LEADER OF SKYCLAN

.

// set the night before the gathering

The burgeoning moon did little to soothe her nerves. Hell, Hawkstar was quite sure that no full moon would ever be more than a reason to stress for a very long time, at least as long as there were non-believers and heathens across the roots of Fourtrees, no doubt staring into their territory at this very moment plotting the massacre of her clan and traditions.

If Hawkstar was prone to neurotics before, the last Gathering had only worsened the paranoia she often steeped herself in.

But they had agreed. SkyClan had foolishly agreed to their false new code and their version of StarClan. Fine. So be it then.

"SkyClan."

They file in from their dens and duties, settling in uncomfortably next to one another with their flickers of wonder, disdain, anger - or whatever inane emotion they could throw at her safely under the light of the almost-full moon. It didn't matter though. As long as she was leader, it was her word they hung on, whether they approved of it or not. "Tomorrow's Gathering, I will be bringing my deputy, my medicine cat, Kitesigh, Mulberryburst, Dovecloud, Brightnose, Victoryscorn, Daisydream, and Lupine. Any of you may bring your apprentices if you think them capable.

My lead warriors will be staying behind to be my stand-ins. If anything were to go wrong, follow their word as if it were my own."

There was little to be said about the state of the other clans, or at least, little to be said that the clan did not already know.

"While we are here," Hawkstar continues on, sweeping the thought of ThunderClan out of her mind with a flick of her tapered tail. "Jesterpaw and Mallowpaw, I want Cometglow and Quailstep to take over your respective trainings. I hope that their steady paws will give you a more well-rounded understanding of your studies."

Reassignments done and over, with two apprentices plucked from their previous mentors without a word to their failings or where they could improve. Just… poof. New mentors - think about what you've done. Hawkstar had little patience for anything more, at least during this phase of the moon.

"You all might see more kittypets and soft-paws hanging at the edge of our territory. These new faces are our new … friends … and allies. Fizzystar of WarriorClan has promised us a boost to our ranks, and new bodies to train. In return, I have promised them protection from the junkyard cats that attacked myself and Tawnybeam some weeks ago. If even a proven SkyClan warrior could be injured, I shudder to think what they could do to an untrained pet.

With our new friends comes an old tradition to be reintroduced … I am opening SkyClan's borders again to daylight warriors and part-time soldiers. As they come and go, we will assign patrols to take our prospective ranks back to the Twolegplace as we did in the gorge. I hope … I hope that our new friends will provide a breath of new life into SkyClan, and that we might be able to show more cats how a noble warrior acts under the diction of the code."

Chrysalisgaze was to remain in camp - she hoped it was because Hawkstar considered her capable of protecting her clanmates, shall anything happen while Hawkstar and the others were away. She listened as her leader assigned Jesterpaw and Mallowpaw new mentors, with no further comment about the situation, but she trusted Hawkstar had good reason for doing it this way. Chrysalisgaze couldn't even begin to imagine the responsibility and stress Hawkstar must have been constantly under - she herself oftentime felt overwhelmed having to care of her kittens and she wasn't even the one who primarily cared for them during the day. How much strain did Hawkstar have to be under, to care for not only her clanmates, but also worry about the other clans and colonies out there?
When Hawkstar mentioned the reintroduction of daylight warriors, she felt glad. There could never be too many helpful paws around. Looking at her leader, she wasn't sure if Hawkstar felt the same, but Chrysalisgaze didn't worry too much. She glanced at her kittens sitting next to their mother and knew she would do anything to protect them. If there were others willing to help, why would she turn them away? And the opposite was true as well - if anyone else needed protection, she would be there for them. What kind of warrior would she be if she wouldn't do that?
Hawkstar had finished talking and Chrysalisgaze wondered if the gathering would turn out okay. She couldn't help feel anxious over it, after what had happened last time. Scanning her clanmates, she saw the same worry reflected in their eyes and tail twitches. Tomorrow was going to be a long night...

M... me??
Brightnose stiffens when her name leaves Hawkstar's mouth. The Gathering? The last one had been an absolute disaster - Brightnose hadn't really imagined having to go since then, as any attempt to had made her stomach churn with anxiety. This feeling springs back to life now as she tries to sit straighter, taller, looking ahead at her leader in a determined act of masking her own worry. If... if Hawkstar has chosen me... all I can do is my best. This thought does nothing to calm her, but being picked for something important does make her puff her chest out with pride, just a little.

Continuing to listen (and hopefully distract herself from her anxious thoughts), she watches as Jesterpaw and Mallowpaw are given new mentors swiftly, refusing to address their former mentors at all. Yikes. Brightnose isn't sure if this would feel worse than their leader announcing their failures to the whole Clan, but perhaps they could find solace in the fact that Hawkstar is clearly stressed, no doubt over the Gathering. In any case, Brightnose is happy for Quailstep - being assigned an apprentice is a sign of capability. She'll have to congratulate her once the meeting ends.

Finally, Hawkstar announces the return of daylight warriors, and to expect kittypets near the twoleg border. Brightnose expected this to happen eventually, and it's good timing, too; while she's never encountered the mentioned junkyard cats herself, she detests rouge gangs and she doesn't want them anywhere near here. Hopefully with SkyClan warriors defending the kittypets, they'll start staying in their own stars-damned territory. SkyClan has enough to worry about already with the rouges living across the ThunderClan border...
now i will tell you what i've done for you
