{$title} On the cusp of being apprenticed, Thunderkit finds herself bored and the warriors of Riverclan are subject to the energy and 1000 questions of a kitten more than excited to start training.
——————————————————— You who bares all your teeth in every smile. ✦

Restless was an understatement. Thunderkit knew she was growing too big for the nursery, and her siblings were too. Oh, how she longed to move from the cramped little nursery. Stand before the clan and hear her name spoken Thunderpaw. Someday soon, she would, and someday soon, she would know who her mentor was.

She had learned all this clan stuff pretty fast. Becoming a warrior was like the dream she held after hearing Wavesong's stories. Being strong and brave, facing dangers without flinching. That she wanted to learn as soon as she possibly could. Thunderkit didn't want to feel like she was floundering, not again. She wanted to prove she was strong.

And yet, day turned to night turned to day. Still, she was sitting about, restless. There was only so much mossball a kitten could play in one day, especially when her siblings were so much more... Laid back. Seemed like all the energy was condensed beneath her thick fur, with nothing to help unleash it.

That was, until, her eye was caught by a particularly large lump of fluff. Anyone with half a brain knew who it was; no one else in the whole territory could even dream about being as tall as a cat as Pineheart. She still had no idea how a cat could even get that big, he was like... A bear, maybe! A small bear but a damned big cat. So, of course, seeing him lounging about, he was the target of her boredom.

Her little paws stepped as gently as she could, crouched like she had learned chasing bugs in the camp, belly low to the ground. Thunderkit's tongue stuck out absentmindedly as she focused, trying to sneak, her tail still except the very end batting about like a dandelion caught in the wind.

With a light breath, and focusing as if she was about to pounce upon an unsuspecting lizard, Thunderkit sprang forward and landed upon Pineheart's back with a victorious giggle. Between the kitten's burst of giggles, she looked to the Life guard with a grin. "Hiya Pineheart!" She chirped, having not quite thought ahead past lunging at the warrior. Even then, her tail waved back and forth, thoroughly proud of herself for her daring "attack".

She gave it a moment, thoughts lolling in her mind as she looked at the camp from the slightly higher elevation. Thunderkit doubted she would ever be as big as the warrior, but she was excited to see the camp differently as she got older. With a little hum, she continued. "What's it like being a life guard?" She pondered. "Does Pikestar treatcha extra nice 'cause you're a life guard? I heard he got reaaaally mad at Scalepaw, does he just not like apprentices?" Her head tilted. It wouldn't scare her off from wanting to train, just means she has even more to prove!

Reactions: Torrentpaw

Moments earlier Pineheart had been enjoying a rare, quiet moment, lazing in the high-noon sun. Now, however, he was suddenly attacked by something about the size of a large water vole. He is seconds from bucking the thing off his back, sending them flying into the reeds, when it speaks his name. Ah. For the love of…

"Careful who jump on, kit," Pineheart says, looking over his shoulder at her. "Nearly sent you flying into the river– I thought a bug had landed on me."

Thunderkit begins to rattle off questions and Pineheart is just barely following, by now used to this sort of thing from being around Torrent for so long.

"Curious about the grown up's life, eh?" Pineheart asks, the sun having put him in a particularly good mood. He would indulge her… just this once. "Hold on, kit, I'll give you the tour."

He shuffles his paws and gets to his feet, keeping his back steady so the scrawny thing won't slip off, beginning to walk towards the apprentice's den.

"Pikestar does not treat me extra nice, to answer your first question," he begins, "being a lifeguard means I have more responsibilities, so if anything, I'm under more scrutiny that the rest," he… graciously, skims over the fact that Pikestar likely does not have a scrutinous bone in his body. "As for Scalepaw, well… how would you feel if someone came and touched your things? Pikestar's usually– well, he's got nothing against apprentices. Just doesn't like anyone touching his stuff. So as long as you don't go sniffing around the leader's den, I'm sure you'll be fine."

Frostmoth feels himself tense as if he had been the one to jump on Pineheart. Though the tomcat is by no means volatile, but he thinks that poking at Pineheart bears similar risk to poking at a porcupine. Still, Pineheart only issues a grouchy warning to Thunderkit before entertaining the lively kit's whilwind of questions. Frostmoth's mind drifts to Hazecloud and Lichentuft's brood; how transiently tiny they seem in comparison to Thunderkit and her siblings. It hadn't seemed that long ago that they'd been that small, too. For a moment, Frostmoth wonders if this means he is somehow getting old, but he's quickly humbled when his gaze snaps back to Pineheart. Right. He is still young.

Frostmoth comes closer out of curiosity. He almost cares more about the answers Pineheart will give rather than the questions Thunderkit is asking. It'll only be a feel sunrises now before Thunderkit will be apprenticed, and her enthusiasm is understandable. To an extent, he is envious of his younger clanmates and the thrill of growing up with so many novel changes. He and Storm had been barely old enough to be designated as warriors. And shortly after that, Frostmoth had been thrust into his position as deputy.

He joins them by the apprentices' den, a bemused expression on his face. "I take it you're excited to become an apprentice," Frostmoth chimes in "It's certainly an exciting prospect. Is there anything you think you'll want to learn first?"

Thunderkit was in fits of giggles as Pineheart stood up with her still on his back, clinging to him like a possum as her eyes glistened seeing the camp from up so high, her tail swaying as she listened intently to what the life guard had to say.

"Oooooh yeah!!" She nodded, enthused. "Cause you help with patrols and stuff." It made sense, he and the other life guards had a ton to do, really, they had to tell all the other warriors what to do. She grinned and waved a paw at a passerby as Pineheart hoisted her about camp. It had been a long time since she had been carried, and as much as she always tried to act older and braver, she couldn't deny there was a joy to feeling small again.

Again, though, she nodded at his observation about Pikestar. "Uh huh that's true, I get cranky when Gale touches my stuff and he's my brother, so someone else I'd get mad too." She promised not to go messing with Pikestar or anyone else's stuff; it was no fun getting yelled at.

Though another cat comes to join them. She recognises the deputy anywhere. "Hiya Frostmoth!!" She chirps, waving a paw at him too. He seemed kinda nervous sometimes, but she always thought he was super cool for being the deputy, so of course her grin widened as he asked her some questions too. "I'm so excited!" Her voice squeaked, ears burning a little at the sound, but the smile never left her face.

"First?? Uh..." She finally went quiet, thinking, before her eyes glittered with a determination. "I wanna learn to fight." Her grin was toothy as her tail swooped still, ruffling Pineheart's fur in the meanwhile. She nodded, as if conferring with herself that she was set on the idea. "I know we don't always get on all the time, but I wanna be able to fight so I can keep Gale and Rain safe! Mama always said I gotta keep an eye out for them." There was a quiet resolve within the kitten, like the final addition was something she had internalised a long time ago.

The kitten seemed to blink hard, for just a moment, before craning her head to try and look at Pineheart again. "Will I get to see the other clan borders too? I heard you talking about seeing other clans by the river, were they nice?" She hummed, it was weird to have overheard, she always thought they were the only cat,s but the more she listen,d the more she learned they were far from alone. Which only drove her excitement for her apprenticeship even further, she had already pestered basically everyone in the clan, but maybe she could make some friends in other clans too! Just the thought brought glee to the fluffy little thing.

⋆˚✿˖° I was dancing in the rain, I felt alive and I can't explain
Brook groomed herself with slow, deliberate strokes of her tongue, though her focus was far from the task. Her gaze lingered on Pineheart and Thunderkit, a soft fondness glimmering in her eyes. There was something endlessly endearing about kits, their boundless curiosity, the way their questions tumbled out, unfiltered and bright. She wondered, not for the first time, if she still had it in her to bear kits again. After Rain's death, the idea felt like a distant shore... Beautiful, but unreachable. And even if her heart dared to hope… who would want her as a mate now?

Her eyes lingered a moment longer on Pineheart, something unreadable flickering in her gaze. Her tail brushed softly against the ground before she gave her head a small shake and returned to washing herself, trying to smooth away more than just her fur. She listened quietly as Thunderkit spoke, warmth flickering in her chest even as a sharp ache twisted there at the sound of her son's name, Rain. It was still a beautiful name. She couldn't bring herself to resent it. Not when it came from such innocent lips. They picked a beautiful name for their child...

" When you're an apprentice. " she said at last, her voice soft as drifting reeds. " You'll learn all the borders. You'll be taught to hunt and fight... and of course, how to swim, and follow scent marks. " Her eyes lifted from her fur to rest on Thunderkit again, and for a brief moment, the heaviness in her gaze lightened.
