On the surface, one might assume that Deerkit was alone in SkyClan. And, in some ways, this was true. He had no parents nor siblings here, nor any other family to speak of. While there were plenty of other kittens around to play with, he didn't feel like he had properly befriended any of them; likewise, he felt no close connection to any of the caregivers in the nursery, either. Certainly, at times, he felt lonely - but he knew he was not alone, and one of the ways he alleviated that isolated feeling was by becoming attached to various older SkyClanners, ones he deemed safe. A natural candidate for this dubious honor? Swirlstrike, the mottled she-cat who had found him in the first place. She had been the one to find him, rescue him from the perilous state into which he had fallen, and bring him here, where things rustled softly in the pines and many cats came and went around him, like the tide. It had been a couple of months since then, and she had been an invaluable resource for Deerkit, helping teach him the basics of Clan living with its many rules and customs.

In short, Deerkit had come to trust her, and thus took any opportunity he could to spend time with the young warrior. Often he had questions he wanted answers to - as was the case today - but sometimes simply being near her was comforting. Today, though, his head was abuzz with thoughts, many of them prompted by the moonlight celebration. That gathering of cats, so alive and joyful and full of pride...it had lit some kind of fire in him. He needed to know how to grow up to be like them, how to become a noble SkyClan warrior: how to earn his place here and make his Clanmates proud. Deerkit figured a good place to start was by asking his favorite warrior, who must surely know all there was to know about being remarkable. "Swirlstrike?" The chocolate-striped tom-kit called out boldly, peering into the depths of the warriors' den. It was evening, not quite late enough for the stars to make themselves visible but no longer in the hustle and bustle of the day. "Are you in there? I had a couple of questions I wanted to ask..."
