It was strange how only a moon ago he'd been dreading the news he would have to share, but for this moon he was excited. The clan would be gaining so many new warriors among their ranks, which without a doubt would boost their spirits. With Leafbare approaching them soon, it would be a relief to have more paws on board to gather resources. Especially with Akemi's kits on the way. However, he couldn't help but feel a twinge of sadness. These apprentices had arrived from the shipyard. Perhaps they would be the last to experience and remember the way RiverClan had once lived. Future apprentices would only know of this life and nothing else. It has a notion that saddened him. However, it was something that couldn't be changed. Something they must adapt to.

Adapt they will. A river is always changing after all. Their sadness, happiness, frustration, everything would change in time. I wonder what RiverClan those kits will shape?

He clambered upon the meeting trunk and looked down to witness families grooming the fur of their children, friends laughing, and those who decided to stretch their limbs. A gentle smile curls from his lips as he takes in the scenery. It's only when he locks eyes with another warrior does he realize that some have already started to gather, as it was typical of him to start a meeting soon. With a nod he begins, "Everyone please gather around for this moon's meeting." A couple of minutes pass by as he waits for a good amount of cats to form a crowd.

"A lot has happened since our last meeting. We've had new faces around, especially those in the campground. They have not shown themselves to be dangerous. I've even heard of our warriors having a pleasant time with them. Some of those cats have expressed interest in joining our ranks. I have been considering it for some time now. With Leafbare approaching more mouths to feed is the last thing we need to consider, but we will also be gaining more paws to help around camp. Not to mention we will be having many new warriors this moon."

The disapproval from Frostmoth is to be expected. However, he could only hope that the young tom was pleased that no formal decision had been made. That he didn't act without talking to the council first. Especially when they had multiple discussions in this month particularly about apprentices and whether or not they should be made warriors. Only one apprentice has been made a source of great debate, but it was not due to their lack of skill. All of them were in agreement that this apprentice was more than ready. Capable. However… They all agreed that this apprentice needed more time to grieve. To be looked after.

"That being said, we have many assignments to get through, so let's get started." Where… Where should I start? He looks at the crowd of apprentices who are practically radiating excitement. Should I make them warriors first or should I bring up a tragedy first? His gaze trails to Jackdawpaw and then to Melodykit. Both of them have gone through so much. I've always talked about the good news first, so let's try and switch it around for this moon.

He returns his gaze to the plethora of apprentices who look like they're practically five seconds away from sprinting out of camp. "Galepaw, Torrentpaw, Iciclepaw, Twinklepaw, Sharkpaw, Sardinepaw, and Crescentpaw. Please step forward to receive your warrior names." Oh, how his heart ached. He thought he would be ready for when the time came, yet he finds his eyes watering nonetheless. Even though only one of them was his apprentice, he still felt pride for each and every single one of them.

"Galepaw. You are the swiftest apprentice RiverClan has seen thus far. You are also quick-witted. I often find myself at a loss at your answers, as they hold a wisdom beyond your age. Use this knowledge to better not only yourself, but to aid others. However, remember that you are still young. There is still much to learn and… What you wish for is not truly out of reach. You simply need to run to it first." Out of respect for the younger tom he doesn't outright share with the clan what Gale desires most. It is not up to him to tell, but he felt it necessary to remind them he hadn't forgotten what was shared. That despite the responsibilities of the clan making their time together limited, he still saw them. "From this moment on you will be known as Galerunner." Was it an acceptable name? It was difficult to tell from the lack of reaction he had been given.

Is he mad? Stars, I can never really tell with him. Although… The leader smirks. "A river is always changing. No matter how much you try to stop it, the river will keep flowing. Sometimes it can even change the path it flows from. I'd say we aren't that much different from the river. I'll strive to continuously adapt like the river to whatever is thrown my way. That is how I'll allow myself to be." This is how animal I want to be. I found my answer, Galerunner. Now it's time for you to find yours. "A journey begins with the first step. Remember that."

Pikestar does not wait for the lanky warrior to scowl. While his words were wise, the others did not know how biting they could be to Galerunner. It was meant to be. Pikestar had thought long and hard about what to say, seeing as the pale warrior despite all his wisdom was still very much a kit demanding attention. For so long he had failed the warrior and because of this failure… The warrior in front of him still hadn't taken his first step. He was just a child who needed a nudge. For someone to see him as he was. All he could hope was that Galerunner didn't take his words as an insult. The wisdom passed down to him was meant to encourage them.

Nevertheless, Galerunner was not the only one to receive their warrior name for this meeting. He needed to move on.

"Torrentpaw. From the very beginning before apprentices were a thing, and when we were in the shipyard, you asked me what you should do to help this clan. I told you to seek training from Pineheart and you did so without question. You have always shown care for your clanmates and dedicated yourself to training in order to better help those you care about. There is bravery in that. You were aware you were a child, and yet you still wanted nothing more than to help. Even when things became difficult you were always there to rally your fellow apprentices or seek answers despite knowing risks you'll take."

"Your new name will be Torrentsky."
His ears flicked at the murmurs of some cats. It was to be expected. After all, their clan had a complicated relationship with SkyClan. Even if he personally had a good relationship with some members of SkyClan, he wouldn't be naming the new warrior after their neighbor. He was not in the business of looking for approval from another clan. "When all seems lost, especially in the darkness we look to the sky. The stars shining brightly there guide us back home. I name you Torrentsky because I believe you will guide those in need without a second thought." Whatever opinions the rest of the clan held towards the name was none of his concern. The only thing he needed to worry about was the look on Torrentsky's face, and from the smile sent his way… Looks like I did alright.

With a smile he tilts his head to his son. Tears threaten to spill from his eyes. No matter how much he longs to hold the white apprentice, he can't. At this moment Iciclepaw is nothing more than an apprentice waiting for his warrior name. When this is all over he can go hug his son as tightly as he wants. "Iciclepaw. It's still a mystery to me how you managed to sneak into our group or survive for so long on your lonesome. Perhaps none of us will ever truly know. However, that is not what's most important. What is, is that you have continued to persist despite your unease. It is much easier to give up, and yet you never did. It was difficult. I wondered for some time if you would remain in your shell, but as the moons passed I began to see a young tom leaving behind that shell. Bit by bit he led with kindness and slowly began to find his place in this clan."

It was bittersweet to recall the times when his son was much smaller, when he hid behind his legs. It was impossible to do so now. The boy was too big and even if he tried to hide behind Pikestar, everyone could still see him. "Iciclewish will be your warrior name. You have learned the skills to be a warrior, but you need to believe in yourself. Even if there is still much to learn, it is my wish that you can finally see how capable and brave you are. Hold your head high, don't fear the unknown. Take a moment. Breathe. Remember all that you've learned and then decide what's the best course of action. Don't forget you aren't alone either. All you have to do is ask."

Pikestar remains silent for a short moment, before tilting his head to another apprentice waiting for their warrior name.

"Twinklepaw. Not only have you proven yourself in learning the skills required to become a warrior, you have decided to become a weaver. While I am no weaver myself and have only dabbled in fashion, I am aware of how challenging it is." To this day I can't make a flowercrown without messing up the first one, or working super slow. I just don't know how you all do it! And so easy too! "Not only are you adept with your paws, you are honest. Even when it is easy to lie, it's as if the thought never crossed your mind. It is a mark of wisdom to admit when you may not know something. Due to this honesty you have learned more from your mentor, and lately you've been seen helping younger apprentices weave."

A gentle smile curls from his lips. "With all this in consideration, your new name will be Twinkletuft." It is a name he thought suited her due to how her pelt shone. She had a bright future and he wished it would continue to remain that way for quite some time. "Even though you are now a weaver, don't stop learning. Keep your earnest spirit and continue to soak up knowledge and be willing to share it with others."

Is this really half of them? I knew a lot of them were going to become warriors, but I'm starting to get thirsty from talking so much. I… I really want to take a break and get water. Frostmoth would kill me though. AHHH! TOUGH IT OUT! You got this Pike!

"Sharkpaw." The grown tom is replaced with his kittenlike self. A memory of the little kit biting his tail comes to mind, causing the leader to chuff. "I remember when you used to bite me many moons ago. I hoped you'd grow out of it, but it seems like you haven't." It's a little joke sent the future warrior's way, one he knows they wouldn't appreciate. Not wanting to face their wrath, he continues, "I may tease you for it, but I have admired your ambition. Many moons I have watched you tirelessly train with other apprentices and spar with many warriors. With each warrior you sparred with… Every loss you faced, I watched as you practiced what moves they had made to better yourself. Even though there were some disagreements between you and your peers, it's clear that you are loyal to this clan. Remember that your fierceness is not just a weapon. It can be used to protect those you hold dear. For these reasons, your warrior name will be Sharkfrenzy."

A daunting name without a doubt. He can imagine cats of other clans still from fear hearing the name Sharkfrenzy alone. It was not his intention, but he supposed this was one thing Sharkfrenzy would love about his new name. However, the origin of his name came from love. He'd seen how close the warrior was with the newly named Torrentsky. Should anything happen to that warrior… He has no doubts that Sharkfrenzy would do everything in his power to seek retribution. Green eyes linger into blue. "Be mindful of your emotions."

"Sardinepaw. Ever since you were little, you were always around spreading your enthusiasm. Whenever there was someone upset you always lended a paw and tried to make them smile. Always looking at the bright side of things, no matter how daunting they seem. Something that I, even as your leader, struggle with. However, I want you to remember that you are never alone. You may be the source of happiness for others, but this doesn't mean you have to be all the time. Lean on someone's shoulder from time to time."
He takes a pause with a smile, "Your warrior name will be Sardineskip. Continue spreading your joy, but remember to leave room for sadness." There is some truth within this wisdom. All he could hope is that Sardineskip would find an answer that satisfies him. One day you might face a terrible loss. A smile alone won't be able to fix it.

He moves on to the white apprentice. The very last apprentice to be made a warrior.

"Crescentpaw." It was difficult to even call their name. Not because they had done something so horrible, but because he was reminded of someone who was missing. A brown tom who would be beyond proud to see their child become a warrior. Do you know how much they've endured because of your actions? How many glares were sent their way? He shakes his head. This is not the time to be thinking of you. Pink eyes looked back at him patiently. "You have endured much silently, but your silence is not out of fear. The understanding within you is to be envied. No matter how much has been thrown your way due to circumstances out of your control, not once have you faltered. For all these reasons and more, your warrior name will be Crescentmoon."

Crescentmoon. A name not of song nor of gnashing fangs. Although not said, he only wished for her to carve a path of her own. "The moon is hidden from us in the day, but appears in the night. No matter how much the darkness tries to snuff its light, the moon remains. Much like you Crescentmoon. Continue shining, even when others struggle to take notice."

There was no need for him to offer them additional words of wisdom. He knows this. Perhaps many cats found it tiring to hear of it, but as he interacted with the children and faced the consequences of his mistakes… It became clear. Even more so with excluding Thunderpaw from becoming a warrior alongside her brother. The reality was that RiverClan had failed these children. While they had the survival skills required of a warrior, they still needed some guidance in other matters. Even if they decided never to reach out to an older warrior, at the very least they had his words and each other to look after. Growing up was not quite clear cut nor easy after all.

"That's all of our new warriors for this moon."

His gaze trails to Thunderpaw. Taking in the look of betrayal. If this had been the past, he would've avoided her entirely. However, he was tired of running. Making her wait was not done out of punishment. It was done in an effort to amend their poor care towards the children of RiverClan. Would it fix everything? No, but it was a start. We talked about this. She wasn't going to be happy about this decision, and we all knew it. All we can do is move forward.

"We will move onto some name changes."

He tears his gaze away from Thunderpaw and directs it to Akemi who rests near the medicine cat den. "Akemi is one of the newer faces within our clan. She has approached me and asked for a clan name. One that starts with Warm. Normally, a new joiner would go through training under a warrior for a moon, but Akemi is unable to. She's made it clear that she has no intentions of leaving the clan once the kits are born and have grown. Considering it will take some time before she can fully undergo training, I have decided to accept this request." There may be some who would be unhappy about this decision and he's more than aware of it. Even his own siblings were going through training. Brook might be peeved about this. "Akemi, your new name will be Warmglow. Despite being here for a short while, you have shown yourself to be amiable towards others. Going as far as asking permission to eat fish." It's a little jest, one he hopes is not too great of an offence.

The last name change is one he is wary of. He even asked Jinglemoon to bring the kit from the medicine cat den for this meeting. When asked why… He made it abundantly clear what it is he intended to do. The hesitance he was met was enough. After explaining, Jinglemoon agreed to it. He is prepared for the clan to question him. Especially after everything Melodykit had endured. It would seem cruel of him to do this to her. He looks at the injured kit by Jinglemoon's side. Said medicine cat looks at him with a questioning glance, as if to say is he truly certain this is worth it?

"Our last name change is going to be a questionable one. However, I don't intend this name to be a cruel one." The crowd is puzzled. Rightfully so. "As you all know one of our kits, Melodykit, was attacked by a dog. Jinglemoon worked tirelessly to ensure her recovery. Her recovery will be a long journey." I'm not talking about her wounds. I doubt she would get over nearly being killed by a dog so easily.

Pikestar turns towards Melodykit. "It was scary, wasn't it? It's okay to be afraid. I… I will change your name to Howlingkit. To show how strong and brave you are." How should he explain this? In a way that she would understand? In a way that didn't mean punishment? "Did you know dogs howl? One day, when you're bigger and stronger, you're going to howl back at any dog that comes your way. That's what I hope. This is what your new name means. Bravery and strength in the face of super scary dogs." Of course. It was to be expected he would go about it this way. However, he was talking to a kit. There was only so much he could say or do to make her understand the extent of his hopes for her.

Awkwardly, he presses on to the next matter of business. "We have lost an honorable warrior. A warrior who sacrificed their life for their apprentice. Mudpool would speak happily of Jackdawpaw's progress. I've seen many warriors who are proud of the strides their apprentice has made, but Mudpool practically beamed in pride whenever we spoke alone. I'm also sure they might have made some warriors roll their eyes when they spoke of what Jackdawpaw had done for the day. I'm sure they have no regrets in their decision." Please don't blame yourself. Mudpool would be sad to see you this way. They always loved it when you smiled, so try to smile when you can.

A bout of silence passes.

"Knowing that Mudpool would love to see their apprentice continue training, I have asked who would be ideal in taking on Jackdawpaw. Who would carry out Mudpool's wishes the best, and I found there is only one warrior who fits." The silver tom looks for a blue molly. "Lichentuft, you will continue Jackdawpaw's training."

Another bout of silence passes.

"That is all for this meeting." With that, he descends from the meeting stump. Where to? To drink some water from the river surrounding camp.

˚ʚ♡ɞ˚ Baby do you know what you wanna hear?

indentAkemi waits impatiently by the entrance to the nursery. Her sons are too young for her to leave their side quite yet, but this meeting is one she won't want to miss. 'At least, I dont think so. I don't want to assume anything!' It's possible she wouldn't be brought up at all, but after the conversation she had with Pikestar, her hopes are high.

indentA bright voice joins the crowd in cheering for new warriors. Akemi doesn't know these cats very well, but they've all done so much for her, already. Even so young as they are, they've been helping keep her fed and sheltered. She can't think of anyone more deserving of the title of 'warrior'.

indentWhen she hears her own name called, Akemi sits up a little straighter. She watches Pikestar as close as she can through the crowd of cats separating them.
"Warmglow." It's been a long time since anyone's called her 'Warm'. She'd set that name far behind her, in her kithood. It was only the birth of her own kits that brought the memory back. The wish her father had made for her, that she not be plagued by coldness her whole life.

indentNow, the what chilled her heart the most wasn't the Leafbare winds, but the icy gaze of her family on her back as she left their home. No weather could compare to being severed from the loving light of her family.

indent'That's why I can't mess this up. I can't lose my home again.' Warmglow grinds her teeth behind her bright smile. There's got to be an end to these cat's generosity, and she's not eager to find it. Pikestar was already bending the rules by letting her get a name without any training. Warmglow is incredibly grateful, but she worries what will happen if he needs to keep making allowances for her.

indent"Thank you, Pikestar! I won't let you down."

—————————————————— Rocked by an endless motion ✦

It had waited for this moment with bated breath. Galepaw was not often scared of things, and this was no differentbut he couldn't explain away the strange anxiety in his chest, a knot of worry that had grown and fermented over time. It was a strangling thing, competing for space in his chestor perhaps it was one in the same with what resided in his chest, and those weary croaks were from a bird that had long grown exhausted... but at least it was not a lonely day. It listened to Pikestar upon his trunk with searching, watching eyeshe couldn't help but note to himself with a quiet chuckle that this was one of the only times that the leader was taller than heand attempted to focus, not on his words, but on the warm body that sat next to him. He had been waiting for the meeting to commence with Torrent, and so they had naturally found a seat next to eachother, nothing but two peas in a pod as they sat together and faced the future.

It was not surprised by his name being called first. It only felt right, necessary even, that he was to be the spearheader of the next generation. It stood in response to his name being called, blue gaze boring into the leader's vibrant green eyes, and he listened attentively. The name he was given, Galerunner, was expecteddemanded for, even. It was something he had decided upon ever since he was a young thing, and it nodded in appreciation towards Pikestar at his choice... but he continued to speak, even after the name had been given, and Galerunner watched him with a sharply curious gaze.

There it was. An answer. A conversation he had all but long forgotten, and Gale found himself tilting his head in consideration to Pikestar's words. It did not respond, did not move but let a simple chuff of air out, a simple agreement to the other's terms. This was no place to discuss, to dissect the words carefully chosen, but he stored them away for later. They would stew upon them, and decide upon whether he felt it was a foolish answer or not. Even the smallest thing wished to be the riverit was the river and the river alone that carved such a mighty path, that pushed rocks over shallow ledges, and dragged mothers away from their daughters. And perhaps the leader had not considered this, the cruelty of the water, in his choice... or perhaps he had, and Gale had a decidedly incorrect view of the other. Either way, he closed his eyes and dipped his head in response to the other, and turned instead to the freshly-named Torrentsky next to him. They were raw, nothing but babes reborn, and the air felt strangely new around him as he considered his other half.

It knew who his first words would be to, it had known it the moment he met the other. With carefully parted lips and a lowered voice, the freshly-named tom whispered his first affirmations as a warrior of Riverclan, with Torrent right by his side. The world was new to him, and it was beautiful, and frightening, and all the things it ought to be.

"Here it is." It muttered calmly, serenely to his other. "The first step. The first moment of the rest of our lives." It was gentle, the way he spoke to the other, the way his blue eyes looked for only olive green ones. It was as though he had forgotten all that was around him, as though not even a storm could tear his attention away from him. A small smile, strangely genuine, parted his lips as he regarded Torrent. "I'm charmed to have met you, Torrentsky." He hummed, and with this he leant against the smaller tom for just a moment, letting his weight tell all it needed to. It was a reminder that he was there, a silent gesture of appreciation, and something perhaps a little more, something he could never quite voice without some bravado. It was not a conversation for today, and perhaps it was not a conversation for many, many moons... but for once in his life, Galerunner was okay with existing in the present.

He drew away from the other in silence as Pike continued down an ever-growing list of names, losing himself in the celebratory words of other's achievements. Sometimes he could forget himself, and forget the lives of the others that surrounded himbut here they all stood, plain as the day was long, with muscles grown weary from moons of work just as his had. He dipped his head in quiet acceptance, muttered words of congratulations to those that could hear, and watched with a curious gaze to the names he had never quite grasped.

He couldn't help but raise a curious brow at one of the final names, the renaming of the little kit Melody. Howling... it was a garish name to be sure, one fraught with pain and suffering... but perhaps the little thing would grow to grasp it, hold it like some unholy weapon. Perhaps it should become something of pride rather than something of fear and despair... but still, Gale could not help but glance at his leader either way. Hopefully the tom had considered what weight this name would carry, even in the face of... 'super scary dogs'.

∘˙○˚.• KUHLI 𓆟 𓆞 𓆝
————————————— ∘˙○˚.•

As the ringed cat sat in the camp's clearing, looking up at their brother, they finally understood. Pikestar being a leader had been an abstract concept to them, but now, standing above his clanmates, speaking with such confidence and thought, Kuhli finally saw Pikestar for what he was. Leader, not a commander, but one that united the cats, held them together like the banks held the river in place. Without it, the water would spill and soon dry out, absorbed by the ground or turned into the mist and clouds.

Kuhli had not dwelled on the clan cats' names before, not too much, but now, listening to the ceremony and the young cats' new names, Kuhli felt proud. They did not know these cats, not well at least, and yet... how must their brother have felt? Watching these young cats grow from kittens to warriors? It made them emotional and they could only have guessed that their brother felt the same, yet more intense.

Kuhli dipped their head towards the first new warrior, Galerunner, in respect, though it seemed the tom's gaze was solely for the one next to it - Torrentsky. Kuhli smiled to themself.

And then came Akemi's turn and her new name, their new clanmate Warmglow. Kuhli had not considered what their new name would be, but looking at the she-cat, they decided to think about it properly. Names seemed to have held great importance in the clan's culture and Kuhli had decided to follow the tradition, to find a name that would be both personal and meaningful. They would have to talk to their brother about this, once the leader (and Kuhli now knew what made Pikestar a leader) had the time for his sibling. It was a conversation Kuhli would prepare for and was looking forward to.

JINGLEMOON

RIVERCLAN
MEDICINE CAT
HE/THEY
30 MOONS
DINGO

Jinglemoon looked proud and his fur quite puffy in response to this from where he sat just outside the medicine den entrance, seeing all the apprentices graduate here today and earn their new names was something to be plenty proud of! When it was his niece's turn his proud smile only grew, his tail flicking excitedly as she was given her full name; Twinkletuft! He couldn't be more proud of her and would take a moment to get to his paws and gently bump his head to her shoulder in congratulations "Well done Twinkletuft, your parents would be so proud of you. I'm so proud of you" He would return to his spot by the medicine den eventually but he was certain the joyful pride he felt in this moment would be something that stuck with him forever.

All of the names and the reasoning for them were thoughtful and fitting and he'd dip his head to the newly named Galerunner too, as an apprentice Gale had spent much time in the medicine den and he wondered how that would change now that it was a full warrior. One cat was notably missing from the ceremonies though and Jinglemoon frowned. Thunderpaw had been furious with him when he had chosen Rainpaw as his own apprentice, splitting the trio of siblings from training on the same path together. Now? Rainpaw was missing and she wouldn't even get to graduate with the sibling who remained. He gave Pikestar a long, hard look. He hoped the leader knew what he was doing with this decision...

Then came some other name changes, Akemi was given her clan name; Warmglow which made him smile given what she had mentioned to him shortly after the birth of her litter. It was a fitting name and suited her well. What was neither of those things though was the name Pikestar gave next...

Jinglemoon had begrudgingly brought Melodykit out from the medicine den at the leaders' request but the reasoning for why when he had been told had almost made him laugh at how absurd it was. Surely Pikestar had been joking with what had been said? It wasn't a funny joke but the medicine cat had been hoping it was at least a joke because then it would've only been stupid to have been said, nothing more. But it wasn't a joke. Pikestar had been serious and was clearly going through with it as he continued on. When the two of them met each other's gaze Jinglemoon's blue eyes would burn questioningly, as if to ask the leader if he was really going to be so foolish as to go ahead with this. Clearly, the answer was yes as the silver tabby tom continued.

The medicine cats' tail flicked angrily, his whiskers twitching irritably as Pikestar approached Melodykit talking about how he doesn't intend for the name change to be cruel. As if it wasn't cruel to name her after the sound of the creatures who had near mauled her to death? Why didn't he go ahead and rename Gale and Thunder to Drowning and River while he was at it? Jinglemoon would hiss lowly when Pikestar asked the kit if they knew dogs howled, as if the horrible howling melody of the beast that had wounded her likely didn't haunt her memories and dreams, the leader spun the name change as being honourable and brave, in the hopes that one day the kit will be able to howl back at any dog that came their way. He hoped too that one day the kit would overcome what had happened to her here, but giving her a name that would be a constant, painful reminder was not the way to help her achieve that.

She was strong and brave for even having survived what she did, she did not need a name change to prove that.

Jinglemoon would glare at the leader's silver pelt as he continued on with the last of the news but by now his voice had become just mere noise, no words were being registered in the blue tom's mind. He'd look down to the injured kit before him with a hardened expression of concern, his features softening once he was no longer looking at Pikestar. "You don't have to accept the name change if you don't want to, okay?" He didn't care if it was the leaders choice to name cats, if she wanted to be called Melodykit still, then she would still be Melodykit.

The ocean is in my soul,
And it's pulling me back to shore.
I'm letting go of the weight that's dragging me down.

.

Wavesong padded forward at the sound of Pikestar's voice ringing over the clearing, settling herself neatly beside the gathering cats. As always, little Troutkit wasted no time burrowing beneath the soft plume of her tail, while Strawberrykit plopped herself between Wavesong's paws, purple eyes round and star-bright as she stared up at their leader. The sight tugged painfully at Wavesong's heart. The time was coming, too quickly, when even her youngest guppies would step away from the nursery and into the world of apprentices.

And Jasperkit... Well, Jasperkit would be leaving even sooner. Adopted or not, the child was older than her own brood by nearly a moon. Wavesong breathed in softly, steadying herself as Pikestar's voice carried across the camp. More new paws. More curious minds. The campground cats seemed kind enough, odd, but kind... And RiverClan could always use more paws... If the clan didn't butt heads too terribly about former kittypets joining their ranks. She hoped they'd welcome them. She hoped they'd understand. Her thoughts were cut short as Pikestar moved on to the apprentices, and her heart lurched as he announced the first pair of names.

Under which Galepaw and Crescentpaw. Wavesong's breath caught, her eyes widening before a deep, rolling purr broke from her chest. Galepaw, her apprentice, who had pushed on despite every obstacle placed in his path... Despite her moons in the nursery... He had done wonderfully. Better than wonderfully. " Galerunner! Galerunner! " she yowled, chest swelling with pride. Strawberrykit let out a delighted squeak, practically vibrating between her paws. Then came Torrentpaw, now Torrentsky. Iciclepaw, now Iciclewish. Twinklepaw, became Twinkletuft. Sharkpaw, went to Sharkfrenzy. Sardinepaw, became Sardineskip. She yowled each and every name with pride.

And then... Her kit. Her eldest. Her soft-voiced beauty with the gentle soul. Crescentpaw stepped forward, and Wavesong felt her throat tighten. She watched as Pikestar bestowed the name Crescentmoon, and tears spilled freely, unashamed. " Crescentmoon! " she cried, voice ringing with joy. Strawberrykit bounced in place, chanting the name alongside her. She expected the meeting to end there. To gather her children close, congratulate them, comfort Thunderpaw for having to wait a bit longer, for not becoming a warrior alongside her brother Galerunner, and breathe proper pride into all of them.

But Pikestar continued. A name change? To who--? When he spoke Akemi's name, Wavesong's face lit with warmth. Sweet Akemi... Brave and tender with her young brood, now stepping properly into RiverClan. " Warmglow! " she called joyfully, catching the new queen's eye and offering her an encouraging wink. But then... Melodykit. Wavesong blinked, confusion pricking the edge of her expression as Pikestar explained. A name change... For the kit? Her stomach gave a small, uncomfortable twist. Why? What was wrong with Melodykit? Why change such a soft little name into something so sharp? Why give a child... One who had suffered... A reminder of the very beasts that had harmed her?

Her ears tipped back, the first hint of unease touching her face. She dipped her head respectfully, hiding the concern that tugged behind her eyes. If kits could have their names changed so easily.... If pain or misfortune could reshape the identity they were first given... Her gaze slipped to the tiny bodies nestled at her paws. Would her own children face such things someday? Would their names be changed, rewritten because of wounds or whims? She pressed her tail more firmly around Troutkit and lowered her head to nuzzle Strawberrykit, heart tight, thoughts lingering long after Pikestar's final words faded into the cool air.

Brook stood among the other cats of RiverClan - intrigued to watch his brother address the Clan as a whole. This was new, an opportunity to see how the others would respond to him taking charge.

And Brook was almost startled to find that, despite a few grumblings about his name choices, the cats of RiverClan listened to him. No interruptions, no outward jeers. Were they all fooled by him? Fooled by this act?

And Pikestar himself, rambling, seemed to believe in his own ruse.

Despite his thoughts about his brother as leader, Brook couldn't help but cheer for those named in the meeting - the many warriors, the change in names... Though a bit of jealousy crept into her heart at the gift of a new name to Warmglow.

Have we not yet proven ourselves? she wondered. And what sort of name might my brother give me, should he deign to do so?

Melodykit does not remember the attack well. At most, she recalls it through pain. The shredding of her vocal chords must mean that she screamed, the soreness of her body must mean that she hit something, and hit it hard. And her jaw... the now offset nature of it, and the lingering pain that remains, even after nearly a moon of trying to remedy it... The dog did a number on her, but she cannot recall its color or stature. She cannot even recall its facial features. In her mind's eye, the beast is simply a row of teeth in the unsettling darkness. But even that, in some way, seems silly.

Pikestar had promised that whatever he was going to do, it would be for her benefit. The girl remains sewn tight into Jinglemoon's side throughout the meeting, green eyes flitting from newly-made warrior to newly-made warrior, finding that all these name changes will be difficult for her aching mind (that troubled her, too, but admittedly not as much as her jaw.) A new caretaker in the nursery if gifted a name worthy of the Clans, and soon Pikestar makes his way to her. Oh, she thinks, as she looks up at the silver-furred leader with equal parts confusion, fear, and curiosity. This is for her.

"It was scary,"
he says. I can't remember. But she assumes that he is correct. After all, how could it have not been? He's quick with his work and explanation, and Melodykit is swiftly torn from her name and gifted a new one. Howlingkit. A prize, in effect, for surviving the slobbering jaws of a beast. Stolen valor, even. He provides it to her under the guise that one day, the name will make her strong enough to face her newest worst enemy. In the moment, she doesn't know what's more terrifying: being hailed as a proud survivor, or being expected to win against the very thing that harmed her.

Jinglemoon insists that if she doesn't want this, she doesn't have to accept. She looks towards the medicine cat, who has done all he can to help her - and continues, still, to aid her in the confusing moments. She swallows, and the girl replies, "N-no, I... w-wann..t... thi-s," her words scratch. Whatever happens after this meeting is unavoidable. She will be seen as something. A coward, a hero, a victim, a future heavy hitter... She isn't sure which one she wants, but she thinks accepting a new name to honor her strife and survival is the correct next step. After all, she has to trust the adults here.

"Th..an-k you," Howlingkit says before Pikestar moves on. She presses quietly closer to Jinglemoon, hoping the blue-furred tom isn't upset with her decision.

Torrentpaw did not waste a moment reaching the center of camp as Pikestar's meow rang across the island, his pelt prickling with excitement. He dipped his head in greeting to the other apprentices that gathered around him, before finally settling down onto his haunches next to Galepaw, who had grown quite tall over the past few moons. As his gaze travelled back towards Pikestar's, his heart beat with eagerness, and the slightest bit of apprehension he couldn't shake. He hoped that, in the time spent of his ceremony being delayed, he had regained any trust lost from his clanmates–not that he would ever stop trying to make up for his mistake. Drawing a breath, Torrentpaw listened attentively, his pelt bristling against Galepaw's.

As his friend's name was called, Torrentpaw's eyes lit up, a smile crossing his muzzle as he met Galepaw's gaze for a heartbeat before the lithe tom stepped forward to face their leader. Love swelled in his chest as his friend stood, tall and proud, to receive his new name. Torrentpaw couldn't help but let out a quiet meow of approval, as Galerunner was more than fitting for the warrior.

"Torrentpaw."

His golden gaze flashed towards Pikestar as his name was called, and as if he were still a kit, the excitement he had often experienced fizzing throughout his entire body returned. Rising to his paws, he took in another breath, his chest proud and his head held high, before he dipped it respectfully towards the leader.

Torrentpaw's gaze never tore from Pikestar's as he spoke, his heart thumping with pride at every word.

"Your new name will be Torrentsky."

The young warrior's tail lifted in pleasant surprise, but before he could speak any words of appreciation, Pikestar continued.

"When all seems lost, especially in the darkness we look to the sky. The stars shining brightly there guide us back home. I name you Torrentsky because I believe you will guide those in need without a second thought."

The leader's words resonated with him deeply, causing his gaze to harden with resolve. Torrentsky did not take these words lightly, but rather as a way of being, the purpose of all he had done to get to where he was, standing among all of the cats he loved most. Torrentsky held these words with utmost importance in his heart, and would never let them go.

"Thank you, Pikestar." Torrentsky meowed, his voice loud and clear. "Your words have not been taken lightly–I promise to uphold these expectations." He finished, before turning back towards Galerunner, who had instantly met his gaze.

Torrentsky let out a brief purr as his friend spoke, pushing his head against the others shoulder in gratitude before resuming his spot next to the warrior. Tall as Galerunner was, Torrentsky hardly struggled against the weight of the tom as he rested against his own body.

"I'm charmed to have met you, Torrentsky."

Torrentsky's ear twitched in surprise at his words, though his gaze quickly filled with fondness for his friend. Galerunner had been by his side since the beginning–Torrentsky would be lying if he said he didn't feel the same way.

"And I'm charmed to have met you, too." He replied, blinking slowly as he dipped his head briefly towards the taller warrior.

As the meeting went on, Torrentsky cheered for his newly named clanmates with great pride, along with the names of the cats who had recently joined Riverclan. When Pikestar had reached Sharkpaw, who was now Sharkfrenzy, Torrentsky's gaze travelled to the grey and white tom--hoping he would meet his gaze in return--his eyes shining with admiration for the warrior. He had a feeling that Sharkfrenzy would appreciate the name he was given, as it fit his intense personality quite well.

As Pikestar began to announce the last name change, Torrentsky's ears perked curiously. He knew all of his clanmates who had earned a new name had received it, so who could Pikestar be referring to?

At the mention of Melodykit, and the terrible accident that had severely wounded the young cat, apprehension crept back into his chest. He tore his gaze away from Pikestar as he went on, the name "Howlingkit" striking his heart as fierce as a claw. His eyes fell onto the kit in question, searching her gaze for any sense of how she was feeling. He watched as Jinglemoon lowered his head, insisting that she didn't have to accept anything she didn't want to, and though Torrentsky couldn't hear her response, he did hear her murmur her thanks to Pikestar.

Torrentsky's muzzle twisted slightly in distaste, his neck fur bristling momentarily at Pikestar's decision. Turning his head back towards the stump, he watched the leader continue with a questionable gaze.

As the meeting concluded with the saddening reminder of Mudpool's passing, and Jackdawpaw's new mentor, Torrentsky remained silent for a moment out of respect for the warrior, before Pikestar dismissed the lot of Riverclan, descending from the roots of his den.

As his clanmates stood and began to disperse, Torrentsky rose to his paws, before making his way towards Melodkit and Jinglemoon, his eyes clear with concern. Was it what Melodykit wanted? The young warrior found it hard to believe any cat would.

Catching Jinglemoon's eye with a shared look of distress, Torrentsky parted his jaws.

"Jinglemoon is right," He began, lowering his head towards Melodykit. "It's your name, and no cat can take that from you." Torrentsky meowed, before touching his nose to her forehead. "Riverclan will support your decision, just say the word." He promised, pulling away to glance down at the kit. And at this very moment, he didn't care if it was his leader's word.

FALLING FOR THE PROMISE OF THE
EMPTINESS MACHINE

.

Russetfall sits with her tail tucked neatly around her paws, only half listening to the announcements. She was far more preoccupied with the whereabouts of her siblings during this meeting. While she had said it was Pikestar's choice whether they joined or not, she had not expected him to actually allow them in. Even if they had capable warriors to monitor them. The three could not reasonably keep an eye on Dark and Umber the entire time, and so those green eyes stayed trained on her siblings sitting across the way.

Her voice rises half-heartedly to join the chorus of names being called in celebration, distracted. It's only when there's a noticeable ripple of unease in the crowd that the molly finally tears her gaze away to focus on the silver leader's words. Melodykit is having her name changed to Howlingkit..?

She frowns, trying to piece together the meaning. The intent. Pikestar was not a cruel or thoughtless cat by any measure. There had certainly been no malice behind the name RussetFALL when it was given to her. If anything, she believed it was another case like that- ....how strange to think that that had been nearly a year ago now. Jinglemoon says something she can barely catch to the kit pressed into his side, and she has to strain her ears further to parse what she responds with.

Her paws seem to move of their own accord until she's stopped in front of Jinglemoon. Russetfall gives a curt nod to Torrentsky and her friend before her gaze falls on Mel- Howlingkit. An uncertain smile crosses her face for the smallest of moments before her signature frown returns. "Pikestar means well, I'm sure. But you can always change it later, if you want." Stars knew Jinglemoon had brought it up to her enough times when she was nestbound to be able to repeat his spiel in her sleep word for word. "Names are important, yes, but its what YOU choose to let it mean to you. Not anyone else."

After all, she was Russetfall. The cat who'd almost been crushed under splintered wood and howling winds. The warrior who had nearly sacrificed herself to save others when the shelter began to collapse with them all inside.

Her tail flicks once before she turns to slip away and out of camp.

There's a sense of relief that falls over Sardinepaw that hadn't been there as he'd approached the prior moon's meeting. Free from the worries of when he'd finally earn his name, today brings an excited twitch to the older apprentice's whiskers and returns a bounce to his step as he heeds the RiverClan leader's call. The grey and white tom has finally passed his assessment, which meant... today's the day!

Ready for the moment he's been waiting so long for, Sardinepaw settles at the front of the crowd within the group of apprentices joining him in this important milestone — he tries to avoid counting the moons he has over some of them, tries not to compare himself to those who might... deserve this more.

He's been working hard, too, he tries to tell himself. He's nearly walked among the stars and has made his return home through sickness and countless days of regaining his strength. He deserves this, even if he feels like he sticks out among everyone else Pikestar calls forth, even if the twitch in his whiskers stalls, and the voice in the back of his head tries to tell him otherwise.

Sardinepaw steps forward with the group, his heart pounding against his chest as stark white paws shift beneath him. Even now, the apprentice finds himself having to wait, but it can't be much longer now. Only a few more breaths until Pikestar calls to him, grants him warriorhood. The leader can't change his mind now, can he? Suddenly, he braces himself for Pikestar to realize there's been some mistake, that the tom needs to wait another moon or two still, forever an apprentice instead of a warrior.

What a silly thought, he tries to tell himself, muzzle pulled with a semblance of a proud smile as his clanmates earn their names. Galepaw to Galerunner, Torrentpaw to Torrentsky, Iciclepaw to Iciclewish, Sharkpaw to Sharkfrenzy, and ...

" Sardinepaw, "

Pale blues blink up at Pikestar, smog-splotched face focused on the leader as he continues. His enthusiasm is spoken highly of, and his gaze brightens, even through the older tom's advice. " ... Remember that you are never alone. You may be the source of happiness for others, but this doesn't mean you have to be all the time. Lean on someone's shoulder from time to time. " A swift nod follows in response, a final breath taken before his apprenticeship is no more. Perhaps it's been more apparent within these last few moons than not, the tom's stark solitude, despite his means to make others' days brighter.

" Your warrior name will be Sardineskip. "

Sardineskip stands a little taller as Pikestar regards him with a few final words. " Thank you, " The newly named warrior takes another breath, feels the weight of his prolonged apprenticeship widdle away in a bright smile, if even for a moment. " I... I will. Thank you. "

A lot had happened in Riverclan, though it was not as tense as prior moons. This was good, or at least not bad, and sometimes that itself was good. That campsite saw some more use, Twinklepaw didn't think she would really ever see a tent again- her old housefolk never really did camping too often outside of some events where comets and meteors or whatever were dashing through the night sky. One time there was a 'super moon' or whatever, but it just looked way bigger so Twinklepaw didn't see what the big deal was, it was pretty though.

Pikestar called for Twinklepaw and several of her peers, she noted them all, tried her best to read their expressions and body language. Were they nervous? Were they excited? Hungry? Some combination of the three? Who knows, but she took note of as much as she could. Galepaw being around Torrentpaw in particular.

The assessments that Pikestar gave the pair were interesting, and even more-so were their reactions. Galerunner didn't say much in response to Pikestar, likely thought a lot more instead, it was who he chose to first speak to and interact with that got a more curious glance from Twinklepaw. Torrentsky, who openly thanked Pikestar with the same expansive wealth that the sky he was named after had. Fitting, to say the least.

Now, after that, both Galerunner and Torrentsky had an interaction that caused Twinklepaw's expression to curl into a mischievous little smile. Charmed to meet each other, eh? How curious...

A thought to pursue some other time, as soon enough Pikestar called her forward. Twinklepaw decided to take a deep calming breath, to take in all that she was once, all she had been since and so far, to take all of herself within one last time until she was given her own name. Twinkletuft exhaled calmly, breathing into the world her newest self, a continuation of what came before. In recalling Pikestar's assessment of herself, she wondered what names her brothers may have received in Windclan- she would be eager to one day meet them again.

"Thank you, Pikestar, your faith will not be misplaced." She dipped her head respectfully, then scanned the crowd for Peachtrot, her former mentor and flashed a bright smile towards her as thanks for her time. Twinkletuft's uncle Jinglemoon made his way over and expressed his own congratulations. "It's fitting, I think." Symbolic, for many reasons, and she was clever enough to guess what they were which was why it felt so right. If anyone thought otherwise, if anyone thought it was surface level and only referring to her pelt? Well, they can be wrong if they want to be, it wasn't their name anyway, it was hers.

Speaking of names being nobody else's but whoever held them, Pikestar brought forward Melodykit, and gave her a new name. Twinkletuft wasn't entirely sure if this was the correct course of action. She knew only what she had heard from around camp about what had happened as well as Jinglemoon's recount to her. To rename her Howlingkit.. Mm, it was perplexing at the absolute least.

There was obvious concern in the air, the faces some clanmates made was telling enough even as some moved to speak up about this. Torrentsky, kindhearted and well meaning as always wanted to be absolutely sure that this change was something the kitten wanted. Jinglemoon, much the same kind of cat, reassured the kitten that if she didn't want this, she had support in her corner. Russetfall offered alternative wisdom and it was something Twinkletuft also agreed with. One's name is one's name, not anyone else's.

"Yanno, I've always appreciated your kindness and honesty. We need more cats like you around." Twinkletuft said to both Torrentsky and Jinglemoon. "But, let's hear it from her, since it's about her name she has the final say on what her name is and what it means no matter what Pikestar or anyone says for that matter- even us."

Twinkletuft looked at Howlingkit with a soft expression. "So, remember, a name has power, but only the power you allow it to have. You give your name meaning. I'd be honored to learn what meaning you give it, whatever name it is that you choose."
