh, her heart still swelled with pride. Hawkstar trusted her and Cometglow to rectify the mistakes of other Clanmates.

She padded over to Mallowpaw, dipping her head and touching noses with the young cat. "We'll begin training tomorrow," she mewed during a lull. "I'd like to see where your skills are."

But somehow, Hawkstar was even more full of surprises. Daylight warriors! Back in the Clan! While Quailstep harbored no ill will to the rank in the Clan's heirarchy, she couldn't help but worry about the reactions of their surrounding Clans. Would they take this as a sign that SkyClan was preparing to build up their ranks in case of fights? Would that spur the others, especially ThunderClan, to continue their onslaught? SkyClan would need to be wary. Nevertheless, they would persist. As they always had.

After the meeting, she padded over to Brightnose, bumping her muzzle against the other warrior's shoulder.

"Be cautious at the Gathering tonight," she mewed, concern for her clanmate clear in her voice.

BRIGHTNOSE ──

Quailstep's concern brings a smile to Brightnose's face, and she nods. "Don't worry - 'cautious' ought to be my warrior name!" She purrs with laughter at her own joke, though it's more so an attempt to mask her nerves; she's not lying, however, as she certainly doesn't plan on stepping away from her Clanmates to mingle. "I would've liked for you to be there too, but maybe next time. At least Mulberryburst is going - I'll probably stick close to him."

"More importantly,"
she continues, giving Quailstep a friendly nudge, "an apprentice! Congratulations! You'll be a great mentor to Mallowpaw, I know it." Brightnose's voice is full of pride for her Clanmate… perhaps not just her Clanmate, but also her friend. For once, Brightnose can feel the warmth of companionship stirring within her chest - not unwelcome, but admittedly a little unfamiliar. Perhaps she really should start opening up more…
now i will tell you what i've done for you

QUAILSTEP
Quailstep chuckles at the comment, a purr rumbling deep in her throat.

"Hmm, Cautiousnose just doesn't have the right ring to it," she muses aloud. While she hadn't spent much time with Brightnose prior to their journey (after all, Qauilstep was already a warrior by the time the younger she-cat was born), she was pleasantly surprised by the growing affection she felt for the young warrior. The pair were often finding themselves side by side on various patrols or when meetings like today happened, and she admired the younger cat's thoughtful heart. She was a good warrior - a worthy choice for Hawkstar to take along to the Gathering.

Her ears shifted in embarassment at the comment about her mentoring skills. Quailstep wasn't entirely used to compliments, but still, she wasn't going to put herself down. If Brightnose believed so, maybe it was true. She leans into the nudge and smiles.

"I hope so!" she mews, looking over at the apprentice for a brief moment. "And who knows, soon enough you might get one yourself!"
